Alpha Testers Needed!
We need your help! As Digsby continues to grow, more and more people depend on it for their communication needs. While we are still a beta product that is very young, our user base has expanded from the hardcore beta testers to average users who require stability.
As we mentioned in a previous blog post, we are making a change in our development process. We are looking for a select group of people to become “alpha testers”. These users will continue to receive 1-2 updates per week while the rest of the user base will receive updates after we confirm that a release is stable and ready to be pushed out to the masses. This will allow us to consistently release a stable product while maintaining our rapid development cycle.
In order to become an alpha tester, you’ll need to install the alpha version of Digsby. Once you’ve installed it, download this file and place it in the Digsby program folder (otherwise the program will update to the current “released” version). You can always delete the file or reinstall Digsby in order to leave the alpha tester group. Keep in mind that with great power comes great responsibility. We are looking for people who will be proactive in reporting any new bugs that we introduce so we can fix these issues before a release is pushed out to the entire user base. Just use “Help > Send Bug Report” right after an issue happens.
Today, we begin testing Build 35 (r18546) which introduces many critical bug fixes and improvements. We will keep a list if changes in the current alpha on our Change Log. Good luck in testing and thank you for your help!
As always, if you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.

I have a notebook, and a desktop I can test on. I’ll use this desktop to test the alpha on since its what I use the most. my notebook will be running the “released” version.
so far, the alpha looks good, no issues so far… what about adding myspace chat to IM accounts? has that been tested yet? I have a few users on myspace now. Also in facebook chat, it keeps wanting to put the new facebook chat users in the MSN group, instead of their own separate group, but I had that issue with past releases.
as far as the alpha goes, so far so good, what are we testing in this release specifically?

@ MasterEvilAce, Nathan Carey-
All Digsby installers do that. There should be a notice posted wherever you downloaded your modifications from; there’s also notes about that on the forums.
We’re slowly moving towards customizations being separate from the Digsby installation folder but it’s not quite there yet.

Is this alpha testing going to be similar to the previous round of updates that were only pushed to certain users?
I’m was fine with those updates but I don’t want to get into anything much more aggressive than that.
Ricky Said,
October 24, 2008 @ 12:37 pm
can’t just have a checkbox flag in regular Digsby to grab alpha updates? :\
Mike Said,
October 24, 2008 @ 12:39 pm
@loof, the goal is to get changes to users early and often. this way we can find problems faster (and therefore fix them faster). also, we’ll be able to avoid releasing changes that cause problems for a lot of people if we have a smaller group of users that let us know if we break something
@ricky, to be honest we didn’t want to make it *too* easy, since changing that checkbox could have pretty big ramifications for the usability of the program. Additionally, there’s no guarantee that Digsby is running under an Administrator account (and is therefore able to make changes to Program Files, which is where a majority of people install it to).

Ah, never mind. I guess you made us d/l the newest one, the second file is for future updates. Don’t mind me.
Thanks,
Kurt
Mike Said,
October 24, 2008 @ 1:12 pm
@Kurt-
The file goes in (for example) “C:\Program Files\Digsby”. In this case the file is actually to *prevent* an update- without it the program will “update” to version 18269, the current version released to everyone. However, this file will also make it so you’ll update when we do release updates to the “alpha” branch of the program.
You can be sure you have this alpha release if you go to Help -> About Digsby and see “Build 18546″.
edit: apparently you didn’t need my explanation ;-). oh well, I’ll leave it here for anyone else that might be curious.

