LifeHacker Hive Five!

After launching Digsby into public beta on March 20th of last year, one of the first great pieces of publicity we got came from Lifehacker.  They did an article on the Five Best Instant Messengers (“Hive Five”) less than two weeks after we launched and Digsby made the list!

We were very excited to be featured and even more excited when the article made the front page of Digg the next day!  It created a tremendous amount of awareness and gave us our first big push into the spotlight.  We went from 40,000 users to 70,000 users in just 4 days!

user_growth

Even though we didn’t win the poll, it was a very impressive showing for a two-week old product with just 40,000 users.  Now that we have over 1 million, let’s show them what we’re made of!

Lifehacker is holding another “Hive Five” competition and you can show your support for Digsby by voting here:

See that 17% for Pidgin? That there is the linux users.
See that 10% for Adium? That there is the Mac users.

  • This brings me to an idea:...

I've been marketing Digsby ALL OVER THE PLACE.. I know at least 210 of my Facebook Friends have signed up... the week ALONE =) It's harder to keep up with how many of my Twitter friends have.. because not everyone tweets the "I'm on Digsby.. etc"

Anyway, you know what I really wish!? That you guys added the "Custom URL" to the Social Networks Preferences.
  • Paul
I would like to see an option to use a socks4a proxy and the ability to set proxy settings for different protocols individually, so AIM could use a proxy where a gmail account might directly connect.
  • It was because of LifeHacker I discovered your IM, Trillian left a lot to be desired, this had everything I needed and wanted, only if you can connect my Skype account :D
  • bruno
Ok. That's nice and beautiful but, where's the linux version?
  • Mike
what is the digsby team working on for the past 2-3 months? even one new major feature would be nice once a year..jesus
  • Digsby
@Ped: We have not gotten any other reports like this so I think it may be unrelated. Can you find out from them why it was disabled and email us at bugs@digsby.com
  • Ped
Hi, i just got my facebook account disabled. I image it was the frequent API calls made by the digsby client.

I'd appreciate if you'd work out this problem with the facebook team, so we can continue to use this great product.

    Thanks.
  • I got everyone in our office to switch to digsby. 5 more users for you guys, you're welcome!
  • thariezie
    I want DIgsby for OSX!!!!
  • DigsRetro
Seems like your pop-up this morning to vote for Digsby was a day late and a dollar short. Polling is closed. Too bad, you might have received more votes.
  • Swami
Digsby - I switched from several other IM to this and I love it :)
  • HellKey
    poll closed :'(

The best, greatest IM(++), I have ever used. I have tried pidgin , trillian, and many other. But digsby is superb, The King of IM. Love u digsby. My vote is there for you will always be urs.
  • Ankit Shekhawat
I am upset, I ain't voting for Digsby anywhere, till you guys roll out group chat support.

    Its about time guys!
  • anon
I'd like digsby better if users could turn off the self-promotional spam that has been increasing lately when we login (like the "announcement" that led to this page)
  • Raju Chacko
Hello Digsby friends, I responded to your message immediately after seeing it (around 1:00 AM on 7-28-09) but unfortunately found the poll CLOSED ! I would have voted for you if it was open.

Digsby, you can be justifiably proud of yourselves! You have a great product. I first came to know of you through Techrepublic (a division of CNET), which is a recognition by itself and although I haven't used it for very long I find Digsby efficient, powerful, friendly and very easy to use -- good work, keep it up!
  • You just got my vote ;)
  • surebelasah
Voted. I use DIGSBY since its BETA version, its love at first sight.

    Thanks.
  • Just love Digsby... Voted already... I hope that you win this time... If you don't, I still love you anyway... Go get them People... Let's make the widget better... Using it for all my sites... Check it out in action at:

  • Brendan
Voted. Love the program. Congrats guys.
  • Voted!

