Testers Needed for New Release!
Note: This is a test build with bugs and it may crash. The release will be pushed to everyone once we iron out the kinks.
The new build is almost ready for release and we need your help testing it before it is pushed out to everyone. We are very eager to get it out the door since it includes some highly anticipated improvements:
- RAM Optimization: Many people have reported that Digsby is taking 70MB - 110MB during normal use. If you leave Digsby running for a while, the memory leaks caused RAM usage to climb to 150MB+ on some systems. We completely reworked the architecture to use less memory and also improved the memory management by releasing objects when they are no longer needed. We also hunted down and eliminated numerous memory leaks. All in all, these changes lower Digsby’s RAM usage by over 50%. It should now hover in the 20MB - 50MB range depending on how many accounts you have and what you are doing at the moment. There is still more we can do and our goal is to get RAM utilization down even further!
- Performance: The changes in architecture improved the performance of simple user interface elements like buttons and menus; they now draw 2x - 3x faster! Digsby should be much more responsive now than ever before. However, while this build focused on RAM optimization, the next 1-2 builds will have a strong focus on improving “perceived performance” even more, including things like GUI response time, CPU utilization, etc.
- Firewalls and Proxy Servers: Every IM protocol now automatically tries to connect using several different ports to improve the odds of getting through restrictive firewalls and proxy servers. MSN Protocol also falls back to an HTTP-based method of connecting, which makes the traffic look like web page requests. Those who have not been able to use MSN or other IM protocols due to firewall/proxy restrictions should now be able to connect without any issues.
- Crash Reporter: We still have a few bugs that cause Digsby to crash. These have been hard to hunt down because they are rare, random, and hard to reproduce. The new release includes a crash reporter that will ask you whether you want to send a crash log to us if Digsby should crash. This will greatly help us in hunting down and fixing the remaining issues that are causing crashes. The major changes in architecture in this build may introduce a couple of new crash causing bugs and that is one of the reasons why we want to test the build before releasing it to everyone.
- Bug Fixes + Enhancements: Over the past two months we have added a large number of bug fixes and enhancements. There are too many to list here but we will include a full Change Log when the release is pushed to everyone.
Unlike previous releases, which were pushed on a weekly basis, this one includes over two months of new code so we want make sure we didn’t introduce any new bugs. If you run into any serious problems testing the new build, you can revert back to the current release by downloading the installer from our website. No matter what happens, none of your preferences or account information will be lost. There are instructions for getting the test release on our forum:
http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=2116
Update 1 (8/10/08, 2:30pm): Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and the bug reports. We will knock out the issues as quickly as possible to get this ready for release. Also, thank you for the crash reports. The new architecture did introduce a few crash causing issues and the crash logs will help us hunt these down ASAP. Keep on eye on this blog for updates. We will most likely push an update with fixes to those testing this new release sometime tomorrow.
Update 2 (8/11/08, 8:00pm): We just pushed an update (r16760) to all that are testing. We are really close to fixing the issue that is causing most of the crashes but it didn’t make it into today’s update. The air conditioning in the office broke and we are up to 89 degrees so we’re going to call it a night but we will hit the ground running tomorrow (A/C will be fixed at 7am) and are pretty sure the crash will be fixed by end of day. The following bugs fixed in this release are:
- Fixed a bug that prevented buddies from being added because list of accounts didn’t update
- Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck in “Checking for Updates” for some users with proxy servers
- Fixed a memory leak in Facebook Chat that caused RAM to skyrocket when the connection was lost
- Fixed a bug that caused some Hotmail accounts to get stuck in “Connecting…”
- Fixed a memory leak when closing an IM window with multiple tabs
Update 3 (8/12/08, 8:00pm): We just pushed an update (r16808) to all that are testing. Fixes include:
- Fixed a bug that was causing *most* of the crashes we have seen so far. There might be a couple more crash causing issues which we are hunting down now.
- Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck in “Digsby needs to restart…” after an auto-update for those who never installed Digsby prior to this test build
- Installer no longer includes the Microsoft VC++ Redistributable (so no more temp files in C:\)
- Fixed a bug that prevented you from deleting Jabber accounts
- Fixed another bug that caused Hotmail accounts to get stuck in “Connecting…”
- Fixed a bug that caused conversation log searching to break
- Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to not exit if you had an IM window with multiple tabs open
- Fixed a GDI object leak in popups
- Shaved a few megs off the installer size
Update 4 (8/15/08, 2:30pm): We just pushed an update (r16927) to all that are testing. Fixes include:

