Build 23 - Public Beta Launch
What a ride this has been! Since going into private beta testing just six weeks ago, we have released 15 new builds which included 35 major changes, 53 enhancements, and 109 bug fixes. Thank you to everyone who participated in the private beta test for the all the feedback and bug reports. We have been working day and night to squash bugs and implement your suggestions and will continue to do so!
Today, we are proud to announce a major milestone for our little egg-shaped friend. We are launching Digsby into public beta testing to make it available for everyone! An invite code is no longer needed and you can show your support by taking a minute to Invite Your Friends.
With today’s announcement, we are introducing several highly requested features. The complete list of changes can be found on our Change Log as always, but most notably we added:
- Twitter Support – this has been the most requested social network by far. Enjoy!
- Audio/Video Chat – we partnered with TokBox to provide A/V support across IM networks. Implementing native A/V support for all the protocols is still on the roadmap and we will add this functionality in the future.
- Spell Check – we added inline spell checking for the English language (us/gb/ca). We will add 50+ other languages very shortly.
- “Listening to…” Status – there is a new option in the status dropdown which sets your status message to the song you are currently listening to in iTunes or Winamp. We will add support for other media players in the future.
- Block Support – you can now block contacts from the right click menu on the buddy list or the dropdown menu at the top-right corner of the IM window.
- Full Screen Preferences – there is a new set of preferences in the “Advanced” tab for what Digsby should do when you are running full screen applications such as games.
We hope you enjoy the new features and if you experience any bugs send us an email at bugs@digsby.com. Moving forward, the top priority right now is optimizing performance and memory usage. Thank you for your support!

Why does the status need to be set to away in order for the song information to be shown? I’m not away. I’m at the computer and listening to music. I can still talk.

@eft0 -
You’ll need to add it as a Social Network under Tools | Preferences then Add Social Network -> Twitter.

@eft0 - try restarting again and make sure you have r13522 (Help > About)
@bangbang023 - you don’t need to be away. Click the orb and it will be available. It will also remember this next time you choose it.

@sparkingwit - If you go to preferences and choose the “Add” option under social networks you should see it.

Digsby rocks, I’ve been using it for a while, and this most recent update is awesome. Yea, Twitter support is awesome, I feel good about this web chat, but have yet to try.
I am however having this consistent problem, that I thought would be fixed in this most recent update. When I try to sign on my MSN account (live.com) I get an authentication error.

This is awesome, I’m truly on love with Digsby (not literally of course, that would be… weird :P). Digsby is the first app that I have used in favor of Windows Live Messenger, it’s just perfect. I also have accounts on socialthing! and FriendFeed, but I like the Digsby way much better! I know it may not be the best thing to put a piece of software up against websites, but they are very similar, except from the fact that it just works a lot better as a piece of software (ie Digsby) :).
Great work guys!
Now go implement Pownce support right now! j/k
(but Pownce support would be awesome in the future)

Digsby does not connect to any service after update!
Steve Said,
March 20, 2008 @ 12:14 pm
@All with strange bugs like services not working or digsby completely not starting:
We host our updates on Amazon S3 because of its ability to scale. Apparently it is not scaling as well as it should be and some people are getting partial updates that are either breaking parts of digsby or breaking digsby completely. If you are having this issue and digsby starts up but with weird bugs delete your “manifest” file in the digsby program folder. This will force digsby to do another update and hopefully a complete one this time.
We have also gotten a few reports of digsby not starting at all. If you are experiencing this then download the installer from the website and run it.
We are currently testing a more robust auto-update system that will roll back changes and let you log in with the previous version if part of the update fails. We want to make sure it is solid before we push it.
kimster Said,

March 20, 2008 @ 12:25 pm
@kimster - check the changelog… it is listed in the apologies section. It was causing the buddy list to come to the front when popups would show. We took it out temporarily but will have it back shortly.

@Greg - we currently only support one formatting style. We will add multi-formatting in the future though
@bubazoo - we don’t store the account password or your contacts - the invite page lets you choose which ones you want to invite and sends an email to them to make it easier for you
@Logrej - see my above comment. We will fix this shortly. You may need to run the installer this time though.
@Mike - it looks like you have not gotten an update in a long time. Is it possible that it would be your firewall? If you still have trouble email us at bugs@digsby.com

@Darrell - after it logs in can you use the Help > Send Bug Report option to submit a diagnostic log so we can figure out why it is not updating for you. Afterwards, if you delete the manifest file in the digsby folder that will force another update.
Darrell Jordan Said,
March 20, 2008 @ 3:13 pm
Ok. deleting the manifest file worked and I now have Twitter and spell check
I think the Twitter would work better if it interacted more like IM than how you have it.

