Build 70 – Tweaking Twitter!

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 69, r24489) which implements many of the usability enhancements and you have recommended over the past week along with a bunch of bug fixes. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
Numerous Twitter Enhancements
Possibly fixed a crash when returning from hibernate
Possibly fixed a bug that caused AIM to disconnect a lot while sending IMs
We are close to pushing the release to all users so if you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.
If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then.  We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

Wow, what a week it’s been since our Twitter launch at DEMOfall 09. We just pushed a new release (Build 70, r24502 r24505) to all non-alpha users that incorporates much of your feedback. With your help, we’ve made several Twitter enhancements and fixed several bugs.  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable enhancements and fixes include:

  • You can right click on a button in the top bar of the Twitter window and mark all as read in that view
  • Directs and mentions now show up in the Infobox
  • A new setting for the Twitter timeline to be “always on top”
  • Clicking “Reply” or “Retweet” in a pop-up notification marks that tweet as read, along with clicking next or right clicking to dismiss
  • Digsby will now know your last sent tweet even if it was sent from another client
  • Fixed a bug that caused the “New Group” dialog in Twitter to not show everyone you follow
  • Fixed a bug that caused Facebook to get stuck on login when it should have gone to “Failed to Connect”
  • Possibly fixed a bug that caused AIM to disconnect a lot while sending IMs
  • A fix for some Hotmail accounts that were unable to connect

We realize that our Twitter implementation is a bit different than other clients. Our goal is to make it easy to follow and interact with your friends and contacts on Twitter without missing a loop. So now that you’ve had a chance to play with Twitter for a few days, we’d like to know your thoughts.

If you run into any trouble, use “Help > Send Bug Report” to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.

Let us know what you think in the comments and spread the word!

Update 1 (9/29/2009 3:56pm EST)You can now log into Twitter via your email address! The new build number is r24505.

is this fixed yet? downloading pidgin now, because i need a messenger program.. i wish to use digsby, but it's not even opening :(
  • matthew
how do i get a previous stable build? i uninstalled the version from http://install.digsby.com and installed it again, and it won't run. thanks :)
  • matthew
group chat would be nice for msn... i'm a non-twitter user too. if you want to expand users, add QQ support. more QQ users than twitter users, lol.
  • natural
    Guys,
All these features are cool. But we are lacking the MULTI-CHAT or CONFERENCE which is a basic one for IM. Are you guys even considering, coz, its been more than a year since many users have raised this concern.
  • I miss Digsby!!!!!
I've switched to MacOS and i'm using Adium...
It's a good app but... you guys are better with Digsby
Pease!! Hurry up with the MacOS Version of Digsby!!!
    Pleeeeaaaaseeeee
  • Diya
hey... right now i have digsby build 37 and i want to use this version. i dont want to use some new versions. but whenever i try to login, it directly goes to update. i dont want to update it.
Is it a must that i have to get the latest version??

    please help me digsby!!
  • Tony
    Re: http://blog.digsby.com/archives/995#comment-20087

This is not a Windows 7 specific issue. Ever since I updated to this build, my chatlogs are saved in "My Documents" instead of what I specify in "outputdir" in defaults.yaml. Definitely a new bug and hopefully fixed in next update.
  • The Twitter implementation is looking nice, now, if you get get the timeline to integrate with my other tabbed chats (similar to the Adium alphas), that would be awesome.
  • Brandon
    no problems with twatting here
  • Kiwaczek
    What about conection with Gadu-Gadu - www.gadu-gadu.pl ?
  • midnitemist
i use digsby ver build 24410. now, every time i log in via digsby, it downloads update. every. is there anyway so i need not update everytime or at least only the latest version. i dont know where the last update in the previous sesion gone. thanks
  • Nathan
This is getting REALLY frustrating. Twitter still doesn't connect, the bugs e-mail doesn't ever get a reply, and no reply to my notes here.

Is anyone else having problems connecting to Twitter?

