Build 37 – Lean Green IMing Machine!
We just pushed Build 37 (r18938 r18955 r18971) to all users. This is our first public release since switching to an alpha release cycle. We want to thank the 3,000-ish alpha testers who helped over the past few weeks. The release pushed out today to all users includes all the features, bug fixes and enhancements in Builds 35, 36, and 37 on our Change Log.
On another note, Mashable is holding the second annual Open Web Awards. Please show your support by nominating us for the “Social Networking Applications” category using the widget below.
Voting has ended – thank you for your support!
As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.
Update 1 (11/12/2008 7:30pm): We just pushed r18948 to all alpha testers in order to test a fix for a crash we just hunted down. If all goes well it will be pushed to all users shortly.
Update 2 (11/13/2008 9:45am): We just pushed r18955 to all users, fixing a few small bugs. It does look like a crash was introduced that is affecting a small portion of users. We’re working on hunting down the cause now.
Update 3 (11/13/2008 7:00pm): We just pushed r18971 to alpha testers in order to test some crash fixes we implemented. If you would like to help us find crashes, see the instructions here: http://blog.digsby.com/archives/62
Update 4 (11/14/2008 9:50am): We just pushed r18971 to all users – tons of crashes were fixed thanks to the debug testers. There may be a few edge cases left so if it crashes for you with this new release somewhat regularly, please run the debug release for a day or two so we can get a crash log and fix it!

I really wish you wouldn’t push all the message window styles with each release. I finally got smart and saved my modified CSS in a diff location, but I still have to copy it over and restart every update

Thanks for the update guys. I really like the alpha -> beta -> public flow.
Matt B Said,

I’m with Daniel. I would absolutely love to see an option to turn off smilies. Right now I need to manually edit the config file for this every update.
But I appreciate the new release cycle. Keep up the good work.
Matt B Said,

Bah, there it goes again! LOL.
Steve Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 12:56 pm
@Matt: There is an option to turn off smilies in “Preferences > Conversations”
@Daniel: Since the API for customizations like conversation themes is still changing we don’t officially support making changes or adding your own themes yet. However, once it is set in stone we will release official documentation and let you add your own.
Matthew Said,

Everytime you install a new build it screws with your skins folder/windows/etc. Just a suggestion but it shoulden’t change these folders unless they are fully incompatible with the build.
Trunks Said,

I have to say, I really dig digsby. It’s a bit of a lifesaver for me, rather than eating up all my resources having all those programs open. And the MySpace and FaceBook integration is fantastic.
Great work Team Digsby.
L Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 1:42 pm
is there a way where you could have it so you can still see the contact even when they aren’t online? I’d like that. Also, I know on some others they have it so you can see the last time someone was online or “seen” is that possible to have?
Other than that, I like it a lot.

I’ve voted at least 30 times lol. GO BUG-ME-NOT!
Apicio Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 1:53 pm
@Lex: This is because Digsby is still in beta and ” a lot of the code that runs these customizations is still changing” (cit. Digsby Wiki).
I love you Digsby Devs. *_*
Voted and confirmed !

Is the alpha test over?
Or am I still a tester when the next alpha version comes out?
TimG Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 2:23 pm
Do alpha users need to do anything to migrate back to standard update paths?
Also, I second Trunks. Digsby is by far the most useful application I have come across in years, and the response of the DEV team to issues is phenomenal!!!
Thanks, folks.

Keep up the good work guys! I really love Digsby. It’s got everything I need and more, clean interface, and now it is very lite on resources! Woo Hoo! Good luck in the Open Web Awards. You’ve got my vote.
Mike Said,

@TimG, @Beeni
There will be more alphas, and you don’t have to do anything more to use them. The alpha version and the ‘release’ version are currently the same, but hopefully there will be another alpha update by the end of the week. =)

Steve Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 3:24 pm
@Person: Your default browser preference is not set.
@Harry: Both of those are on the to do list
@matt: I think they send an email with a link so you need to confirm those votes
@L: They will still appear in the offline group (except facebook). In the “View” menu you can disable grouping of offline contacts so they appear in their original groups.

I’m still getting disconnected and reconnected to my office Openfire server. I love Digsby, but this is annoying. I really hoped the vcard fix would have fixed the problem. Would there be any reason to uninstall and reinstall?
Steve Said,

@Parker: I think we have a ticket for the issue that is causing it for you already (2 milestones out if I’m not mistaken)

Oh, sorry.
Anyway, you guys rock. I’m looking forward to experiencing the new improved Digsby.
Mike Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 3:37 pm
@Chasten
you can restart digsby (it will update on your next log in) or if you’re in the population of users that have issues with the updater, you can download from http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe
Erika Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 3:46 pm
Thank you! You fixed the problem with Hotmail alerts not showing the sender name (It was coming up as “None” instead) but there’s another issue that’s been plaguing the program – every time it auto updates, it resets the smilies to be initial ones, so if you changed them (I use the rice balls ones from Digsbies) you have to close out and reimport the smilies.
Suggestion – allow smilies to overwrite from the user folder like Skins do, please?

Why is Digsby nominated for the Open Web Awards? Since when is Digsby Open? Is there a link to the source code somewhere that I’m just not seeing?
Mike Said,
November 12, 2008 @ 7:42 pm
@Apreche
the “open” in “Open Web Awards” has nothing to do with open-source, as far as I can tell. Feel free to check out their rules at http://mashable.com/openwebawards/rules/ . You’re correct that Digsby is not open-source.

