Build 33 - The Need for Speed

We’re back to a rapid release cycle and excited to have a new build ready for you all. We just pushed an update (Build 33, r18139 r18152) which is focused on performance, general bug fixes, and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • There are numerous performance optimizations throughout the program, lowering CPU usage and improving responsiveness.  We will continue to focus on this over the next few weeks
  • Fixed three crash causing bugs thanks to the new crash reporter.  Keep the crash reports coming so we can fix any that remain
  • Possible fix for 2 bugs that caused the CPU to spin to 100% and stay there
  • Attempted to fix a bug that caused some Hotmail to fail at login. We can’t reproduce this with any of our test accounts so please let us know if it didn’t work
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck at “Checking for Updates…” if your proxy returned bad data instead of a file manifest
  • Fixed a bug that caused some incoming IM’s to not show for Yahoo accounts

Our focus right now is on fixing a few remaining critical bugs and crashes.  We will take some time in the near future to make file transfers solid, fix remaining ICQ unicode issues, add group chat support, and enhance our microblogging support.

As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log.

Update (10/7/08 11:00pm): We just pushed a small fix for two more crash causing bugs taking us from r18139 to r18148.

Update (10/8/08 10:55am): We just pushed a small fix for another crash causing bugs taking us from r18148 to r18152.

    Sweet, updating nicely.

  2. bob Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:02 pm

Excellent. So amazing to hear that submitting info for the crashes was actually helpful.
Only been using Digsby for a few weeks, but it’s been pretty handy so far.

Downloaded digsby for the first time about 20 minutes before you guys released the update, haha.

  4. cmu Said,

I continue to get “Some of the messages you sent may not have been received.” notice whenever I send anyone an offline message. I also haven’t been recieving offline IMs as reliably. I don’t know if it’s a problem on my end or not though.

  5. Mofoo Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:10 pm

    I love you!

  6. marshall Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:18 pm

    Digsby’s the best thing.

  7. Arshad Y. Khan Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:19 pm

No issues so far with version 18139. Good job!

  8. Steve Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:21 pm

@cmu - sending you an email to see if we can figure out what is going wrong. This build does fix offline IM bugs so it should work fine now.

  9. Keith Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:24 pm

The CPU change is much appreciated. It seems a lot faster too.

  10. Julisen Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:33 pm

You guys are great at getting updates done efficiently. Thanks for your hard work. :) A suggestion for next time…make the smiley’s optional. Otherwise, thanks!

  11. Aaron Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:35 pm

Working great this time. However, in the Facebook window, it’d be nice to see how my friends updated, instead of just THAT they updated their profiles. Right now it says, “So-and-so updated their profile,” as opposed to, “So-and-so commented on their own photo.” Thumbnail support for uploaded photos would also be great, but I’m sure that will come in time. Great work so far, guys!

  12. Steve Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

@Julisen: That preference was added in the last release. Disable Preferences > Conversations > Show emoticons in conversations

@Aaron: We do what we can with the Facebook API. If they add functionality that allows us to get more detailed information we will certainly use it.

  13. R Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:41 pm

Can you let us decide if we want to check Digsby for update at startup instead of setting it as default and making us feel uncomfortably stuck while it does so?
    Thanks and appreciated.

  14. Albert C Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:45 pm

Still no luck with the Hotmail… Sticks in “authenticating”.

  15. Julia Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:51 pm

Even though Digsby has bugs it’s still my most favorite client<3

The only bug i ever noticed was the issue with the file transfers.

  16. cs Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:54 pm

The new version looks great. Loads quickly and runs well on this slow old laptop I’m using right now. I’ll have to update it on my other computers later. No complaints about Digsby for me aside from the inability to bold, italicize or underline a selected word in a message.

  17. Jeff Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 8:59 pm

When ever you go to change fonts, ir freezes up the window and u cant click on anything for 9 seconds.

    (Win vista 64bit)

  18. Dai Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 9:09 pm

great update, guys. i’m still amazed at how much the last few updates improved ram usage…it’s like it’s not even running anymore. i do agree with cs though. the inability to bold, italicize, underline, or change a certain word’s color or size without affecting the entire passage is kind of a hassle.

