Digsby is Here!
Hello world! After two years of super stealthy development we are ready to introduce you all to digsby! The idea for digsby came from a simple concept – online communication has become too complex. We all use IM, email, and social networks to communicate with each other and sometimes managing it all can be overwhelming.
Digsby is an easy to use IM client that helps you organize everything under one roof! It lets you log in to your existing AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk and Jabber accounts, merging everything into one buddy list! But that’s just the beginning. Add your email and social network accounts and almost everything you need to know about your online world is just one click away! Check out the screenshots or feature list sections to see a glimpse of what digsby can do for you.
We are currently in private beta so if you need an invite code, shoot us an email to be added to the list. If you are one of the lucky few and you have an invite code click here to go download digsby. If you experience any bugs please let us know and we will fix them ASAP! We’d also love to hear any suggestions about how we can make digsby even better!
Enjoy,
The Digsby Family

@John: We are aware of this issue. We have not optimized digsby yet - we wanted to get the product out there to start getting feedback from real users! Our number one priority right now is bugs, optimizations, and memory leaks. You will see that number go down considerably within the next few weeks.

I’ve got to say, I’ve been looking for a Trillian (pain in the ass, no updates) and Pidgin replacement for a long time, and this blows me away. Plus I get Gmail and Facebook updates in a cool little pop-up? What?!
Only thing is the memory usage, as previously stated, but come on - it’s the 2nd day and it’s still only using half of what my Firefox does. Maybe you guys can fix their leaks too?
Good stuff.

This is a wonderful program. I’ve been running it for several hours now, and it’s been running solid. I do like how some of my favorite chat window themes from Adium are packed in Digsby. (iMac crashed last year, so I’ve been on Vista ever since.)
Keep up the good work,

This is nice. But.
- If the message contains scandinavian letters (ÖÄÅ), digsby wont send it.
- Trillian avatar fails to appear on messenger-list.
- Why cant the contacts-window be as cool as the login-screen on vista?
- Some offline people are sorted out as a mobile-contacts. If i sort out the mobile-contacts, they dont appear on offline contacts. It is annoying to see offline-mobile contacts with the regular online folk.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses - very happy to see that Google Apps for your domain email accounts are included as so many new apps don’t account for this!
At the moment I’m having some problems when IMing on gtalk and msn - if I type a long message and try to send it (by hitting enter) it won’t send and I have to split the message into 2 parts? Also pasting long lines of text into an IM message yields the same result…

Geo Said,
February 7, 2008 @ 7:04 pm
Wow, this is great. A little hard on the memory usage but that’s all. I was wondering if you could set a default account to use to IM your MSN contacts. When I try to IM my MSN contacts, it defaults to using my Yahoo ID and that’s not exactly what I wanted. Thanks. Great application! As of now I’m participating in two IM client beta tests. Trillian Astra and Digsby. Now it’s the question of which one will win me over in the end? I just hope that Digsby will be my ideal lean mean IMing machine. Also I was wondering if I was allowed to share my invite code with a couple of eager friends or am I supposed to keep it secret like Trillian’s secret operation?
Steve Said,
February 7, 2008 @ 7:25 pm
@Geo - we are working on memory usage as we speak. Besides proxy support that is our highest priority. Feel free to share the invite code. As for the “default from” - it should only mess it up once because it doesn’t know which account to select. Once you send one of your friends a message it will remember that “from” selection for next time. Please send in a bug report if that is not the behavior you end up getting.

I love this program already, and will probably never run Trillian again! The only thing I can think of to improve it is having a little more control of how the systray icons are displayed. Currently it’s an all-or-nothing deal. I’d like it if I could collapse the soc icons into one instead of separate facebook/myspace icons. Same with email, I imagine, but I only use one email account. This is not even remotely a deal-breaker, though.
Oh, one more thing. I know it’s not really a soc network, but if it were possible to add LiveJournal to it, that would make it so über-kakkoii I’d be ecstatic.
Steve Said,

I was browsing various feeds this morning on my Blackberry and crossed an article about Digsby. The name caught my attention for some reason so I read the article, and liked what I read. Later went looking into it. Best thing I could ever have done
Although I have accounts for nearly every service, from Google Apps for your Domain to MSN, Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook, Myspace, and etc., I was never a big fan of any single client with the exception of Google Talk. All others are cluttered and full of unnecessary bloat whereas Google Talk was clean and it offered an important feature: Email previews. I tried Pidgin, Trillian, and a few other multi-network clients and I couldn’t get into them. They weren’t appealing and they didn’t offer email notifications with previews; at least as well as Gtalk did. As soon as I saw what Digsby had to offer with email, I was sold.
I’m flat-out impressed with the features and can easily overlook the bugs (after reporting them of course), for Digsby is from now on, the client for me.
Thanks Steve

