What Social Networks Do You Want?

The community run website at digsbies.org is holding a poll asking what social network protocols we should add next and we thought we would promote the poll a bit to get some insight:

http://digsbies.org/site/node/189

On another note, we have a new build right around the corner with a number of bug fixes including docking fixes and HTTP proxy fixes that are causing some people’s email accounts to not work properly. We also have something special planned for this build ;)

Last.fm and Flickr would be really cool.

Also, have you guys thought of using is.gd instead of snipr.com for he URL shortener? The API documentation is available for anyone.

    Thanks for all your work!

any plans on incorporating the new facebook chat into digsby? It wasn’t part of the poll and you already support facebook, but the chat feature is new.

Unfortunately, Facebook chat is currently closed to third-party developers =(

Something special? Please tell me it’s Digsby now portable so I can cut over permanently.

I’m impressed with Digsby, but the memory usage (I’ve seen it as high as 175megs) is prohibitive for my uses. When it’s around 40-60 megs regularly, at the highest, I will be tempted to switch full time.

  8. Brandon Said,

    April 28, 2008 @ 10:02 pm

Stephen, I have the same problem, that also prevents me from using Firefox. So many apps have memory usage sky rocketing. At least Digsby is in beta, so they have an excuse, Firefox does not.

Great program Digsby is, I’m interested what this special surprise is.

Honestly for me I’d like to see memory consumption way way way down before adding new stuff. I mean Digsby actually consumes more memory than Lotus Sametime 8 and that is the most bloated chat client I’ve ever used.

If I had to have a new social network added though it would be tumblr or linkedin.

A plugin engine would be nice as well for us developer types out there :)

Could it be Facebook messenger? The special plan?
    I voted for:
    -Last.fm
    -Digg
    -Flickr

Hopefully, the “something special”, is multi-person chats (or conferences in Yahoo). I can’t start using Digsby until this feature is there. And I know others want it as well, cause it’s the highest rated feature request on the Wishlist. Please oh please oh please give us multi-person conferences.

  16. Steve Said,

@Patrick Tulskie - Agreed! This is a poll that the Digsby community put up and we are just helping promote it so we gather more feedback. We are working on reducing the RAM usage right now and these suggestions are for the future.

    @Brandon

I agree that Firefox is a little crazy, but then again it is a web browser — I get a lot of functionality, and there is a lot going on in the background when it comes to a web browser. FF3 fixes a huge chunk of the memory problems, which should be huge.

In regards to Digsby, getting that memory usage down will probably be tied to the Mac and Linux (separating from the Microsoft Visual C++ Library). At least, that is my hope so I can run it on my Ubuntu install, and have it under 60 megs!

    April 29, 2008 @ 8:43 pm

Since the comments have trailed off a bit from social networks, I won’t feel so bad about asking for Unicode support in the Listening To status. Winamp and iTunes both support Unicode, and Digsby itself seems to anyways, so if those dots get connected, I’d be that much happier. :)

I tested unicode by entering the following Japanese text as my status: せいなるくさびに、あらがってみせろ。シャイニングバインド! It worked just fine, and it appeared in my brother’s AIM 6 without any hitches.

Kind of a side question: Is it just because the message styles weren’t made for Digsby or do all of them shrink the buddy icons badly (distorted edges)? It seems that my buddy list is fine with icon resizing, but whenever I talk to people the icons in the message windows are ugly :/.

  21. Chris Alta Said,

    April 30, 2008 @ 3:09 am

I’d love the ability to direct connect via AIM and discrete text formatting such as italicizing a single word in a sentence rather than the whole word.
But anyway my vote for the next social would be Xanga I suppose.

Keep it up though, you guys are absolutely ridiculous when it comes to updating and communicating with your needy audience. It’s impressive. Good luck to you guys!

Any ideas when the new build is to be released? The current one keeps freezing my computer momentarily and causes my CPU to run at 100% for lengthy periods of time. I’ve had the program since it first became publicly available, and this is the first time I’ve had trouble with it.

  23. Brandon Said,

    April 30, 2008 @ 10:54 am

Blaming the Microsoft Visual C++ Library for memory usage is lame.

Web browsers also shouldn’t take up 400mb of ram with 2 tabs, digg.com and neowin.net just seem to kill firefox 2. 3 is a lot better, that is for sure.

  24. Steve Said,

    April 30, 2008 @ 11:18 am

@Scott - hopefully today or tomorrow. We are also working on the CPU freeze bugs right now.

@Chris Alta - we will add per character formatting in the future.

@Jay - we can do better on smoothing them out. They resize in some message styles better than they do in others.

@Trent - I’m pretty sure it is the winamp API that is the blocker on that one… we can’t get unicode out of it :(

This is probably going way beyond the Social Network idea and probably not possible, but I’d really love to see some integration with vBulletin forums. If you look at their new version ( http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249460 ) their forums are already starting to look like social networks.

I currently use one particular site that uses vbulletin heavily and it would be absolutely fantastic to be able to put my buddy list there into digsby so I could see who’s online over on my favourite forum without having to go over to the site and click on “buddy list”. Even just the most basic integration of the buddy list alone in Digby would be a great feature - Clicking on a name could open up the main website PM window so it’s not as if the whole PM system would have to be accessible to Digsby.

I’m sure it would be a big selling feature for vbulletin as well if they worked with you to make it possible

Please fix the memory issues and bugs first. We don’t need 10 million more services. We need the current services working flawlessly (and this means taking up less than 100mb of ram…).

Keep up the good work. I anticipate each new release as Digsby seems to get better and better (well, minus memory issues).

Also…any idea on Wine compatibility in the future? Latest builds dont’ work 100% anymore :(.

    Thanks again :)

Hi, I was just wondering if it would be possible to have Xbox Live support, so you can see people currently playing games online on their Xbox 360s. There are separate clients for it floating around at the moment, but I think having it integrated into Digsby could be pretty sweet.

I’d like support for ning, linkedin, plaxo, yahoogroups and myspace to allow post bulletins or comments from within digsby.

However, I agree with the others on memory usage, digsby uses way too much ram right now, along with a browser such as firefox or flock. I hope firefox and flock can do something about the memory drain as well.

    Thanks!

I’d love if you’d add stickam.com to your list of social networks on Digsby! I have the hardest time remembering to check my gmail and look for updates. Since i have my digsby up at all times, i’ll get my new messages or new comments alert right away, and it would be a wonderful relief to alot. It’d be well appreciated.

I’d love to see Friendfeed and maybe even LinkedIn added.

But what I’d like to see the most is the inline spell checking on the Twitter and Facebook status update fields. Firefox has spoiled me and I have gotten horrible at catching my own typos.
