Build 56 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 56, r22037 r22044 r22059) which introduces several new features along with a few major performance enhancements that we have been working on. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Buddy List Search – just type a buddy’s name and the status bar converts into a search box making it easy to find buddies or perform a web search
  • Significantly optimized all buddy list sorting and drawing code, reducing Digsby’s overall CPU usage by about 20% (or more for very long buddy lists)
  • Significantly optimized IM window performance for much faster scrolling, especially with slow themes like GoneDark

This release is packed full of major changes so we are expecting some new bugs to pop up. If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.

Update 1 (05/19/2009 3:20pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a bug that caused the buddy list to stop sorting completely. Also, double clicking social network tray icons does open the “Set Status” dialog now. The new release number is r22044.

Update 2 (05/19/2009 5:40pm EST): There is a known bug that causes offline buddies to stay in their original group after signing off in a few cases.  This is now fixed and will go out in the next patch release tomorrow.

Update 3 (05/20/2009 1:30pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing several bugs bringing the release number to r22059:

  • Fixed a bug that caused offline merged contacts to remain in their original group after signing off
  • Fixed a bug that caused Available/Away to not show in the tray icon right click menu
  • Fixed a bug that caused the infobox to break if you press Alt + F4 with it in focus
  • Fixed a bug that caused your Google Talk status to get cut off by one character in some cases
  • Added log statements to help hunt down a bug that causes the status dropdown to not show
  • Great post! I'll subscribe right now wth my feedreader software!
  • Warwagon
@Warwagon: In Preferences > Status you can drag and drop to rearrange them.
    --------------

But I have about 50 of them. Always making new ones.
  • Digsby
@Timk: We'll add an "Advanced Preferences" section in the future and how long the popups take to fade out will be one of those.
  • TimK
Hi! is it possible to add a notification time box?? (for popup toasts etc...) i always seem to look right when they are fading away and i would love to extend that time a bit ;)
If this is possible and I have missed it I am rather sorry lol.
Alas, Digsby is fantastic! Keep up the fantastic work!
  • Digsby
@TheOperator: Use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log and mention that auto-update is failing in the description.

@Warwagon: In Preferences > Status you can drag and drop to rearrange them.

@Freedomstar: That bug is now fixed. The downside of being an alpha tester is that a bug does creep in every now and then.

@Leal: That is a great idea! Added to the "New Ideas" bucket!
  • TheOperator
Hey this is really weird, mine is just not updating to this version at all, on my about there is Build 21895. Is this the version I want? I re-installed and put the tag.yaml in the right place. Any suggestions?
  • michael
im loving digsby and telling my friends! it does everything and i hope it becomes the staple IM/email machine it has potential to become!
  • Warwagon
Sweet release. Now all we need is to be able to arrange away messages by name and digsby will be feature complete.
  • Leal
quick feature suggestion for buddy list search: love the new feature, but would be awesome if by adding .com .edu .org etc... digsby would auto-open the browser and direct to the url directly.
  • I just switched to alpha today. The new search is amazing! And hiding new messages in tray is great, except that replying from the popup logs it, but it doesn't show up in the window.

I just have major issues with the sorting of my buddy list. Many of my buddies are placed in the incorrect group and when I change it to ordering by name, it seems like it still orders randomly. Thanks!

Can't wait until the public release.
  • Hagata
Could you please link to the alpha version file each time you post about any alpha releases? Thanks!

PS: Why is it not possible to "activate" an alpha user status? This way I have to keep this file on every of my PCs / reimplement it every time I format my HDD.
  • samo mahmoud
hey all...i wanna know how i get the last version of digsby ?????
    shall i reinstalled it ?
    thanks...
  • ^Hmmm I actually experience that from time to time as well (Public Release).
  • i am not sure this issie is concerned with this release or is persisting from earlier releases, coz i haven't been using disby very often lately, but it seem that the entire login authentication and loadinfg of contact list procedure has slowed down in case og Google Talk...
  • Any chance we're going to see ping.fm support?