Love this program, but want to suggest some improvements:
1. The pop-ups and the main chat windows are not synced. I mean, if you chat in the pop-up, the chat lines will not appear in the main chat window.
2. Context menu for tabs: Some of my buddies have short ID, therefore, when I click on their tabs, I usually mistakenly click on the close button. There should be a context menu that allows us to do various actions such as lock tab, close tab, close other tabs, etc…
3. Make it portable: I don’t know where the settings are stored, but use the ini file and keep it in the same folder would be good for portability. Also, the code should be tweaked that way too, I think. Portability is always good so that I can carry all my Digsby profile with me on the go.
4. Video & Audio chat: I usually chat with my girlfriend through webcam in Y!M. Unless Digsby has this feature, I will stick with Y!M for a while.
That’s all so far I can remember! Will let you know in the future.
But thanks for the great software!

I’ve used pretty much every AIM program out there, from the beta days of Gaim through Pidgin, to Trillian and lots of mac based prgrams as well (Adium, Proteus, etc). I must say you guys have put together a great little program here, very clean, very feature rich, does everything i want it to even in the beta stage (except being able to edit my buddy info
After being a mac owner for many years I do see a very striking resemblence to Adium; same skins, same chat windows, etc. Will you be adding Digsby only skins and features to it or do you think you guys are going to continue to utilize Adium based skins here?
PS: if this program can get down to the memory usage of miranda im, im sold.

I’m very impressed. I’m a longtime Adium user on my home mac, and have been desperate for a good IM client on my work PC. Trillian doesn’t do it for me, Pidgin is ugly, AIM/MSN/etc. have adverts. Digsby (while it may be focused on social integration) is already my favorite Windows IM client. I was using Miranda, but this is better. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work!

If you are like me, you have an “inverted colour scheme” which means white text on a black background. You application’s menu has a “white” background and “Windows’ default” font colour so on my screen all the menus are white on white. And to add insult to injury, your comment box that I am entering this into has a “your default” background and “black (or near to)” font colour. Define both or neither, not one or the other.

On the social networking side, is there a plan to integrate Peekamo? It’s a free SMS service and also a social network. It works really great, and it’d be great if I can send Peekamo SMS through Digsby interface, as well as setting my peekr (a kind of status).
Also, a way to set up online mode for individual IM protocols would be neat. Sometimes I want to be invisible on Y!M, but available on MSN (since it’s my work network).

This is a great product and i am extreamly impressed. It has saved me a considerable amount of time trying to access my internet profiles. You should consider including a search bar within the main window. Also a way to see online photo albums such as Flickr would be a great feature. The ability to be away on one IM account and available on another would be a very good touch. Some sort of blog support such as twitter support would be nice. Lastly i would recomend making more skins or opening them up to be easily cutomized by a user of the aplication (im sorry to say while it is a much better aplication then windows live messenger it doesnt look very good compared to it)

Awesome, i’ve been using Miranda to have all my IMs in the one client, but this adds Facebook and Gmail too! Nice!
One thing i would really like is the ability to now display my contacts avatars on the buddy list. And when they are not displayed the amount of vertical space used by each buddy is reduced.
What this would mean is you can see more buddies on screen (without having to keep scrolling up and down to find them).
Nice work!

I’m very happy to have stumbled across this, I’d just ran through a gamut of multiprotocol im clients last week looking for something I actually got along with, and just really couldn’t get into any of the windows applications. I’m very pleased with Digsby so far with memory consumption and other issues being addressed.
One feature I’ve yet to see in any non AIM client yet is to change the title of a window when you alt+tab out of it to change the title of the conversation window (as it would appear in the taskbar) from the name of whichever conversation tab you were on to “N(X)” with N= Number of conversations open, and X being number of tabs with new content in them. I’m expecting pop up notification will likely makeup for not having that, but it’s a feature that I still think was really solid.

@Matt - you can turn conversation logging off in preferences and you can delete the logs in your “My Documents” folder

Issues:
1: More skins, preferably one that makes this look like a normal windows app. I personally have never gone for the whole ’skins’ thing in apps.
2: Control-U does not clear the entire line like other IM clients
3: You cannot turn off smiley graphics.

