Build 34 - Stability is Key!
We just pushed an update (Build 34, r18219 r18250 r18269) which introduces support for the new Windows Live Mail that some of our users have already been switched over to along with a few critical bug fixes. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
- Added support for the new Windows Live Mail that some users have been switched over to
- Fixed a bug that caused social network accounts to disappear for a small portion of users
- Fixed a bug that caused MSN to disconnect and not know about it so the buddy list was still populated and it did not reconnect
- Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck on “Connecting…” for a small portion of users. If you are experiencing this you do need to reinstall using the latest installer on our website
As Digsby continues to grow, more and more people depend on our product for their communication needs. While we are still a beta product that is very young, our user base has expanded from the hardcore beta testers to average users who require stability.
With that in mind, we are going change our development process in the near future - most likely the next release we do. We are going ask people to sign up in order to become “alpha testers”. These users will continue to receive 1-2 updates per week while the rest of the userbase will receive updates after we confirm that a release is stable and ready to be pushed out to the masses. This will allow us to consistently release a stable product while maintaining our rapid development cycle.
As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.
Update (10/12/08 6:30pm): An update was pushed to fix a bug that was causing the buddy list not to appear. This is exactly why we are switching over to a two-tier release cycle. The bug was not detected here prior to release because it was an edge case that affected about 1% of users. However, that still adds up to a lot of unhappy people and we want to avoid this in the future. The new build number is 18250.
Update 2 (10/13/08 1:30pm): Another update was pushed fixing the buddy list issue for (hopefully) the rest of the people it affected. Also, we fixed a bug that caused new IM windows to take focus even if your preferences were set for that not to happen. Lastly, we fixed the most common cause of the remaining crashes we have been seeing! Keep submitting crash reports so we can see what is left and what is most common. At this point, Digsby is crashing for less than 0.5% of daily users so it is almost solid. The new build number is 18269.

Your change in the way you release versions might bring me back into the fold. I was using Digsby as part of my job (keeping in tough with coworkers via IM) and I encountered a few too many problems to keep using it.
Plus the Twitter interface was kind of irritating. Hard to beat Twhirl in that regards.
I love what Digsby can do though, so I’m gonna give it another go.

I keep getting notices from my client saying that “Digsby pushed a new version,” but I didn’t have a new version pushed onto me… my client still reports the same (build 33) version. Why doesn’t it just update itself without requiring input on my part? Also, I don’t see any way to download the latest (build 34) version. The Download button links me to a page with a download of build 33.
Keith Said,

Keep up the stellar work friends! I’ve been waiting for Trillian Astra to come out of alpha for over two years now, and I stopped waiting to get on the alpha test list last week and downloaded Digsby, and holy moley, I love it. It does everything Trillian did for me, but it never crashes, it connects to more networks, and the aesthetics are just what the doctor ordered. Bravo team Digsby, chalk up another devoted user!

I can’t say I fully agree with the testing change but I know I’m willing to use the “alpha” quality builds (as before) because I use Digsby in a virtual pc environment and I’m used to testing. XP, Longhorn, Vista, OneCare, etc.
Anyone who downloads should be understanding that this isn’t a “production quality version”, hence “BETA” status.
So I see that it says 1-2 builds a week but will the “alpha” testers get basically “nightly” builds, then on Friday (if it’s all good to go), all the “beta” people get the stable push?
Gervasio Said,
October 10, 2008 @ 6:25 pm
Hey guys!
I like Digsby each day more
The only thing that doesn’t let me switch 100%, is the option of doing chats with more than 1 person in AIM. So, I’m switching to Trillian each time I need a multiple way conversation. I hope you’ll add this to your to-do list
I really think you should, once it’s stable enough, have a free and a Pro version… b/c it would be sad to see this project die b/c of financing.
Just a thought, and keep on the good work!

This latest version causes my contacts/groups to be missing from the Buddy List window. People have IMed me, and I could communicate with them. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, making a new account, and I’ve also tried adding new groups and buddies. None of it displays in the Buddy List window.
I tried to revert to the previous build, but I can’t sign on without it automatically updating. There is no setting in Digsby to disable updates or opt out of an update. In this current state, this renders Digsby unusable outside of reverting to a build prior to the updater. I tried removing the updater scripts from the program folder, but this only causes Digsby to lock on the forced update attempt. I love staying current and on the bleeding edge, but it should be possible to use a previous build if the new build has a show stopping bug.

