Build 86 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed out Build 86 (r29190 r29264 r29276) to ALPHA testers which includes lots of bug fixes, and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

Advertisements (optional)

We have always worked hard to make Digsby the best IM client on the market while keeping Digsby free for all users. Part of that effort includes finding ways to accelerate our development process so we can continue making Digsby even better. Introducing advertisements as a revenue model can potentially help us expand our team so we can continue improving Digsby while also dedicating more resources to finally launching Digsby on other platforms like Mac, Linux, and mobile devices.

We’re testing the waters with advertising as a revenue model today by introducing a single display ad at the bottom of the IM window (example below). We feel strongly about keeping the buddy list ad-free. In debating how this implementation should work, we quickly decided that there needs to be a way to disable ads since some users really dislike them and are adamant about maintaining a minimalist user interface. The first idea was to do a “freemium” model under which there was a paid “Pro Version” of Digsby which comes without the ads. However, we have always strived to keep Digsby free for all users so we instead decided to try something unique. The ads in the IM window are completely optional for all users and they can be enabled/disabled via the top option in Preferences > Conversations. Essentially, every user gets the “Pro Version” for free if they find the ads too intrusive or annoying and wish to turn them off. Power to the users!

Since we are launching this to only ALPHA testers right now, we would greatly appreciate it if you leave the ads turned on at least until the release goes live to all users so we have as many people as possible testing out the implementation.

Twitter Fixes

There was a protocol change with Twitter which caused several adverse effects including repeating popups, tweets out of order, and missing tweets – all of which should now be fixed in this release.

We’d like to get this build stabilized as quickly as possible so we can get it released to all users so if you run into any bugs please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com. We’ll keep pushing to make Digsby even better and greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word!

Update 1 (12/8/2010 3:30pm EST): We just pushed out a patch to ALPHA testers fixing all the issues that have been reported so far. Let us know if you run into more bugs or low quality (ie: flashy/shaky/audio) ads so we can get this release wrapped up and pushed out to all users. The new release number is 29264 and changes include:

  • Fixed a few crash causing bug related to the new ads
  • Fixed a bug that caused IM windows to freeze in Windows Vista with Glass off
  • Fixed a bug that caused auto-update popups to ignore the preference to disable popups when running full screen apps
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to die if it can’t launch the auto-updater due to a windows permissions error
  • Fixed a bug that caused AIM accounts to fail to log in if you add them with @aim.com or @aol.com at the end
  • Fixed a bug with wrapping in the “Smooth Separate Lines” conversation theme
  • Fixed a couple small bugs with ad refresh timers and triggers
  • Fixed a bug that made IM window tab creation to go into a spin in rare cases

Build 85 – Private Alpha Release

We’re excited to release Build 85 (r28809 r28814 r28876 r28974 r28983 r29026 r29032 r29036) to ALPHA testers which includes lots of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Auto-Update System: We have a brand new auto-update system in Digsby. Updates are now downloaded *after* you log in rather than before. They are then applied next time you restart Digsby so downloading updates never gets in your way. You can also choose whether to automatically download new updates in “Preferences > General & Profile”. Lastly, clicking “Help > About” will check to see if your Digsby is up to date or if new updates are available for download.
  • Accounts Section: We redesigned the Accounts section in Preferences from the ground up to reflect Services you use with features that you can enable and disable for each service. This is much more intuitive than having three separate lists of IM, email, and social network accounts. For example, you don’t need to add your Gtalk and Gmail accounts or your Facebook Chat and Facebook Newsfeed accounts separately any more.
  • Email/Social Panels: The email and social network panels on the buddy list got a makeover. They now say the service name instead of the login username when you only have one of each service. If you have more than one of any service, they fall back to the login username as before. You can also rename them manually via the right click menu. Lastly, they can now be rearrange via drag and drop (although you can’t intermix email and social accounts as each one is a separate list).
  • Sorting/Grouping: We changed how grouping and sorting options work in “Preferences > Buddy List”. The new set of options is more intuitive by letting you choose the grouping mechanism first and then choosing how to sort those groups. It also allows for an extra level of sorting as a result.
  • RTL Support: We added RTL support to all of the IM window conversation themes. They determine how to align the messages based on the first character of each IM. The input box in newly created IM windows also automatically sets the RTL option based on your current keyboard setting.
  • ICQ Anti Spam: We added an option in the Privacy settings for ICQ accounts to automatically block friend requests with URLs in them. This option is ON by default and should help cut down on ICQ spam significantly.
  • Stability: We fixed several memory leaks related to account disconnects along with several of the most common crash causing bugs to improve Digsby stability and performance.

Update 1 (11/5/2010 12:40pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a bug in the auto-update system which caused some 32-bit operating systems to always think that there is a new update available. The new build is 28814.

Update 2 (11/9/2010 4:30pm EST): We just pushed out a patch fixing (almost) all the bugs you’ve reported thus far.  The build should be much more solid but please let us know if there are any remaining issues.  The new build number is 28876 and changes include:

  • No more Internet Explorer!  We’ve replaced all the IE windows we use for social network oAuth login screens with WebKit windows (same rendering engine we use for the IM window and news feeds)
  • Fixed a bug that caused scroll bars to disappear on older operating systems
  • Fixed a bug with scroll speed that caused scrolling to be slow with some mice
  • Fixed a bug that caused RTL detection to not work when chatting with someone who is logged in to Gmail chat
  • Fixed a bug with link alignment on saved statuses in Preferences
  • Fixed a bug that caused the preferences window to break if you open it before accounts finish loading
  • Fixed a bug that broke the file transfer window after Digsby checks for updates
  • Fixed a bug that caused two “update is ready” popups to show in some cases

