Testers Needed for New Release!

Note: This is a test build with bugs and it may crash.  The release will be pushed to everyone once we iron out the kinks.

The new build is almost ready for release and we need your help testing it before it is pushed out to everyone. We are very eager to get it out the door since it includes some highly anticipated improvements:

  • RAM Optimization: Many people have reported that Digsby is taking 70MB – 110MB during normal use. If you leave Digsby running for a while, the memory leaks caused RAM usage to climb to 150MB+ on some systems. We completely reworked the architecture to use less memory and also improved the memory management by releasing objects when they are no longer needed.  We also hunted down and eliminated numerous memory leaks.  All in all, these changes lower Digsby’s RAM usage by over 50%. It should now hover in the 20MB – 50MB range depending on how many accounts you have and what you are doing at the moment.  There is still more we can do and our goal is to get RAM utilization down even further!
  • Performance: The changes in architecture improved the performance of simple user interface elements like buttons and menus; they now draw 2x – 3x faster!  Digsby should be much more responsive now than ever before. However, while this build focused on RAM optimization, the next 1-2 builds will have a strong focus on improving “perceived performance” even more, including things like GUI response time, CPU utilization, etc.
  • Firewalls and Proxy Servers: Every IM protocol now automatically tries to connect using several different ports to improve the odds of getting through restrictive firewalls and proxy servers.  MSN Protocol also falls back to an HTTP-based method of connecting, which makes the traffic look like web page requests.  Those who have not been able to use MSN or other IM protocols due to firewall/proxy restrictions should now be able to connect without any issues.
  • Crash Reporter: We still have a few bugs that cause Digsby to crash. These have been hard to hunt down because they are rare, random, and hard to reproduce.  The new release includes a crash reporter that will ask you whether you want to send a crash log to us if Digsby should crash.  This will greatly help us in hunting down and fixing the remaining issues that are causing crashes.  The major changes in architecture in this build may introduce a couple of new crash causing bugs and that is one of the reasons why we want to test the build before releasing it to everyone.
  • Bug Fixes + Enhancements: Over the past two months we have added a large number of bug fixes and enhancements.  There are too many to list here but we will include a full Change Log when the release is pushed to everyone.

Unlike previous releases, which were pushed on a weekly basis, this one includes over two months of new code so we want make sure we didn’t introduce any new bugs.  If you run into any serious problems testing the new build, you can revert back to the current release by downloading the installer from our website. No matter what happens, none of your preferences or account information will be lost. There are instructions for getting the test release on our forum:

http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=2116

Update 1 (8/10/08, 2:30pm): Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and the bug reports.  We will knock out the issues as quickly as possible to get this ready for release.  Also, thank you for the crash reports.  The new architecture did introduce a few crash causing issues and the crash logs will help us hunt these down ASAP.  Keep on eye on this blog for updates.  We will most likely push an update with fixes to those testing this new release sometime tomorrow.

Update 2 (8/11/08, 8:00pm): We just pushed an update (r16760) to all that are testing.  We are really close to fixing the issue that is causing most of the crashes but it didn’t make it into today’s update. The air conditioning in the office broke and we are up to 89 degrees so we’re going to call it a night but we will hit the ground running tomorrow (A/C will be fixed at 7am) and are pretty sure the crash will be fixed by end of day. The following bugs fixed in this release are:

  • Fixed a bug that prevented buddies from being added because list of accounts didn’t update
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck in “Checking for Updates” for some users with proxy servers
  • Fixed a memory leak in Facebook Chat that caused RAM to skyrocket when the connection was lost
  • Fixed a bug that caused some Hotmail accounts to get stuck in “Connecting…”
  • Fixed a memory leak when closing an IM window with multiple tabs

Update 3 (8/12/08, 8:00pm): We just pushed an update (r16808) to all that are testing.  Fixes include:

