Build 64 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 64, r23944 r24046) which introduces many new features and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Facebook: A completely revamped Facebook Newsfeed that brings the full Facebook experience to Digsby.  Now you can post your status, comment on friend activity, “like” status updates, and even browse through photo albums.
  • MySpaceIM: We added full support for MySpaceIM to our arsenal of protocols.
  • Achievements: Share your achievements within Digsby with friends via Facebook Newsfeed.  There is more info about this feature on our FAQ.

This release is packed full of new features so we are expecting some new bugs to pop up. If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.

If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then.  We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

Update 1 (9/15/09 1:09pm EST): Small patch to help track down an issue with disappearing accounts.  If you notice that any of your accounts have gone missing, please submit a bug report immediately.

Is there any way to turn off the new facebook feature and use the old one? If I want to post/like/comment etc I'd go to facebook, where everything is a lot easier to read because its not crammed into a smaller box, its way to cluttered now in my opinion. Also the main reason i liked the facebook thing on digsby in the first place was that it showed all updates instead of just whats on my newsfeed, like i said if i wanted to see my newsfeed i could just go on the internet. Having the option to turn it back to the old one would be awesome.
  • Liko
I have an error when I try to update my statu on Facebook :

Unknow error ('ascii' codec can't encode ch

Sorry I can't see the end of this message
  • Sean n
i prefer the old facebook layout and the minimalistic view it had.
That or at minimum could an option be added to hide display pic and just show the users name or something if it is not already there as they take up quite a bit of space.
Like pip said ive noticed some slight lag on my eeepc nothing major.
    keep up the good work
  • Arek
Please add Gadu-Gadu protocol to Digsby!!
  • Pip
I, for one, don't like the new Facebook interface. I like the very minimalistic expressions of new posts, seeing when people invite me or send me messages, etc. I don't want all the pictures, and I certainly don't want all my News Feed items crammed into that small space. If I want the FULL Facebook experience, I'll open Firefox.

Not to mention, it seems to create a lot of lag on my Eee PC, which I use a ton, and I keep having to re-authenticate.
  • Digsby
@Pip We're definitely working on making Digsby faster and optimizing space. Are you clicking 'remember me' for Facebook authentication?

    @Midnitemist There is a direct installer here - http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe

@Skip Make sure the file is in your main Digsby folder. It may take a few restarts.
  • midnitemist
i have a slow internet connection. i would be thankful if the installer packed in one single file. so if i have to install i dont have to download any single file anyomre from internet. anyway, this is great program. and i get used to it. thanks
  • Skip
I just followed the instructions to update Digsby to Alpha. I'm only getting the beta version (Build 23848). Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks!

*dreams of one day being able to use Digsby again on my Mac! Go go Digsby!!
  • Ray
I would love to see the ability to select logout of FB chat when I go away with the other clients so people dont still think I am at my computer.
  • Thndr
I like the more interactive facebook interface, but I have a few suggestions that could make it even better.

    1) Option to revert to a classic view without pictures, but still keep the ability to comment and like.

    2) Ability to open a window with the feed in it instead of a mouseover of some kind. Not really an important thing, but can get annoying to keep mouseovering my facebook feed (granted this could be used for other feeds like linkedin and twitter)

    3) Not sure if this could be integrated, but facebook has introduce a new lightweight interface that has a few neat features that could be used in the app. http://lite.facebook.com has features like Top Stories, as well as as a notifications page that allows you to reply to wallposts and such. (Although since this is new and still improving, I am unsure if there is anyway to use it. But it seems perfect for low bandwidth apps on the computer and portable devices)

Now I'm not asking a whole Facebook experience, just fast and simple way to keep up on things without loading the whole facebook website.

    Keep up the good work.
  • Warwagon
I don't know, but something tells me its not facebook servers. People have commented to the fact i'm the only one on there list that logs on and off. One person I was talking to asked "Why do you keep logging on or off" as in none of her other contacts do that. I've gotten that from a few people.
  • Warwagon
    Thanks.

ya its been happening for months.
  • Digsby
@Warwagon: Unfortunately, that is due to stability issues with their servers so there is not much we can do. Hopefully, they resolve the problems soon. We've seen this happening on both their website and within Digsby.
  • Dylan
It should specify who the messages are to. It currently specifies who wrote the post, but it doesn't say who it is saying it to.
    Thanks
  • Warwagon
Well facebook chat sill disconnects extremely frequently. Its starting to annoy my contacts
  • Anthony
@Digsby: Huh, I didn't notice that, actually. Cool.

