@Roberto-
Yes, Digsby checks for updates when you log in to the application.
Shawn Said,

What is with the god-awful new installer? I had to decline half a dozen pieces of junk to get Digsby installed. This is so not good.
If you need revenue, charge for Digsby, don’t sell out your users with shareware garbage.
Samuel Said,

I just started using it, I have tried long enough before i could download it successfully due to poor networking and electricity in our dear country

When are you going to support manual setting/changing of buddies’ icons? It can’t be that difficult if just about every other IM app in existence does it!
Mac Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 12:21 pm
Shawn, I think you’re in the minority. If this app went commercial, they would lose a lot of users, as most of the competitors also provide a free im app.
Digsby makes their money by adding some completely optional apps in the installation program. How hard is it to uncheck a few boxes? And once installed, you don’t need to continue to reinstall as it updates itself when there is a new version.
Thanks again for continuing to improve an outstanding product!

I’ve a question about skype. Do you have the plan to create a module for Skype chat? Only for instant messaging rather than voice communication
Steven Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 1:00 pm
I agree with Mac… charging is a terrible idea. Look what happened to Trillian. And while I personally would pay for a copy of Digsby, I bet most would not. The optional software is a great revenue alternative, and it takes less than 10 seconds to uncheck those boxes if you’re not interested.

when is it going to support file transfer in aim, i can’t receive files from anyone
Ed Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 1:04 pm
@ Shawn,
While I agree with you that the that the installer could have made it clearer for the non-tech savvy on how to proceed with the installation process without having to install all the third party apps, OR it could have warned in the first screen about the additional software that would be included (as the Daemon Tools installer does), I disagree with your comments.
You’re getting a free service, having these kinds of installers is neither a new nor a detrimental thing. Get over it and off your high horse. Just click decline to the shareware and move on with your life. Or, pop a blood vessel and whine over it all.
Jubinell Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 1:04 pm
No don’t charge. Keep digsby free. Ads are OK as long as they don’t go up to a ridiculous amount.
Steve Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 1:14 pm
I’d like to stop getting alerts about your bug fixes. Looking at your change log, there have been absolutely no new features since August (Linked-In support, which i have never even heard of) – everything else is either a bug fix or a performance increase.
I always get excited when updates get pushed… maybe someone implemented one of the more than 150 requested features over at the wishlist (http://digsbies.org/site/wishlist) – but its usually just bug fixes. Please give me a checkbox to turn announcements off. Or will that just go in the wishlist purgatory?
Kenny Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 1:17 pm
I read some pretty aggressive responses about the new installer, but I didn’t mind skipping all the ads. If Digsby can stay free that way, then why not.
The research function when the pc is idle is another good idea, people should really stop complaining and be thankful for your work.
My congratulations to this great product and the devs.

I keep getting notified that there is a new version, but I don’t think it is automatically updating. The blog says the new build is build #45, but in Digsby|About it lists my version as Build 19635.

Hi folks. What’s up with connectivity / installs?
I hear about the new update. But my existing Digsby client won’t connect, and I even tried to downloaded a fresh new client, and it can’t connect to install that, either.
What gives?
Mike Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 2:59 pm
Great app but missing Skype. An while you’re talking about Build 45, why does mine display Build 19594?
Mike Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 3:07 pm
Steve & Mike-
The blog references build 45, which is equivalent to “Build 19635″ in the client’s ‘About’ dialog. I realize it’s confusing, it’s because there’s a logical disconnect between our public releases and internal version tracking systems. There will probably be some changes in the future to clarify this (or at least use separate terminology).
Steve Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 3:30 pm
Thanks for the heads up – I updated the post to list the release number.
We’ll get back to features very shortly. We wanted to solidify what was already there instead of building on top of it and introducing more bugs. If you don’t notice a difference in these last few public release then it means the bugs which affect a large number of users are gone and that is a good thing. We should be doing one more public beta release that is bug fix oriented and then we’ll be adding the most requested features in the releases that follow.
Shawn Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 3:34 pm
I find it laughable that my willingness to pay for an excellent application rather than suffer through shady installers makes me a whiner. If you’re all too cheap to buy your software, you have little to no business throwing in your 2 cents.
My point remains: using a borderline-deceptive installer will absolutely hurt your reputation.

Shawn, Shawn… why are you being so selfish??? i’m from Sri Lanka. People like us have no way of buying software’s… we are all so very thankful for DIGSBY for giving us this awesome free service. if you don’t like free service, my advice is you to quit DIGSBY and buy some software which asks money (for even new updates at times) and still are not perfect as DIGSBY.
So stop writing in our DIGSBY blog and leave this to DIGSBY fans to communicate to improve DIGSBY on each update. your calling us cheap???? look who’s talking… a person who doesn’t even know how to untik some boxes while installing.(which wont even take 10 sec’s and also that’s only when your installing for the 1st time.updates are always automatic)
well done DIGSBY thanks a lot for your service. also thanks for getting rid of that G mail bug. it really helps. and as P.M Said,(December 17, 2008 @ 12:13 pm)
When are you going to support manual setting/changing of buddies’ icons? It can’t be that difficult to support other IM buddy icons which we have installed to our PC??? hope you’ll will look into it.

