AIM Servers are Down

The AIM login servers are down. This is system wide and you will not be able to log in with AIM 5.9, AIM in Gmail, Digsby, or other third party IM clients. AIM 6+ connects to a different set of servers and connectivity seems to be more reliable if you need a temporary solution. We will post an update here once service is restored.

Update: It looks like the AIM servers are back online.

Update 2: AIM servers are down again as of June 19th, 11:00am EST

Update 3: It looks like AIM servers are back online as of June 19th, 11:20am EST

Are the servers still down? I connected fine this morning (730MST) but lost connection to my accounts around 850. Digsby just keeps trying to reconnect….

I really appreciate the announcement letting us know what’s up. I got a virus that has caused my laptop’s Internet connection to do some weird things and was thinking this might be a part of it. Keep up the good work.

I check back here every day in case there’s an update… despite logically knowing that my autoupdater’s gonna catch it anyways. :)

  23. Char-Lee Wiebe Said,

    June 23, 2008 @ 5:41 pm

i’m getting upset here. it says my email and/or login name (Char) are being used. it allowed digsby to load onto my computer occupying precious space i got second hand (cant afford shit or cas) and now i see no help buttons to contact anyone to help me on this matter. this is just as f#$%ed up as facebook (whick is why i joined “The tyranny of the Faceless Facebook Customer Service Staff.” I am sick of shit not working and the necessary help tools being unavailable. I did want to give this thing a chance/try, but if i do not hear back in 1 week’s time (Monday June 30, 2008), i will delete this if i cannot use it. not unreasonable. just dont want to slow down an already slow computer with something that’s not working in the first place. thanks boiz.

my aim is down on my mobile today…anyone else having the same issues?

  25. Danny Said,

    June 23, 2008 @ 11:50 pm

Digsby won’t let me stay on AIM for more than 2 minutes with my primary screen name with over 250 contacts…but with my other screen name with like 10 contacts it keeps me on fine.

  26. Demonhawk Said,

    June 24, 2008 @ 1:36 pm

I seem to be having issues connecting today as well. I believe servers might be down again.

  27. Steve Said,

    June 24, 2008 @ 11:46 pm

@Deomnhawk - All is well here and no other reports. If it continues use Help > Send Bug Report.

  28. Kid Arez Said,

    June 25, 2008 @ 7:09 pm

Um, why are these updates neccasary? Digsby has nothing to do with the servers being down so why announce it when they do go down?

There should only be one update saying that if Digsby fails to connect that Digsby can connect fine and if it doesn’t, it’s a server problem.

I could be mis-understanding how Multi-protocol IM Clients work.

  29. Steve Said,

    June 25, 2008 @ 7:53 pm

@Kid Arez - There is always the chance that one of the protocols change and that breaks Digsby (and other multi-protocol clients). We announce it here so people know it is a server-side issue with the service itself.

Any idea when the linux version for Digsby is going to be released on the website?

  37. Steve Said,

    July 2, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

@Alara Moonrunner - We will work on the linux release as soon as we launch the mac version

@kurlylox - that is a person visiting your widget ;)

    @Getreignedon - agreed

  38. Thrik Said,

    July 2, 2008 @ 3:13 pm

Also, I have two bugs to report. Both of these have been reproducible, since they’ve followed me beyond an entire system reformat :)

    1) AIM can only sign on as invisible. If one tries to go invisible in the midst of a session, it simply will not work. While it’s easy enough to work around this (simply sign off AIM and log back in as invisible), it’s still a little annoying.

    2) This might just be me and my account, but this too has reoccurred after I reformatted my system. The Facebook notifier always says that I have a new event request, despite there not being one. I’ve been on my events page multiple times, and there is nothing there at all.

  39. Steve Said,

    July 2, 2008 @ 10:00 pm

@Thrik - Unable to reproduce bug 1 and we have no other reports of this. You may appear online to yourself but you will appear offline to buddies. Ask someone on your buddy list to confirm this. As for bug #2 it is a bug on their servers. The notification system sometimes falls out of sync with the state of the website but it should clear up within a couple days.

  40. Thrik Said,

    July 3, 2008 @ 9:03 pm

You were right about bug#1 :) I had just assumed what I did because I still showed up as available on my own buddy list (when in reality I was indeed invisible to others).

