Build 30 - Woot!
We just pushed an update (Build 30, r15001 r15021 r15034) that introduces several bug fixes and enhancements, including a few significant usability improvements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes:
- Account Connectivity: Email and social network accounts now retry three times with two second pauses between retries before telling you that it failed to connect. Also, the popups which tell you that it failed to connect are not sticky anymore so you they will go away without you having to click close
- Facebook Chat: Added typing notifications to Facebook Chat, fixed a bug that caused some incoming messages to not show, and fixed a bug that prevented some international users from logging in
- New Authorization Dialog: It now shows you what account the add request is for and lets you “Authorize/Add” in addition to just “Authorize” so you can also add the person to your buddy list
Thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. As always, if you have any issues please email bugs@digsby.com. We are running out of catchy blog post titles for the releases. Leave a comment with some ideas.
Update 1: We had a very productive day today so we wanted to push another update. The new release number for Build 30 is r15021. We fixed two bugs that prevented auto-update from working, a bug that prevented the InfoBox from showing, a bug in the new authorization dialog, a bug that caused Jabber accounts to disconnect on roster changes, and a bug that caused the CPU to spin to 100%. Connection lost error popups will now only show once until the connection is reestablished so they are less annoying. Also, auto-updates will not take place on Windows 2000 since the auto-updater does not work on Win2k.
Update 2: We just pushed a tiny update for a bug we introduced that caused Digsby to have trouble reconnecting to our servers after returning from hibernate on laptops.

Hey Digsby. Thanks for the update!
Is there anyway for ya’ll to produce a skin that matches the Adobe Air feel? Such as Twhirl etc? The skins Digsby currently has still reside within the ugly windows menu bar and borders. Is there any way to make a more attractive and standalone skin?
Thanks!

@Benji - It should update automatically but the files may not have propagated through Amazon S3 fully. Try in a few minutes and if it still doesn’t work use Help > Send Bug Report and mention that the update failed.
@Brandon - It was synchronizing preferences with our servers and everyone logging in at the same time made it a little slower than usual. However, it pointed out a bottle neck we don’t see regularly and we are working on it now.

great application, but the one feature that I would REALLY enjoy is to be able to alphabetize my away message names. I’m not a program but it seems that feature wouldn’t be that hard to implement. I know you can drag and drop them, but why not have them automatically arrange by name? Yes I have alot of a way messages.

Google Reader Integration is a must! Please!!! Try to do it.
More social networks: hi5!
It’s an error depending on a web browser as firefox (heavy program!), for example, when I press “compose” in the gmail tab, it could be great to open a little window to compose the mail, I don’t know, maybe some adobe air - via plug in - integration could be what digsby needs to be absolutely fantastic. I tested ReadAir (an app based on adobe air) a few hours ago, and I’d love to see something like that integrated with digsby. And windows borders are still the ugly xp ones, any change in mind?
Memory usage… 95000 K… too much!

Yeah, my sweetie is waiting for a Mac version as well. I too am anxiously awaiting more skins to pop up, but I realized those probably won’t be out until digsby gets out of beta. right now there still in the beta stage and changes to the interface could still occur, so there is no real use in adding user-customizable skins right now, IMHO anyway.
I too was getting annoyed with the twitter staying connected bug. but what I don’t understand, is why your facebook contacts aren’t in with your other contacts? I have to actually goto the facebook website and click at the bottom. The only reason I know facebook is connected at all, is the little icon at the bottom telling me how many new messages I have. it doesn’t let me chat to ‘em from within digsby.
Steve Said,
May 21, 2008 @ 2:28 pm
@bubazoo - You need to add Facebook as both an IM account and a social network account. The two are completely separate.

There is, however, a problem that is now preventing me from using FB Chat. I’ve reported this on the thread, reported it as a bug report - it’s not letting me sign in, saying Authentication error, so I DO have to use the real fb chat. Quite a drag.

I really think (after you get the memory utilization down and other optimizations) that your only competition is going to be Trillian Astra (when it comes out) - they seem to be doing some pretty insane things with your browser. Have you checked it out? Seems a lot of what they’re doing is linking IMs for group features that aren’t being offered by anyone (that I know of)

Just another question for y’all, I tried asking somewhere on the boards, but I guess you all missed it. Or it’s quite possible that I missed it, seeing as how responsive you guys are
Whenever I set myself to invisible, Facebook Chat will not log in properly. I know this is probably because there is no option for invisibility within Facebook Chat, and I wouldn’t mind this except for I cannot log in invisibly to other chat services.
So I guess my question would be, are there plans on letting the user choose specific statuses per account? If there’s a thread on this somewhere, I’d be happy if you’d post a link, and sorry for the inconvenience.

thanks
Steve Said,
May 22, 2008 @ 9:59 am
@michelle - We all add other protocols including MySpaceIM in the future… still getting the last of the kinks out and getting the memory usage down… then back to features!
@Manic - There is a ticket to look at this. Only a few people have reported this so it’s hard to narrow down since it just like flaky internet access
@Thrik - Haven’t heard of this bug yet. Was able to reproduce it and it is now fixed - will be pushed in the next update. It looks like when you tell Facebook to make visibility=false you no longer get buddy list updates. Facebook Chat will ignore the invisible state completely from now on since that status doesn’t exist on the FBChat protocol.
@Sinestro - We will add per-character formatting in the future. As for links we will add this but for now you can paste the URL.
Thrik Said,

Okay, while I’m at it: I seem to have found another bug, it could just be my browser however.
I’m using the Opera 9.50 beta as the default on my system. Whenever I click on a Facebook link through Digsby it will open up in Digsby fine, but whenever I try a Gmail link through Digsby it will refuse to open UNLESS my browser is completely closed down.