We're losing to Trillian by a margin of 5000. Never really liked the old versions of that. Wonder if Astra's any good...
  • Ian
I have been using Digsby for a long time and have got a lot of other people using it but I don't think I can vote for it being the top IM at the moment because of the MSN lost messages bug. This bug has been around for a long time and no serious bug finding seems to being done on it.
  • sarah
i voted - great app guys!
  • Reupbert
    Vote++;
  • Chris
was a trillian fan then i got sick of it crashing all the time, not working with vista, having to pay to get good features, then someone mentioned Digsby on their away message, and i haven't looked back! :) keep up the good work guys!!!
  • BOO! Don't spam me when I open up Digsby with messages like this. You guys are great an all (minus how heave you are on the resources), but I don't like being asked for my vote when I'm trying to load up your program and it's taking forever.
  • Mooney79
Definitely voted for you guys. I've been using Digsby since the beta and it has really grown as a great program. The crap in the installer is kind of annoying, but not really a big deal for me. Can't wait to see more great features in the future. Keep up the good work!!
  • Shmoe
Are you kidding me? Trillian Astra is a huge piece of crap. Digsby FTW -- hands down. Anytime. Anywhere.
  • WolfeSVK

I forgot to add to my list (above) of what I like about Digsby. The don't-likes are always more memorable. Lol!

    I (also) like about Digsby:

    - The ability to merge different contacts'/friends' accounts into one entry! (Bravo!)

    - The pop-up bubbles for new messages, that also let you reply! It's even better than Growl in Mac.
  • Marko
The different clients are very similar.

    I like about Digsby:

    - The email checker. This is what has me hooked.

    - The upgrades are installed automatically!

    I don't like about Digsby:

    - I don't want to have to open another client every time for group chat. This is a basic feature. Come on.

    - I've had problems with displaying my selected status. In particular, it showed me to be Available, when I selected to be Invisible.

    - It's eaten up a lot of system resources and crashed many times.

    - The emoticons have been the ugliest in the business, and have gotten even worse, since the last update.
  • P-trick
voted, but im still waiting for myspace IM!
  • Asav

  • Raul
Digsby is (for sure) the best messaging tool ever!!! all my friends are switching to digsby!! =)
  • More Social Networks! :-D
  • Dougore
When is Digsby going to be available for linux?! Please! ;-)
  • @Chris, @Ed - Just remember, Digsby is free. Free isn't "free" so these guys have to do something to keep the lights on and feed their families.

    I voted, love your software!
  • Ed
I would appreciate if digsby stop sending me the annoying announcements. Also as Chris mentioned, none of those "crapware" should be in the digsby installer.

Other than those, digsby is a good client.
  • Tyv
I'm really loving digsby but for now it doesn't support my most used chat methods. Xfire & IRC both need to be supported, and IRC needs to support xdcc for downloading off bots. I seriously look forward to it's progress though as it's tremendously better than anything else I've tried similar to digsby so far.

Maybe extension or plugin support just to have the basic chats for xfire such as pidgin can do? It could allow users to contribute more to other digsby users and grow into something like firefox with worldwide use and a large community that makes it into a swiss army knife of IM. Perhaps certain ones could be "Dev approved" to show a dev has reviewed it's code firsthand.

What ever it is you do though I'm looking forward to it. Keep it up guys.
  • Wade Goodman
My vote is in for Digsby. How about an iPhone app?
  • @Chris - Digsby is free, and they have those crapware offers as a revenue source. In an ideal world I can see your point, but the reality is that not all companies have an endless well of VC dollars to help them remain free indefinitely whilst maintaining a great customer experience (Twitter, Facebook, etc).

That said, 99.9% of savvy users can simply decline the offers. To clueless users who accept them? Well, maybe they don't fully understand what they're doing, but what can you do. Crapware may be crappy, but it's not malicious.
  • Nej
    Voted.

On a side note XFIRE plugin please.
  • RONALD POWERS
My vote is definitely cast!! Keep up the awesome work.
  • Voted, and got at least 10 people in the US and Mexico to switch to Digsby, keep it up!
  • pxd
Get your basics pumped in and I shall start blasting about you soon. Have been still waiting for the basics features aka group chat and etc.