When is the next update, and when is this going to be fixed?
  • Nicholas Chan
Is there a way to roll back to the previous version or at least an option to choose to use the old interface? This new twitter implementation is a step backwards, at least for me.
  • Jaxell
I love digsby, best IM-client ever in every way. My biggest problem is that I have switched to mac, and I've been waiting sooooooo long now for the Mac-version that is to be released "soon". But I never read anything about any Mac-version being in development. How soon is soon?
  • Mark
Changing the default log position in defaults or prefs.yaml no longer works, the logs just go to the default location in my documents. This seems to be a windows 7 issue as discussed in the forums. Any help would be appreciated
  • Digsby
@All: If Digsby is crashing, this is being caused by Threatfire. An update they released is killing the updater. We are working on finding a way to get around this issue now.
  • Anthony
@Digsby : I Installed a new version yesterday, today again per-updater is crashing.
  • Digsby is great. Love it. Would be better if Tumblr was a platform you supported. :D
  • tash
is there any chance the mac version will be available soon?
  • Digsby
@Anon + John: We are looking into it now. Nothing has changed with the auto-update system so we aren't sure of the cause yet. You can download and run the latest installer here so Digsby does not have to update:

    http://install.digsby.com
  • Anon
Still waiting on the developers to comment on the pre-updater crashing issue.
  • John
    The pre-updater keeps crashing!
  • Clarence
is there plans to integration the group view/views into the main buddy list rather the separate twitter window
  • Nathan
still not able to connect to Twitter, getting wickedly frustrated.
  • Twice in the last few days, I've had to exit Digsby when it began using over 136,000K memory. All I'm running is Twitter and Facebook, so this is pretty ridiculous. 36,000K used to be about the norm.
  • Jimmy
I'm not sure if this is an intended feature or not but my own Tweets are incrementing the unread count. Is that meant to happen?
  • Tux
Since no one reply to my question in the previous blog post here it goes again!

"When will a Linux client see the light of the day? It has been promised for a great deal of time!"
  • Could you make it possible to have the option to add yourself to a twitter group?
In the main timeline you see your own tweets. It would be nice to also see these in some groups...
  • Charlie, I am not sure what crack you were on, but Digsby was an All-in-One IM/Social Networking/Email application from day one. Please do not discourage this development of Digsby. The next thing we need is IRC.
  • Josh
First, props on an awesome application and I'm glad you guys continue to listen to your user base on various issues (installation and in-program).

Pardon me if this has been said before, I did a quick search and didn't see it in these comments.

What I'd like to see is the twitter functionality work like an IM window does for the other instant messaging services, but also work like the standalone twitter window that is currently being used. When using Digsby, I don't want to keep two windows open so I can instant message my friends and tweet out what's going on. I'd like to see the twitter functionality brought into a tab of the same IM window, thus creating a more cohesive program. As it is now, there's three separate Digsby windows that are likely to be open at the same time (Buddy list, twitter, IM). I don't like that.
  • phydeaux
Thank you! I thought that link only hid the breakdown in the infobox and not the unread count in the listing.

    Thanks for the reply.
  • Ian
"You can interact with Twitter using either the infobox or the more functional window that we added so the new Twitter features will never get in your way"

I still don't see why the functions that were in the infobox were removed. The quick switching between mentions and DMs from the infobox was great. Then you removed it and put it in the pop out window. I STILL don't want to use the popout window though...
  • Digsby
@phydeaux: The unread count is optional. You can just click the "Hide" link in the infobox and it will not show. You can interact with Twitter using either the infobox or the more functional window that we added so the new Twitter features will never get in your way if you are need very basic Twitter functionality.
  • Nathan
    Still ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ... connecting ...

Can't get to either my personal or work Twitter accounts via Digsby. Sent in bug report, was told it would be fixed -- three days ago. Sent in subsequent requests for help -- heard nothing.
  • Charlie
I loved how Digsby used to be about IM instead of social networking. The program is getting huge and I find that the constant updates are starting to annoy me.
Does this mean I'm getting old? Probably.

Anyways I'd actually like it to be more lightweight. If you want more features, activate them and get updates for them when you actually use them.