I run AVG anti-virus on my computer, and as I’m trying to download Digsby it comes up with a virus alert and will not allow me to continue the download. Anyone else have this problem, or run AVG?!!? I’m dying to try out Digsby, but haven’t been able to do so yet! Any help would be appreciated.
Steve Said,
February 9, 2008 @ 7:54 pm
@Skorz - more skins on the way!
@Sabrina - we use the NSIS installer to package digsby and some anti-virus programs return a false positive. I guarantee that there are no viruses, spyware, adware, or bundled third party apps in digsby. You can read more about NSIS False Positives here:
http://nsis.sourceforge.net/NSIS_False_Positives
(anyone have a solution to this? email us at bugs@digsby.com)

Hi guys! Thank you again for great IM!!!
I wrote a review for Digsby in Ukrainian language on: http://www.forum.poltava.ws/soft-ta-igry/4279-digsby-im-icq-yahoo-google-msn-new-post.html
I sent you some mails Steve and want to help you with translation of it to Ukrainian and Russian language.
Thanks!

How does one know if they have gotten a auto update? Do you plan on including webcam and or voice any time soon?
Steve Said,
February 10, 2008 @ 11:24 am
@Brant - in due time… adding social networks will take priority over video/voice but we will get to it.
@Andrew - when you launch digsby it will update and then say “Update Successful”. You can click “Help” > “About” and you should be on Build 12111.

This program is amazing! I’m looking forward to have a feedback forum! Just wrote a review in portuguese:

Keep with the good work! I’d like to help with the pt-PT translation though
Zathman Said,
February 10, 2008 @ 12:20 pm
Steve, perhaps you should implement a little pushed message from “Digsby.com” that notifies a person when an update is available (for those who don’t quit chat clients or restart their computers all that often). So then people would know there’s a new update available
Steve Said,
February 10, 2008 @ 2:28 pm
@Zathman - no problem… we have the system in place but didn’t want to bother our users with messages. However, you are not the first to ask for this and it will make life easier on us since we will get less bug reports for issues that are already resolved.

Is there an easy way (or any) to attach hyperlinks to words in away msgs or in conversations? It’s late and I might just be missing it….
dima Said,
February 11, 2008 @ 8:47 am
Any plans to support Sametime? IBMs protocol.
Keith Said,
February 11, 2008 @ 10:43 am
So far: 1) Cannot attach hyperlinks to words in conversations or away msgs, 2) Cannot see when users are typing, 3) Users log in and out (various protocols) - I’m guessing Digsby is still a little too sensitive with regards to checking other users’ status.
Keith Said,
February 11, 2008 @ 10:45 am
edit: Not being able to double-click words in IM boxes to select text (whether single word or 3 times for line/paragraph) is also something I miss. Having to click drag to just select one word kind of sucks. (Yes it’s nitpicky)

Hi, I’ve requested an invite really looking forward to trying this as I have used trillian for ages now and would really like to see a different take on the multi IM scene
Justin Said,
February 12, 2008 @ 2:00 am
Hi, it would be really nice if you added an option where new IMS wouldn’t pop up on the screen, but rather as a blinking icon in the system tray. Some people feel instant message conversations are very private, and if someone is over your shoulder, and an IM pops up on the screen, sometimes that’s an awkward situation.

This app is most impressive. I just can’t get it to log on to my GTALK account though on a vista machine. The same account works just fine on XP

Just wondering, what toolkit/framework (GTK, QT, .NET) do you use; also, I havn’t installed it yet, not on my own computer now, but do you/do you plan on including at least a simple IRC client? That’d be nice.
Sabrina Said,

sometimes it will have my “from” account be from my yahoo (if I am writing to an MSN friend)…when i have never used my yahoo name to write that particular person. anyone know how to keep this from happening? and how do you change it, once it’s happened once?

Hi,
Wonderful app.
Support for Sametime would make a big difference for us at work and there is a public API for ibm lotus sametime as well so it shouldn’t be that hard to implement for you.

Hi,
This app is absolutely wonderful, I’ve been using it for a whole day now and I’ve got to say, it’s so much better than Trillian in every way. I’d recommend this app to anyone! Good job, and thanks for releasing it. By the way, i found this app on http://www.download.com - my most trusted download site.

I am new to Digsby, but its became my favorite IM client in no time.
but now I am facing a problem with gtalk(digsby) at office. I am running the same at home without any issue. But at office, gtalk says “connecting” and it stays in that state forever.

I love Digsby, but like others, I have been cursed with the ” You are signing in too often” issue with Yahoo Messenger. It doesn’t seem to matter if I am currently connected to YM, recently connected to YM, or haven’t connected in hours.

Digsby is awsome! I’ve been searching for a multi-protocol messenger application that I like for the longest of times, and now… it’s finally here!
Thanks guys… keep up the good work!
PS: I can’t seem to get it to connect from my workplace (proxy and domain)…
