Build 30 – Woot!

We just pushed an update (Build 30, r15001 r15021 r15034) that introduces several bug fixes and enhancements, including a few significant usability improvements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes:

  • Account Connectivity: Email and social network accounts now retry three times with two second pauses between retries before telling you that it failed to connect. Also, the popups which tell you that it failed to connect are not sticky anymore so you they will go away without you having to click close
  • Facebook Chat: Added typing notifications to Facebook Chat, fixed a bug that caused some incoming messages to not show, and fixed a bug that prevented some international users from logging in
  • New Authorization Dialog: It now shows you what account the add request is for and lets you “Authorize/Add” in addition to just “Authorize” so you can also add the person to your buddy list

Thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. As always, if you have any issues please email bugs@digsby.com. We are running out of catchy blog post titles for the releases. Leave a comment with some ideas.

Update 1: We had a very productive day today so we wanted to push another update. The new release number for Build 30 is r15021. We fixed two bugs that prevented auto-update from working, a bug that prevented the InfoBox from showing, a bug in the new authorization dialog, a bug that caused Jabber accounts to disconnect on roster changes, and a bug that caused the CPU to spin to 100%. Connection lost error popups will now only show once until the connection is reestablished so they are less annoying. Also, auto-updates will not take place on Windows 2000 since the auto-updater does not work on Win2k.

Update 2: We just pushed a tiny update for a bug we introduced that caused Digsby to have trouble reconnecting to our servers after returning from hibernate on laptops.

    Great software...

But I cannot send files to contacts - even just .doc and .pdf and other text files. It always says "Failed to Connect" or "Cancelled by" my contact... when we were both just doing nothing and waiting there for the file to transfer.

Anyone know the solution to this?

I always send files using yahoo messenger and google talk, but with digsby I cant.

    Somebody fix it please....

Great programme but one serious problem about the memory usage (it simply bloats away).
Anyways I am currently using it and hopefully looking fwd to hear good news about memory before I uninstal it.
    thanks for nice interface.
  • calvin
how bout an addition of a "send" button. I have a tablet pc and handwriting input is enabled but if i'm in tablet mode, I can't actually use digsby cuz there's no button for input on the actual messenger. That's the only reason I still have aim installed on my computer...

Give me the final push to uninstall the crap that is AIM off my machine Digsby!
  • @Ruhani Rabin - We have had a few reports of this and it does look like it is because of the MSN protocol version. We will update the protocol in the near future. As for the person with the restart, it is because of a Windows SP2 bug that we triggered that Microsoft fixed with an optional hotfix and also in SP3. We quickly released a new version that avoids the bug completely so if they download and run the latest installer from our website it will not happen again.
  • I loved Digsby .. new concept and a whole lota new things.. But wait.. I've kind of hit the wall with a strange problem. My MSN contacts, they can't see me online.. is that something to do with the MSN protocol versions. BTW they can receive and send messages to me but me myself appear offline to them. I've posted a topic about digsby on my site.. Some other guy saying he have problem after updating such as automatically reboot the computer. But in my case I didn't get hit by that..

Is there anything i can do something about the MSN issue??

I want to dump all my messengers except digsby :D
Digsby should be the Future of all messengers.. Any plans for network notifications like linkedin, Friendster, Tagged, Perfspot or similar sites?

Anyway It's already great job done guys... Thanks
  • Hello Steve,
Thanks for the response. I found a bug related to Language and I'm going to report it soon at the bugs address.
  • @Omi - It should auto-update with just the changes so it is usually 200kb - 1mb. If your auto-update isn't working use Help > About Digsby to make sure you didn't get the update by comparing the version to the one on the blog and then Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log after you log in with a failed auto-update.

@Lisaweb - That is strange. Can you submit a bug report and we will take a look.

@AJ - We try numerous ports to connect including 443 and 80 which works for most people. Email bugs@digsby.com and we can figure out where it is failing for you and if there is anything we can do about it.

@Codyp - Yes, we will make file transfers much more reliable. We have a few more critical bugs and getting the memory down in front of that. Then we will make them solid!

@Brittany - Not sure what you mean. Can you email bugs@digsby.com describing what is going wrong.
  • If you release a new update, we have to download the whole 17MB all the time. So can you make some improvements in the update procedure so that we can just get the update without less pain?