    Just my $0,02.
  • tash
gogogo I want the mac version!! :D
  • phydeaux
Please, please, oh PLEEEEEASE make the the unread count an option so we can turn it off altogether. As many have said in the past, it means nothing to a lot of us and I'm getting really tired of having to Mark All As Read.
  • Oliver
    Hi,
what's about a QuakeLive integration? You can see which friends are online, chat with them and join on servers.
    Would that possible to realize?
  • Scott
Twitter is really shaping up nicely. Really, really happy with how much feedback you guys have accepted and made changes for. My only minor two feedback items now are to request:

    1) Sortability for the twitter window - but honestly I don't use it that much, so it doesn't matter too much.
    2) Because I don't use the twitter window much, I'd like to be able to mark a tweet as read from the window that comes up when I left click the T in the tray once.

Minor things though, I'm really, really happy with your Twitter implementation now, thanks. :)
  • Afaebe
Nice tweaking tweeter, but I want its contents accessible right from the tray popup which is the whole point of digsby.
  • Adrian
This update was like 10mb big? what the... and after it downloaded the auto updater crashed and now everytime i try to run digsby it crashes instantly!!!!!
  • Jonathan
I love how digsby updates.....but i don't even use twitter! I think they should integrate Last.fm. That is what would be the coolest.
  • Anon
I have the same problem as Lam, a way to sidestep this is to update digsby manually.
  • WOW GUYS! You just keep making it better! And, awesome job with the quick bugfix i sent lastnight! i played around with the new implementations just now, to get used to them - and, i already love them! Now - if ya could make the timelines in the Digsby window to like - stay in place instead of making it so if the mouse "jumps" - ya have to go over it again. Maybe you could add a "Stay on top" with that, with what ya guys did to the twitter window! xD

Mind ya - that might get in the way of some people. oO
  • Adam
wish we could choose not to update...or download the update at our leisure, don't even use twitter. Connection isn't very fast so I have to go back to other chat programs while I wait...hate that I still need the other programs, why have digsby if I still need the others.
  • Lam
Digsby attempts to update to build 70 (I currently have build 67). While updating, "Digsby PreUpdater.exe" crashes. I have tried updating multiple times, only to have the pre-updater crash on me all times.

I can't send a formal bug report because of this...
  • Lisa
The more I mess with the new Twitter features, the more I like them! Its really great to see that the development team responds to users' suggestions and that updates reflect user input.

    Cheers!
  • Lam Bui
Digsby automatically attempts to update to this version, but the pre-updater keeps on crashing. I can't submit a formal bug report about it.
  • Brandon
Not only is the Facebook login issue NOT fixed, now its worse than before. I used to be able to login to Facebook Chat but the social network would never connect to show me my wall. Well now that I have logged out and updated to build 70, neither chat nor wall will come up. It just doesn't accept my password anymore.

I sure wish the devs would get off the Twitter kick and get Facebook working again!!
  • davidhaus
i can't use twitter now or my internet connection crashes
  • Just a thought triggered by Glenn:
"It seems a step to far to have to open the Twitter window. Could it not just replace the one I currently get on left click of the icon?"

Can't you indeed combine the new functionalities of teh popup into the left-click window.
And to make up for the cons of that window:
    - Add a delay of a sec or 2 before it disappears when mouse out
    - Make it remember what you may have typed in the text boxes (new status / inline reply)

That way you have best of both worlds!

Having 2 screens (the left-click and the double-click window) just seems wrong. Both having nearly the same data but working totally different from each other. Not really logical user interfacing. Both have pros, but the collide and irritate both the people who prefer the one and those who prefer the other.
  • Edgar Gomez
could be very good to had something like groups... I'm still use tweetdeck since that feature...
  • Regan
Looks nice, Would love to see some windows 7 integration with jump-lists for statuses, connecting and disconnecting
  • I agree with all the points Gabe and Bryan Said said... user interface isnt consistent for Twitter and its v annoying
  • Vladislav
it's awesome.. now i can tweet from digsby timeline... i like it... digsby is the best messenger ever! thank u! wish you good luck in developing such a wonderful project!!
  • Chris Niles
this build seems quite a bit more responsive, especially when opening a new IM windows for a contact with a large amount of IM history/logs.