  • Fixed a bug that was causing *most* of the crashes we have seen so far.  There might be a couple more crash causing issues which we are hunting down now.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to get stuck in “Digsby needs to restart…” after an auto-update for those who never installed Digsby prior to this test build
  • Installer no longer includes the Microsoft VC++ Redistributable (so no more temp files in C:\)
  • Fixed a bug that prevented you from deleting Jabber accounts
  • Fixed another bug that caused Hotmail accounts to get stuck in “Connecting…”
  • Fixed a bug that caused conversation log searching to break
  • Fixed a bug that caused Digsby to not exit if you had an IM window with multiple tabs open
  • Fixed a GDI object leak in popups
  • Shaved a few megs off the installer size

Update 4 (8/15/08, 2:30pm): We just pushed an update (r16927) to all that are testing. Fixes include:

  • Fixed numerous crash causing issues! Hopefully there will be far fewer crashes now but we are still hunting down a few that remain
  • Temporarily bringing back the VC++ redistributable because our fix worked on Win2k/XP but not on Vista. It will not write files to C:\
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the MSN HTTP method of connecting from working in some cases
  • Fixed a bug with mislabeled RTF messages
  • Fixed a bug that caused Gmail to get stuck in “Connecting…” after a network disruption
  • Fixed a bug that caused Yahoo Protocol to say “Failed to Connect” when it should be “Authentication Error” because an invalid username was entered
  • Fixed a bug that caused Yahoo Protocol to disconnect when you reject a file transfer
  • Fixed a bug that caused no IM window to show if the sound which was suppose to play on incoming IM is missing
  • Fixed a bug that broke SMS over AIM
  • Very long nicknames now get cut off with a “…” instead of wrapping to multiple lines on themes where wrapping looks bad
  • Some conversation themes that looked bad when maximized now look correct
  • Crash reporter now confirms that the report has been sent

Update 5 (8/19/08, 11:10am): We just pushed an update (r16998 r17003) to all that are testing. Fixes include:

  • Fixed a bug that caused the input box in the IM window not to clear after a tab was dragged out into its own window and then dragged back in
  • Added Yahoo Mail support for BTInternet Yahoo mail accounts
  • Fixed a bug in deleting MSN buddies when signed in via HTTP
  • Twitter rate limit and default update times now based on 100 requests per hour instead of 70

28MB of RAM usage is a SWEET decrease from the 50-60some that I was getting before. W00t, thanks for finally satisfying our cravings for the new build!

  2. Tim Said,

Correction: 28MB was just at the start, when it was connecting and doing all that work. Now it’s at 18MB :)

I’m very impressed with the improvements in this build! It installed perfectly fine for me and everything connected as expected.

Memory dropped from start-up of ~70mb to ~30mb now and unlike before it holds a pretty constant footprint.

    Thanks!

I found a pretty major bug with this new build. Sure, the memory improvement is great, but the new build has problems with cell phones. Using AIM, I can’t send messages to my cell phone or any of my friend’s cell phones. Digsby will think the message went through, but none of the cell phones receive it. As expected, Digsby does not receive any messages sent from the cell phones. I’m not talking about messages sent to somebody logged on AIM from their cell phone but SMS by messaging +15555555555. I’m fairly sure this is a fault of the new build because I tried it with the real AIM client and the old Digsby build (15142) and both work perfectly. I’ve submitted a bug report.

  9. medj Said,

    August 9, 2008 @ 2:09 am

I’m at about 32mb in RAM which is a big improvement.

I submitted a bug report because I was unable to Add a Contact. The “Add” button won’t become available to click. Anyone else have this problem?

The question I wonder though, will it ever be possible to be able to video/audio chat with people through Digsby the same way as MSN. I just tested it with someone, and they seem to get a link that you come to a page here on this domain where you video chat through the browser. Will future releases ever put the webcam window right in the convo window kinda like MSN?

Overall, everything seems more faster though. I like it!

Will enjoy the less RAM usage =] so thanks in advance for that!

As a follow up: went from using about 70 K before, to now from between 19 K to 30 K. When completely minimized and just running the program with no conversations or anything active it only uses about 14 K which is also awesome.
    thanks again!

and hey, on vista x64, it still keeps above 80Mb and just starts lagging horribly at times.. im beginning to think its something that digsby doesnt like abt vista x64.. but then that needs to be fixed, because it is a popular OS.