First of all let me tell you what my system is running.I am running Windows Vista Business 32 bit with sp1.I have a 7800gs video card. All Windows updates are installed and up to date along with video card drivers from nvidia. Now,I was doing some looking around on the digsby forum and noticed a video about problems with digsby and the eplorer.exe using too much cpu.So i decided to open my task manager and sure enough my explorer.exe was using 10% of my cpu.The firest thing I did was exit digsby and the cpu usage went away.So i loaded digsby back up and i noticed that cpu usage went back up and I also noticed a new (never before seen bye me)issue. My video card fan speed is wunning faster when digsby is loaded even when digsby is minimized. However,If i look under mouse setting it appears that pointer shadows are not enabled. When I enable mouse pointer shadows my video card fan spins back down and my cpu usage goes down.So evedently this problem has not been fixed yet bye either microsoft or digsby. It seems to me that the reason for the cpu usage rising may be due to the video card being used more for some reason and causing the video card fan speed to rise.If I had to guess I would assume that for some reason when mouse pointer shadows is disabled digsby is using some sort of 3d rendering for an unknown reason causing cpu usage and video card fan speed to rise. This is just my opinion.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Carl

Hi, sorry for being totally off-topic but I was wondering about the “Gmail-notifier” built into Digsby.
The notifier is completely perfect in every way so that you can delete mails without even bothering to open the mail etc.
Is there any stad-alone version of it? All the other gmail-notifiers sucks, they only view that you have a new mail (I’ve tried googles own notifier, firefox-notifier and GAlert.
I want to use it on my notebook but I don’t really need the whole Digsby client for the small task =/
So would you have any recommendation for a good notifier? Otherwise you could/should make a standalone and at the same time the best Gmail notifier out there.
Thx for the most awesome IM out there, keep up the good work!

Yes, you just go to Program Files and then Digsby and place it in there, but make sure you do not sign into Digsby Alpha before you do so, otherwise it will update itself to the released version. If you find it is not the Alpha version, then once you have placed this file into the Digsby folder, just re-install the alpha version. You can check whether you have the right version by clicking on help and then about.
Steve Said,
October 27, 2008 @ 9:10 am
@Kaipa: There are instructions in the blog post above.
@hafe: Yes, you can block them in Preferences > Privacy and you can also set it to not allow messages from those not on your buddy list.
@Gobd: We are considering one tray icon for all your accounts but haven’t decided on the functionality yet.
@saragh: You can go to Preferences > Privacy and set it not to allow messages from those not on your buddy list.
@Sergey: Thank you. We will translate Digsby into other languages in the future and will certainly appreciate the help of our community.
@David: Just click the “X” on the buddy list and it will minimize to tray.

Hi guys, developers and people here. Well, first I want to thank you for this awesome program, I’m here to question about somethings, here we go:
Why Digsby takes so much disk space? I’m not a developer, but there isn’t any other language that is multi-plataform and lighter?
What you have today that you think that consumes much in disk space, and in memory while in use?
What language you use, or languages?
Do you think that integrating somethings in the visual aspect with the system it could have a lighter Digsby?
Well, I think that’s all for now. I had uninstall it because I was running it on a MacBook, using bootcamp for Windows XP SP3, with very LITTLE disk space.
Hope that you guys do your best, I know you are, and hope that with our help you can make it Digsby even better and multi-plataform as soon as possible.
Many thanks from Brazil here,

One at a time please. Digsby supports multiple protocols right now and it’s more important to fix the bugs in those first and then move on to new ones. Knowing IRC’s popularity I’m sure it will be added eventually but right now, bugs are the priority, not adding so many new features that the bugs just pile up into oblivion.

Just installed the new Alpha a couple days ago. No problems yet.
I think I requested this before, but I am going to state it again. When I get an email from someone @rit.edu sent to my Yahoo! mail, I have it forwarded to a separate folder called RIT. Digsby seems to only check my inbox for new mail. Because of this I still need to manually check my Yahoo! mail or I won’t be alerted of e-mails to that folder. It’s not a huge deal, but if it’s possible to also check your personal folders, it would be a huge help… at least for me.
Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

I’ve been using the alpha for a week now without any issues.
Curious about something (I couldn’t find in the forum) and I didn’t know if I should leave an alpha post there.
I’m getting my twitter updates, no problem and notifications (sound and popup). But I’m not getting my own tweet popup or sound. I can’t remember if this was the norm in the beta releases or not. Anyone know ?
It’s not a big deal, but I’ve been using twitterfeed for a few days with my blog and it’s just great but there is a bit of a lag, and I’d like to see them popup/notify without me checking.