I had to switch to twhirl for twitter, for now.
  • James
sometime when i chat on msn, the status of the contact show "typing" and then it freeze and no message comes through? Not sure if the message did not come through or the contact didn't finished typing but the status is still "typing" like forever.

This is for the public release version btw, not the alpha version. Posted it here so you guys can have clear attention to it, and looking forward to the next public release.
  • Direct IM on AIM, anytime in the next century? please?
  • Siyang
This new build is awesome! I love the search. There is one thing that bugs me though. Double-clicking on a social network now lets you set the status. I really prefer openning the social network's page. Can you add a setting to change this behavior?
  • Mike
can we expect to have REAL new features antime before Jesus comes back to earth? thanks in advance
  • Sal
sounds like a nice app, def. going to check it out soon..
  • @Tommy: Hehe yeah... Digsby seems to have crappe dout again as it was working yesterday with the new Alpha... but dead again Can't connect to MSN.
  • plagued
i seem to have lost the system tray icon in the latest alpha release
  • digsby is freezing on me all the time tonight. maybe it's due to some other crap going on on my system but it has never been like that before :(.

love digsby and want it work smooth again <3.
  • Brian
It Seems my Jabber issue has resolved itself as of the latest update.

    Cheers.
  • someone
when will you ever add an ability to save all of the configurations in the installation folder, and not using a digsby account?
i do not wish to register , and i like having all of my user account settings and information on my computer .
  • easy90rider
    I can’t update.
It starts to download the update than it stops and starts digsby in normal mode. it happened 4 or 5 times.(posted this once in ie6 but I don't see it in Firefox.weird:|)
reinstalled Digsby, I had r21909 now I have r21316 update starts downloading dut doesn't finish.
  • SbuxReg
thanks for fixing that offline friend bug......twas very annoying!
  • Not sure if this is a bug, or what. But it seems like whenever digsby is launching, my computer slows to a crawl.

E.g. if digsby begins downloading updates, my computer is nearly unusable until the update is finished downloading and digsby relaunches. I'm not sure why downloading a few megabytes should be doing that . . .1
  • easy90rider

  • neil
awesome, great job guys. Love the search, love the speed increases but still missing IRC.
  • gerard
Thanks for the great work as usual. Still waiting for an improvement on the Twitter interface. I would love to get rid of Tweetdeck, but Digsby's Twitter interface is not there yet.
  • Tommy
@Samuel: I have the same problem. I had to start Windows Live Messenger to get online. I hope they fix this soon, since my main reason for using Digsby is so I don't have to run WLM...
  • gringo
is it possible that the Twitter's avatars aren´t showing correctly? It only shows a black image next to every status update
  • joggs
msn messenger disconnects and connects all the time as we speak. Something at the msn servers or in the new alpha build? No proxy used, running on vista x64
  • mpffffhhhh
finally, on this machine, the alpha is running again. great.
and its a nice thing to search in digsby ;)

    so thanks!
  • Samuel
I cannot connect to the MSN network. Windows Live Messenger has no issues connecting, so it is not a network or firewall problem. I have tried submitting a bug report through Digsby, but it reports that there is a problem submitting the bug report, so I'm not sure if it got through.

MSN connection was working fine before this update.
  • loveit
the new search bar is just amazing. Nice done guys!
  • ¡WOW!
  • Digsby
@Brian: Submit a bug report if it does not resolve itself.

@port: As soon as we stabilize this alpha release it will be the next public release.
  • David
@Kevin: I had the same problem. I ended up having to reinstall Digsby in order to get it to update to the new alpha.
  • Brian
It seems that Jabber has broken for me as of this update.. Can I send any info to help debug it?
  • @Kevin: That happened to me the first time as well.. I just had to close the program, and relaunch it. When it did, it updated properly.
  • Cliff
    P.P.S. You guys rock!
  • Cliff
    OMG.