  14. Steve Said,

    August 9, 2008 @ 8:57 am

@David: We’ll take a look at the bug report.

@medj: Did you choose a group to add them to? As for Audio/Video, we will add native support but in the more distant future. Implementing each protocol’s A/V support is a massive task and since we are able to offer it now in a platform-independent way it isn’t as high up on the priority list as some other projects. It also let’s us offer A/V for protocols that don’t have it at all like Jabber, Facebook Chat, and Google Talk (video)

@Karim: It will auto-update and we will list the version numbers on the forum as this happens. As for 80MB, I don’t see how it could get that high. Can you submit a bug report using the Help menu.

  15. medj Said,

    August 9, 2008 @ 9:53 am

@Steve: I don’t have the ability to select the dropdown to display groups. In my main window, I have “Contacts” and “Offline” since I have never created a group before.

  16. Matt Said,

I’m really impressed with this new build. RAM usage oscillates between 18 MB and 32 MB. So far so good !

Dunno if it is a Google hiccup at this point, but I am on central time and it keeps having problems connecting to Google talk… and actually, it just crashed as i was writing this message. It asked that I submit the report to Digsby but I am not sure it was sent. :)

Restarted digsby and it is still having the connection issues… connected about 3 mins later

hehe, what i just wrote was incidentally a journal. :) Hope it helps.

Running it now. I’m bouncing between 10-20mb with 4 IM accounts open which is a huge improvement over what I had before. Also I noticed that animated emoticons loop now – awesome!

  19. SillyHalfMexican Said,

    August 9, 2008 @ 6:49 pm

Oh my. This does work nice! Well worth the wait.
When it first loads up, connects and loads the buddy lists, (MSN, AIM, Yahoo & GTalk) it has ~30MB usage. When it’s all done loading, ~15-20MB. When the buddy list isn’t in view, ~5-7MB! When it’s closed and has a few message windows up, 3MB! Holy smokes, great job. Windows do seem a bit more responsive. In the previous build, the message window would freeze up momentarily when I received a message. Doesn’t seem to do that anymore.

Thanks for another great build Digbsy team!
Yet another reason to recommend this to my friends who don’t like programs using a lot of memory, but want it to do a lot. lol.

@David: Is that a feature of AIM? Never knew I could send an SMS to a non-AIM subscriber. Is that what you’re implying?

BTW – tried it to my cell phone and it doesn’t work.

  22. Dylan Said,

So far, so good! I’m impressed with the Ram usage. Hovering below 20 Mb and is often times below 10 Mb.

Rewording medj’s idea: There has to be a way of integrating a browser window inside or adjacent to Digsby’s chat window to run the current web based A/V support, can it not?

I downloaded the new build two days ago. While it’s true the RAM usage is way down, Digsby seems to crash on my system about every 15 minutes or so and seems more unstable. This is just my experience. The previous (current) build although using a ton more RAM didn’t have any major performance issues that I came across during daily use. I hope when this build (upcoming)is released publicly, it will be more stable, I’ll downgrade to the current one and keep an eye out for the release.

@Justin: Absolutely! We were expecting a drop in stability because it was a major redesign of the architecture and that is why we wanted to have some people test it before releasing to everyone. We have gotten some great bug reports and crash logs as a result and will fix the issues before release.

I download the new build also, and I love the RAM usage. It is down around 20MB on my machine, and sometimes it’s even lower. Which is amazing.

Also, I can’t find the feature in Digsby. But is there an area that allows me to tell Digsby to start up minimized, so I don’t have to see the sign in window or anything? Pidgin used to do it and I loved the ability to not have it pop up, even when it signs into the Digsby service, when I start up my computer.

Either way, great work so far! I’ll continue to use the beta release until the final one ships out the door.

I should not ask for anything more, considering how big an enhancement u guys have implemented here…. I am seeing memory usage as low as 3mb. Anyway… Please try to sneak in the control of the flashing taskbar on new messages. It really makes me twitch like i am about to go ‘postal’.

