What IM Protocol Do You Want Next?
The community run website at digsbies.org is holding a poll asking what IM protocol we should have next and we thought we would promote the poll a bit to get some insight:
http://digsbies.org/site/node/137
On another note, we have a new build coming early next week with the Twitter enhancements you have been asking for, a more solid auto-update system, and numerous bug fixes.

IRC all the way.

I think Skype still has enough of a stand-alone ability to make it worthwhile having as a separate application, however IRC is already supported by Trillian and it’s the service that least requires its own stand-alone app.

I’d imagine IRC would be best at first because it’d be easier to implement. Skype could come further down the line.
I’d love to have Skype functionality built into Digsby because it’d be one less app to open and keep track of. I don’t want to keep Skype open all the time, but I have my chat app open all the time anyways. That’s why it’d make sense to me.

I voted for IRC all the way as well. I’m kind of torn between IRC and Skype, but I honestly don’t think it is worth it to implement Skype until you have it reverse engineered and won’t have to launch the actual Skype client everytime you want to use Skype in Digsby. That is just pointless to me. But I would definitely say that Skype is a much needed service as well….just really needs to be native though, without the official client altogether.
Thanks for listening so well to your fans!
Can’t wait mainly for the memory optimizations and performance increases! I noticed that several of the “png” image files that are installed for the themes, etc. are not fully optimized. I ran several of them through a great PNG compression program that will optimized the file size and no quality is lost (just select those in the preferences), but some of the images were cut down to like 20% of their original size. The app that I used for this was PNGGauntlet (just google for it, free and awesome)!

How about QQ? They have support for that in Pidgin, but it’s pretty weak at best.

I love digsby, but stop with the protocols! Let’s get Digsby running under 80 MB for once! Get auto update working in a decent manner. Add real features (Google Calendar integration, etc.). I see those as being higher priorities than IM’s that aren’t often used.

I would really like to see AIM Chat supported, so I can make the switch over completely to Digsby. I’m required to have an AIM Screen name for work and to have access to AIM Chat - right now I am using Trillian but I would much prefer to be able to ditch it forever

I think something that would really shoot Digsby into the stratosphere of IM clients would be support for Pownce and Twitter. If you could update those and receive updates via Digsby, I imagine you’d get many thousands of more users. Both have public APIs, so this shouldn’t be too terribly complicated.
Just my two cents.
The app is looking great, and I’m following it to see where it goes from here.

@honest ape - we already support twitter. You can add it to your social accounts list. We will add pownce support in the future as well.

@Eric: “aren’t often used” sounds like code for “I don’t use”. Lots of people use IRC.
IRC gets my vote. I believe there’s an open social networking architecture that a lot of sites use as well, which might be low-hanging fruit for adding a whole lot of bullet points.
Another option would be RSS feeds… we have lots of other readers, but a) it’s not hard to implement, and b) sometimes you might want a new item showing up to appear in the context of an IM.

The poll is now closed and are the final results!
Total votes: 2013
1. Gadu-Gadu (35%)
2. Skype (24%)
3. IRC (19%)
4. Facebook chat (7%)
5. Xfire (5%)
6. MySpace IM (4%)
7. Sametime IM (2%)
…
11. Other (2%) - IM protocols mentioned in comments include Campfire, Bonjour, RetroShare and Steam.
You haven’t heard of Gadu-Gadu either? We got hit by a Polish version of Digg to get people to vote on GG (it’s apparently the most used IM client there).
We are currently asking what social network people want next:

Second for Group Chat. I use IM a lot for work and not being able to do group chat is painful at times. Usually means I have to log out of that particular client in Digsby and launch something else.
IRC would be useful as it’s widespread, but I don’t use it much myself.

There are thousands of people with jobs who have to use Sametime…and therefore, Pigdin.
Work on Sametime first, let the kids worry about their silly Facebook IM later.

Very impressive that you guys take the time to listen to the users. Not too common in the tech world, even though very much needed. Congrats on selecting an EXCELLENT strategy!
I would really like to see RSS integration and then a calender service integration, like Google Calender or Outlook, etc. I think that a focus towards making it a more productive tool will win over many skeptics and also cement the Digsby name on the list of productivity tools that are still allowed by proxy servers the world over!
And pretty please… keep it ad free!

IRC Support. Something creative would be nice but really the ability to add a server to an account would be super. Then add Channels under that server etc with different notification options etc.
That would make this the perfect im/chat client.

How about QQ? It is a chinese messenger. Almost everyone in China has it. Pidgin supports it. Maybe if you add it and more languages, you might get a lot more users. I’m not sure they will find Digsby though. I will tell my friends if you guys add it.