  19. Steve Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 9:13 pm

@Albert: submit a bug report using Help > Send Bug Report. It only affects a tiny portion of Hotmail users and we have not been able to reproduce it here so the logs will help.

@Jeff: This happens with very long lists of fonts and only the first time. We need to pre-load these.

  20. Robert Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 10:00 pm

Clicking on a link brought up IE, instead of FF, my default browser. Has it always been that way … I noticed this when I clicked on the link in the announcement window for this build. Thx.

  21. Steve Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 10:04 pm

@Robert: Firefox isn’t set as your default browser. Go into IE and set it as your default then go into FF and set it as your default. Links will then open in FF.

  22. SAMue1 Said,

    Thanks guys!!

  23. Zyph Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:09 pm

Hotmail stuck at authenticating as well, sending a bug report as well.

  24. Matt Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:18 pm

    Still no WMP Support? *sigh*

  25. Chris Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:19 pm

I have issues with digsby causing some games to stutter. Alt+tabbing out of the game and closing digsby fixes the stutter.

  26. Babu Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

Using only from the last few days. Great! Keep it up

  27. Jim Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

Hey really like the program. Like the way the logging system is organized, but it seems that you are not able to copy and paste from the log viewer. That and you are only able to log all conversations, an option to only log certain people would be cool.

  28. Steve Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:22 pm

@Chris: That is one of the reasons why we are working on optimizing performance. This build should be less CPU intensive and they will keep getting better.

@Jim: Our log viewer can use a lot of work and we have some great ideas on making it much much better in the future.

@Zyph: Thanks, we will take a look at them in the morning.

  29. Steven G Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:29 pm

    you guys never disappoint

    Thanks guys!!

  31. Mister Me Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:42 pm

Long Live Digsby. I’m a loyal user who at this point sees absolutely no reason what so ever to venture out for another client or alternative to an original client. Thank you for your dedication and hard work, it is well appreciated I assure.

  32. Gray W Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:43 pm

Ah Digsby what a Joy you are ! thanks guys

  33. Jim Said,

    October 7, 2008 @ 11:45 pm

Yeah thanks for the fast response. This program makes things easy and keeps things all together and organized. Which is nice. So keep up the good work on the program and clean some stuff up so we can get a native linux version going. That would be nice.

  34. Angela Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:01 am

More recently the past 4 days, however. Okay.. that’s enough comments, ha.

  35. medj Said,

Ever since build 32, I have noticed a huge upgrade in performance. When I open digsby, it opens almost instantaneously. It then logs in very quickly as well. Thanks a lot for these updates!

  36. Mike Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:11 am

is it always checking updates everytime i login??
i already updates to the newest… then when i start the comp… it checks again n download again….
quite hassle if this happen everytime

  37. eric Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:11 am

Hi, Love Digsby! My only complaint so far is the logging. I need to be able to search through all my conversations throughout history, not just one person on one day. Hope to see better search capability soon. Keep up the great work!

  38. Sankar Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:15 am

i feel happy to get an update so soon after reporting.
    nice work..
    keep going.

  41. Graeme Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:48 am

I did a download upgrade with the big build (to 17926) becuase the auto-update wasn’t working, and I assumed it was due to the ‘major’-ness of the update. However, these updates aren’t working either. It downloads the files, but doesn’t apply them. Suggestions?

  42. Macampos Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:57 am

    Thanks! All power to Digsby!

  43. ÅB Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 1:25 am

I get “Some of the messages you sent may not have been received” quite often, at least 4-5 times during one chat session. I have to admit it’s quite annoying, but for what it’s worth - that’s pretty much the only negative feedback I have.

  44. Gabrie Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 2:07 am

    Hi
More of a feature request then a bug, but for the colorblind people it would be great if the status icon not only changes color, but shape to. I have a hard time seeing who is online, busy or away.

    Gabrie

  45. Jonas Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 3:10 am

Will there be support for Jaiku in the future?

I like my Digsby portable. I installed it, copied it to my external drive and it’s been working great, since this last update.
It updated as usual, but now it’s not starting… exits after checking for updates…
    Why? Oh, why? :((

Thank you a lot guys for this new build.