Seriously, this morning I was thinking...

"The only feature I really want in Digsby is type-down searching of buddy names in the contact list."

    Thanks for reading my mind!

(p.s. that, and indexing/searching of IM logs)
  • port
there's been all these alpha releases, but how about some love for us careful ppl who wait for the final releases? :-)
  • Kevin
Is anyone else having trouble updating? Mine downloads for a little bit then hangs and just logs in without updating anything.
  • Liviu
well done guys ! The search functionality rocks !
a small issue tho: I'm using the Group Offline Contacts", and with the latest alpha, some contacts are still in the online user area, after they go offline.

    cheers
  • Digsby
    @James: Definitely.

@Dan: We've had a few reports like this but are having trouble reproducing the issue. We'll try to get it resolved ASAP.
  • Are you guys planning to add proper support for the Windows 7 taskbar anytime soon? It's just a little bothersome that I can't *really* add the Digsby icon to it!
  • Angie
Its sooooooo awesome.... no.... awesome is not the word.... there are no words to describe it!!!
  • Chris
I'd prefer the option (at least for facebook) to have double-click open the homepage. I set status via right-click, but tend to use the icon to go right to facebook a LOT MORE than anything else.
  • Dan
I'm having troubles authenticating against a Jabber server with this version. It worked fine in the previous alpha release (r21909) but this one just hangs at "Authenticating..." I don't get an error, I just never get past that. Cancelling the authentication then hitting connect ends up at the same spot. Removing my yaml tag and reverting to the last stable release and it behaves properly.
  • Digsby
@All: We just pushed out a patch fixing the issue that caused strange buddy list side effects.

@Jacob: Good catch. Added to the to-do list for the next patch release.
  • Jacob
    >Jacob Said,
    May 19, 2009 @ 3:12 pm

Just noticed you have to click outside the buddy list for the chat window to become active, the first time to cancel the search, second to make the window active.
  • Great work, Digs. *Checks master list of awesome...* Now all we need is group chat and we're good to go. Oh, and a plug-in architecture would be handy too, so I can create nifty things like built-in pizza ordering from Dominos. In the meantime, I'm gonna go randomly IM people and play with this search thingy.
  • Jacob
    I found it useeful-ish.
I don't get why you added a web search. I will never use this feature as there is one in my browser and it is a more direct way to it.

Click the buddy list then try typing, those of you who were having problems.
  • Now, if I could just get that LONG desired (begged for...) checkbox of "start Digsby minimized to system tray". That would be the ticket!!!
  • @broncho: Forgot ot add this, which leads you to becoming an Alpha Tester;
    http://blog.digsby.com/archives/287
  • Digsby
@Ray: Adding it to the Tools menu makes sense since that would also expose the fact that "Ctrl + F" brings up the search dialog.

@Zach: Giving more prominence to the act of setting status and difficulty in browsing timelines aren't really related. The real solution is to make the timelines better :)
  • @broncho: That's the Public Release.
  • Finally, a good search :D !
  • Nikulai
I installed the alpha and my buddy list has disapeared... I have restarted several times
  • I have a "Digsby - Build 21895"! Is this a new alpha or not?
If not, how can I test new version?!
  • David
    Good work guys.

I know it's been mentioned before but I would really like to have the ability to display nicknames for email accounts and social networks instead of the default display which is the email address or account name.
  • Anthony Baldarelli
@Digsby: Did so and even though I saw it download updates, I guess it did not install them. I bet, by dumb luck, I was in "Local Mode" when Digsby actually started ( I was doing some proxy changes in IE while it was downloading the updates, and that proxy change usually makes it so I cannot connect to certain services ). Maybe in "Local Mode" it does not install the updates? Just a guess.

Now it works perfectly. So thanks for your help. It makes sense now, what you guys were thinking. Maybe add a "Search" menu item to the "Tools" menu, and, as a second priority, to the system tray icon???? Just a thought.