  35. Hagata Said,

Hi Steve & digsby team, just a question:
I know it was really hard work, but as you “only” optimized code, RAM usage, performance and fixed bugs, what about the countless feature requests and improvement suggestions? Will they now be worked on really soon? Or will you continue to tweak such basic stuff? Bottom line: What is your roadmap?
Would be happy if you’d post more about that! :)

  36. David Said,

    August 10, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

@Doug: Yes. I’ve been using it for at least a few years. Instead of entering a screen name in the Send IM box, just enter a plus followed by their cell phone number including the country code and area code, +12223334444 for example. You can even add that to your buddy list like you would with any other screen name. The cell phone can reply to your messages using SMS and you’ll receive the messages like any other AIM message. However, this feature is no longer working in the latest Digsby release. I hope they fix this in the release for tomorrow. I use this often, so I had to roll back to build 15142.

looks alright so far, im down from 60mb idle to about 20mb idle, still a bit higher than i would like (ran other programs as low as 4mb) but this does have WAY more features and it is definitely an improvement, will report any bugs should i run into any

    couple questions though

is there any plans for IRC support? if so, is there any ETA?

ETA for Linux and Mac, i personally use Windows, linux and mac, and would like to see digsby ported over soon.

  41. Steve Said,

@Syk0tik0ne: Yes, IRC will be added with group chat very soon. We will start working on those two within a couple of releases.

@unruled: Agreed. The build after will do more to lower CPU usage.

@Hagata: Absolutely. We try to prioritize and while there are a ton of feature requests the biggest complaint has been performance and CPU usage. No that those are in check we can get back to adding features and getting the mac/linux versions ready for release.

@Jahk + Brentt: Those features are not there but we will add them. We are trying not to clutter up the user interface but the things both of you have mentioned have been requested by numerous people. We will add an “advanced preferences section” that will be a long list of all the little things we want to add in but haven’t for usability reasons.

Memory utilization improvements are amazing! My one beef so far is that the installer killed all my skins and even after I reinstalled the Aero_Glass skin, while setting to that skin in preferences I got an error and the skin looks all messed up once set. I already sent in the bug report w/screenshot.

Thanks for the hard work – one little suggestion. I REALLY like the links to the amazon mp3 search in the “listening to music” status message…however I don’t really understand why you’re using a snipr.com url…why not just put hyperlinked text that says “Amazon Song Information” or something like that…either way the true url is hidden – thus no super-long URL, but one is informative and one is confusing.

Just my 2 cents, I know you guys have a lot to work on, but this seemed like it should be a simple change (coming from a fellow developer :-)

    Hi Steve,

I just want to hint at the fact that my IM history isn’t searchable since the newest build (I can access it though). It is reproducable in the way, that this is a problem with every (ICQ) contact. (I don’t have any AIM/MSN/GTalk buddies, so I can’t check it, sorry!)

I did file a bug report anyway.

  52. Bradleycorn Said,

    August 11, 2008 @ 5:28 pm

So far the new release is pretty darn good. It’s memory usage is much better, and the UI is much more responsive. It does have it’s issues though, which is to be expected with beta software. I’ve noticed 3 issues in particular with the new release:

1.) It crashes seemingly randomly every so often. Sometimes when I’m not even doing anything. It always asks if I want to send a bug report, and I always say yes. Although I get no confirmation that it was sent, so I hope they are getting to the development team.

2.) I have dual monitors. When I dock it on the right side of my left monitor and set it to auto-hide, it “auto-hides” by sliding off my left monitor and onto my right monitor. Then if I hover on my right monitor it goes crazy switching back and forth between the 2 monitors. Awesome effects! I submitted this bug report as well.

3.) I know group chat isn’t supported yet (please please please bring it soon), but in the past, people could add me to their msn group chats. With this new version, that seems to be VERY buggy. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it works, but causes everyone to appear in the chat 3 or 4 times (which you can imagine makes the others in the chat not very happy). I’ve submitted a bug report for this as well.

It does seem much better on memory usage, and the UI is much more responsive. All in all, a great job. Get these last few bugs taken care of, and it’ll be time to move on to full group chat implementation!!!