    Great job.
  • Ian
The new twitter window is, to me, more of an inconvenience. The quick hovering over the Twitter toolbar with the ability to change the content based on the links at the top (similar to how it was done before the update) is my ideal functionality. That being said, I love the new @reply and RT functionality built into the info box. I would love a combination of the old functionality and the new. The seperate window is totally useless to me. I hate the flipped ordering and don't see what was wrong with the original infobox in the first place.
  • Steven
Indeed, please look at the wishlist, making the Twitter stuff better is good, but damn there are so many good stuff in the wishlist that could be coming before that twitter tweaking.
  • aa
Please please, look the digsbies.org wishlist, you'll find that both buddy pounce, and last-seen rank quite high. Its awesomely simple
  • aa
Nice, but would still root for buddy pounce and last seen, and if possible, psychic mode. The first two are obscenely simple. I can do that for free if you want :D :D
  • scutterman
Some good improvements, especially the "update now" button, but not enough to persuade me to use twitter on digsby
  • kaot
I just submitted a bug report about twitter not automatically updating when i forced it to update - and there was the tweet about this update.
That's great, fast work guys, kepp it going
  • Mark
Very nice :) Any way we can still get the Twitter window to count any tweets we see in there as read? (The window that pops out if you hover over the Twitter tab in the Digsby window)
  • I love the new Twitter implementation. I was a PeopleBrowsr fanatic before this, even though I used Digsby for everything other than Twitter.

That said, there's one thing still missing. It would be great to be able to toggle on/off seeing all tweets from people you follow, including their replies to other people. When that happens, it's common to link to the tweet that they replied to, so that following a conversation from one of your friends is easy to do.

The only other comment is about performance. On occasion, Digsby freezes as the disk is being pounded. It's not often, and it always comes back, but it's unsettling at the time that you're flow is interrupted.

The most incredible feature, which I asked PeopleBrowsr for months ago, is filtering _out_ groups from the timeline. It's so much more efficient to keep up with important tweets, while never losing any others when time permits. Excellent implementation of a crucial feature!

    GREAT JOB!
  • Bryan
Not a fan with the weird changes to the Twitter functions.

If I click the t at the bottom of the buddy list window, which is often how I check updates, new ones are on top - this is good. If I click the timeline, oldest ones are first, newest ones are on the bottom - inconsistent.

Scrolling - I click the t and I have a huge scrollbar, because it's like I really don't have many to read. But once I go to the bottom, the bar shrinks and jumps to the middle. Then I can do that again, and again. Kind of jarring.

Also, the easiest way to see mentions and directs are by the alert links (where you used to have the regular links to direct, mention, etc).. but once you check those out, they're gone. You have to open the timeline to get to them, unless there's some other way I can't see. Unnecessary to open a new window just for something that used to actually be there.

    As for good, I like the in-line response/dm. That's a nice update.
  • James Gipson
Love the new twitter integration. I actually will start twittering again. Thanks Digsby!
  • wighty
i absolutely love the new twitter functionality, you guys are making it so easy and convenient! keep up the good work, and thank you!
  • Glenn
It seems a step to far to have to open the Twitter window. Could it not just replace the one I currently get on left click of the icon?
  • Straynar
Thanks for the Facebook fix, it's been really bugging the crap outta me.
  • Great, now make it:
    1. DOCK to the side of my screen
    2. Autoupdate and scroll if I want it to.
  • Gabe
I like the inline reply for twitter but you really need to make Directs and Mentions the way it was before. I do NOT want to open a window to see them. I want them accessible right from the tray popup which is the whole point of digsby.

    thank you.
  • Raul
    Nice! It keeps getting better!!
I would like to know when are u going to update the download link (Cnet) to build 70? thanks =)