I like your new release plans. But I don’t really mind getting bugs because I want to help Digsby’s development. Besides, it’s been a long time since Digsby crashed on my Vista laptop.
One thing that I’d really like for Digsby to have though (maybe sometime in the future) is the ability to assign different status to each IM account. That’s one thing I miss since moving from Pidgin. Other than that, excellent job! I’m one of your many users who you hardly hear from, mainly because we’ve got nothing to complain really.

Where is the love for linux?
I mean c’mon, do the open source fans a favor and port this wonderful utility to the native language already. I know that linux isn’t nearly as common as windows but there are no well rounded options atm and it sucks!
Pidgin is a buggy pos and kopete is fundamentally sound but lacking of the razzle dazzle in Digsby. I would test and submit error reports all day long to do what I could for a native linux version. Is there at least a rough ETA?

@Aithne: I looked through and couldn’t find any posts that seemed rude. Some people have participated in so many betas and software forums that they don’t want to have to bow politely and praise to project before contributing bug reports. Detailed timely submissions by former software developers should be praise enough alone.

I love to participate as an Alpha tester. Digsby rarely crushed in my computer even when it’s in the rapid development cycle.
I hope Digsby will do Japanese users some favors by adding support for mixi SNS and Yahoo! Japan mail.
And I think I noticed a bug…
In Status Options - Let others know that I am idle after … minutes of inactivity. I put in 0 so that I will always be idle, and in my Digsby the status is shown as idle. However, other people still see me as available/busy (according to which I set at the time) not idle as it should be. I am using Google Talk.

Good news. My buddy list window contents have returned through no efforts of my own. This is an interesting bug to look into, Digsby devs, because whatever it was, Meebo suffered from it as well. I use Yahoo and AIM, and it impacted both on both Digsby and Meebo. The native clients were immune to the bug.

Digsby is a very awesome program, even though it’s beta, it’s very stable for a beta product. I love how I can connect to each one of my IM accounts and chat with friends from every one in one single program. It would be nice to allow actual text editing like bolding or italicizing specific words in a future build. I will continue using Digsby and be a very loyal Digsby user.

I have loved what ya’ll have done with this program so far. I use to use Trillian and it just started causing me problems with my other messengers, like deling ones even though i didnt remove them or something to that effect.
I would still like to request a hiding feature, if not for digsby , at least for yahoo itself, because sometimes i dont feel like having to talk to everyone when i sign-on to yahoo and see bout 6 convos pop up and say hi and stuff and have to go through within 30 mins of catching up on life with each one of them.
so if you could plz work on a hiding feature to allow only certain users to see u online all the time and who u want to show u as offline all the time?
and i see that u have fiuxed the copy/paste issue of pasting 10 or so lines of a message to another person thanks.

Love the product. It’s Beta and I get that. I still think it’s about as stable much of the time as any “release” or “production” product dealing with the same touchy, even flaky, service foci.
Your release cycles are great. Your production is solid. You can’t and won’t make all people happy. Man, if you can stomach using Twitter with its myriad of downtime issues, Digsby is as solid as a rock in comparison.
Good work, and the idea of splitting the development cycles is a good idea. Although, I’d call it Beta/Current and Production. Alpha sounds flaky. You’d get more takers if you just graduated a final release of Digsby and called the latest version the “Beta” or better: Current.

Is there an option to just be notified of updates available for download rather than automatically updating? My work computer’s permissions are set strangely - I can install digsby no problem, but when it runs the auto-updater, I am told I don’t have the proper privileges.
I’ve gotten in the habit of remembering when my home pc gets a digsby update so I can just go to digsby.com to download the latest version. This morning, however, the download was NOT the latest version and it did the automatic update thing when I tried to run it - which means, of course, that I can’t use Digsby today. I will try the download later.
Thanks
Naren Said,

It seems from the overwhelming response here that you may be better off doing the opposite of what you proposed. Instead of creating an opt-in alpha list, why not keep the automatic updates be the default, but provide a way for people to opt-out of the updates. You could probably label stable versions as beta’s or releases and the people who opted out of automatic updates can sync with these exports…

Love the program, just have the following issues:
- Cant make a “New IM” window anymore (ever since the last update)
- When I set my status as “Away” and include a message, my message seems to disappear after a bit, has been happening for a long time.
Thanks.

@All: Pushing another update now with fixes for the rest of you have have the buddy list issue. It seems that some IM client is storing buddy list information in a way that is different than the AIM client.

I love Digsby. It is one of my must-have apps. With Digsby, I need to keep at least 4 other apps open.
I’d have to say +1 to Skype support.
Also want to say Digsby has been stable for me for several months. I must not be an edge-case user.