One question though: When will you fix the Unicode problems with some special characters like ä, ö, ü?

Sorry for bothering you again with this issue, but since this hasn’t been addressed yet, I thought I ask again for it.

  59. Gyg Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 7:09 am

I know that the scrolling through conversations nearly doubled in speed last build, is there any kind of time table for when we can expect it to actually scroll smoothly like virtually any other program?

Glad to see pushes going faster again,

  60. Najeeb Puthiyallam Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 7:55 am

Digsby Saves my time. Its very handy speedy and ofcourse friendly too.. Cool.. The new face of messaging.. u did a gr8 job guyz…

    nice one dude..

  63. Gregor Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 8:56 am

The “don’t show main window upon starting Digsby” feature is still not implemented. i would really really love to see that built in, since it got kinda annoying, when starting up the system, all other programs stay in tray, just Digsby pops up!

other than that… keep up the good work!

  64. Steve Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 8:58 am

@Gabrie - We will release more skins in the future as well as official documentation on how to make new ones. I’m sure many of the ones our users create will have various shapes for status icons. You can sort and group by status in the meantime to split them apart.

@iulian - We will release an official portable version in the future. Updating to a USB drive may be flaky now

@Andrew - Appearing offline to some people is only a feature of the Yahoo protocol and we do have it (right click on them).

@Operator - Remaining unicode issues will be fixed shortly

@Gyg - It should scroll at normal speed now for most conversation themes on most PCs. GoneDark is the only one that might be a little jumpy and others if you have a very old computer.

@Tech Blog - Yes, it will update on login

  65. Hector Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 8:58 am

When can we expect Sametime support? I really am surprised that development time is being spent on a dead protocol (ICQ…are we in 1997 again?) and a major protocol used in many, many corporate environments (Sametime) is being ignored.

    Please consider shifting priorities. Thanks!

  66. M Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 9:02 am

You guys are doing a great job, and every release gets better and better.

Are there any plans to support Skype at some point?

  67. Steve Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 9:10 am

@All - We will be adding more protocols in the future. Please email suggestions to features@digsby.com so we can keep track of the level of requests for each one and prioritize :)

Is there anyone else experiencing issues with file transfer on MSN? When someone send me a file I don’t see any alert popup or anything… and it’s selected in the preferences panel.

  74. Tim Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 11:16 am

    Hey Digsby guys,

I’m a longtime user of Digsby, and a question was raised yesterday that I didn’t have the answer to: does Digsby, through its Listening to Music status feature, support the new Zune 3.0 software? If not, what programs are supported and will this be supported in the future?

  75. Julian Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 11:25 am

PLEASE fix the italic/bold bug ASAP. It’s reaching the point where I might switch back to Trillian, even though Digsby has more features, just because of this formatting issue.

  76. Rick Ford Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 11:37 am

After I close Digsby, it stays in memory as digsby-app.exe and I continue to get Yahoo Mail alerts.

Other than that, Digsby is fantastic. I’ve got all my friends using it!

  77. Matt Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 11:39 am

Can we please, please fix the Trillian URL bug now? I hate having to copy and paste every link that someone sends me!

Thanks for the performance improvements. I took a few months hiatus off Digsby while it was being piggy, and came back for the last 2 builds. I’m very happy I did.

  81. Serious Sam Said,

If it is possible, consider adding draaugiem.lv to Social Networks. Draugiem.lv is the #1 Latvian social network, but also has influence in Lithuania, Russia, Hungary, and Germany.

  82. Steve Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

@Laurent - we have a few known issues with file transfers and will tackle these shortly. In the blog post we mention that as one of our priorities

@Tim - we will support more music applications in the future

@Julian - we will add per-character formatting in the near future

@Matt - we were hoping they would fix it :) We have a ticket for this and will try to knock it out soon

  83. Akin Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 1:12 pm

    Thanks for the awesome work.

I would really like an option to remove the link that sometimes gets displayed in my ‘Listening To’ status.

After that gets added, digsby is perfect in my book.