BUT great work!!!! Now I see why so many people were excited about this feature. Thanks again for a great product.
  • Zach
"Double clicking social networks (buddy list or tray icon) now opens the “Set Status” dialog instead of going to the homepage of that social network. You can still get to the homepage via the right click menu or the links at the top of the infobox."

Any chance this can be made into a toggle setting? I realize in non-alpha builds it's currently inconsistent between at least Facebook (opens facebook page) and Twitter (opens status update window), but I honestly prefer Facebook's behavior since it can be difficult to browse timelines in the Digsby feed area - it's too easy to accidentally move your mouse out of focus, closing the feed.
  • Ray
I'll chime in here and add to the list of people that find the search functionality non-intuitive. I figured it out after Mike made his comment, but I couldn't figure it out on my own. I strongly suggest adding a menu option to search contacts that would activate the search box.

I also just figured out that Ctrl-F triggers the search box, so you're halfway there.
  • Doug V
@Anthony: I found that I had to "click" on a buddy name then start typing. I have auto-hide on the buddy list, and just sliding it out doesn't mean it's in "focus".

That said, since I can scroll through the buddies, causing the pop-out to show up with their status, it seems that should be focus enough (rather than clicking). It would certainly be more intuitive.
  • Nick
With me I found that if I have some accounts disabled, the search feature doesn't work. Try enabling all your accounts to see if it fixes your problem. With me I had to enable my Yahoo account.
  • william
    add hi5 in social networks
  • Digsby
@Anthony: Click Help > About to make sure you have the latest release. It may be that you didn't get the update yet.
  • Gary
I love digsby! I want to test for you guys.

  • Anthony Baldarelli
I am with Mike on this, this search thing is confusing and does not work. Maybe I am doing something stupid. But even what you said does not work. I mean, what does it mean to "have the buddy list in focus"? I am a programmer and I have it in focus and it does not work. Also, while the idea is great, if 2 people cannot use it ( so far ), then maybe it is not very intuitive??? Just a thought.
  • Mike
@Mike: Type with the buddy list in focus and not the status area itself.

Got it! Either I'm not up to speed or things aren't as intuitive as you think they are. Works great. Thanks
  • This is why I use forced all my friends to use digsby! Keep the performance improvements coming.
  • Digsby
@Mike: Type with the buddy list in focus and not the status area itself.
  • Mike
I'm pleased that I've had a successful update on the alpha, but after 10 minutes I'm feeling a bit foolish with anything I'm typing in status just changing my status. What am I missing about search that everyone else gets? Thanks

"Buddy List Search - just type a buddy’s name and the status bar converts into a search box making it easy to find buddies or perform a web search"
  • Instant increase in speed for the overall program. Yofi (beautiful).

    Thanks
  • Ahhhh. Buddy list searching is exactly what I was missing since I moved over from Pidgin! Now if only I could get the "You feel a disturbance in the force" before someone starts Iming me :]
  • Arden
I was waiting for the search function soooooo long, guys. Now i am completely moving to Digsby.
Very very good work, guys. I love Python and anything made by it. :-)
  • Benni
    Yay!

The search feature is awesome, very fast and handy!
    Love it!
  • Elle
Already see a difference - Love the search feature - Have over 300 contacts for personal and work contacts. Keep it up DIGSBY!
  • Adam
Wow! The new searching is awesome, guys!
    Thank you so much!
  • I would love to become an Alpha tester, I've been with Digsby for a very long time.

    Thanks,
  • To me, only one thing is stopping me from using Digsby everywhere: Firewalls.

Most messengers like MSN and Pidgin, can get around firewalls. The last time I used Digsby at work, it couldn't connect.

I don't know the current status, but as long as that's not fixed, I'm sticking with an IM that can get around firewalls.
  • The search is very cool and useful, but maybe update Google's favicon ;)