28MB of RAM usage is a SWEET decrease from the 50-60some that I was getting before. W00t, thanks for finally satisfying our cravings for the new build!
Tim Said,

Correction: 28MB was just at the start, when it was connecting and doing all that work. Now it’s at 18MB

I’m very impressed with the improvements in this build! It installed perfectly fine for me and everything connected as expected.
Memory dropped from start-up of ~70mb to ~30mb now and unlike before it holds a pretty constant footprint.
Thanks!

I found a pretty major bug with this new build. Sure, the memory improvement is great, but the new build has problems with cell phones. Using AIM, I can’t send messages to my cell phone or any of my friend’s cell phones. Digsby will think the message went through, but none of the cell phones receive it. As expected, Digsby does not receive any messages sent from the cell phones. I’m not talking about messages sent to somebody logged on AIM from their cell phone but SMS by messaging +15555555555. I’m fairly sure this is a fault of the new build because I tried it with the real AIM client and the old Digsby build (15142) and both work perfectly. I’ve submitted a bug report.
medj Said,
August 9, 2008 @ 2:09 am
I’m at about 32mb in RAM which is a big improvement.
I submitted a bug report because I was unable to Add a Contact. The “Add” button won’t become available to click. Anyone else have this problem?
The question I wonder though, will it ever be possible to be able to video/audio chat with people through Digsby the same way as MSN. I just tested it with someone, and they seem to get a link that you come to a page here on this domain where you video chat through the browser. Will future releases ever put the webcam window right in the convo window kinda like MSN?
Overall, everything seems more faster though. I like it!

As a follow up: went from using about 70 K before, to now from between 19 K to 30 K. When completely minimized and just running the program with no conversations or anything active it only uses about 14 K which is also awesome.
thanks again!

Karim Fatehi Said,

and hey, on vista x64, it still keeps above 80Mb and just starts lagging horribly at times.. im beginning to think its something that digsby doesnt like abt vista x64.. but then that needs to be fixed, because it is a popular OS.
Steve Said,
August 9, 2008 @ 8:57 am
@David: We’ll take a look at the bug report.
@medj: Did you choose a group to add them to? As for Audio/Video, we will add native support but in the more distant future. Implementing each protocol’s A/V support is a massive task and since we are able to offer it now in a platform-independent way it isn’t as high up on the priority list as some other projects. It also let’s us offer A/V for protocols that don’t have it at all like Jabber, Facebook Chat, and Google Talk (video)
@Karim: It will auto-update and we will list the version numbers on the forum as this happens. As for 80MB, I don’t see how it could get that high. Can you submit a bug report using the Help menu.
medj Said,
August 9, 2008 @ 9:53 am
@Steve: I don’t have the ability to select the dropdown to display groups. In my main window, I have “Contacts” and “Offline” since I have never created a group before.

Dunno if it is a Google hiccup at this point, but I am on central time and it keeps having problems connecting to Google talk… and actually, it just crashed as i was writing this message. It asked that I submit the report to Digsby but I am not sure it was sent.
Restarted digsby and it is still having the connection issues… connected about 3 mins later
hehe, what i just wrote was incidentally a journal.
Hope it helps.

Running it now. I’m bouncing between 10-20mb with 4 IM accounts open which is a huge improvement over what I had before. Also I noticed that animated emoticons loop now - awesome!
SillyHalfMexican Said,
August 9, 2008 @ 6:49 pm
Oh my. This does work nice! Well worth the wait.
When it first loads up, connects and loads the buddy lists, (MSN, AIM, Yahoo & GTalk) it has ~30MB usage. When it’s all done loading, ~15-20MB. When the buddy list isn’t in view, ~5-7MB! When it’s closed and has a few message windows up, 3MB! Holy smokes, great job. Windows do seem a bit more responsive. In the previous build, the message window would freeze up momentarily when I received a message. Doesn’t seem to do that anymore.
Thanks for another great build Digbsy team!
Yet another reason to recommend this to my friends who don’t like programs using a lot of memory, but want it to do a lot. lol.

