Build 61 – Private Alpha Release
We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 61, r23296 r23311 r23319 r23406 r23428 r23447) which introduces many new features and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
- Brand New Look: We released a sleek new default skin called “Windows 7″ (by Derek Erdmann). If your skin is set to anything besides the default, this will not override your preference. If you prefer the old look, go to Preferences > Skins and choose the “QuickSilver” skin.
- MySpace Newsfeed: In Build 60, we switched the Infobox over to a full blown web browser (WebKit). We said that the change would make the Infobox much more versatile and this is the first example of that. We are introducing a completely redesigned MySpace newsfeed which now includes a full Activities Stream, status updates, and the ability to browse through photos.
- Global Status: A new Global Status dialog makes it easy to set your status across social networks and IM accounts. You can access it from the status dropdown on the buddy list or by double clicking any social network. The Global Status dialog also makes it easy to share links (via digs.by) and pictures (via pic.im)
- URL Shortener: We are launching a URL shortener just for Digsby users under the domain http://digs.by. In the future you will be able to access a history of links you shared and statistics about how many times they were clicked.
- OneRiot: We partnered with OneRiot to make it easy for you to search the real-time web. Just hit “Ctrl + F” on the buddy list to search.
This release is packed full of new features so we are expecting some new bugs to pop up. If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.
If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then. We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.
Update 1 (8/3/2009 6:30pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a few issues that have been reported. This brings the release number to r23311 Please keep the bug reports coming so we can make this build solid and release to all Digsbies!
- Fixed a bug that caused auto-update to not work for some people behind restrictive proxies
- Potentially fixed a bug that caused MySpace login to fail (if you were having trouble please confirm this fix)
- Fixed a bug with the global status dialog to fail when using it to reply to a tweet and also setting the status elsewhere
- Fixed a bug that caused the status dropdown to scroll backwards
- Better error messages for network errors in the global status dialog
- Removed timestamps from self status on MySpace because they were inaccurate due to incorrect timezone info
Update 2 (8/3/2009 7:45pm EST): We pushed out a small patch fixing a bug that caused Digsby to freeze or crash when setting your Facebook status. This brings the release number to r23319.
Update 3 (8/5/2009 5:15 EST): One more patch fixing a few bugs that all you wonderful alpha testers have reported. One feature was tossed into the mix as well. The new release number is r23378.
- Added spell check to the global status dialog if you have spell check enabled in Preferences > Conversations
- Fixed a bug that prevented you from using non-English (unicode) characters in your MySpace status
- Fixed a bug that caused pressing “Enter” in the global status dialog to close it instead of setting status
- Fixed the “reply_to” bug in the global status dialog
- Fixed a bug that prevented you from adding two MySpace accounts
- If your clock is wrong, this prevents MySpace from authenticating – new error dialog is more clear about the cause instead of just saying “Authentication Error”
- Added the ability to set a blank status, which will clear Facebook and LinkedIn statuses (Twitter and MySpace will do nothing)
- Better error messages for Twitter errors in the global status dialog
Update 4 (8/6/2009 1:30 EST): Another day, another patch for bug fixes. The new release number is r23406. Thanks again to our alpha testers!
- Fixed a bug causing MySpace accounts to get stuck in the “Connecting” state
- Fixed a bug causing MySpace to show a count for “Alerts” when there weren’t any.
- Fixed a bug that caused excessive account data syncing
Update 5 (8/11/2009 11:15 EST): Small things can make a big difference. The new release number is r23428.
- Fixed a possible memory leak related to keepalives for xmpp-based accounts that get disconnected.
- Fixed another bug that caused excessive account data syncing
Update 6 (8/12/2009 11:25 EST): The new release number is r23447.
- Fixed a bug preventing Twitter authentication errors from showing
- Fixed a bug causing the status dialog to be populated with HTML escaped text when re-tweeting
- Fixed a bug that caused a ‘connection failed’ error to be suppressed for MySpace accounts

just a small feature for one of the next releases:
Can you make links clickable in the pop up notification?
Especially twitter messages hava a lot links in it.
Digsby Said,
August 3, 2009 @ 4:05 pm
@David + Bradleycorn: One of the team members is working on per-character formatting and group chat is next on the to do list.
@Aithne: Glad to hear it. For newsfeed items of photo uploads, click the photo to browse through them right in the feed.
@Kamala + Luis: We want to make similar improvements to Facebook + Twitter. After that the focus will be to release Mac/Linux. We know that we are WAY overdue…
@ThomasK: That was added in the release (sort of). Clicking a Twitter popup with a link will now open that link.

