Digsby Demo Video!

One of the great things about being in an incubator is that we get to work right next door to amazing start-ups.  One of those start-ups happens to be Dumbwaiter Design, a passionate design firm with some serious talent.  They’ve made an incredible 90-second demo video for our homepage that shows off everything Digsby has to offer!

Telling your friends about Digsby is now even easier – you can just show them!  If you like the video, give it a 5-star rating and take a few moments to share it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.

digsby_demo2

Speaking of demos…. We will be at the DEMOfall 2009 on Tuesday unveiling a brand new Twitter implementation in Digsby that is unlike any other Twitter client you’ve seen.  If you happen to be attending DEMO, stop by station #48 and say hello.  You can also watch the entire conference live tomorrow at http://www.demo.com.

We want extend a big thank you to Dumbwaiter Design for the hard work they put into this video.  We highly recommend you check them out!

    @Mad4evR

Try to switch from HD to non-HD, or vise versa.
Or refresh the page. This usually happens because the servers have too many requests, but the video is definitely there.

    Fortunately, it doesn’t happen often.

Oh, by the way, this is an incredible video! I am very impressed. The glowing text is a bit too much, no? Maybe it’s just me, but I’m still impressed. Maybe those sliding animations can be added? ;]

  12. vladeck Said,

The animations are misleading, as they do not exist in Digsby event under Vista :) Also, the font for messages should be flat :)

  13. Tom Said,

    September 20, 2009 @ 12:23 pm

It’s good at getting the message across but the music and the ‘what if’ are pretentious. Would be better to go for a fun style rather than the ‘omg life changing apple produc’t style.

this video is really cool, I guess it’s the right promo to get tons of new users.

  15. Digsby Said,

    September 20, 2009 @ 12:25 pm

@vladeck: It’s not a screencast, all the shots you see were created from scratch so it doesn’t match GUI animation 100%

  20. momo Said,

I do think it’s misleading due to the animations not really existing as they are shown. I love the software, but wouldn’t show the video due to the misleading nature of it.

  21. Thomas Said,

    September 20, 2009 @ 12:56 pm

Great video! I like it. Does a great job of summarizing the best features of Digsby :)

  22. Ryan Said,

    September 20, 2009 @ 1:00 pm

Awesome video! Very smooth transitions, good animation, and a FANTASTIC message (seriously, whoever wrote that copy deserves a pat on the back at least)! I love the use of white-space during the messages. It provided a very “clean” look. Using Win.7 was good, and I hope the team must be at least talking w/ Microsoft about partnership/sponsorship details because of that. Oh, and the full-circle imagery was very well used also (your logo @ the beginning, middle & end). The music was a soothing feature. It gave the sense of adventure, but in a safe place, somewhere the listener had been before. As I said, just a great video overall. You & the folks over @ Dumbwaiter did a wonderful job :)

  23. Hans Said,

    September 20, 2009 @ 1:01 pm

There is only two features which in my mind are missing: Plug-in architecture, so that people can add their own features and cross-integration. And alerts. Customizable alerts are one of the most useful things — to alert you to that buddy you’ve been waiting to log on, or to sound a custom sound. If you guys can prioritize those features, you’ll go far indeed. Amazing work with facebook and Email notifications though.

Nice vid! Only gripe is the text moves just a tad too quick to read with filtering applied to the edge. I thought my screen had gone all blured. Crisp clean text is always best for any fast moving advertising message…just my 2 cents! Again, nice vid!

  54. Anna! Said,

The video was really great at showing what Digsby can do, and I liked the style of the animations and the shots sliding across the screen at a quick pace. I agree that the music was a little overly cheesy, and the “what if” theme was too cliche (the combination of the two made the whole thing seem like it was trying to be epic or profound). Other than that the video looks great, very high in quality, but if you have your buds at Dumbwaiter do another for you (I hope you do at some point) perhaps you should go for a more fun vibe, maybe with some funky music, instead of this overly insightful “what if” nonsense.

The video is great! I personally would have put more emphasis on the different chat protocols supported, how they integrate into Digsby, how the conversations are tabbed, support cross-client video chat, etc., but maybe most users are more email- or social network-geared. But now I don’t have to explain it to friends!