I downloaded the new build two days ago. While it’s true the RAM usage is way down, Digsby seems to crash on my system about every 15 minutes or so and seems more unstable. This is just my experience. The previous (current) build although using a ton more RAM didn’t have any major performance issues that I came across during daily use. I hope when this build (upcoming)is released publicly, it will be more stable, I’ll downgrade to the current one and keep an eye out for the release.
Steve Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 2:42 pm
@Justin: Absolutely! We were expecting a drop in stability because it was a major redesign of the architecture and that is why we wanted to have some people test it before releasing to everyone. We have gotten some great bug reports and crash logs as a result and will fix the issues before release.
Brentt Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 2:57 pm
I download the new build also, and I love the RAM usage. It is down around 20MB on my machine, and sometimes it’s even lower. Which is amazing.
Also, I can’t find the feature in Digsby. But is there an area that allows me to tell Digsby to start up minimized, so I don’t have to see the sign in window or anything? Pidgin used to do it and I loved the ability to not have it pop up, even when it signs into the Digsby service, when I start up my computer.
Either way, great work so far! I’ll continue to use the beta release until the final one ships out the door.
Jahk Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 3:42 pm
I should not ask for anything more, considering how big an enhancement u guys have implemented here…. I am seeing memory usage as low as 3mb. Anyway… Please try to sneak in the control of the flashing taskbar on new messages. It really makes me twitch like i am about to go ‘postal’.
Hagata Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 4:47 pm
Hi Steve & digsby team, just a question:
I know it was really hard work, but as you “only” optimized code, RAM usage, performance and fixed bugs, what about the countless feature requests and improvement suggestions? Will they now be worked on really soon? Or will you continue to tweak such basic stuff? Bottom line: What is your roadmap?
Would be happy if you’d post more about that!
David Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 5:50 pm
@Doug: Yes. I’ve been using it for at least a few years. Instead of entering a screen name in the Send IM box, just enter a plus followed by their cell phone number including the country code and area code, +12223334444 for example. You can even add that to your buddy list like you would with any other screen name. The cell phone can reply to your messages using SMS and you’ll receive the messages like any other AIM message. However, this feature is no longer working in the latest Digsby release. I hope they fix this in the release for tomorrow. I use this often, so I had to roll back to build 15142.
Tybois Said,
August 10, 2008 @ 7:36 pm
I have noticed that “tweets” are a little slower via Digsby. Before they took about 2 mins to get from the person who sent them to me. Now, it is more like 10.

looks alright so far, im down from 60mb idle to about 20mb idle, still a bit higher than i would like (ran other programs as low as 4mb) but this does have WAY more features and it is definitely an improvement, will report any bugs should i run into any
couple questions though
is there any plans for IRC support? if so, is there any ETA?
ETA for Linux and Mac, i personally use Windows, linux and mac, and would like to see digsby ported over soon.

Steve Said,
August 11, 2008 @ 9:15 am
@Syk0tik0ne: Yes, IRC will be added with group chat very soon. We will start working on those two within a couple of releases.
@unruled: Agreed. The build after will do more to lower CPU usage.
@Hagata: Absolutely. We try to prioritize and while there are a ton of feature requests the biggest complaint has been performance and CPU usage. No that those are in check we can get back to adding features and getting the mac/linux versions ready for release.
@Jahk + Brentt: Those features are not there but we will add them. We are trying not to clutter up the user interface but the things both of you have mentioned have been requested by numerous people. We will add an “advanced preferences section” that will be a long list of all the little things we want to add in but haven’t for usability reasons.