Downloading 17MB from a slow internet connection is really painful. :(
  • Lisaweb
    WEIRD BUG since this update:

In MSN, no one is receiving my messages. I get theirs, but they don't get any of mine. I checked, and both I and them are "online". They all are using Windows Live Messenger, so I'm pretty sure the problem is issuing from Digsby. It's never happened, until right after this last update. And this problem is only occurring with MSN - AOL and Yahoo are working fine.

Well.. guess I'll wait for the next update, and hope it fixes this problem. I'd hate to go back to Astra.
  • AJ
Fabulous client - I love the dock capability!!

Unfortunately however I still cant get Digsby to login from behind my corp firewall. Updates work OK, but login fails with connection lost. The transports connect fine as if I connect the VPN after login MSN and Yahoo continue OK. We dont seem to have a proxy of any kind so I cant try this. Any ideas?
  • Codyp
    Hey,
Are there any plans to make sending files smoother? I have only done so in aim, every time I feel like I am getting some sort of error message. Just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the program. Just wondering if there is any plans to change that, its no big deal.
  • Brittany
When I go to my e-mail from Digsby it won't let me reply to any e-mails!!! Any sugggestions?
  • 2 things: will you be adding LinkedIn support? Also, there is an app called Pronto, used for educational institutions that I’d love to see support for. Hate having to run 2 messengers, even if it will only be for the duration of 1 semester. Continuing education is important, ya know.

Otherwise, I’d like to commend you guys on a job very, very well done. We look forward to future releases and plan on making this a pick of the month in June on our site. Down to a man / woman we’ve all ditched Miranda, Pidgin, Trillian and whatever the hell else we had running in favor of this app. Again, excellent work.
  • Now there's a neat WordPress plug-in for Digsby!
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-digsby/
  • Can you add History.im integration into Digsby for Simkl?
  • @Mas-Tools - We are working on the RAM right now. As for RTL, right click the input area and choose "Right to Left" from the menu. You can also set per-protocol status by choosing "Custom" from the status dropdown.

@Danny - We will add MySpaceIM in the future. As for MSN, disable IM Blocking in AVG and it will finish loading the contact list.

@John Burton - Click Help > About to see if you have the latest version. The CPU spin bugs are mostly resolved except one or two that we are working on right now.
  • Mas-Tool
    Hello,
First i'de like to say the program looks very promising.
It's GUI is amazing, and it operates very good.

Though, few things caught my eye:
    1. I'm connected to icq & msn account and the memory used by digsby is 91MB !
i have only 512mb of ram so it's quite an issue.

    2. In conversation window there is no way to write in Right To Left mode. i tried to hit the right CTRL+SHIFT in order to align the text to right, but it didn't work.
(All Arabic and Hebrew users must use Right To Left)

    3. You should add a status menu for each protocol on the connection list. so that i be invisible on icq, but online on MSN :)

    Thanks for a lovely product.
  • Danny Nabinger
Why not incorporate MySpace IM into Digsby? And I still can't log into Windows Live Messenger but I also have en extremely slow connection. Digsby says it is loading my contact list but an hour later it is still doing that so i just log into the normal Windows Live Messenger.
  • Aithne
haha..finally see a good bug to report..and I checked the blog..just to see it was already fixed! Thanks for helping out us laptop users there guys!! :)
  • when talking with msn friends
I can get messages from others
    bug I cannot reply

    I got following message:
some of the messages you sent may not have been received.
  • johnchan
Very happy that Windows 2000 now does not try to auto-update as it leaves it in a loop.

Does it notify that there is an updated version though, and/or provide a link to download the latest version?

I personally don't mind downloading the update every now and then! Digsby just keeps getting better!!!
  • Codyp
    @Michael Aulia

Thank you for that announcement. I value the info.
  • I'll start using Digsby when it can hide new conversation window or events/notifications on the system tray
  • Why is the CPU usage always in the 40-50% range? Memory is now at 69,000k... but, the CPU is the main concern. Any ideas?
  • Oli
hey. my ram usage is down to 60 mb!
I love Digsby but I NEED a function to make the buddy list transparent. that would be very nice.
  • m0deth
@Steve, thx for the update, looks great, my ram usage as of right now is down by 10mb, maybe something is just working now instead of fighting it, who knows, nice job! still waiting on group chat!