  • Fixed a bug that caused scrollbars to not show when Windows is set to “Classic” mode
  • Fixed a bug that caused the file transfer history dialog to show that an auto-update was cancelled after a check for updates is done

  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to restart so it can apply an update even if you tell it not to exit because IM windows are open
  • Fixed a bug that caused the registration screen which comes up after a fresh install to not obey proxy settings
  • Fixed a bug that caused errors in cancelling in-progress MSN file transfers
  • Fixed a bug that caused the new auto-updater to try to apply a partially downloaded update in rare cases
  • Fixed a bug that caused links in the file transfer dialog to not disappear after a cancelled file transfer
  • Fixed a bug that made it possible for more than one instance of the auto-updater to launch
  • Fixed a bug that caused HTML looking nicknames in an IM window to get rendered
  • Fixed a bug that caused the installer to try installing Digsby even if it detects Digsby running in the background
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to show a permissions error on exit for a small portion of users
  • Made the single instance checker more reliable so you can’t launch multiple copies of Digsby
  • Added a “Faster!” link for manually triggered auto-updates since minimizing system resource usage isn’t as important in those cases

Update 4 (11/17/2010 5:15pm EST): Another small patch brings the build number to 28983:

  • Fixed a bug that caused Twitter to not show anything in the History view if there’s a capital letter in your Twitter username
  • Fixed a small bug with the bug reporter

Update 5 (11/19/2010 1:45pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing the last known bugs in this release.  We hope to push this out to all users early next week so please let us know if you run into any bugs. The new build number is 29024 and changes include:

  • Fixed a bug that caused the login screen to not come to the front after an auto-update
  • Fixed a bug that caused the input box to start very large if new conversations are set to start minimized

Update 6 (11/22/2010 11:45am EST): One final patch fixing a bug which caused the file transfer window to pop up when Digsby checks for updates brings the release number to 29032. We’ll be pushing this out to all users pending any new bug reports.

Update 7 (11/22/2010 1:00pm EST): Build number updated to 29036 and is being pushed out to all users.  Thanks for you all your help testing this release!

Build 81 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed out a new update to alpha testers (Build 81, r27865 r27890 r27900 27903) which includes lots of bug fixes and enhancements along with the highly coveted group chat support!  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Group Chat: The long awaited group chat support is finally here! You can create or join chat rooms on AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, and Jabber. Just click the room list button on the top right corner of the IM window and invite others to the chat. You can also create rooms via the menu: Digsby > New Group Chat.
  • LinkedIn: We’re introducing a completely redesigned LinkedIn implementation powered by their new API. You can now do all the good stuff you already do with your other social networks like comment on posts, like/dislike items, etc.
  • MySpace Like/Dislike: We added Like + Dislike support to MySpace newsfeed items.  Since their API doesn’t currently support this capability, the link acts as a shortcut for posting a “Like!” or “Dislike!” comment on the thread.

If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.

  • Facebook Login: We switched Facebook Newsfeed and Facebook Chat login over to OAuth 2.0, which is a much more streamlined method for requesting permissions that Facebook announced at their last F8 conference.
  • Twitter Achievements: We added achievements to Twitter (previously only on Facebook and MySpace). You will be asked if you would like to enable or disable this functionality and you can turn it on/off by editing your Twitter account in Preferences.
  • Gtalk disconnect: We fixed a major bug in Google Talk that caused it to constantly disconnect if you have an iTeleport user on your buddy list.

  • If the Facebook Chat servers can’t be reached, go to a “Failed to Connect” state instead of popping up the login page

Build 77 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 77, r26907 r26910 r26921 r27035 r27050) which includes lots of bug fixes and enhancements.  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log.  Notable changes include:

  • Multiformatting: You can now change formatting options like bold, italics, underline and font on a per-character basis instead of just a per-message basis
  • Smarter To/From: If you have multiple accounts of the same protocol, the “From” dropdown in the IM window will not pre-select or fall back to accounts that don’t have that person on their buddy list
  • Status Tagging: We’ve made it easier to spread the word about Digsby by letting you add a Digsby link to the end of your status messages.  You will be asked on login if you want to enable or disable this feature and you can change it in Preferences > Status
  • Bit.ly: We’re transitioning our http://digs.by URL shortener to use bit.ly’s white label service.  Any digs.by URLs made from now on are interchangeable with bit.ly links that have the same ending

Facebook Chat via XMPP (Jabber)

Facebook recently announced that you can now access Chat via the Jabber protocol, which is much more stable than our current implementation.  We switched Digsby over to use Jabber but haven’t pushed this out yet because it only works on the standard Jabber port which is 5222.  Many offices have firewalls that block all ports besides HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443).  Every other service we support including the current Facebook implementation has the ability to work on one of those two ports.

We hear they’re currently working on adding support for 443 or 80 but a little encouragement couldn’t hurt.  If you’ll be affected by this, please take a minute to send them a suggestion using this form and say something along the lines of:

I can’t access Facebook Chat via Jabber in Digsby unless you open port 443 or 80.  My office firewall blocks port 5222 and other ports.

Update 4 (3/24/2010 1:30pm EST): We pushed out a patch fixing the last of the alpha bugs that came in over the weekend.  As long as there are no new reports this will go live to all users later this week so please let us know if we broke anything.  The new release number is r27050 and changes include:

  • Potentially fixed a bug that caused font formatting to clear – please let us know if this keeps happening
  • Fixed a bug that caused “auto-response” to show twice in the IM window
  • Fixed a bug that caused ICQ block and invisible lists to get mixed up
  • Fixed a bug that caused the “Comments” link to disappear for some Facebook news items
  • Removed “Top Buddies” from jumplist as we optimize its performance