  53. Olivia Mullins Said,

I disagree with Luke, I think the link to Amazon in the “Listening to…” status is absolutely unnecessary, annoying, and cluttered. If there is a reason for implementing it, it would be much appreciated if it were an option in preferences. Other than that, nice work guys!

I just started Digsby about 10 minutes ago for the first time in about 10 hours. I have the new build installed. I saw the message on the login panel that it was updating. It seemed to have updated but then it said “Digsby needs to restart” or something along those lines. After seeing this message I thought I would browse the web for a bit, so I opened my Firefox 3.0 and then all of a sudden my computer just turned off. I restarted my computer and I can make it restart by opening digyby and then opening Firefox.
I have tried letting digsby run for a bit with the message “digsby needs to restart” but nothing happens.

I manually re-installed the new setup file snd that works fine. This is all on Windows XP.

@rick: This will happen if you never installed the non-test release. Is that the case?

@juan: Use Help > Send Bug Report. It may be temporary network flakiness.

@jahk: Had a couple reports of this and are looking into it.

@Shawn: I think it is just coincidence but today’s build will fix a large chunk of the crashes.

@Nick: It should be automatic. Can you use Help > Send Bug Report after it fails.

Memory footprint is definitely an improvement. I can now connect to MSN at work behind the proxy, previously this was not working.

In regards to the performance and “snappiness” of the UI, it actually seems to have been reduced on my laptop. The buddy list is roughly three times slower when you initially open digsby and it is loading the contacts from all the accounts. I’d be happy to provide any specific details you think might be relevant to help address the problem.

  80. Steve Said,

I love it too. I decided to try the beta today to help out and I was surprised to see 3 crashes within a couple hours – of course I sent them every time. They seemed to be random and non-reproduceable.

I did notice the extra files in C: and deleted them.

Memory usage is lower but I can’t leave it on long enough to see what it’s like after 10-12 hours! Currently using 5 IM, 2 email, and 1 social account(s).

As for the port thing, I know it’s not actually random, but I didn’t want to say “several different known ports”.. but honestly, wouldn’t being able to set an incoming port improve connectability?

Now isn’t this nice, this concept of publicly releasing betas? Many will gladly help and find bugs while enjoying a new version, and you developers benefit from the flowing crash reports and user input. Win/Win as far as I can see. It’s amazing how much has been improved in just 2 days since the initial release of the public beta.

  93. Hayden Said,

One thing about the installer, you might want to add those options about the digsby search engine and home page in a page prior to pressing install.
If you look over on lifehacker, you have people complaining about being ‘forced’ to install these – and still not being able to find the options after being told about it.

So for making those people a bit happier it might be good to changee it a bit…unless you want it to be obscure to get more installs/more cash – which is fine by me, since you guys are doing a great job that just gets better all the time! keep it up :)

After letting it go through the update process, my computer rebooted itself. I thought it was just random, and let it restart. Upon loading Digsby it did the same thing. I had to close digsby from the task manager before it caused another soft reboot.

I must be the luckiest Digsbetester out there. I keep using it and it hasnt crashed, rebooted my box or anything. Oh and mem usage as low as 13M and as high as 27. Awesome. Keep up the great work!

  115. Ace of Blades Said,

    August 13, 2008 @ 6:03 pm

Other than the inability to IM cell phones I’ve been updating with the beta releases and I haven’t crashed once.

How long do you think it’ll be until a stable release will be finished, personally the builds have seemed stable but it seems its different for others.

Oh well keep up the good work.

  116. RJMacReady Said,

    August 13, 2008 @ 7:05 pm

What everyone should remember really is that this IS still beta software and its expected that you’ll find tons of bugs and crashes. Continue sending in the bug/crash reports and if you need Digsby for anything mission-critical, download the official version.

  117. Dewey Said,

    August 13, 2008 @ 8:19 pm

The new Digsby is actually quite stable. I have only gotten one crash while launching halo. I think you can release it now.

