Build 26 - More Digsby, Less Bugs

We just pushed a small update (Build 26, r14192) that has a few bug fixes that we wanted to get out there before the weekend. For those of you who already updated to Build 25 it is also the first test of the new auto-update system. As always, you can read the entire list of changes on our Change Log. Most notably:

  • Fixed a few Twitter bugs including the “black infobox bug” and the “endless popups bug”
  • Fixed a bug that prevented some users from connecting to MSN Protocol
  • We also added log statements to help us find the rest of the cases where this may happen if any remain

    Fantastic.

I’ll definitely give this a whirl. I hope we get the option to turn off the info boxes when we hover over a screen name in Build 27.

    Great job so far.

How could I get this update?
I downloaded from http://www.digsby.com/download.php?os=win, but at menu Help > About Digsby, it is read Build 13706. It seems that Digsby has no autoupdater, right? So, where can I download this update?
    - thanks -

    * Fixed a few Twitter bugs including the “black infobox bug” and the “endless popups bug”

The “endless popups bug” seems to be fixed.
I never suffered from a “black infobox”.

I do however still suffer from a “BLANK infobox”:
The Twitter “Timeline” works fine in the infobox, everything else (Replies, Directs etc.) does not and remains completely empty!

I think this update may have fixed my SNAC error whenever I started Digsby.

Tried to auto update to 26 and downloaded everything ok but had a glitch on install. When I would attempt to run it would not launch. Had to reinstall the application but everything seems good again now.

    @yonatan:

Try restarting Digsby. The auto-updater *is* functional, but the update may not have been pushed yet (check for IMs from Digsby HQ). Anyway, I restarted after being notified of the update and I’m now looking at “build 14192″ in the Help -> About. Good luck!

    Cheers,

    @yonatan:

Digsby does have an auto-updater. You just have to restart Digsby to get it. :) Upon restart, after you go to login, it will begin to update. It doesn’t update while you are on it.

  11. AdamMcD Said,

    April 12, 2008 @ 1:13 am

yonatan, digsby does have an auto-updated … just restart digsby.

I had issues with updating to this latest build. The error message follows:

    “Critical error in restoring digsby.exe.
Try renaming digsby.clone to digsby.exe. A reinstall might be needed.

The system cannot find the file specified.”

Renaming the .clone seemed to have resolved the issue but just a heads up. Also, can you have the build number listed in Digsby > About and on your website relate in some way? :)

I was wondering if you devs @ Digsby were planning on adding the Chat feature to Digsby anytime soon? Please post some information about this as soon as possible, I’m a big time fan - I just wish you had chat abilities.

When starting Digsby this morning the update to Build 26, r14192 was installed (before I had yesterday’s r14158 running). Since then I’m in a infinite loop with Digsby starting and displaying the message “Digsby needs to restart” after 15 seconds. I close the program via the “X” in the upper right corner but after restart it’s the same.

    Greetings from Germany,
    Sven

    OS: Windows XP, SP2 (German)

  15. lupus Said,

Digsby doesn’t startup properly now for me. After downloading the update it just says “Digsby needs to restart”, but nothing happens.
    Any ideas?

  16. Steven G. Said,

@lupus - do a fresh install and keep track of how later updates go, smooth, errors.. etc.

Well Digsby worked perfectly before however after the update MSN messenger keeps crashing…

It takes a very long time to load the contact list and afterwards it disconnects…

  19. yonatan Said,

I restart my Digsby, it downloaded the update. But my internet connection was down and it interupted the download process. I restart my digsby, but it can’t. I don’t know why. I uninstalled the digsby and reinstall it.
I think it will be better if we have a choice, if I wanna update the digsby automatically or, manually. Just like autoupdate in Windows. In Windows we can set it automatic download the updates or we just download them manually at http://www.microsoft.com.

Manual Twitter update no longer works.

  21. Guster33 Said,

    April 12, 2008 @ 2:18 pm

it would be great to be able to disable the autoupdate feature in the sign in screen, it’s giving me problems and it would be cool to let the user decide wether to update or not.

  22. Steve Said,

    April 12, 2008 @ 2:21 pm

@cn1 - we will add group chat in the very near future… we want to optimize performance and knock out a few more bugs first

@Sven + lupus - sent you an email to try to figure out what the cause is

@Kidman - can you submit a diagnostic log using Help > Send Bug Report. We haven’t gotten any other reports of this so I’m not sure what the cause could be without taking a look at the diagnostics

  23. Steve Said,

    April 12, 2008 @ 2:23 pm

@GeoffGirardin - you may be hitting rate limits. You can only do 70 requests per hour to the Twitter service. We currently don’t notify you of when it happens but now that we added the ability to manually refresh we should.

@Guster33 - we will most likely do this in the future but right now Digsby is an early beta so it really helps us in the development process. New bugs are fixed weekly so we would get a lot of reports of already fixed issues. If the auto-updater is giving you problems then we need to fix the problems :) Send us an email at bugs@digsby.com

I’m really liking this software, but I just can’t use it yet because it doesn’t have everything I need. Would it be possible to allow Digsby to read/use/import logs from other programs? (like pidgin/trillion) And, I would love to see IRC support added.

  26. sylv3rblade Said,

    I love you guys.
You’re like pushing updates almost daily that I’m starting to feel bad about my review =_=. Anyway I agree with the guy above, IRC (+ flawless File Transfer) support would be awesome.

  27. shunith Said,

    Steve…

Had a problem with the updater…

1/ Digsby failed to connect after the update

    2/ Restarting Digsby didn’t work.

3/ Rebooting and restarting Digsby didn’t work.