@Ron, not to offend but, it's useless "features" like these being requested that I fear stalls real features from being implemented. I see this alot with new web apps, the dumb trappings get more attention than functionality sometimes. I'm all for great skins that make the whole user experience better, don't get me wrong, as a designer I strive for that type of perfection(sorry I refuse to use the word 'synergy'). However, smilies and winkies are about as important for an IM client to be adopted, as edible underwear. Here's for ergonomics!......once of course all the rest works fine.
  • @new user - we are getting the RAM down right now. :)

@Thrik - We had a few reports and that is Opera specific. We do the equivalent of Start > Run > Type a URL and press enter. That launches the default browser.
  • new user
Im using Digsby with one AIM account, one Yahoo Instant Messenger account, one Gmail account, and one Facebook account.

My task manager is telling me Digsby is using up 102 MB of memory. Anyway to lower that? Doesnt that seem like an awful lot for an IM client (i know its not just IM etc).

    thoughts?
  • Thrik
    Dude, nice 8-)

Okay, while I'm at it: I seem to have found another bug, it could just be my browser however.

I'm using the Opera 9.50 beta as the default on my system. Whenever I click on a Facebook link through Digsby it will open up in Digsby fine, but whenever I try a Gmail link through Digsby it will refuse to open UNLESS my browser is completely closed down.

    Any ideas?
  • @michelle - We all add other protocols including MySpaceIM in the future... still getting the last of the kinks out and getting the memory usage down... then back to features!

@Manic - There is a ticket to look at this. Only a few people have reported this so it's hard to narrow down since it just like flaky internet access

@Thrik - Haven't heard of this bug yet. Was able to reproduce it and it is now fixed - will be pushed in the next update. It looks like when you tell Facebook to make visibility=false you no longer get buddy list updates. Facebook Chat will ignore the invisible state completely from now on since that status doesn't exist on the FBChat protocol.

@Sinestro - We will add per-character formatting in the future. As for links we will add this but for now you can paste the URL.
  • stud_muffler
    well, how about Sametime protocol?
And you really need to bring the memory consumption down!

    thanks
  • michelle maria
i love digsby and i've gotten my friends hooked on it as well.. but they want to know if there will ever be support for myspaceim..?
  • Manic
Still have the repeated AIM disconnects.
  • Thrik
Just another question for y'all, I tried asking somewhere on the boards, but I guess you all missed it. Or it's quite possible that I missed it, seeing as how responsive you guys are :)

Whenever I set myself to invisible, Facebook Chat will not log in properly. I know this is probably because there is no option for invisibility within Facebook Chat, and I wouldn't mind this except for I cannot log in invisibly to other chat services.

So I guess my question would be, are there plans on letting the user choose specific statuses per account? If there's a thread on this somewhere, I'd be happy if you'd post a link, and sorry for the inconvenience.
  • ififthelement
you guys are great. keep up the good job! thanks for the updates I keep getting regularly without even bothering myself anymore. Thanks once again.
  • user
at least ask to user whether he/she wants to update setup.

S/w downloads a whole mre than 5 mb and says can't connect .....

    really worst.........
  • Sinestro
Two important and easy features are still missing: the ability to selectively format words or characters within an IM, and an insert hyperlink button.
  • @Kerry + Arshad - No issues here and no other reports of it. It may be a network issue getting to facebook.com
  • @JNudda - down for me most of the day too :(
  • As the user "Kerry" pointed out above, there is a new issue with Facebook Chat not letting you connect ("Connection Failed" error). This only became an issue with the update to Build 15021 (no issue with Build 15001).

Hopefully this will be rectified soon.
  • JNudda
nm. jk. its working now. ha.
  • JNudda
Is twitter working for yall? Hasn't been working at all today.
  • Kev
    Steve,

I really think (after you get the memory utilization down and other optimizations) that your only competition is going to be Trillian Astra (when it comes out) - they seem to be doing some pretty insane things with your browser. Have you checked it out? Seems a lot of what they're doing is linking IMs for group features that aren't being offered by anyone (that I know of)
  • Flavio
Great work as always guys :) And another smooth update.

    Thanks!
  • Morgan
    Linux Native Client Please!!!
  • @all - pushed a new build... update description in the post above.
  • Roger
    it's w00t, not Woot.
  • I've fallen in love with this program.