Had a short “flirt” with Trillian Astra because of the better file transfer and Status Message support on ICQ. However, Digsby is way too cool and charming to make these few flaws spoil it for me!
Im so back to Digsby and I promise to be faithful from now on!

Great new features in this release! The Global Status feature is an excellent way to keep your social networks in sync.
One feature it still lacks is an info box for yourself, since longer status messages don’t fit in the one-line box. You also can’t see your own profile image without going into the Preferences menu. Google Talk shows your image next to the status box as well as a box on mouseover.
Samuelson Said,

WOW! I freaking love Digsby even more now! I was a loyal Pidgin user for a long time! But I have several different computers… So the fact that one login is all I need for like 7 accounts, that’s badass! I only switched to Digsby (a few months ago) because Pidgin was messing up with Yahoo and Myspace (they fixed the issues, but I am NOT going back to them!)
Digsby is freking awesome. Just like Firefox, I am not switching any time soon!
I use Linux on some systems. A mix of Fedora, Ubuntu, and Puppy Linux. So I get stuck having to use Pidgin. Pidgin isn’t a bad messenger. But each time I install Linux, I have to login to each account, install Plugins for Facebook chat and Guifications, and change settings the way I like them. Digsby minimizes all that into ONE (UNO) LOGIN! So Digsby and Linux would be a GREAT COMBO! Actually, they should REPLACE Pidgin with Digsby! Every time you install Ubuntu or Fedora, DIGSBY SHOULD BE THERE!
ROCK ON DIGSBY! By the way, just installed the Update on three different computers. I am very happy with the new Digsby. Especially Twitter and the new theme!

Andrew Crowell Said,
August 3, 2009 @ 10:35 pm
For some reason, on Windows Vista SP1, 32-bit, I get a weird bug with the new skin. The word “Digsby” will at random times pop out above the Search Box. I don’t even know why that’s there, since there’s no menu bar at the top of the window frame, so it shouldn’t even be there.
Here is a screenshot of the graphical glitch in action: http://xs142.xs.to/xs142/09321/digsby_skinbug827.png

I am a little confused right now, the global status is a great idea and i’m glad we can untick places we don’t want to set it.
But what about when you double click the status area box, you can set a status in there, or does that just simply do any IM you have enabled?

Digsby Said,
August 4, 2009 @ 6:40 am
@Liam: Typing a status into the status box on the buddy list just sets your IM status.
@Mafiotul: Both were made to match Windows 7 so no surprise there
@Heather: All of those are on the to do list.

I would like to suggest a feature to the GMAIL notification popup.
It currently has Mark as Read and Archive. I often want to do these 2 things.
Can you make it so that when I click Mark as Read, the message does not instantly disappear if I dont move the mouse away from it. That way I could then click archive!
Thank you for a great app!
Digsby Said,

Zachary Said,
August 4, 2009 @ 3:11 pm
When you click on a notification for Gmail, it opens up only the message, and clicking “open” in the list of messages will only open the inbox. It would be appreciated if instead it would open the full interface with that message loaded, since the single message view does not allow you to archive, mark as read, nor does it show your reply.

Is there any way we can set the status character count back to a countdown from 140?
Digsby Said,
August 5, 2009 @ 7:07 am
@Kenneth: We thought about this one quite a bit. It feels more natural seeing a countdown since you want to know how many characters you have left while tweeting. However, other social networks don’t have the 140 character length limit that Twitter does. Since it is a global status dialog, would it still count down if you’re setting your Facebook status? That wouldn’t make sense (especially for someone who doesn’t use Twitter). We didn’t want it to behave inconsistently depending on which account you have selected so we made it count up. Suggestions?

This could be done:
While setting up the global status, if Twitter is checkboxed, display a countdown of characters from 140. Otherwise, use the count up, or you could totally do away with the character count.
P.S.: Darn this thing if the tags don’t work; it’ll look shitty, and make me look stupid!