So, uninstalled Digsby… didn’t post a comment… downloaded the latest version from the website… reinstalled… all seems ok now.

    This is for your info.

    Cheers!

  32. Graeme Said,

Closing the buddy list with the X icon still doesn’t save the window position. This was a bug introduced in the last patch (or at least it didn’t happen to me before then).

  33. Nina Said,

I did the update after last week’s beta test install for the udater. I got the following error:

    Error 2
    “Critical error in restoring digsby.exe.
Try renaming digsby.clone to digsby.exe. A reinstall might be needed.

The system cannot find the file specified.”

I went to click the program itself and the .exe file had been altered. I renamed it to Digsby.exe and the program did not start. I downloaded the latest build from the website and it seems to be working fine.

Autoupdate to 14192 appeared successful over the weekend. System restart this morning gave me the same message as AdamMcD earlier.

    “Critical error in restoring digsby.exe.
Try renaming digsby.clone to digsby.exe. A reinstall might be needed.

Rename of digsby.clone to digsby.exe fixed the issue.

+1 on the MSN connection problems. I’m not aware of any log output I can provide though. Switched from Trillian (never going back. Digsby rocks) but they did have a convenient log window that could be called up to watch the connection process. Just saying, wink wink.

Digsby rocks! I’ve told all my friends about it. three things:

    -add skype at some point?
-add the ability for me to set custom buddy icons for a contact
-add ability to alert when a specific person signs on as opposed to universal option?

    Thanks!

What happened to the Twitter update posting box? I’m not sure how to post to Twitter via Digsby after this update.

  42. Mike Said,

    April 14, 2008 @ 3:02 pm

@Dave - You should be able to set a new status in a few ways:

    - Double click on the twitter icon
    - Click on ‘update’ next to your status at the top of the timeline
    - Right click the twitter icon and choose ‘New Tweet’

yo, i just wanted to say you guys are doing a great job! i’ve been watching so many developers of IM’s and they all look dead for months. but not with digsby, this looks like a great program and you can see that the dev’s are working on it, i like that :).

i know digsby is new but i have something on my wishlist for the next build, okay okay i’ll give you time for 3 build’s or i will… i don’t know what i will do, so just do what i want :D.

the things on my wishlist are that the passwords are stored on your servers, or the hash or whatever, something of my password, and that is what makes me feel unconftable. i don’t care what experts say, i only trust myself (just like scarface :D). whatever, it would be great to have a option where the users can decide where the password is saved. my english isn’t that good as you probably noticed, what i am trying to say is that i don’t want my password to be saved anywhere except my local computer and the icq computers. because i don’t trust any other pc’s/servers even if they just have a “part” of my password - sorry :).

the other thing is, i would like to see a nicer skin/layout for digsby. i know i know digsby is new to the game but i think the feel & look of a program does alot to get new users, so i count that with the same worth like the functions! if you don’t agree with me i will… ARGH I DONT KNOW :D. you know, just do what i say and we will have a happy end hehe.

okay, countdown is running… you got 3 builds time :D.

keep up the great work ;)

    greetings from germany!

I’m not a fan of the popup box for updating twitter. Why can’t this be integrated into the twitter menu like the update box is on twitter.com? That would just make so much more sense to me.

Also, I mentioned this a little while back, but it is impossible to select all text in the status box on the messenger. Ctrl+A should in my opinion be ignored by digsby as a request for the “Add Contact” dialog when focus is set to the status box. It should instead (in this case) highlight all of the text in the box. It gets annoying to me when I have to manually select all, etc. I don’t see how this would be a hard one to fix. ;)

I think it would also be cool if you could make a way to show/hide the socials/email accounts at the bottom like you’ve done for the messenger connection status things. I know you can hide them via preferences, but a toggle button to show hide them or even show/hide selected ones would be great. I tend to like to have that space that they take up, but other times I use them at the bottom of the messenger.

I’m not sure why, but the only thing that I miss from Pidgin really is how it has a place holder that shows your chosen buddy icon at the bottom of the messenger. I think several other messengers show this in there as well, but I’m not sure which ones don’t. This just makes the messenger feel more personalized or something and far more convenient for updating you icon when you can just drag and drop and it’s set!

Hope I’ve inspired some more additions/tweaks for the next build! Thanks guys, digsby is great!

  46. Will Said,

Guys, great app! I’ve always been a transient laptop user, but since graduating and finding a new job, I’ve been chained down to a desk most hours a day. Digsby’s given me a fighting chance at keeping up on social networking and intraoffice instant message.

My one suggestion would be to expand on the preference pane for notifications. It’s a bit distracting having the IM window flash in my Windows task bar while, well, while I do everything, including type this comment. The Growl-esque pop-ups are fantastic, and if there was a way to make *that* the primary means of responding to messages, which we’ve already sort of got, that would be even better.

Just a couple comments I’ve got after the first month or so of use. All in all, your commitment to extensible functionality is superb, and I hope you keep it up without going overboard with it.

    Cheers!

Hey, I tested your updater last week. but this week when you rolled out the new version, my digsby got hosed.

  48. Mike Said,

    April 15, 2008 @ 1:46 pm

@Todd: The likely cause is that the test “updated” to the older version, including the update system itself. So, the newer update (that included the *new* update system that you already tested) was gone, and the old one was back. When the update (that included the new update system) was released, the old updater continued its poor performance and messed up your Digsby install.

(are you confused? So am I…)

Anyway, if you use the latest installer, you should be back up and running and the new updater (which was about 99.9% effective) will be used from here on out and this shouldn’t happen again.

    And some wishes :)

And visible\invisible lists for individual contacts. I using it on other programm for icq, and would like to use it on Digsby.
