Build 36 – Private Alpha Release
We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 36, r18814 r18818 r18822) which introduces many new bug fixes and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
- Added full support for new the Hotmail design that people are being switched over to including message actions
- Fixed a crash and added more debug info to crash reports to help us hunt down the remaining crashes
- Fixed several significant memory leaks
- Fixed a bug that caused two instances of Digsby to launch resulting in duplicate IM windows. If it still happens in this release please submit a bug report to let us know along with any info on how to reproduce it.
The new alpha release cycle has been very helpful – this build fixes several bugs introduced in the last release that never made it to the entire user base. If this alpha release does not introduce any new issues it will be pushed to all users next week.
If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, follow the instructions here:
http://blog.digsby.com/archives/57
Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then. We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.
As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.
Update 1 (11/6/2008 4:35pm): We just pushed a small update fixing an MSN bug that was introduced in this release.
Update 2 (11/6/2008 5:50pm): We just pushed another update fixing a bug with the Send File button and also a bug that caused AIM buddies to show an away time if they the server reported one.

Since getting the latest update Digsby has crashed twice…each time when I switch from showing offline contacts to not showing them. Not sure if the crash report was ever filed. Also, noticing that when I try and change the stealth settings from online to permanently offline it won’t make the change..it still stays at online

I had a crash while doing nothing on r18814. I filled out the bug report and clicked the “send” button, but honestly I have no idea if it sent or not. Something along the lines of how Microsoft does it would be nice – with the sending, sending, sent, or even just a “Crash report received!”
Even if you lie to us about it
it would make me at least think it’s sent, and I would feel better.

@Davu: That doesn’t sound like it is Digsby related but if it happens again let us know.

I’ve had 3 crashes tonight. I am pretty sure they are happening when I’m gChatting, but not 100% on that. It crashes before I can send a report and Vista 64 closes it before anything is sent to you guys.

I started noticing the order of contacts being arranged is not being remembered in this new release.
Everytime I run Digsby I have to reorder my contacts to my preference again.

@RazzBaronZ: We are pushing an update tomorrow that should fix the crash causing bug
@Cappella: No other reports like this – can you submit a bug report?

I am also an alpha tester. I didn’t face any problem so far. Sometime twitter gets disconnected. I am confused if it is a network problem or a bug.

Auto-hide when docking to the right side of the screen no longer works with this release. I tried un-checking and re-checking the option to do so to no avail. Restarting Digsby didn’t help, either.
By the way, no crashes since I last posted.
Steve Said,

@Coderbari: More often than not it is a network issue. After it disconnects you can use Help > Send Bug Report so we can take a look
@RazzBaronz: No other reports like this. Can you email bugs@digsby.com to let us know if the issue persists.

Would it be possible for there to be a check for updates box in Digsby, or for it to ping for new versions every couple of hours or so? I tend to just leave it running for a very long time on my computer and so even though I’m alpha tester, there are times when I miss entire builds since I did not know that there was a new update. I don’t mind restarting digsby to update, I just need to know when to do so, and it would make the most sense to me, based on other programs, for it to either pop up a message saying “hey, there’s a new version, restart if you’d like it” or at the very least let you check without restarting the whole program and interrupting conversations for no reason.

Fixed with a restart of my computer. Weird.

Guys.
If you want this product to be successful, popular, and fairly bug free, you should open this stuff up. Open Source it. This is the perfect opportunity for an open source project.
A lot of people are afraid of open source. They’re afraid that they’ll lose control of the project. They’re afraid that anyone will be able to change it at will and project will simply go to shit. That’s simply not true at all.
In an open source project, you have COMPLETE CONTROL over what’s added to the project. You’ll have developers submitting patches and updates, but you will be the ones in control of what actually gets added to the central code repository. Your goal for application design will not be compromised.
Why open source it?
1. Better product, more users!
2. Encourage collaboration rather than subversive competition. Will there still be competition? Yes. But it will be encouraging, constructive competition rather than “try to beat the other guy” competition.
Think about it.
Steve Said,

@Ccomics88: It is definitely something we are considering.