Build 31 - How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love Digsby.
  • Ron
now if you can get the smilies to work so they show up for my friends and also too bad you couldn't get winks and kiwee to work with this unit.
It is all good if you like the bland but I enjoy msn and yahoo for the smilies and winks and all the fun things while talking to friends which you don't have here.
  • @nothing4me - Just start typing a name and it will search through the non-collapsed groups

@Cymagen - We will add other protocols in the future including MySpaceIM
  • Monroe
Build 31 - Digsby, Now with Group Chat!
  • nothing4me
WE NEED A CONTACT LIST SEARCH.

    Edit: shortened
  • When will we get Myspace chat? Ever?
  • @Kerry - Email bugs@digsby.com if you continue to have problems or use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log.
  • M
how about adding support for bebo?
  • I'm happy about the incoming message on FB chat - it was starting to be annoying with "I just told you..." or confusion ensuing the lack of messages going through.

There is, however, a problem that is now preventing me from using FB Chat. I've reported this on the thread, reported it as a bug report - it's not letting me sign in, saying Authentication error, so I DO have to use the real fb chat. Quite a drag.
  • Bubbaloo
Any chance of invisibility for Google Talk sometime soon? It sucks when you go invisible, but GTalk just goes away.
  • @bubazoo - You need to add Facebook as both an IM account and a social network account. The two are completely separate.
  • Yeah, my sweetie is waiting for a Mac version as well. I too am anxiously awaiting more skins to pop up, but I realized those probably won't be out until digsby gets out of beta. right now there still in the beta stage and changes to the interface could still occur, so there is no real use in adding user-customizable skins right now, IMHO anyway.

I too was getting annoyed with the twitter staying connected bug. but what I don't understand, is why your facebook contacts aren't in with your other contacts? I have to actually goto the facebook website and click at the bottom. The only reason I know facebook is connected at all, is the little icon at the bottom telling me how many new messages I have. it doesn't let me chat to 'em from within digsby.
  • robot
    Great job guys.

new features = cool, but still need to fix some basics: text formatting a selection of text instead of always formatting the entire text. i.e. hitting bold will bold the entire message not a selection.

links. clicking on a link sometimes shoots a partial url at the browser.

you know them well...get to it.
  • I hope Linux support is coming soon...I feel so left out. :'(
  • @Scotty - We will add per-character formatting in the future. Right now it is per-message only.
  • Scotty
One issue I noticed is when trying to use italics, bold, or underline, it does it for the entire text that I'm writing, instead of only the word or two I intend to change.
    Otherwise, looking good!
  • @Bed - we will add group chat support very soon.. it is almost at the top of the todo list now :)

@Brooke - Make sure you are not running MySpaceIM. Try restarting to clear the session.

@Schubling - Yes, we will add more languages to spell check and make Digsby available in multiple languages in the near future!

@Law - We are working on the mac version but it will be longer than a week or two. You can run it in VMWare fusion if you miss it a lot.

@TCJ - Working on getting the RAM usage down right now.
  • Ben
I was just wondering, the only thing holding me back from fully switching over from pidgin is support for chat. Will you will enable chatroom support sometime?
  • Brooke
After I updated, myspace social network keeps disconnecting and saying I've signed on in another location.
  • Schubling
    Hi!
    Really nice work ;)
Will you soon add more languages for the spellcheck ?
    Regards!
  • Law
    Again, excellent client - thanks!!

Out of interest, how close to finishing the mac version are you? I don't want to be digsby-deprived when my macbookpro turns up in a week or two! :)
  • Virtual Steve
Build 31 - Who is it for?
Build 32 - All the lonely people
Build 33 - Where do they all come from?
Build 34 - All the lonely people
Build 35 - Where do they all belong?

This, of course, is from the classic lyrics to "Eleanor Digsby".

Oh wait, that's Eleanor Rigby - nevermind.

But everyone does belong on Digsby.
  • TCJ
Google Reader Integration is a must! Please!!! Try to do it.

    More social networks: hi5!

It's an error depending on a web browser as firefox (heavy program!), for example, when I press "compose" in the gmail tab, it could be great to open a little window to compose the mail, I don't know, maybe some adobe air - via plug in - integration could be what digsby needs to be absolutely fantastic. I tested ReadAir (an app based on adobe air) a few hours ago, and I'd love to see something like that integrated with digsby. And windows borders are still the ugly xp ones, any change in mind?