Think the hide feature can be integrated into Digsby's Facebook Newsfeed, for on-the-spot cleaning?
  • Digsby
@Anthony: On the Facebook website you can hide those stories and Digsby's feed will reflect that and not show the ones you have hidden (you can hide all stories from a certain app). However, the stories will not be hidden until the next patch, which is a bug in this alpha.

@sabor-x: Right click menu missing was an oversight, will be fixed in the next patch.
  • sabor-x
I like it a lot. Honestly I really miss being able to double click facebook to open it in a browser, but I got used to right click then selecting home. Sadly now even that is gone and I have to open the feed then go to the top and select home. Just seems to be getting harder to use digsby-facebook to access my actual facebook account online. Other than that I LOVE IT!
  • Robert
I've been using the new Facebook infobox for about a day now and I can now properly say I really like it, it's truly a spectacular improvement.

The spacing between the different news feed items could perhaps be a bit bigger or seperate different items more clearly by using horizontal lines. Especially when people did quizes or used apps the layout tends to lean towards chaotic.
  • Anthony
I'm glad to see Digsby updating... but I'm not digging this new Facebook feed. Like... at all.

Is there any way to get rid of those third party application notices? You know, the quizzes and such. I have them hidden with Greasemonkey scripts in Firefox, and would LOVE to get rid of them in Digsby.

Really, I'd love to just be able to use the older Facebook Newsfeed, if anything. It was simple, and I like that. A lot.
  • Digsby
@Tony: It is almost at the very top of the priority list. We'll be tackling it shortly and then moving on to Mac/Linux.
  • Tony
Great product. All the problems I face are a combination of my computer and the fact that I have so many IMs and emails being used in Digsby - can make things slow sometimes. But that is not really the fault of Digsby.

What I would like to say is that I hope you really make IM conference a higher priority. All IM clients I know of offer it in some fashion. It seems to me that the other, shiny, features keep pushing this feature farther down the list. Digsby really needs this IM essential to be competitive with other similar tools. When can we expect that? Where is it on the priority list? Is there a way we ( the users ) can help get it to the top until it is finished? Sort of discouraging seeing all these new features when I know people have been asking for IM conferencing for a long time. I know you guys are working hard, so I am not in the least mad.

Thanks for the great product - I for one really appreciate it.
  • Digsby
@All: The facebook login issues seem to be proxy related. We're working a fix for the next patch.
  • Vidavi
Same here cant't log to fb anymore
  • MrsBaer
At the moment facebook is having major issues and not displaying things properly on the status updates. Just fyi, incase that is some of what the problem is.
  • Digsby
@All: If you are having trouble logging in to the new Facebook, get it to fail and then use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log. In the description, mention exactly what happens step by step and where it fails.
  • Facebook integration appears to be broke. After it tries to connect I get a cheesy mis-sized web browser like window pop up that asks me to authenticate and allow digsby access to facebook. After that I "skip" friend invitation (I have no idea why this is there) and I get a message saying it is OK to close the window. After closer that window the facebook line in the buddy list disappears.
  • Al
Brilliant! Wanted this for a while... :)
  • Guest
    * I cannot log into Facebook anymore, cannot enter the password.
    * My chats are not logged anymore.
  • StuartHemming
I wish some of the important IM stuff was being addressed, like group chat.
  • Zachary
All my friends in MyspaceIM show up as numbers in my contact list. Shouldn't it show their names?
  • If you kept your blog up to date then you wouldn't have needed to do the rush patch job.

BTW I sent an email about how you need to internationalise the Amazon and Ebay links in searches.
  • Psykar
I should mention, I still love it, just that little issue ;)
  • Psykar
The scrolling that happens when you expand a comment or a like section on the facebook newsfeed is disorienting.
At first I thought it was randomly scrolling, but it simply reloads the page with the section expanded then scrolls it into place.

It kinda hurts the eyes somewhat and makes you think it's moved...
  • Paul
Good job on this update, hope to see more protocols supported still (Skype, Xfire)
  • Tim
While these new features and enhancements are nice, it makes me wonder why basic features such as individualized alerts per buddy, individual character bold/italicize/underline, etc have not yet been implemented...

Another thing: the Defaults.yaml file has a TON of options that I believe should be all offered in the Tools > Preferences. I was really surprised by how much I could really control Digsby if I wanted to (e.g., not opening the buddy list on startup), but it requires making a prefs.yaml file...

Simple changes can make Digsby oh so much better. But good work with this update.
  • Flame
KICK ASS! I love you all!
  • Eia
    Mac ftw!
  • Ninjustin
Nice, Nice, Nice. The facebook integration with the Pictures is so awesome.
  • Michael
Now all we need are Mac and Linux versions. Yay Digsby!
  • Dylan
    Sweet! Thank you.