I am a brand new user (first heard of Digsby yesterday and installed it) and want to add my opinion on the installer.
While I think Shawn is going a bit too far I will say that the installer left me wondering about the professionalism of Digsby. It simply left a bad first impression. A lot of that bad first impression was because I wasn’t expecting it. Frankly I didn’t know what to expect at all. I only continued because of the rave reviews on LifeHacker.
My suggestion to Digsby is not to start charging or remove the optional software but rather to let everyone know about the optional software and why it’s there *before* the installtion begins. More generally, Digsby could do a lot to improve the web site to provide more detailed information about their product. I’m the kind of guy that likes to read as much as I can about a product before downloading and installing it. I felt that the information on the Digsby web site was pretty scarce and that installing it was about the only way I would have to learn about it.
John Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 4:55 pm
@ Shawn
The valid concern should be for Digsby: if an authoritative review site deems Digsby to be a malware launching platform antimalware and hybrid-security applications will likely start “cleaning” one’s system.
.. and by consequence availability to the community. Please consider a tact upgrade.
John Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 5:00 pm
If Digsby wants to generate more attention and collect more users it should consider an extension for Mozilla Thunderbird or a COMaddin for outlook to take advantage of the mystic IMAP4 features in yahoo.
Ryan Said,
December 17, 2008 @ 5:26 pm
I would have to agree with Bob (December 17, 2008 @ 4:52 pm) with the theory that the new installer may leave people wondering about the professionalism of Digsby. It’s the same reason why I don’t have Spyware Doctor or any other applications which use the same type of promotion in their installers. Need I remind you of Apples automatic update scandal with Safari? I would rethink your form of revenue if I were a C.E.O. of the company.

I’m with all those who disagree with Shaun.
It’s a great free app, and the fixes are coming thick and fast. I have 2 gmails and appreciate how good the service is when it comes to fixing issues that pop up. Yes the install is filled with options most don’t want, but the click off factor can be done in no time, so no drama really.
Thanks Digsby crew.

all i would really like to see is a drag and drop for files on yahoo. i always have to close digsby and turn on my yahoo messenger to send things like songs or pictures to someone. digsby asks if I would like to send the file when i drop it into the chat box, but it never sends it or registers it in the chat box at all after I hit yes. Don’t usually post fan boi comments but in view of some of the negativity I felt compelled.
Digsby – on my oldish SP SP3 machine runs smooth and light, really hardly any footprint at all. Its checking 5 email accounts for me (NOTHING ELSE does that so seamlessly – I’d use it for that alone!), I don’t see the install ads or options coz I just update – haven’t had to install in ages – but listen guys – even free has to make a buck – and given that it’s “once only” – well good luck to the Digsby developers. I love the update process (tho the numbering thing is weird) – does it – lets me know with nice personal message – gives me the option to check what the changes are – and here I am commenting.
In 8 or 9 months I know there have been bugs, but only coz I read about them here – my experience has been bug free – maybe yours will be too!
One small whinge – file transfer to MSN is still pretty ordinary compared to the native MSN>MSN. Otherwise a wonderful, nearly great, app.

Its only borderline deceptive if you have gotten lazy at paying attention and fly through installations. Even though this installation design it much more colorful and interesting then the common install which will make you pay attention more. Second, you dont understand the business model if you think these people don’t have the right to put in their thoughts. You can opt out of everything, you dont have to pay. If it remains that way its absolutely free, and you have no reason to complain. Actually its you who doesn’t have the right to put in your 2 cents if your just going to bitch about it.

You can easily proceed with the installation avoiding bloatware if you click `Cancel` on the first screen, and then ‘Accept’ – that effectively skips bloatware. However, I have a different problem with the new installer – installation is automated and thus doesn’t let you to choose where to install, and I don’t like installing at `c:\program files` – I keep my Digsby on D drive…
There is a workaround, tho – once the new installer downloads digsby_setup.exe and executes it – it’s located in your temp folder and you can pick it up from there, copy it to some safe location (as it gets deleted after installation) and run it – it’s the same installer we’ve been using so far and it will let you to install Digsby on your favorite location.
James Said,
December 19, 2008 @ 12:34 am
I agree with Shawn in the sense that the installer is borderline deceptive. I still think he’s crazy — but right about that one point.
I downloaded it, started to install, and was baffled by what was going on. I deleted the EXE and redownloaded, thinking I had somehow downloaded malware. To my surprise, it was just the new Digsby installer. It’s not the fact that it’s offering up what some might consider bloatware, it’s the way it’s presented. When installing a program such as CCleaner it presents you with a clear checkbox and a blurb of text saying what is being installed (in that case, yahoo toolbar). With Digsby’s installer it’s a little more frustrating, with you choosing the software you want to install and it doing it all at the same time with some “tryed-to-be-slick-but-didn’t-quite-succeed” graphics.
Conclusion? I think Digsby should continue bundling in the bloatware/adware/freeware/shareware/software that gets them revenue, but do it in a more industry standard way.