Im using Digsby with one AIM account, one Yahoo Instant Messenger account, one Gmail account, and one Facebook account.
My task manager is telling me Digsby is using up 102 MB of memory. Anyway to lower that? Doesnt that seem like an awful lot for an IM client (i know its not just IM etc).
thoughts?
Steve Said,
May 22, 2008 @ 12:24 pm
@new user - we are getting the RAM down right now.
@Thrik - We had a few reports and that is Opera specific. We do the equivalent of Start > Run > Type a URL and press enter. That launches the default browser.

@Steve, thx for the update, looks great, my ram usage as of right now is down by 10mb, maybe something is just working now instead of fighting it, who knows, nice job! still waiting on group chat!
@Ron, not to offend but, it’s useless “features” like these being requested that I fear stalls real features from being implemented. I see this alot with new web apps, the dumb trappings get more attention than functionality sometimes. I’m all for great skins that make the whole user experience better, don’t get me wrong, as a designer I strive for that type of perfection(sorry I refuse to use the word ’synergy’). However, smilies and winkies are about as important for an IM client to be adopted, as edible underwear. Here’s for ergonomics!……once of course all the rest works fine.

Hello,
First i’de like to say the program looks very promising.
It’s GUI is amazing, and it operates very good.
Though, few things caught my eye:
1. I’m connected to icq & msn account and the memory used by digsby is 91MB !
i have only 512mb of ram so it’s quite an issue.
2. In conversation window there is no way to write in Right To Left mode. i tried to hit the right CTRL+SHIFT in order to align the text to right, but it didn’t work.
(All Arabic and Hebrew users must use Right To Left)
3. You should add a status menu for each protocol on the connection list. so that i be invisible on icq, but online on MSN
Thanks for a lovely product.
Steve Said,
May 23, 2008 @ 8:10 am
@Mas-Tools - We are working on the RAM right now. As for RTL, right click the input area and choose “Right to Left” from the menu. You can also set per-protocol status by choosing “Custom” from the status dropdown.
@Danny - We will add MySpaceIM in the future. As for MSN, disable IM Blocking in AVG and it will finish loading the contact list.
@John Burton - Click Help > About to see if you have the latest version. The CPU spin bugs are mostly resolved except one or two that we are working on right now.

Otherwise, I’d like to commend you guys on a job very, very well done. We look forward to future releases and plan on making this a pick of the month in June on our site. WEIRD BUG since this update:
In MSN, no one is receiving my messages. I get theirs, but they don’t get any of mine. I checked, and both I and them are “online”. They all are using Windows Live Messenger, so I’m pretty sure the problem is issuing from Digsby. It’s never happened, until right after this last update. And this problem is only occurring with MSN - AOL and Yahoo are working fine.
Well.. guess I’ll wait for the next update, and hope it fixes this problem. I’d hate to go back to Astra.

If you release a new update, we have to download the whole 17MB all the time. So can you make some improvements in the update procedure so that we can just get the update without less pain?
Downloading 17MB from a slow internet connection is really painful.
Steve Said,
May 26, 2008 @ 9:25 am
@Omi - It should auto-update with just the changes so it is usually 200kb - 1mb. If your auto-update isn’t working use Help > About Digsby to make sure you didn’t get the update by comparing the version to the one on the blog and then Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log after you log in with a failed auto-update.
@Lisaweb - That is strange. Can you submit a bug report and we will take a look.
@AJ - We try numerous ports to connect including 443 and 80 which works for most people. Email bugs@digsby.com and we can figure out where it is failing for you and if there is anything we can do about it.
@Codyp - Yes, we will make file transfers much more reliable. We have a few more critical bugs and getting the memory down in front of that. Then we will make them solid!
@Brittany - Not sure what you mean. Can you email bugs@digsby.com describing what is going wrong.

Thanks for the response. I found a bug related to Language and I’m going to report it soon at the bugs address.

I loved Digsby .. new concept and a whole lota new things.. But wait.. I’ve kind of hit the wall with a strange problem. My MSN contacts, they can’t see me online.. is that something to do with the MSN protocol versions. BTW they can receive and send messages to me but me myself appear offline to them. I’ve posted a topic about digsby on my site.. Some other guy saying he have problem after updating such as automatically reboot the computer. But in my case I didn’t get hit by that..
Is there anything i can do something about the MSN issue??
I want to dump all my messengers except digsby
Digsby should be the Future of all messengers.. Any plans for network notifications like linkedin, Friendster, Tagged, Perfspot or similar sites?
Anyway It’s already great job done guys… Thanks

@Ruhani Rabin - We have had a few reports of this and it does look like it is because of the MSN protocol version. We will update the protocol in the near future. As for the person with the restart, it is because of a Windows SP2 bug that we triggered that Microsoft fixed with an optional hotfix and also in SP3. We quickly released a new version that avoids the bug completely so if they download and run the latest installer from our website it will not happen again.

how bout an addition of a “send” button. I have a tablet pc and handwriting input is enabled but if i’m in tablet mode, I can’t actually use digsby cuz there’s no button for input on the actual messenger. That’s the only reason I still have aim installed on my computer…
Give me the final push to uninstall the crap that is AIM off my machine Digsby!

Great programme but one serious problem about the memory usage (it simply bloats away).
Anyways I am currently using it and hopefully looking fwd to hear good news about memory before I uninstal it.