Digsby is one of the best chatting programs Ive used ever, thanks for the new release!
Hopefully it will fix my problem with the last release, I kept gettting high memory usage for the program – I mean like 400000K on windows task manager. I had to kill the process to get all that memory back, and it always slowed my computer. Is there a known issue about that?
Burke Said,

Hey guys,
Just an FYI – I’ve modded the log files location so that Digsby can run off my thumbdrive; when opening Disgby tonight, I get a “Digsby PreUpdater.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close>” message from Windows. Getting ready to revert to standard log locations and see if that fixes things.

Hi guys…
just gota say – love your work. keep it up!
a small but… i recall this being mentioned some time ago, i still have problems with msn chat whilst im on ‘invisible’ (error 913)
Im on the latest upgrade. am i doing something wrong? or is it still a digsby issue? Thanks!
Apicio Said,
November 13, 2008 @ 6:49 am
Mmm…My Facebook is ever in (connecting…) with the latest alpha release.
I sent a bug report btw…
Steve Said,
November 13, 2008 @ 8:34 am
@Apicio + Aditya: Use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log. Removing and adding the account under social networks should do the trick though. They had some issues with their servers a day ago that cleared some people’s authentication token.
@sarano: We’ll add that feature shortly. We need to upgrade the MSN protocol.
@Burke: It was a bug that caused the auto-updater to crash when installed on FAT32 drives. That was actually fixed in this release so the next update you do will go smoothly.
@Twit: Yes – that memory leak was fixed!
@yay: Thank you – we will keep pushing to make Digsby even better and greatly appreciate any help in spreading the word.
@Chanz: We will add this feature in the future for sure.
@Selwonk: That is very high up on the priority list now
aenigmatic Said,

convert from tr1ll1@n .. and let me say, this is by far a superior product in terms of update cycle, stability, features, and look and feel. I have converted about 1/3 of my buddy list =)
Is there any way to implement the “add to conversation” feature that is part of Windows Live messenger? I have noticed people can add me to one and it will allow for multiple people in the chat window, but there is no option for me to add others.
Thanks for all of your hard work. If you ever need an ad agency, let me know!

Any chance of getting digsby added as a recognized im client in avast! antivirus? I love this software, but it would make it even better if file transfers, etc were scanned by antivirus software.
Steve Said,
November 13, 2008 @ 9:51 am

running version 18955 on Windows XP 32-bi with SP3. I went to bed last night, leaving Digsby connected over night, when I woke up in the morning my AIM had disconnected and it wasn’t even trying to reconnect. This keeps happening through multiple versions of Digsby.
Other than that, no problems with crashing or anything else. Keep working on it guys, you’ll find the last few issues!
Steve Said,
November 14, 2008 @ 9:02 am
@Randy: Next time it happens submit a bug report.
@Twit: See our latest blog post. If you can help us hunt down the causes we would greatly appreciate it. A build will go out today or tomorrow fixing most of the crash causing issues.
@Person: It may not be fully set. There is a default setting for opening links and a default setting for opening HTML files. Try setting IE as the default and then setting your browser back as the default. If you use Opera, there is a known issue that causes Opera not to launch links when it is already running.

i think this is happened for the first time in any version of digsby i have run, but after this update, for the first time ever, digsby crashed… twice… but my observation was that at that time, i was running several programs (apple safari, one of my media players, and digsby) and switching frequently… so i guess dat’s what made digsby crash… and i have another problem on my computer: it doesnt shut down!!! can that be a cause for digsby to crash? i guess i must mention that despite my comp nt shutting down, i do close digsby every two nights or so…
and as for that facebook connection proble…. the problem resolved on its own… ie unless you guys did something… !!

I’m still having CPU issues. On my Dual core, it uses about 10% of cpu, too much, but managable. On my Athlon 64 3000+ (single core), it uses up to 55% of CPU, which makes it unusable. I’m back to T******* for now. But I really want Digsby. It’s just not time yet…
Daniel Scrima Said,

I’m not sure if this has to do with the latest build, but it won’t connect to anything anymore. I even tried re-downloading the latest official release and installing, and no dice.
It flickers between Connecting and Authenticating about 5 times, then just stops.
Any thoughts?
Thanks to all of you and your hard work!!!

I work in a call center.
At first i couldn’t run digsby because I can’t access program Files. I had a portable version somebody made. There was an upgrade that broke it. Then I tried the normal version and whoa it works now w/o needing to access program files. Then you started this alpha business. Now when an update is pushed it is stored in temporary internet files (I am guessing) and it wants me to use Admin username and password to run the downloaded update. Whats better is you cant just find the update on the website. So now I am stuck using pidgin again. Please help. Either fix the update process, allow me to chose when to check for updates or have a place on your website to find the latest release. – thanks
Mike Said,
November 18, 2008 @ 12:42 pm
@Michael
Don’t install to program files. Try a folder your user account is the ‘owner’ of, for example your “Documents” or “Application Data” (or “AppData”) folder. Also, the latest installer is always located at http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe (for normal) and http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup_alpha.exe (for the alpha).