Memory usage... 95000 K... too much!

By now, thanks a lot for developing disgby!
  • preetham
grt goin' gys....the best chat client i've used!!!!
  • @Mofoo - LOL!
  • Mofoo
Build 31 - Just like Mom used to make
Build 32 - YASADU - yet another sweet ass digsby update
Build 33 ... From the future!
    Build 34 - OMGWTFBBQ!
    Build 35 - It's a fact - digbsy is your friend
    Build 36 - powered by a cat-toast device (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Murphy%27s_law_application_for_antigravitatory_cats)
  • I take that back.
  • Luki
    its left or right ctrl+a
  • Sven
Hi Steve, just to let you know that with the latest and the previous update the automatic update worked fine. The "infinite loop" problem did not come up again.
  • @Luki - what is the shortcut on your keyboard to select all text?
  • Zidane
    Like the add/authorise option!! :D
  • Luki
Had to download it manually from website and install - updated then.
Still have bug with using rightalt+a - should produce polish ą char - but digsby is selecting all typed text and its pissing me off :D
Thanx for fixing FBchat thingy, can login at last now :)
  • Roly
    Catchy blog post titles:

    And then there was Digsby
Four score and seven Digsby ago...
    DIGSBY TIER LIST
i am a digsby. i ahev a long neck and i pick fish out of the water w/ my beak. if you dont repost this comment on 10 other pages i will fly into your kitchen tonight and make a mess of your pots and pans
DIGSBY MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU USE IT?
  • @Janne - Use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log.
  • Janne
Is it only me who cant connect to yahoo mail, I can connect via webpage but not with digsby.
btw, it was booth previous build and this one.
  • @Ray - We tweaked a few blog preferences and it came back... even with extensive caching and a dedicated server, everyone hitting the blog at once is making it hard to keep it online. I think with the new settings it will handle the load next time we push an update.
  • Luki
    Did not updated auto too...
  • Pär B
i really like this update. Just a week or so after i suggested the authorize/add option to be added it appeared :) If it was because of me I don't know but I do love the quick response time and rapid development of the client.

Keep up the good work guys
  • adam
great application, but the one feature that I would REALLY enjoy is to be able to alphabetize my away message names. I'm not a program but it seems that feature wouldn't be that hard to implement. I know you can drag and drop them, but why not have them automatically arrange by name? Yes I have alot of a way messages.
  • Ray
    This program is so amazing...
I log in, and about 3 minutes later I get told to restart so it will update... how cool is that? I love the little announcements you guys send us, lol.

I tried accesing your website and blog after updating, and it timed out... I think EVERYONE tried to come here all at once, lol.

    Another idea for the title...

    Build 31 - World Domination!
(based on how popular/how much press digsby is getting!)

    -Ray
  • elgringo
Thanks a lot, i love your product !
  • Great. No more lost Twitter connections. :)
  • J
Build 31 - All your base are belong to Digsby!
  • @Josh - we will add more skins in the future as well as a skinning API and a website where you can download user made skins
  • SonicHedgehog
    @Josh: Make your own! ;)

But this is a good idea, maybe I will made a skin some day ... :)
  • Thrik
Thanks for fixing that Facebook bug, it was driving me batty. :)

I almost resorted to using the real FB chat. o_o
  • J
    Build 31 - Dig(sby) my life baby!
  • @Benji - It should update automatically but the files may not have propagated through Amazon S3 fully. Try in a few minutes and if it still doesn't work use Help > Send Bug Report and mention that the update failed.

@Brandon - It was synchronizing preferences with our servers and everyone logging in at the same time made it a little slower than usual. However, it pointed out a bottle neck we don't see regularly and we are working on it now.
  • Jacob Parker
    Nice
  • Hey Digsby. Thanks for the update!

Is there anyway for ya'll to produce a skin that matches the Adobe Air feel? Such as Twhirl etc? The skins Digsby currently has still reside within the ugly windows menu bar and borders. Is there any way to make a more attractive and standalone skin?
    Thanks!
  • @terrorbite
    Stop acting like an idiot!
  • Benji
I have restarted digsby twice and not received an update. Is this a manual update?
  • Brandon
Mine just updated, and it took about 1.5 minutes to login, seeing a screen that said "loading skin". It works fine, it just took a while to actually login after I pressed login.
  • James Matthews
