Build 56 – Private Alpha Release
We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 56, r22037 r22044 r22059) which introduces several new features along with a few major performance enhancements that we have been working on. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
- Buddy List Search – just type a buddy’s name and the status bar converts into a search box making it easy to find buddies or perform a web search
- Significantly optimized all buddy list sorting and drawing code, reducing Digsby’s overall CPU usage by about 20% (or more for very long buddy lists)
- Significantly optimized IM window performance for much faster scrolling, especially with slow themes like GoneDark
This release is packed full of major changes so we are expecting some new bugs to pop up. If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.
Update 1 (05/19/2009 3:20pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a bug that caused the buddy list to stop sorting completely. Also, double clicking social network tray icons does open the “Set Status” dialog now. The new release number is r22044.
Update 2 (05/19/2009 5:40pm EST): There is a known bug that causes offline buddies to stay in their original group after signing off in a few cases. This is now fixed and will go out in the next patch release tomorrow.
Update 3 (05/20/2009 1:30pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing several bugs bringing the release number to r22059:
- Fixed a bug that caused offline merged contacts to remain in their original group after signing off
- Fixed a bug that caused Available/Away to not show in the tray icon right click menu
- Fixed a bug that caused the infobox to break if you press Alt + F4 with it in focus
- Fixed a bug that caused your Google Talk status to get cut off by one character in some cases
- Added log statements to help hunt down a bug that causes the status dropdown to not show

The search is very cool and useful, but maybe update Google’s favicon

To me, only one thing is stopping me from using Digsby everywhere: Firewalls.
Most messengers like MSN and Pidgin, can get around firewalls. The last time I used Digsby at work, it couldn’t connect.
I don’t know the current status, but as long as that’s not fixed, I’m sticking with an IM that can get around firewalls.

I would love to become an Alpha tester, I’ve been with Digsby for a very long time.

I’m pleased that I’ve had a successful update on the alpha, but after 10 minutes I’m feeling a bit foolish with anything I’m typing in status just changing my status. What am I missing about search that everyone else gets? Thanks
“Buddy List Search – just type a buddy’s name and the status bar converts into a search box making it easy to find buddies or perform a web search”
Digsby Said,

@Mike: Type with the buddy list in focus and not the status area itself.

This is why I use forced all my friends to use digsby! Keep the performance improvements coming.

@Mike: Type with the buddy list in focus and not the status area itself.
Got it! Either I’m not up to speed or things aren’t as intuitive as you think they are. Works great. Thanks
Anthony Baldarelli Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:03 pm
I am with Mike on this, this search thing is confusing and does not work. Maybe I am doing something stupid. But even what you said does not work. I mean, what does it mean to “have the buddy list in focus”? I am a programmer and I have it in focus and it does not work. Also, while the idea is great, if 2 people cannot use it ( so far ), then maybe it is not very intuitive??? Just a thought.

With me I found that if I have some accounts disabled, the search feature doesn’t work. Try enabling all your accounts to see if it fixes your problem. With me I had to enable my Yahoo account.
Doug V Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:22 pm
@Anthony: I found that I had to “click” on a buddy name then start typing. I have auto-hide on the buddy list, and just sliding it out doesn’t mean it’s in “focus”.
That said, since I can scroll through the buddies, causing the pop-out to show up with their status, it seems that should be focus enough (rather than clicking). It would certainly be more intuitive.
Ray Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:25 pm
I’ll chime in here and add to the list of people that find the search functionality non-intuitive. I figured it out after Mike made his comment, but I couldn’t figure it out on my own. I strongly suggest adding a menu option to search contacts that would activate the search box.
I also just figured out that Ctrl-F triggers the search box, so you’re halfway there.
Zach Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:26 pm
“Double clicking social networks (buddy list or tray icon) now opens the “Set Status” dialog instead of going to the homepage of that social network. You can still get to the homepage via the right click menu or the links at the top of the infobox.”
Any chance this can be made into a toggle setting? I realize in non-alpha builds it’s currently inconsistent between at least Facebook (opens facebook page) and Twitter (opens status update window), but I honestly prefer Facebook’s behavior since it can be difficult to browse timelines in the Digsby feed area – it’s too easy to accidentally move your mouse out of focus, closing the feed.
Anthony Baldarelli Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:28 pm
@Digsby: Did so and even though I saw it download updates, I guess it did not install them. I bet, by dumb luck, I was in “Local Mode” when Digsby actually started ( I was doing some proxy changes in IE while it was downloading the updates, and that proxy change usually makes it so I cannot connect to certain services ). Maybe in “Local Mode” it does not install the updates? Just a guess.
Now it works perfectly. So thanks for your help. It makes sense now, what you guys were thinking. Maybe add a “Search” menu item to the “Tools” menu, and, as a second priority, to the system tray icon???? Just a thought.
BUT great work!!!! Now I see why so many people were excited about this feature. Thanks again for a great product.
David Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:29 pm
Good work guys.
I know it’s been mentioned before but I would really like to have the ability to display nicknames for email accounts and social networks instead of the default display which is the email address or account name.