But I don't know if I want people to know how much time I spend on Facebook. I think I would be ashamed. So it is nice to have the option to turn it off. Thanks!

But I love having the FB Newsfeed in Digsby. AWESOME!

My only nitpick (and it is a nitpick) - I wish I could re-size the new Digsby Facebook newsfeed box. Some of the newsfeed is too much for the box.
  • kaot
really love the new FB-Newsfeed - but: was it really necessary to put that giant ad for digsby in it, before you got an option to edit any prefernces?
    :\
For the moment i don't see what the "achievements" will do, but i'm curious to find out.
Mentioning that: Facebook gives out error-reports, saying the developers (that would be you) and facebook are working on it - is that on your side or Facebook?
  • kingofspam
whoops I meant the notifications area
  • kingofspam
is there anyway to hide certain things like friends new wall posts with the new facebook info box?
  • jvalero
I'm really digging the facebook comments! Great work +1. Tweeted and facebooked :)
  • Digsby
@Tim: The error is on their website so clicking through it should work fine. However, if you are stuck at login use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log and mention in the description how far you got and where you got stuck. We have a few quirks that we need to fix in the new login sequence.
  • Tim
I can't seem to connect to the Facebook news feed. I keep getting "script errors on this page" popups
  • Wonderful FaceBook revamped plugin. thanks much digsby team... you guys are changing the forefront of what could be known as the Super IM :)
  • Jamie
@Jamie: Never mind I see how to do it now that Robert said something.

@Robert: Thanks for helping me figure out how to collapse the comments.
  • Digsby
@Jamie: Clicking away will collapse it and scroll back to the beginning of the story.

@Juarez: Digsby will count for you and post a newsfeed story when you pass major milestones (ie: Sent 1,000 IMs)

@Dustin: Not getting other reports like this. Submit a bug report if it continues to happen.
  • SouL
I Miss the info that shows when my friend's have new wall posts, That was quite useful.
Also, the ability not view the hidden posts (as per the facebook homepage) in the stream would be nice.
  • Robert
@Audrey: Hah, funny, just reported that bug as well. Within 10 minutes they said they'd have it fixed for the next release.

Btw, how do I see the comments without jumping to the editbox to add a comment myself? I miss a 'View Comments' link. Now I have to click Comment, scroll back up again to the first comment and then don't accidently click anywhere that will cause the comments to collapse again.

Also, having clicked 'Comment' to view the comments, clicking on links simply collapses the comments again instead of opening the link and keeping the comments open.
  • Oh, stupid me - it is an alpha release :) Sorry for the lame question.
  • Paul Demy
great work!!!!!! myspaceim works flawless too!
  • Dustin
I think I found a bug in this release, IM logging is not working correctly. None of my conversations after the update have been fully logged, however a few have had a portion of the conversation logged but everything after a certain point was discarded.
  • I still do not get the "achievements" thing - is there any way to count my sent IMs? If it is a plugin, I can not find it - if I have to count it and write it manually in my status, I do not see the point :D
  • Jamie
I love the new Facebook infobox. Works great! 1 suggestion though...can you make a way to collapse the comments? Sometimes someone has 30 or more comments on their page and when I click to read them I end up scrolling forever even though I may not want to read any more of the comments.
  • Digsby
@Audrey: Already fixed and going out in the next patch :)
  • Hysterian
Just perfect. Now Facebook is usefull for me.

what about implement to external link screenshots like http://www.websnapr.com/ ?

if u dont understand me. if anybody in normal conversation or facebook send link, on mouseover it view link screenshot. Just an idea...
  • Audrey
I think it would be nice if the people I have hidden on facebook (they post annoying things I don't care about) didn't show up on Digsby... but they do... so this feature while cool is less useful to me.
  • Chris
nevermind. signed off then back on and i had to go through a process.
  • Chris
Facebook is stuck at authenticating for me.
  • Robert
Ooh, I like the new Facebook infobox. Much more Twittery so it's a lot more usable now.

Small feature request, on the facebook tab in Digsby's main window could you display my name instead of my email address? Emailaddress looks ugly.
  • lorn
Yeah! Myspace IM finally got added. Love Digsby. I was wondering when that would get added. Thanks for all your work :)
  • amazing!!! and very innovative, I probably will have to log in to facebook lot lesser now...
  • Digsby
@All: A patch we applied this weekend fixing a major WordPress vulnerability broke commenting on the blog. It is now fixed.
  • Guest
    Great work!