Hi Steve,
when will German language support be included in Digsby?
It’s sad that you offer beta-downloads with invite codes to portals like chip.de but the betas are only in English…
Still waiting for digsby.com/de or digsby.de and a German language support for the tool itself…

I know a lot of new features were added with this build, but how much did the installer size increase!? It’s at 17.6mb now! The fresh install size here is ~60mb! This just seems ridiculously high to me. I love digsby and understand that it is still in beta, but there is no reason why the size of the lib files shouldn’t be minimized. Looking through them, it seems that there are just several ~7mb dlls that are taking up most of the space.
I just hope some time goes in to optimize the resources sizes (png compression with PNGGauntlet can cut down some file size and not visually alter the images at all!) and minimize the lib size. Digsby’s 17.6mb installer seems crazy when you compare that to other software like 5.0mb for Opera 9.5 and 7.0mb for Firefox 3 beta 4 even with all of the capabilities that the two have packed into those installers. Or even Trillian Astra is only 11mb for the installer…installed it takes up ~24mb, which is far better than digsby’s ~60mb!
One last thing, i submitted a bug report about the status menu when you right click the digsby tray icon…it is showing a square for an odd character in there. I’m guessing it might be the music note symbol, but not everyone has the fonts installed I suppose. So now it looks like “[] Listening to…”.
Nice changelog. I will be anticipating the task bar option soon! Also, facebook is getting ready to release their own messaging serivce soon you know. I hope you guys can jump on that and tie it in with digsby!

hey guys.
digsby is very nice but I have to tell you what I dislike about it.
when I put digsby on the edge of the screen and I have the option “digsby is alway on top” active, all my desktop icons are placed somewhere else. also the window size of all my active applications is very small then. I’m using XP.
another thing: when I drag and drop a buddy (ICQ protocol) to another group sometimes the contact just disappear.
these bugs are very annoying.
also an option to choose the transparency of your contact list would be very appreciated.
Steve Said,
March 21, 2008 @ 9:24 am
@Oli - are you sure you havent set the option to “dock when near edge of screen” - that changes the size of your desktop, which moves desktop icons over. Window sizes is a bug we are working on now.
@kyleabaker - agreed! We are going to tackle optimizations very shortly.
@Cata - I sent you an email to figure out what is going wrong.

hey thanks i figured out the away-listening-to thing. however I have a larger problem.
I have deleted the manifext several times, but im no longer able to finish logging on to digsby. not sure if this is related, but digsby locks up for quite awhile when launching a video file with the now playing on (i use the newest winamp for video) and then also locks up again when winamp is closed.
I have been looking for a better atlternative to trillian for about 2 years. pidgin is ok but very, very basic. I really like your software and hope it gets optimized better in the near future so I can actually depend on it. I realize this is just the first public beta and applaud your work to this point however.
I honestly dont care that it uses 80mb of ram (out of my 2gb) or 60mb of hd space (out of my 150gb) i just want stability.
keep up the great work, I will keep a keen eye on you!

I know its been stated before but, is there any way to fix the listening to problem where it only displays the artist name and a hyphen?

Great work on the new features! I can’t wait to try out the new voice and video chat (It can do voice over Google Talk…..right?)
Digsby is a fantastic app, however, the lack of group chat in AIM is a massive problem. If it weren’t for that, Digsby would be the only client on my system. AIM group chat is the only reason why I have Pidgin still installed. Please, make group chat the new no. 1 priority!
Keep up the great work!

Hi,
Some impressive features. Close to being a killer application for me. I’ve found it crashes quite a lot when playing with options etc, but thats expected in a beta.
One big thing is getting this to work through VPNs. I don’t know if im just being daft, but its completely cut off when I change to a VPN. Msn messenger just requires a restart to kick it back into action.
Cheers,
Tim

Can we get ram usage down? Or maybe releasing a ‘lite’ version? Mine has been running steady for a few days and was taking up 93mb of ram. 93!! Restarting the program took it down to 57, but that is still ridiculously high. Thats more than frickin’ FIREFOX, which also has all my social websites integrated into it not to mention the rest of the internet.
having said that…
Great chat client, and great execution in integrating all of the things that are there! Aside from memory usage, and a few other little things you already said you are working on, digsby looks like THE top tier chat client. Congrats.

My Digsby client just won’t launch and stop itself without any warning after the latest public beta update. Uninstalling and installing it now…

Just got Digsby and am playing with it as we speak. Love love love it.
The only thing that I am aching for is native A/V support for AIM and MSN at least but I see that on the roadmap. I only ask that it stays there. If you implement that support then you will be the ONLY multiprotocol out there. Period.
Keep up the amazing work!