@broncho: That’s the Public Release.
Digsby Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:55 pm
@Ray: Adding it to the Tools menu makes sense since that would also expose the fact that “Ctrl + F” brings up the search dialog.
@Zach: Giving more prominence to the act of setting status and difficulty in browsing timelines aren’t really related. The real solution is to make the timelines better
SacredCultivator Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 2:56 pm

I found it useeful-ish.
I don’t get why you added a web search. I will never use this feature as there is one in my browser and it is a more direct way to it.
Click the buddy list then try typing, those of you who were having problems.
Tomasino Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 3:13 pm
Great work, Digs. *Checks master list of awesome…* Now all we need is group chat and we’re good to go. Oh, and a plug-in architecture would be handy too, so I can create nifty things like built-in pizza ordering from Dominos. In the meantime, I’m gonna go randomly IM people and play with this search thingy.

Just noticed you have to click outside the buddy list for the chat window to become active, the first time to cancel the search, second to make the window active.
Digsby Said,

@All: We just pushed out a patch fixing the issue that caused strange buddy list side effects.
@Jacob: Good catch. Added to the to-do list for the next patch release.

I’m having troubles authenticating against a Jabber server with this version. It worked fine in the previous alpha release (r21909) but this one just hangs at “Authenticating…” I don’t get an error, I just never get past that. Cancelling the authentication then hitting connect ends up at the same spot. Removing my yaml tag and reverting to the last stable release and it behaves properly.
Chris Said,
May 19, 2009 @ 4:30 pm
I’d prefer the option (at least for facebook) to have double-click open the homepage. I set status via right-click, but tend to use the icon to go right to facebook a LOT MORE than anything else.

Digsby Said,

I cannot connect to the MSN network. Windows Live Messenger has no issues connecting, so it is not a network or firewall problem. I have tried submitting a bug report through Digsby, but it reports that there is a problem submitting the bug report, so I’m not sure if it got through.
MSN connection was working fine before this update.

Not sure if this is a bug, or what. But it seems like whenever digsby is launching, my computer slows to a crawl.
E.g. if digsby begins downloading updates, my computer is nearly unusable until the update is finished downloading and digsby relaunches. I’m not sure why downloading a few megabytes should be doing that . . .1

PS: Why is it not possible to “activate” an alpha user status? This way I have to keep this file on every of my PCs / reimplement it every time I format my HDD.
Freedomstar Said,

I just switched to alpha today. The new search is amazing! And hiding new messages in tray is great, except that replying from the popup logs it, but it doesn’t show up in the window.
I just have major issues with the sorting of my buddy list. Many of my buddies are placed in the incorrect group and when I change it to ordering by name, it seems like it still orders randomly. Thanks!
Can’t wait until the public release.

Digsby Said,
May 27, 2009 @ 8:45 am
@TheOperator: Use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log and mention that auto-update is failing in the description.
@Warwagon: In Preferences > Status you can drag and drop to rearrange them.
@Freedomstar: That bug is now fixed. The downside of being an alpha tester is that a bug does creep in every now and then.
@Leal: That is a great idea! Added to the “New Ideas” bucket!