  84. Fedderiko Said,

Digsby Rock! the only thing that is miss is the possibility to have a display picture for every IM account that will be amazing!!!

  85. Murray Said,

Good to see these bugs are being fixed now. Also looking forward to seeing file transfers become solid. Having a few problems sending files to people on windows live messenger.

  86. Jason M Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 3:27 pm

Wow, that push update worked nicely, very cool!

Word of caution though, make sure the installs don’t take longer than a minute on an average computer. Anything longer and I think you’ll start annoying people.

  87. Sagi Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 3:28 pm

No one seems to be getting my IMs. I can read there’s but they can’t see what I type.

  88. Chris Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 3:54 pm

When I send messages, they don’t show up in the conversation window. The other user receives the message, but when they reply, that doesn’t show up in my conversation window either. I can see that they are typing and everything, just no message shows up. I tried downloading and reinstalling, but still no luck. Any ideas?

  89. Murky Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 3:57 pm

Thanks for the update. It was a nice fast download, and updated very smoothly. Well done. So far, I don’t seem to be having the random ICQ snac error either. I was wondering if there was a way to have the buddy list minimised (just tray icon) at startup. I tried the docking option, but it leaves a bright white line at the right side when docked, and can be jerky when I’m running my hundered other tasks, hehe! would it be possible to have an auto- hide delay like ICQ used to? I still love typing directly into the little slide away message alert window. Pure genius!

  90. delm Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 4:11 pm

With r18152 I’m sensing that UI has gotten slower. The message scrolling on IM window, when recieving or sending a message, is slow as lava, but with r18139 was fine.

  91. Shelly Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 6:11 pm

Group chat would be AWESOME, I’m really going to need it for November and NaNoWriMo. I downloaded AIM again just for that, but if it gets added before Nov then I won’t have to use two programs! (hin hint)

  92. Shelly Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 6:13 pm

Sorry, another question - did this update get put on automatically?

  93. Howie Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 6:22 pm

Thanks for finally taking a look at performance. I don’t notice any decrease in cpu usage (I go between 0 and 50% quite a lot) so I look forward to when it finally moderates so I can finally ditch Trillian completely.

  94. John Sullivan Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 6:31 pm

Every time Digsby tries to update, the Pre-Updater crashes and I cannot start Digsby until I upgrade and reinstall manually. This is a tad annoying, especially when you issue three updates in less than 24 hours. Is there any way to turn off automatic update. Failing that, can anyone tell me why the Pre-Update is always crashing on me?

  95. Bert Said,

    October 8, 2008 @ 7:04 pm

I’ve uninstalled Trillian (Pro) now in favour of Digsby. I like it a lot and the community is good too! I’ve voted on the wishlist for this, but wondered when we’re likely to see it: “Option to start Digsby minimised!!!” Come on, pretty please, it’s only a few lines of code :¬)

    Thanks once again!

I recently grabbed a new set of smileys from the community site. The recent app updates overwrote the emoticons.txt file so the mapping of emoticons was blown away. :(

Now I have to reload the smileys.

@Bert: I am also looking for the option to start Digsby minimized.

Another thing I was hoping for is to be able to put a delay on when Digsby first connects. When Digsby loads with my computer, I always get an error message saying digsby can’t connect because my wireless connection hasn’t connected to my home network just yet. It usually connects about 5 seconds later but it would be nice to be able to put a 30 second delay on when it first tries to connect to avoid error messages.

    Hi Steve,
Another feature I would like to suggest is that you should be able to get the status of anyone you are talking by looking at the tab. Right now it just updates in the chat window that so and so has signed off. Perhaps a color change to black and white to indicate that the person is offline.

Will Digsby able to do file transfer with Google Talk soon?

  104. Steve Said,

    October 9, 2008 @ 8:32 am

@Rachel: Yes, we will add support for this in the future.

@Mike: In Preferences > Accounts you can remove social networks from the tray. Can you use Help > Send Bug Report to let us know what feels slower.

@Scott: Auto-update synchronizes the whole program folder. Nothing should be placed there. We will officially support adding skins, conversation themes, and smiley sets in the future but right now that code is still changing.