I think Digsby looks like a great program and I keep checking this site to get the status of the updates, but I was wondering if there’s any ETA on a public release of this new build. I know you guys are working hard and want this to be as good as possible before you release it to everyone and so do I, but I was just curious. Thanks for all your hard work!

  130. Steve Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

@a fan: ASAP of course. It looks like the crash reports died down with this new release so we will keep our fingers crossed but there are still some bugs that we need to iron out.

  131. twoluvcats Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

I had to abandon the beta today. When beta was in use and I would restart FireFox, my computer would crash & restart. Not cool. Release version does not cause this at all.

  132. SL83 Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 3:54 pm

Probably a better idea to post a new entry that a new build is available via auto-update.

  133. Matthew Lieder Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 4:41 pm

Yeah, it is kind of a pain that I have to keep checking this post on their website to find out if there’s a new build out, instead of just letting my RSS reader inform me :/

  134. Steve Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

@Matthew: Understandable :) The auto-update will let you know too but that makes sense.

  135. Matthew Lieder Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 5:39 pm

I leave Digsby always running on my computer and restart my computer only about once a month, so the login-trigger auto-update isn’t a good notifier either :p. Probably the ideal solution would be to send IM’s to beta-testers every time a new build is released, like you do for non-beta releases.

  136. Steve Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 5:42 pm

@Matthew: We stopped doing that a couple of builds ago because we end up DDOS’ing our blog even with a dedicated server. We’re working on fixing that too :)

  138. Drei Said,

    August 15, 2008 @ 10:26 pm

Memory usage has improved! Nice work guys.

Just a thought, maybe some of the bugs and/or crashes are not caused by Digsby, but because of the user’s hardware and/or some other software that were installed. Maybe those are factors on why you can not replicate some of the bugs.

Keep up the good work! Thanks!

  141. RJMacReady Said,

    August 16, 2008 @ 12:37 pm

The Modern Bubbling conversation theme (and any of its variants) has a minor flaw. It doesn’t truncate messages. E.g. a maximum length MSN message (400 characters) gets displayed on one giant long line instead of truncating itself into a neat paragraph depending on window size.

Just thought I’d point that out to you guys :3

  142. Ace of Blades Said,

great improvements on ram usage.. idle around 19mb .. on minimize less than 6mb .. great…

But one thing I can’t get to work even before the new beta was released. i’ve only icq contacts in my contact list. they are stored in groups on the server … i don’t want to see the offline contacts in these groups but in a separate group (offline contacts). I also don’t to see group with only offline contacts. i know there is an option in the menu but it has no effect. in old versions this feature worked perfectly … any idea?

  153. Steve Said,

    August 19, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

Pushed a quick fix for the MSN disconnect issue we introduced. New revision is r17003.

@hau: You can collapse the group. We didn’t want to make it so you can completely hide buddies since you can still send offline messages, SMS, and email. The “Group Offline Contacts” option puts them in the same group so it doesn’t clutter the buddy list. The “Hide Offline Groups” option hides groups where all buddies are offline but not the fake “Offline” group that is created.

Digsby’s getting better and better, and smoothly moves towards world domination.
    However!
It still has problems with input of char’s outside standard latin alphabet because the textentry widget uses US(?) keyboard layout (or sth) – right_alt+a doesn’t work as it supposed to – instead of nice, happy ‘ą’ it select’s everything and cuts it.
    Not nice.
(A bug report was sent few months ago, no only by me I think)

Apart from that little thing – each build feels better than the one before.

    Hi Steve,

ok that’s exactly what i expected from these options.. but i don’t see the “Offline Contacts” group.. that’s why i’ve to disable the “Group offline contacts” Option to see my offline contacts in each group to send a offline message..

to hide the offline contacts again i’ve to disable “Show offline contacts”…

to make a long story short: “Show offline Contacts” works as expected, “Group offline contacts” not.. unfortunately

Is it coming on any beta fix soon? or will we have to wait for it for the “official” release?
I can’t use HTTP MSN at work with the official release, and I can’t use the beta because I can’t read/write RTL like in the official release.
If you can make it happen in the next release it will be much appreciated

    @ Howie:

Simply fill out a Bug Report and the Developers will get the input they need ;)

You can do that by clicking “Help” > “Submit Bug Report” from Digby’s menu.