Also, about bug#2, that was been me ever since I started using Digsby, and that been ever since you guys went public. But if it’s an error on their side, I assume there’s not much you can do about that :)

  42. Shai Said,

    July 4, 2008 @ 7:53 am

any reason why hotmail stopped showing the actual mails in the tray? I see 1 email but no preview is available anymore (couple of days already)

  43. Jason Said,

    July 4, 2008 @ 9:10 am

Hi, I’ve been suggesting for like 4 months now the feature where a new IM appears in the system trey rather than on the toolbar. I asked 4 months ago, and I was ignored, I asked two months after that I was brushed off, but not totally ignored. The very last time I asked (a month ago), you said you were close to implementing it, and I keep hoping with every update that you will add the feature, but I keep getting my hopes shot down every time. This is very, very simple coding to add to a program. It takes 5 minutes. If you need a routine in whatever language you program in to minimize windows to the system trey, I will be more than happy to find one for you. Point being, can we finally address this issue. This is the only reason I use Trillian over Digsby: it’s THAT important. Some people like to use aim, yahoo, etc at work and with bosses over our shoulder, theres no reason for you not to have already included that feature.

  44. Steve Said,

    July 4, 2008 @ 10:53 pm

@Jason - We have a long todo list and we are trying to focus on what has been requested most. Right now that is lowering the RAM usage and improving performance. If we said that we will add the feature that means it went from the “New Ideas” bucket into the Triage to be given a priority. Sorry that it isn’t there yet.

@Shai - Yes. They changed the Hotmail protocol slightly but we have fixed the issue. It will be pushed in the next update. We typically push fixes like this on the same day but we are really trying to focus on wrapping up the optimizations.

@Thrik - We can confirm/deny that it is an error on their side. Email bugs@digsby.com letting us know what the newsfeed error is.

  45. Jason Said,

    July 5, 2008 @ 9:15 pm

That still doesn’t take away from the fact that it takes 5 minutes to do, man. It’s not complicated. Do you know exactly how many people use Trillian JUST BECAUSE you don’t have this option yet? I think you’ll be surprised once you add it.

  46. Codyp Said,

    July 5, 2008 @ 11:44 pm

Wow reading jasons post, some people think the world revolve around them. Its not like you suggest a feature and then bam we’ll put it in there. Some people are really rude.

  47. Sajan Parikh Said,

    July 7, 2008 @ 11:55 pm

Hey guys…I’m a huge fan of digsby. I was kind of used to the whole bajillion updates a day thing.

Things kind of slowed down the past couple weeks…

Looking forward to next update, :).

  48. Mike Said,

    July 8, 2008 @ 10:37 pm

i really hope this past month and something of zero updates result in more than just a lil decrease in RAM usage

  49. Azzy Said,

    July 9, 2008 @ 2:14 pm

Mike, apparently it’ll be a significant decrease. I think Steve’s said that before.

  50. Ganesh Said,

    July 9, 2008 @ 2:14 pm

Is there a way to hide the emails and social networks being displayed in the buddy list? or at least minimize it fully to maximize buddy list screen estate? When having about 5-6 accounts, half my buddy list is unusable.

  51. Steve Said,

    July 9, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

@Ganesh - Yes. Preference > Accounts. By default, it is set to buddy list and icon try. You can change to just be in the icon tray.

@Mike + Sajan - We started using it internally. This build is a major change in the architecture so it resulted in a few new bugs. We are working on them now and will push the build as soon as possible. It will certainly be more than just a lil decrease in RAM usage :)

  52. Tim Said,

    July 9, 2008 @ 10:34 pm

OK, enough of this “coming soon” nonsense which you guys have been saying for the past month or so. Can we PLEASE get an ETA? I don’t mean to sound impatient but I am a huge fan of Digsby and am seriously excited about this update!

  53. Steve Said,

    July 9, 2008 @ 11:11 pm

@Tim - Glad to hear the excitement. It’s hard to give an exact date because we are still discovering bugs in the new build and we don’t want to push a half-finished product. We are trying to push it out as quickly as possible. If I was to take a guess, in about a week.

  54. Kirby Said,

    July 10, 2008 @ 11:42 am

@Steve - You said that almost a month ago too. :D

  55. Lance Said,

    July 10, 2008 @ 1:18 pm

Keep it up guys. Recoding takes way to long. Maybe you should pop a blog note saying what you did to relieve the eager beavers? Can’t wait guys.

  56. Steve Said,

    July 10, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

@Kirby - I know. It ended up taking longer than we originally planned. We found a lot of places to optimize and a lot of memory leaks. The largest part was a major change in the architecture and the bugs which resulted from it are what we are working on now.

I know how you feel. We also got used to weekly builds and will get back to a quicker cycle after this build. It will be worth the wait though. :)

    @Lance - Good call!

  57. paul Said,

    July 12, 2008 @ 10:45 pm

Is it me, or I can’t have my AIM buddy icon. I can see others, but not mine.

Digsby is great and all but if I can’t find a way how to have my buddy icon on AIM, then I think I should mind as well switch back to Pidgin :\

  58. Mike Said,

    August 6, 2008 @ 1:01 pm

Please dont tell me you are going to ditch Digsby because of an AIM icon…