@chickencow + Shelly: It will update automatically.

    Hi Steve,

Wow at last my HOTMAIL account is working again. I don’t know what happened but it stop working sometime back but now it backs since the last update.. gr8 work guys :)

Anyway please I have a “small” request.. The “Invisible” function in Digsby is not working correctly for google accounts! If you use this function in DIGSBY and log into GMAIL chat, it says:

    ===============
Oops! You are not invisible because you’re logged into Google Talk from another client, device or location that doesn’t support invisibility.
    ===============

    PLEASE, PLEASE FIX THIS…

This is defo a prob as I tested this on a test account which did were I was able to see my real account online eventhough I was logged in as Invisible in DIGSBY.

Digsby is extra awesome, could you include an update button in Digsby? then instead of always downloading an full intaller Digsby could just path/reinstall itself?

@akigawa: On the to do list :)

@BC: Digsby only downloads the files that have changed. We may make it optional after we leave beta.

@Andy: Emailing you to see what went wrong.

@Frederick: We would love to. Unfortunately, Google only added invisible to Gmail Chat. As soon as it is added to the Google Talk client we will be able to do it as well. Right now it is not part of their Jabber implementation - only the web one.

loving the new builds, but one thing i dislike is the new default window size, any chance of increasing it or adding an option to create your own default size?

the original default chat window size was quite ideal IMO

Steve (and the rest of the Digsby team),

I have been using Digsby since the Build 32 release was published, and I am absolutely loving it. So much nicer to use than Trillian and it’s great to see that you’re actively developing it. Not to trash Trillian, but it’s been 3 years since their last major release, and their Astra client is still in Alpha stages.

What I find best of all, is that the community here is not only active, but I see all the developers taking the time to actually respond to the posts here while still getting work done. It’s impressive.

    I can’t wait to see what’s next! :)

While I’m excited to see that group chat is making its way to a release, my recent experience with the program has been that no matter what protocol I use, there is a severe lag in receiving and sending messages, up to 30 minutes at times. Unfortunately I have to resort to using Pidgin for now since I rely on IM communication for work.

I do love Digsby though and I miss its features already. I’ll check back in when you guys release the version with group chat and see how it fares. Keep up the good work.

Digsby is the best thing to happen to me since internet. It helps me organize my self as far as the internet is concerned. See my mails as soon as the arrive and chat with all my contacts same time on different IDs.
Thanks a million Digsby team. You are the Best!

  125. Steve Said,

    October 10, 2008 @ 8:10 am

    @Kaipa: Preferences > General & Profile

@Tim: Go to Preferences > Status and uncheck the full screen options. It sounds like we are misdetecting something as a full screen application. This feature will be changed soon from automatic detection to manually setting the client to “Gamer Mode”

@Brandito: It should remember the last user set window size and position on screen. If it does not, use Help > Send Bug Report.

I keep randomly losing access to the mouse-over menus for the FB and MS system tray icons in Digsby. I don’t really run anything major on my computer; just Digsby, Firefox and Winamp along with some MS Office programs.

Most times, I can run my mouse over the icons and the menus will pop up (same t hing for the profile boxes on my buddy list), but every so often I loose the ability to do that. I can still double click the icons to bring up the webpages, but I can’t just see the current history as a pop-up. The only way to fix it is to close out Digsby and then restart it.

Any ideas?? I’m running 32bit Vista on a brand new Dell Inspiron, so I’m doubting it’s my hardware.

*Also, it’s been doing this for a while now, before the big release of the season. It’s not a HUGE deal, as there’s no way I’m switching back to multiple apps, but I’d love to have it fixed. Thanks!

this is true, but i have to resize every im window manually, it’s just nice to have them all automatically resized to the same size, it’s a small thing i know, but for us slightly OCD folks it sure makes a difference :D

    Hi again Steve,

You right the Invisible function is in Google Chat (webmail) and not in Google Talk (client)..

However the Invisible function is availible in Google Talk (client) Labs Edition:

    http://www.google.com/talk/labsedition/

If you install this client you will see what I mean. Would this be of any help?