    Nonetheless, voted to the max!
  • Congratulations Digsby!! :)
  • Digsby is an excellent App. I use it all the time. Tried Astra and it just didn't compare. Great work.

    You have my vote. :-)
  • kimmy
i voted for you woooohoooooo Digsby Keep up the good work and hope to see lots of new features
  • Marcin
I just voted for You guys! good luck! keep up the great work!
  • Zach
I really can't give you guys the win, I truthfully wish I could as I love your messenger program. I cannot send my computer illiterate friends to install your software. I don't want to have to walk them through a whole bunch of NOs in the initial install to keep their computer nice, then go through the process of keeping Digsby from using their CPU cycles while inactive, as that's something that's not quite something they'd want.
  • someyoungwriter
Digsby has my vote.... looking forward to the next update of the product... keep up the great work, and consider perhaps adding txt to speech for those of us with visual disabilities.
  • Voted.
Need sametime protocol and linux version will gain more...
Option to save IM conversations on server accessible from anywhere will be good.
    Thanks for excellent digsby
  • Tyler
    I don't think it's a big deal to un-check a check box.

    I vote YES for Digsby!
  • Corporate user
I have requested this feature before...
please support wpad proxy. I login to Digsby from within my corporate vpn and outside. It's a pain to kill the Digsby client, change my proxy settings (No proxy to corporate-proxy or vice-versa) every time I login to my vpn or vice-versa.
  • Digsby
@Chris: Yes, in the comment above.
  • Joan Barros
I think yes, all those things that digsby lacks are true (Other OS Support, poor webcam support, not supporting GTalk file protocol, Skype support, or even mIRC support), but you have to remember that this is a brand new product and I think that for a product that has only One year It's a very complete product. Even more full of features than most of It's category out there.

So to the Digsby Team: Keep up the good work and hope to see lots of new features like those I pointed out above ;).

    Great Product I love it!.
  • I like how your blog post doesn't mention any of the negatives brought up by Lifehacker:

Digsby's widespread popularity has recently taken a few lumps after they began including crapware in their installer and offering affiliate money to users who help them spread said crap. Despite these two moves, which have left quite a few users grumbling, Digsby is still a chat client with quite a lot to offer (and you can skip the bloat with the right download).

    Any response?
  • Hi all,

Good luck, I just voted for you guys! The stats show that you are in the lead at the moment. Great work!

    Cheers from the Netherlands,

    Patrick
  • Its an excellent messenger, particularly the support for google apps is phenomenal, but shouldn't you be exploring other channels as well- something that a seesmic desktop is doing as well?
  • Mysti
For me all I need is for digsby to do an irc client plugin and Im good.
  • Mysti
I was on life hacker and voted for digsby before I even saw this post. GO DIGSBY!

  • Aditya Gautam
    me <3 Digsby,
    We <3 Digsby!
  • Digsby is excellent; in fact, I got this message once I logged in.

But where are the Mac and Linux clients? It would definitely be undisputed champion if it was available on all three operating systems.
  • Kostaz
I voted for Digsby one of the best programs I have on my PC.
A few more things(off-line chat,WLM voice call etc) and it'll be perfect.
  • Digsby
@Chris: There is no spyware in Digsby. The installer shows offers for other products, all of which have been screened for viruses, spyware, malware, etc. It is TRUSTe certified for meeting rigorous privacy policy standards. The offers are 100% optional and you can decline or accept them during installation.
  • Chris
I would of voted, but some of the arguments that were brought up, mainly the spyware that you have to be careful of deselecting when you are installing. It would be nice if you made a link to the non-infested installer as widely published as your other links.

Other than that, I have used it before, but have stopped because the current client I am using has groupwise messenger support, which we use at work.
  • kc
Keep up the great work guys and gals!
Although I love Digsby, I can't vote it #1, simply because no mac/unix support as of yet. Maybe next year!

  • Dave Rogers
I voted!! You have Facebook chat, something that others don't and it's what I love.