Needs to be a quicker way to open set global status.
Right click > Set is just one click and move too many, where as double clicking existing networks means you have to check the other boxes *ponder*
Digsby Said,
August 5, 2009 @ 7:20 pm
@Psykar: Agreed! We couldn’t come up with anything elegant. Anyone have thoughts?
Kenneth Said,
August 6, 2009 @ 12:41 am
Even though I use Digsby for AIM, GMail, and MSN also, I never set a global status. I consider tweeting to be more like a mini-blog than a status in the traditional sense of the word in the IM world. (I wouldn’t say “Away from keyboard, meeting” in Twitter, but I would in an IM client).
Therefore, perhaps you can do what Aditya suggested above and have it countdown if the user is only using Twitter, or have it as an option in the preferences somewhere to countdown instead of countup.

If I understand correctly, you just need to delete the “tag.yaml” file located at “%PROGRAMFILES%\Digsby”, then restart Digsby. Digsby should ‘upgrade’ to the newest stable version.

Any chance of selecting the URL shortener we want? Not a big fan of the digs.by bar at the top of my new shortened links…
Psykar Said,
August 7, 2009 @ 12:09 am
@Digsby – seems obvious to me:
Digsby icon:
-Single click = open / close contact list
-Double click = open ’set global status’
Currently single click does nothing!
Otherwise:
Triple click?
Prehaps a separate taskbar icon you can enable, I know i’d use it, even if it had no other functionality.
Mouse gestures over the icon? (not a fan but some people like them)
Psykar Said,
August 7, 2009 @ 12:20 am
More I think about it, having a double click on the digsby icon to set IM status may be nicer (just so quick when you don’t have to open any windows!) with a separate icon to double click to set global status.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but here goes:
I really like the new status (away, available, mobile, arrow for groups, etc) buttons for the Windows 7 theme. However, I preferred the QuickSilver look much more in terms of the rest of the skin (no bolded menu items, nice grey gradient, etc). For some reason, it just doesn’t feel as nice and slick with the Windows 7 (at least for me).
Is there (or will there be) any way to combine the two together?

The Digsby installer asks you to install way to much extra crap.

i was wondering, is there not an individual “alert me” feature? There just seems to be a generic alert me that lets me know when anyone signs on but nothing for only specific people. is that a feature intended for future releases or is it already available and i just don’t see it haha

looks like there is still no “auto away” when the computer is locked. Sadly I guess I’ll have to stick with Pidgin for now

Hey @digsby,
Great work. I’m a big fan of the new behavior for opening gmail messages. I’m really impressed throughout with this software, and it is now a staple in my computer setup (firefox, digsby, notepad++, vlc). That’s a pretty excellent group to be a part of IMHO.
I’m sure you hear this all the time, and I don’t even use them, but Mac/Linux
All my Mac/Linux friends are jealous everytime they see me using or talking about digsby. It’d be nice to share this with them.
Keep it up team. I’m more and more impressed with every release.

If someone posts a hyperlink to his status, you can see the hyperlink, but it’s not active. You cannot click the link…

The ability to share an image through the Global Status box is awesome. What about adding this ability to send that to a particular contact on your buddy list instead of broadcasting it to everyone? I am always wanting to send pictures to my friends and it’s a pain if their client doesn’t support file transfers. It’d be so nice to have my client upload it, create a link, and them just be able to click that link to see it. Thanks!

Love the release so far, the skin is excellent. I will echo someone above asking for Skype integration (that would be awesome but I can see how challenging that would be so I’ll just agree for now, don’t expect it anytime soon)
One thing I’ve noticed with this release is that I’m having some troubles authenticating with AIM servers. One of my accounts doesn’t get past authenticating with this release, but the other works fine.
I tried it using other clients and it worked fine so I’m not sure if this is a problem on Digsbys side

To me, Skype is still the big that lacking in Digsby. Otherwise, I was just comparing it to Trillian earlier today and Digsby wins all around. However, Skype is a big thing to just not include…

Are there plans to add myspaceim functionality? It would be a plus. I’m just wondering if I should get my hopes up or not.