Now this is how a testing group should work! Near daily pushes, and not waiting for a hundred bug fix count (or thousand like CS seems to be :-/)
Just grabbed the 9:10 r17348 release on my VM, looking good. Not a crash yet in this fork.

Are you planning on implementing MSNP15 anytime soon?

  204. Chris Said,

Random bug: Msn chat, when clicking on sms tab you get an empty “to:” space, however, clicking on the call tab adds the name. Also, the name fills in when buddy responds or has sent you a new message.

  205. Chris Said,

    August 30, 2008 @ 7:04 pm

Same with aim, maybe just the messenge window in general?

  206. Josh Said,

    August 30, 2008 @ 8:43 pm

I really like digsby a lot but the main thing that keeps me from using it full time is that the file transfer at least on the aim protocol isn’t working. If I do a file send via trillian it works like a champ. But with Digsby it just hangs there until one of us cancels the send. Are you looking into this? I really would enjoy this feature and it’s all that’s keeping me from using this great client all the time.

Also, any chances of “direct connection” being implemented? Sorry if I’ve missed that discussion before.

    Thanks!

Got my first crash last night, completely random.

I was using Firefox, had a chat window minimized, recieved an IM (via AIM) from someone I was already in a chat with, and it crashed.

I reported it, but, it can’t be reproduced, obviously. Just random. Oh well, it happens. Digsby is too good to me to bash on it!

  211. JC Said,

    September 1, 2008 @ 2:37 am

What happened to the drop down selection of status messages from the top of the buddy list window? It seems to have disappeared in this last update. At least for me it did.

  214. KuriKokku Said,

It seems that my sounds and most notifications are gone.

The settings are all correct, and I’ve disabled and enabled them again with no avail. I can’t be sure if it’s this latest release that’s done it, but restarting Digsby doesn’t help…haven’t tried rebooting the computer yet.

  215. Steve Said,

    September 2, 2008 @ 11:13 am

@KuriKokku – You set your preference to disable notifications while “Away” so there will be no sounds or popups while your status is set to Away.

@Randy – emailing you for follow up info.

@JD – we’ll keep pushing to make it even better!

@MCoreD + Josh – we have some critical connectivity issues to resolve and then we will take some time to make file transfers solid.

@Chris – You need to enter an SMS number

    @Fernando – Absolutely.

@malcolm – It will show as if it came from your gmail account I think. Test it out though. The gmail servers may override if you set it to always reply from the address it was sent to by default.

  216. Randy Said,

    September 3, 2008 @ 5:06 pm

In the latest update, for some reason my AIM account keeps randomly getting unchecked in the “IM Accounts” in the preferences screen. I am connecting to AIM, Yahoo, and Facebook. The others are working fine, but the AIM gets unchecked for some reason.

But on the bright side, the last few released builds haven’t crashed at all!

  218. Chris Said,

Great job guys on r17380! I’m still drooling for the next release though! Hopefully on Monday, it’ll be here! I actually like the new URL when you’re listening to a song. For me, it actually doesn’t display on msn….the whole song just shows as a link, and will actually link over – which is really nice! It’s been like that since the snipr url was introduced earlier. I have not had a single crash yet – and, everything’s working as normal. Actually, i can’t say that – because, at odd times, it will freeze, and will freeze everything else. But, that’s not all Digsby’s fault. It’s also Firefox 3’s fault – and, Google Chrome’s (Yea, i figured i’d check that one out too since i seem to beta testing things that i can’t even begin to count on both hands lol.)

I’m really anxious to see the “Promote Digsby” thingy though – i was like, a few hours off getting 17431, but, then, it reverted back, so, i was kinda screwed for the update – and, i guess all for good reason. :)

Anxiously waiting and drooling guys – can NOT seem to wait to see what else ya guys have up your sleeves :D

Hey guys, great job with the recent build. The only problem I still have though is that I can’t receive or send files most of the time. I really don’t know why. I’m using Windows Vista SP1, the windows firewall permits digsby. Any idea of what’s up?