Once again, Digsby’s automatic updates fails.
I opened Digsby tonight and saw that it was, once again, downloading updates. Downloaded 13.95KB, stopped, and refused to open Digsby even after restarting (giving me the Windows “screw you” beep whenever I tried to open it). I had to uninstall and reinstall Digsby.
I like the program. It’s nice (aside from the ridiculous crap from the installer) and is the best thing out there next to Adium.

Hi there, I use iGoogle and email on one of my google accounts, and I have another 2 which I use only for email i.e.
Google Account 1: Email & iGoogle
Google Account 2: Email
Google Account 3: Email
Prior to this build, I could go to igoogle.com and login with my first account. Then when opening email for any of my other accounts, my iGoogle login would be maintained. With the new version, it seems that Digsby completely logs me out of mygoogle account when switching to the new one, which means my iGoogle page changes.
e.g.
1) I go to iGoogle and login with Google Account 1
2) I open email for Google Account 2 using Digsby
3a) (in the past) iGoogle is still logged into Google Account 1 and GMail is logged into Google Account 2
3b) (with the new version) iGoogle and GMail are looged in with Google Account 2
Is there any way around this?
Thanks so much for the amazing app!

I love this IM client – however, there is one problem that *really* annoys me, especially when I’m trying to play games. Every few seconds, Digsby spikes up 20%+ CPU usage, causing my system to lag. The faster you are going to incorporate voice and video chat (with multiple users), the better are going to be the reviews.
A high quality chat is not what is required at first, but given the host of useful features you have given, adding a voice&video chat will make it truly complete. Users wouldn’t mind too much as long as they have some method of doing what they wanted. Only when they require a higher quality, they would want to move on.
I can see that there is currently a huge development work going on, but you surely need to hire more people to penetrate the market well.
Since what you are trying to achieve is an “all-in-one”, it is sensible to say features first and features + superb quality later.

Nice installer. What a piece of work. It was such a good application before you added spyware into your installer.
It’s also worth mentioning the ‘help digsby do research’ that eats up your CPU power to give $$ to the people who make digsby. This option is enabled by default.
Sorry, will never use this crap again.

I cannot connect to my yahoo messenger from office. However at home it works fine. Plus the normal yahoo messenger is working at my office. Should i change the port? what alternative port do I have to use for yahoo messenger?

I wish they would release a version for Linux, there are so many Linux users emerging, it would be great for a Linux version, I’m running Ubuntu.

Is the ability to search through all chat logs (and not just on a single day) anywhere on the horizon? I realize there’s a lot of other stuff that rates higher… just wondering if it’s been formerly discussed at all.

I thought Thai language problem(not shown) has been fixed since 40 alpha release or did you decided to remove it?

Brandon,
The installer isn’t nice, but you think Microsoft is the answer? Microsoft is never the answer, unless the question is “how to drive people madly insane with unreliable products that are impossible to troubleshoot?”
Dumbass

@Vermillion: It should work fine. Make sure you are using a font that supports Thai. Submit a bug report if you are having trouble.
@Deathtospam: A better log viewer is definitely on the to do list.
@Kator: It may have been marked as spam. Feel free to repost
@Brian: We do get a ton of Linux requests and are as eager as you are to get a Linux build released.
@Ria: Use “Help > Send Bug Report” after it fails so we can take a look at what is going wrong. It is most likely a firewall issue.

Awesome job! I can’t wait to see what else you guys have in store!

I just want to say that this is the first build I’ve tried, and I have nothing to really complain about. There is a lag if the system is idle and then refreshed with Digsby on, as well as the lag it creates when first starting the Digsby service. Otherwise, it works great without a single crash in the last few weeks of using it. Running Vista x64 too, which makes it even a bigger compliment considering the tempermental nature of the OS.
Question – Does this program still do the Seti@home equivalent/thing where it uses cpu resources while idle? If so, it would just explain why I get the lag when I take it out of screen saver mode.
Fantastic Job! I’ve shared with a lot of other friends who’ve replaced Trillian with this as well.
This is even FAR better, imho, than the Trillian Astra build I had been using before. Thank you!

Overall the program feel and function is excellent.
However – without group chat I just can’t use the product. That feature is key for what I do, so guess I will have to stick with Trillian for now.
Regarding all the banter about costs – the reality is these guys need to and should get paid for developing quality software. Most folks can’t waste years of their lives and not make money. At the same time there does not have to be a single solution. For me – I prefer no ads and no junk software install and would pay for the software. But for others who have commented here maybe the two other options or even another is the best. It is possible to offer the software via these different flavors and each person can pick their poison to properly compensate the developers.

are there problems with the msn servers today?
Steve Said,
January 8, 2009 @ 6:48 pm
@Brandon: No known issues. Submit a bug report.
@Jason: The lag is most likely all the code that gets removed from RAM when it is not needed for a long period of time being copied back into RAM. We’re working on optimizing performance as much as possible.