  82. Ernest Said,

After PIDGIN started crashing and becoming VERY annoying (even after a few uninstall/reinstalls, which NO program should require its user to do), I gave up. Trillian had become bloated and a resource hog. I dug around online and found a couple of clients. Digsby, by far, exceeded them all. It’s a BIG tough on the resources when just an IM window is opening. Takes a few moments too long actually. I don’t have a crap computer, but just to get an IM window open initially could be streamlined a bit. (Same with you try to open up the buddy list.)

I’d like to see some more sound options, and a few less resource hogging lines o’ code.

I needed an instant messenger program after getting a request to upgrade MSN Live Messenger to 8.1. When I did that, the program did not work, because my dad created the account for me years ago.

So, when I uninstalled the 8.1 version, Microsoft still would not allow me to run the previous version that worked perfectly fine before (all I did new was log out)!! :)

So, I started searching for a new innovative instant messenger software. Digsby is the one and only!! :)

So, stop asking the “what ifs . . .,” and start using Digsby’s Live Messenger service.

Nice video, it tells it all, but i will like some additions like addind Flixster and some other new social networking sites. Also will appreciate it buzz and emoticons can also be added.

Really nice video, I love the fact it’s rendered rather than normal screen capture. It’s as if it’s filmed from your eye’s perspective. Nice!

As a Motion Designer, I find that piece very weak.

    A. Drop the Bevels/whiteglow. Show the text and logo without that stuff. It looks like filters put on by 16 year olds. Sorry to be frank, but that is just a no go.

    B. The soundtrack is cheesy, and obviously lifted from some royalty free database. This can sometimes be okay, but you are supposed to watch out for the cliches. Do not choose the song “uptempo rock – sounds like coldplay” – that’ll usually always be a bummer.

    C. The way the text is shown is not strong neither.

There is no good reason not to show the punchlines, during the onscreen showoff. Right now you have a punchline, then you show how.

Like “What if you could check your inbox without going to your inbox”, then its shown how AFTERWARDS. That’s not economical and a waste of the viewers time. Or at least it feels that way.

    - Dont do the reflections in the floor. It’s so two years ago + this is not done in a quality like fashion neither. This is not how things reflect. The illusion is not sold convincingly, not even as an effect. Instead do a shadow on the floor maybe, or get them to at least fade out the upperpart of the word to give an illusion of distance. Something.

Sorry guys, but I really think if you got this sorted it could be pretty good. Tighten it up, it 1.30 long, thats way too long for whats being presented.

but would be good if there weren’t so much advertising in the software itself. would see digsby competing with the big IM softwares if not for the advertising in the software itself

howtogeek mentioned it well in it’s post on lifehacker

I liked the Video but the slogan is not so great, “what if” that’s the oldest phrase used to promote something new… use something like “AllOnline Inclusive”

Liked the video.. I think it was cute.
I’d still like to be able to customize my sounds.. specially for incoming im and chat. I am currently switching back and forth between Digsby and another multi-messaging program as I need sounds I can hear when I’m not right at my computer. If you had customizable sounds I could go 100% Digsby.
I’d also like to see an interface for Tagged, but that’s minor…

It’s nice to see a team that so obviously loves their product.

Saying that, I’d rather you didn’t make this sort of message pop up as a big fat announcement in the centre of my computer.

Fair enough with messages about updates and down-time, but this one feels just a little too much like advertising.

  136. m0deth Said,

I dig the video, but agree, much like all vids from design/marketing houses nowadays, the creativity of the staff needs to be reigned in abit. Some of the actions portrayed mislead the consumer in various ways, and will do nothing but attract them, then leave them posting here about all those missing nifty features. I work production design myself and could tell right off not only their talent, but also their market inexperience. Unless you guys really like angry posts/phone calls that is. haha

Also, I noticed above that group chat is being worked on along with Skype integration….PLEASE get the cross IM platform chat working first. I don’t need my IM app to make phone calls as much as I need to gather many together for a quicky meeting on their respective IM’s. If I wanted that, I’d use Gizmo.

Cross platform chat is now the ONLY reason my wife uses Trillian for work, then switches to Digsby for all other IM. Digsby obviously handles resource usage better than Trillian 4, but lacks that one seriously needed feature. Anyone who works online for a living can attest to this. Blocking the gratuitous MSN spam IM’s would be another sweet feature too(only allow IM’s from contacts option per protocol would be nice there).

All in all though, nice video, kudos to Dumbwaiter for fine work, it’s just a little too far over the top in a couple areas, which I recognize were done for impact, however, impact should never mislead the consumer.