Memory utilization improvements are amazing! My one beef so far is that the installer killed all my skins and even after I reinstalled the Aero_Glass skin, while setting to that skin in preferences I got an error and the skin looks all messed up once set. I already sent in the bug report w/screenshot.

Thanks for the hard work - one little suggestion. I REALLY like the links to the amazon mp3 search in the “listening to music” status message…however I don’t really understand why you’re using a snipr.com url…why not just put hyperlinked text that says “Amazon Song Information” or something like that…either way the true url is hidden - thus no super-long URL, but one is informative and one is confusing.
Just my 2 cents, I know you guys have a lot to work on, but this seemed like it should be a simple change (coming from a fellow developer

Hi Steve,
I just want to hint at the fact that my IM history isn’t searchable since the newest build (I can access it though). It is reproducable in the way, that this is a problem with every (ICQ) contact. (I don’t have any AIM/MSN/GTalk buddies, so I can’t check it, sorry!)
I did file a bug report anyway.
Bradleycorn Said,

So far the new release is pretty darn good. It’s memory usage is much better, and the UI is much more responsive. It does have it’s issues though, which is to be expected with beta software. I’ve noticed 3 issues in particular with the new release:
1.) It crashes seemingly randomly every so often. Sometimes when I’m not even doing anything. It always asks if I want to send a bug report, and I always say yes. Although I get no confirmation that it was sent, so I hope they are getting to the development team.
2.) I have dual monitors. When I dock it on the right side of my left monitor and set it to auto-hide, it “auto-hides” by sliding off my left monitor and onto my right monitor. Then if I hover on my right monitor it goes crazy switching back and forth between the 2 monitors. Awesome effects! I submitted this bug report as well.
3.) I know group chat isn’t supported yet (please please please bring it soon), but in the past, people could add me to their msn group chats. With this new version, that seems to be VERY buggy. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it works, but causes everyone to appear in the chat 3 or 4 times (which you can imagine makes the others in the chat not very happy). I’ve submitted a bug report for this as well.
It does seem much better on memory usage, and the UI is much more responsive. All in all, a great job. Get these last few bugs taken care of, and it’ll be time to move on to full group chat implementation!!!

I disagree with Luke, I think the link to Amazon in the “Listening to…” status is absolutely unnecessary, annoying, and cluttered. If there is a reason for implementing it, it would be much appreciated if it were an option in preferences. Other than that, nice work guys!

I just started Digsby about 10 minutes ago for the first time in about 10 hours. I have the new build installed. I saw the message on the login panel that it was updating. It seemed to have updated but then it said “Digsby needs to restart” or something along those lines. After seeing this message I thought I would browse the web for a bit, so I opened my Firefox 3.0 and then all of a sudden my computer just turned off. I restarted my computer and I can make it restart by opening digyby and then opening Firefox.
I have tried letting digsby run for a bit with the message “digsby needs to restart” but nothing happens.
Any clues what this could be?

Memory footprint is definitely an improvement. I can now connect to MSN at work behind the proxy, previously this was not working.
In regards to the performance and “snappiness” of the UI, it actually seems to have been reduced on my laptop. The buddy list is roughly three times slower when you initially open digsby and it is loading the contacts from all the accounts. I’d be happy to provide any specific details you think might be relevant to help address the problem.

I love it too. I decided to try the beta today to help out and I was surprised to see 3 crashes within a couple hours - of course I sent them every time. They seemed to be random and non-reproduceable.
I did notice the extra files in C: and deleted them.
Memory usage is lower but I can’t leave it on long enough to see what it’s like after 10-12 hours! Currently using 5 IM, 2 email, and 1 social account(s).
As for the port thing, I know it’s not actually random, but I didn’t want to say “several different known ports”.. but honestly, wouldn’t being able to set an incoming port improve connectability?

