LifeHacker Hive Five!

After launching Digsby into public beta on March 20th of last year, one of the first great pieces of publicity we got came from Lifehacker.  They did an article on the Five Best Instant Messengers (”Hive Five”) less than two weeks after we launched and Digsby made the list!

We were very excited to be featured and even more excited when the article made the front page of Digg the next day!  It created a tremendous amount of awareness and gave us our first big push into the spotlight.  We went from 40,000 users to 70,000 users in just 4 days!

user_growth

Even though we didn’t win the poll, it was a very impressive showing for a two-week old product with just 40,000 users.  Now that we have over 1 million, let’s show them what we’re made of!

Lifehacker is holding another “Hive Five” competition and you can show your support for Digsby by voting here:

Although I love Digsby, I can’t vote it #1, simply because no mac/unix support as of yet. Maybe next year!

I would of voted, but some of the arguments that were brought up, mainly the spyware that you have to be careful of deselecting when you are installing. It would be nice if you made a link to the non-infested installer as widely published as your other links.

Other than that, I have used it before, but have stopped because the current client I am using has groupwise messenger support, which we use at work.

  13. Digsby Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 11:31 am

@Chris: There is no spyware in Digsby. The installer shows offers for other products, all of which have been screened for viruses, spyware, malware, etc. It is TRUSTe certified for meeting rigorous privacy policy standards. The offers are 100% optional and you can decline or accept them during installation.

I like how your blog post doesn’t mention any of the negatives brought up by Lifehacker:

Digsby’s widespread popularity has recently taken a few lumps after they began including crapware in their installer and offering affiliate money to users who help them spread said crap. Despite these two moves, which have left quite a few users grumbling, Digsby is still a chat client with quite a lot to offer (and you can skip the bloat with the right download).

    Any response?

  25. Joan Barros Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 12:39 pm

I think yes, all those things that digsby lacks are true (Other OS Support, poor webcam support, not supporting GTalk file protocol, Skype support, or even mIRC support), but you have to remember that this is a brand new product and I think that for a product that has only One year It’s a very complete product. Even more full of features than most of It’s category out there.

So to the Digsby Team: Keep up the good work and hope to see lots of new features like those I pointed out above ;) .

    Great Product I love it!.

I have requested this feature before…
please support wpad proxy. I login to Digsby from within my corporate vpn and outside. It’s a pain to kill the Digsby client, change my proxy settings (No proxy to corporate-proxy or vice-versa) every time I login to my vpn or vice-versa.

I really can’t give you guys the win, I truthfully wish I could as I love your messenger program. I cannot send my computer illiterate friends to install your software. I don’t want to have to walk them through a whole bunch of NOs in the initial install to keep their computer nice, then go through the process of keeping Digsby from using their CPU cycles while inactive, as that’s something that’s not quite something they’d want.

  40. Sean Mulholland Said,

@Chris – Digsby is free, and they have those crapware offers as a revenue source. In an ideal world I can see your point, but the reality is that not all companies have an endless well of VC dollars to help them remain free indefinitely whilst maintaining a great customer experience (Twitter, Facebook, etc).

That said, 99.9% of savvy users can simply decline the offers. To clueless users who accept them? Well, maybe they don’t fully understand what they’re doing, but what can you do. Crapware may be crappy, but it’s not malicious.

  41. Wade Goodman Said,

My vote is in for Digsby. How about an iPhone app?

  42. Tyv Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 2:05 pm

I’m really loving digsby but for now it doesn’t support my most used chat methods. Xfire & IRC both need to be supported, and IRC needs to support xdcc for downloading off bots. I seriously look forward to it’s progress though as it’s tremendously better than anything else I’ve tried similar to digsby so far.

Maybe extension or plugin support just to have the basic chats for xfire such as pidgin can do? It could allow users to contribute more to other digsby users and grow into something like firefox with worldwide use and a large community that makes it into a swiss army knife of IM. Perhaps certain ones could be “Dev approved” to show a dev has reviewed it’s code firsthand.

What ever it is you do though I’m looking forward to it. Keep it up guys.

  43. Ed Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 2:09 pm

I would appreciate if digsby stop sending me the annoying announcements. Also as Chris mentioned, none of those “crapware” should be in the digsby installer.

Other than those, digsby is a good client.

  44. Chuck Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 2:25 pm

@Chris, @Ed – Just remember, Digsby is free. Free isn’t “free” so these guys have to do something to keep the lights on and feed their families.

The different clients are very similar.

    I like about Digsby:

    - The email checker. This is what has me hooked.

    - The upgrades are installed automatically!

    I don’t like about Digsby:

    - I don’t want to have to open another client every time for group chat. This is a basic feature. Come on.

    - I’ve had problems with displaying my selected status. In particular, it showed me to be Available, when I selected to be Invisible.

    - It’s eaten up a lot of system resources and crashed many times.

    - The emoticons have been the ugliest in the business, and have gotten even worse, since the last update.

  53. Marko Said,

    July 27, 2009 @ 4:29 pm

I forgot to add to my list (above) of what I like about Digsby. The don’t-likes are always more memorable. Lol!

    I (also) like about Digsby:

    - The ability to merge different contacts’/friends’ accounts into one entry! (Bravo!)

    - The pop-up bubbles for new messages, that also let you reply! It’s even better than Growl in Mac.

I have been using Digsby for a long time and have got a lot of other people using it but I don’t think I can vote for it being the top IM at the moment because of the MSN lost messages bug. This bug has been around for a long time and no serious bug finding seems to being done on it.

Digsby, you can be justifiably proud of yourselves! You have a great product. I first came to know of you through Techrepublic (a division of CNET), which is a recognition by itself and although I haven’t used it for very long I find Digsby efficient, powerful, friendly and very easy to use — good work, keep it up!