I’m on the new MSN mail and while I can see my inbox email now, the “From” field that is displayed is “None”.
Awesome program, thanks for your great work. It just keeps getting better and better!

@Derek: We are still working on finishing up support. The “None” for sender will be fixed shortly.

Just wanted to point out that the update dates are incorrect:
“Update (8/12/08 6:30pm):”
..and..
“Update 2 (8/13/08 1:30pm):”
..should be..
“Update (10/12/08 6:30pm):”
..and..
“Update 2 (10/13/08 1:30pm):”
Also, now that Digsby is so close to being solid…when can we expect Linux builds? I’m sure the Mac users are just as anxious.
I’ll be sending in plenty of bug reports along with John ^^ so the linux version can be rock solid asap as well. I really hope that for Linux you decide to go with Debs and RPMs and packages like that rather than bin installers.

Yeah! The latest update finally fixed the buddy list issue for me - thanks for being so on the ball guys! I have to admit, I never even reported the issue just because I had full confidence that you were already working urgently on it and would have it fixed as soon as possible - and here I am with the latest update pushed out and it works again. Confidence fully justified. Job well done, guys!

@kyleabaker: Thanks, it’s fixed. We are almost solid on crashes but want to get file transfers more stable and fix a few unicode related issues before we move on to other platforms.

@steve, thanks for replying my emails regarding my Digsby issues since I updated from the Sept 2008 digsby updates, it would be nice if digsby will have a psychic mode like on Pidgin or provide a digsby ‘API’ for other developers-alike can integrate existing plugin(s) and make it work.

Actually, it seems to be working fine after a quick restart, go figure. Honestly, I still use WLM, though the beta version, but Digsby honestly is great for Facebook and lets me use AIM with ease, definitely a great product!

hi, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask but….
I would to like to be able to very visibly identify [in the buddy list] if I have blocked one of my buddies. Is there a way to do this now and if not, will you please create such a way?
Steve Said,
October 14, 2008 @ 10:09 am
@Daniel: Use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log.
@Chris: The restart triggered an auto-update, which pushed the fix to you.
@robbo: Not right now but we will make it more obvious in the buddy list. For now Preferences > Privacy.

There was so many requests for support gg and skype protocols left with no comment on this blog.
Could you please say a word if you are planning to add this feature in near future? Or maybe just give us all - who are waiting to see new protocols like gg, skype, irc… supported by Digsby - a clue when are you planning to start working on this kind of stuff.
Regards,
Mike
P.S. Sorry for that off-topic comment but see now response neither on forum nor on mail

Cannot connect to AIM since the last update.
98% of my contacts are on AIM, so if this problem persists, there’s no reason to continue using Digsby. AIM connects fine when I use their software.

in regard to above, my only beef with new updates is all my customized theme files are overwritten, custom installation is preferred and a crucial feature. think macupdate, or even windows update.

i still could not found feature: BUZZ (in YM) or Nudge (in WinLive) in Digsby. Why you don’t add this feature ???
Is there anything I can do to stop the automatic upgrade download while I try to login? I do not wish this automatic download. I prefer to download via http://www.digsby.com by myself, but digsby forced me to turn on the automatic download precccess. Please add this option to your user, if we want to turn on either turn off the automatic download.

It’d be nice if group chats/multichats could be supported for aim.
Also, the now playing feature should be able to support WMP 11 or Last LM…
Besides that, its shaping up to be a great program.

Seems like stuff is shaping up well. Just wondering when the next update will be. Seems like they were happening pretty fast and then now there’s nothing. So possibly you could add me to the testers because i use it all the time and i would work well with testing bugs. Usually use it for 6+ hours a day.

I’d like to sign up as an alpha tester. I like seeing all the new features that are pushed out. I run digsby on my laptop, and desktop, and its nice to see digsby is still running smooth on my Vista laptop with only 1.37 GB of RAM, since i can’t upgrade the RAM on my laptop any more then is in there now.
So far, I’m satisfied with what digsby has now. besides a portable version I would use that alot for school, otherwise the feature set is fine how it is now. My brother inlaw and sister would like to see a Mac version, but I don’t care about that myself.
oh, and webcam support, not necessarily 2 way webcam but at least the ability to send recieve webcam transmissions over yahoo and MSN, since 2 way webcam would be heavy broadband intensive on both ends to be decently functional anyway, otherwise digsby seems rock solid to me.

It would be awesome if there was a digsby application for the iPhone and iPod touch. I would use it all the time! and i just noticed this as I was typing, its kinda funny that your comment box doesnt recognize digsby as word. =]