Now isn’t this nice, this concept of publicly releasing betas? Many will gladly help and find bugs while enjoying a new version, and you developers benefit from the flowing crash reports and user input. Win/Win as far as I can see. It’s amazing how much has been improved in just 2 days since the initial release of the public beta.
Hayden Said,

One thing about the installer, you might want to add those options about the digsby search engine and home page in a page prior to pressing install.
If you look over on lifehacker, you have people complaining about being ‘forced’ to install these - and still not being able to find the options after being told about it.
So for making those people a bit happier it might be good to changee it a bit…unless you want it to be obscure to get more installs/more cash - which is fine by me, since you guys are doing a great job that just gets better all the time! keep it up

The Modern Bubbling conversation theme (and any of its variants) has a minor flaw. It doesn’t truncate messages. E.g. a maximum length MSN message (400 characters) gets displayed on one giant long line instead of truncating itself into a neat paragraph depending on window size.

But I have a question, since I’ve been using digsby file transfers from friends always fail, I can send but not receive, I was wondering if this was just me or if its normal and if it will be fixed.

Everything’s been running fine since the last build so thank you for that
I have one question though, whenever a friend tries to send me a file via digsby it always fails, I can send files but not receive so I was wondering if this was just a glitch on my part, or if its normal and will be fixed.
Thank you for doing a great job.

Hey! I want to tell you something. I’m not sure if it is bug but when I ran my AIM on Digsby it showed 2 buddies of me were online but when I checked the contact list with AIM, it showed 5 buddies of me were online so i tried to disconnect and connect AIM from Digsby but no result! There were still 2. Is there a prob with AIM plugin?

The release right before 16998 was amazing, guys. MUCH more stable. Good work

great improvements on ram usage.. idle around 19mb .. on minimize less than 6mb .. great…
But one thing I can’t get to work even before the new beta was released. i’ve only icq contacts in my contact list. they are stored in groups on the server … i don’t want to see the offline contacts in these groups but in a separate group (offline contacts). I also don’t to see group with only offline contacts. i know there is an option in the menu but it has no effect. in old versions this feature worked perfectly … any idea?

Pushed a quick fix for the MSN disconnect issue we introduced. New revision is r17003.
@hau: You can collapse the group. We didn’t want to make it so you can completely hide buddies since you can still send offline messages, SMS, and email. The “Group Offline Contacts” option puts them in the same group so it doesn’t clutter the buddy list. The “Hide Offline Groups” option hides groups where all buddies are offline but not the fake “Offline” group that is created.

Digsby’s getting better and better, and smoothly moves towards world domination.
However!
It still has problems with input of char’s outside standard latin alphabet because the textentry widget uses US(?) keyboard layout (or sth) - right_alt+a doesn’t work as it supposed to - instead of nice, happy ‘ą’ it select’s everything and cuts it.
Not nice.
(A bug report was sent few months ago, no only by me I think)
Apart from that little thing - each build feels better than the one before.

Hi Steve,
I get the Jabber error message “Authentification Error: SASL authentification failed” with R17003. Any hints?
regards,
Sven

Hi Steve,
ok that’s exactly what i expected from these options.. but i don’t see the “Offline Contacts” group.. that’s why i’ve to disable the “Group offline contacts” Option to see my offline contacts in each group to send a offline message..
to hide the offline contacts again i’ve to disable “Show offline contacts”…
to make a long story short: “Show offline Contacts” works as expected, “Group offline contacts” not.. unfortunately

Is there an ETA for fixing the RTL issues?
Is it coming on any beta fix soon? or will we have to wait for it for the “official” release?
I can’t use HTTP MSN at work with the official release, and I can’t use the beta because I can’t read/write RTL like in the official release.
If you can make it happen in the next release it will be much appreciated

Having these updates off an old blog post doesn’t seem to be the best way to update users since RSS feeds don’t get updated. I have to keep visiting the same blog post instead of using the power of RSS like it should be.

Bug with Gmail integration.
When you enable “Always use HTTPS” on Gmail under settings, Digsby doesn’t work with gmail anymore.

Wow awesome improvement on the memory. I use digsby before and I directly uninstall it because of its memory hunger.
It only uses around 11Mb when I minimize to system tray. I’m gonna try further. Awesome job Digsby team.

Thanks for the quick fix, great job so far with Digsby, the only thing that keeps it from being my main chat client is the small avatars, and the need to restart for other contacts’ avatars to update
