Build 46 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 46, r20058 r20063 r20092) which introduces tons of bug fixes and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Added auto-update capability for Windows 2000 users (if you are the admin account)
  • Fixed several bugs that prevented some users from auto-updating
  • Fixed an issue that caused buddy list data (ie: merged contacts, nicknames) to not save
  • Preferences that synchronize with our servers are compressed much more efficiently now

If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then.  We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

We are currently focused on optimizing the most CPU intensive components in Digsby.  Our goal is to lower overall CPU usage by at least 50%.  We are also ironing out a few longstanding bugs and working on making file transfers more reliable.  After that, we’ll push several feature focused releases and begin to focus on getting the Mac and Linux releases out the door.

As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.

Update 1 (1/27/2008 5:40pm): We pushed a small patch to fix a bug with “message of the day” targetting so we can set a message of the day that only alpha testers see on login.

Update 2 (1/28/2008 1:40pm): We pushed out a patch fixing the ICQ login issue that was affecting users in Germany. The patch also includes a fix for a bug that prevented some users from logging into their Jabber accounts and a fix for Hotmail (Windows Live Mail) auto-login.  The new release number is 20092.

Seems you have to *exit* Digsby – not just log out – to get the upgrade to work properly. I tried the log-out trick and ended up with duplicate log-in notifications and failures to authenticate to a couple sites.

Bug report was submitted but thought others might want to be wary.

like huy nguyen said, i got a “connection lost” during the first startup after update. just hit “sign in” again and it worked fine

I’m getting Connection Failed on ICQ. Worked well before…

  11. Steve Said,

    January 27, 2009 @ 6:09 pm

@schn1ef: No other reports like this so it may be a temporary server-side hiccup on their end. If it does not resolve itself please use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log.

I’ve gotta give this ago because it fixes a few of the most annoying bugs, particularly the buddy list data not saving! I keep sending messages to the wrong Ben, with potentially embarrassing consequences… Is there a simple downgrade path? ie simpler than uninstalling and reinstalling

  13. schn1ef Said,

    January 27, 2009 @ 6:16 pm

I already did that. I tested it on miranda (shame on me :) ), and i get no errors at all.

  14. Steve Said,

    January 27, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

@streetdaddy: Remove the file to downgrade.

    @schn1ef: Email you solution.

Can we arrange our away messages by name yet (and I know you can drag them around and put them in order but when you have over 30 of them it gets hard.)

  21. Bryan Said,

I keep forgetting that I’m alpha testing, I haven’t had any problems in a long time.

I don’t do much more than chat, but it’s been flawless for quite a while now.

You guys are doing a great job!

Huge change log – you all have been very busy!! Again great product!! Did have to restart twice to get on correctly. It would be great to have a refresh button that would restart the application when necessary (unless I have missed that feature with so many others at hand}.

Hey all. There still seams to be a bug where if one of my accounts gets logged out (login from another computer for example) the panel where the connections sits keeps refreshing and causes the memory usage to keep going up, and up. After coming back to my PC after using my Mac I found the memory usage at 1.6Gb.

New Tester, don’t know what 46 means, I have build r20092. Was hoping to see resolution to a wide range of Windows Live Messenger 2009 related issues I am seeing. I would assume this would be a priority, considering MSFT’s migration to Live from MSN. Can somebody clue me in on the current status of Live 2009 and Digsby incompatibility? Thank you

  37. Kana Said,

I’ve been using the AIM video chat in Digsby a lot recently, and the video is great, but unfortunately the voice lags a bit. Been switching to Skype because there the video quality isn’t as good, but the voice doesn’t lag much, if at all.

Don’t know if this is yours or AIM’s problem, but thought I’d put it out there as something to work on.

and when are you guys gonna add Skype support?

Keep up the good work! :)

  38. BigBrain Said,

    January 29, 2009 @ 12:06 pm

Hi, about the Linux/Mac releases: What toolkit are you going to use? QT, GTK, WxWidgets, …?
If you don’t have any plans about that I can just recommend using QT, as it’s platform independent and has a very clean API ;)
However, that may just be my personal opinion, Gnome users may not agree with that (whereas KDE users would disagree to GTK on the other hand).

  39. Digsby Said,

    January 29, 2009 @ 7:22 pm

@Kana: We will be adding higher quality voice and video in the future.

@BigBrain: We use wxPython so it is cross-platform. Just trying to iron out the Windows release before pushing the mac/linux builds.

Glad to hear you’re fixing the buddy list saving problems! I would like to rename my ex boyfriend’s contact info to something OTHER than an old pet name, but it won’t save and keeps resetting itself! haha.

  46. limitless potential Said,

    February 1, 2009 @ 12:24 pm

can we have some info on how the mac and linux versions are progressing please?

  47. Digsby Said,

    February 1, 2009 @ 3:18 pm

@Jason: Preferences > Conversations > Uncheck the new conversation windows take focus option.

@Anna: For now, if you exit right after renaming it will save.

@limitless potential: The codebase is cross platform but we want to fix the performance issues and add some of the highly requested features so the Windows release is a little less “beta” – after that we will release mac/linux builds.

Out of curiosity, is the Mac and/or Linux version actually being worked on? E.g. has code actually been written, or is it just something in the works?

    Thanks!

Having trouble updating to the alpha build. I downloaded the tag file and placed it in the main Digsby folder like it said. I tried both logging off as well as exiting and restarting and Digsby still isn’t auto-updating to the new build. I even tried a complete reinstall of Digsby to try to get it working. Am I doing something wrong or am I just too late to join in the alpha test?

I, also, have no luck “upgrading” to the alpha release. I found the info while looking up voice chat for digsby, and while I am enjoying and have had so far good luck with the 19635 build, I am willing to test the alpha and report my experience, but after following the instruction for the add on file, I’m still not getting the new set-up. Advise please.

I’m on build 20092 and I’ve noticed that recently, when my friends go idle (at least those on Google Talk, haven’t noticed on other clients but haven’t paid attention), the timestamp on the “(user) is idle” bar in the message window isn’t updating correctly. For example, they were all 11:33 AM today, even one that just came across at 5:20 PM. So, I’m not sure why the time is stuck, but it’s a little annoying when I try to see when they were idle.

If you need a tester for Linux, Ubuntu specifically, please contact me – I’m happy to assist by testing if it helps to get this great app on other platforms.