    Thanks.

  220. Call Me Crazy Said,

Any idea of when the next release is coming out, testing wise? On the 3rd you stated it would be out the next morning with a fix for the freeze, and well, it’s the 9th now. Still nothing.

Just wondering, cause I’m ready to find more bugs and get this perfected! =]

    Build 17380 –

I’m still having the problem with it disconnecting me from my AIM account, but I think I know what causes it. (well, more like when it happens)

Everyday when I leave my apartment, I lock my computer so my roommates don’t mess with it. When I come back, seems to be about 25-50% of the time or so, my AIM is disconnected. This doesn’t seem to happen if I don’t lock the computer, so I am thinking the two things are related somehow.

It is still only AIM though, Facebook and Yahoo! IM systems are still connected. I am also still connected to everything else… 2 MySpace accounts, 2 Yahoo! mail accounts, and my Facebook account… but AIM disconnects. Seems weird.

  223. Chris Said,

    September 9, 2008 @ 7:06 am

Steve….i have a suggestion! I got to thinking earlier tonight…and, realized something :) I dunno if it’s already in there….a way that you can maybe have a feature that supports alerts for RSS feeds from say, Google, MyYahoo, My AOL….etc? I don’t even know if it’s possible (You’re the programmer :) Hope there is some way – cause, i’ve been getting into RSS feeds alot now too – and, realized that Digsby doesn’t have them lol :)

I’m sure i’ll find some other things useful as i go along lmao.

    oO

  224. Peter Said,

Just to update – still not having any major issues with Digsby. RAM usage is under control and it works. I would like to put in another plug for group conversations, though. It’s been at or near the top of the feature request list for some time now and is something that we use at work.

On the whole, I like the work you’ve done. I appreciate the regular updates and have not had to fall back to any other IM clients so far. The worst problem I have is that others have to add me to group conversations.

I’m having a problem with my saved status messages. On one computer, I have build 17525. On another computer, I have the last “offcial” non-testing build. If I’m signed on with build 17525 then go on the other computer and sign on, then my status messages somehow get erased.

  228. Arges Said,

I’m still having allot of memory issues, as well as some other minor glitches. For instance, when i try to resize one edge of it, the bottom extends down too. Also, when i hover my mouse over a ‘buddy’ the little pop-up window takes about 30 seconds to load, and then sometimes won’t go away

  229. OzzyOne Said,

Great. All it needs now is to show recived smileys and a way to send them, and I can convert my girlfriend to this great program. This is the only thing stopping her. She can’t talk to her friends without her own smileys…

  233. Alberto Said,

For some reason the last 3 or so builds have caused crashes that never occured before.

I have reported them but its very strange and seemingly random.

    I love this thing though

  234. loof Said,

    September 15, 2008 @ 11:33 am

I realize that you’re trying to make the windows version stable but have these builds been pushed out as the regular updates yet? IMO, the current build of Digsby is worlds better than the version previous to this post.

I’m mostly just sick of having to check this post for the latest update. It makes it tough to tell whether something I’m experiencing is new or from the previous builds. With separate posts I can just take a look at the comments to get an idea of what’s going on.

I just installed Digsby and absolutely love it. I’m so glad I switched from Trillian…and Pidgin doesn’t have the features either.

Anyways, about the RAM usage: immediately after install, after 30 minutes of use, it’s using 148MB of RAM. That being said, most people have 2GB+ of RAM these days, so it’s not that big of a deal for me.

    Thanks!

  242. Indigo Said,

This is probably not a bug, but it is really annoying – I have to reinstall my custom emoticons every time Digsby automatically updates.

With so many updates going on recently, i’m starting to hate the update method. this all sing-on -> download -> restart -> sing-on again is just too bloated.
What about notifying about updates, then downloading, and then restarting when I WANT TO. sometimes I just need to login urgently (yes, i know this is beta an all) to find someone on chat for a short thing, but i have to wait the whole download…

please consider this the next time you review the update process.
