Build 51 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 51, r21071 r21152) which introduces a few small bug fixes and enhancements. Our goal is to push this build out as the next public release as long as no new issues have been introduced.  So, if you catch any new bugs please let us know. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • When the buddy list is closed to the icon tray or minimized to the taskbar, it will no longer resort as buddies sign on or off. When you bring it back into focus, it will resort to apply any status changes. This will significantly reduce CPU usage when Digsby is not in use (especially useful for gamers)
  • Added diagnostic info to bug reports to help us hunt down CPU spins. If Digsby tells you it is running slowly, please choose “Yes” to submit the bug report so we can fix the issue

If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then.  We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.

Update  (3/24/2009 1:45pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch that fixes several bugs which were introduced in the latest alpha. Please let us know if there are any remaining issues.  If not, we hope to release this build to all users shortly.

Something I noticed, when I mouseover the display for MySpace it doesn't show any updates or info. Not sure if it is just me or a bug, but I wanted to point it out.
  • Digsby is a really interesting tool.
I decided to give it a try.

if every software developer decided to fix every bug in the world before introducing one single feature addition, it would take bout a decade for users to see a full featured software which we all know is not acceptable nor the norm of software development.

my question is what is going on with the development team...i know they don't spend a whole 2 weeks to fix one minor bug so what is distracting you guys? you say you are working are projects...are these 'projects' pertaining to the kitchen floor redecoration of your houses or does it actually have to do with digsby? because the rate and the content of your updates definitely do no represent a team of software developers that are working hours everyday on a software...so what are you really devoting your times to?
And to the people that keep saying its a free program its a free program...a billion amazing softwares out there are free as well..just because its free doesn't mean i have to be constantly frustrated..if every free software developement was this frustrating, half the world would have had a hard attack by now bc of it

I also agree with Uncle Mikey.
If you don't fix the problems now and keep adding new features, it'll make it much harder to fix it later when the system becomes more complex. Digsby does so much already!
Besides...they said the linux version will come soon after the windows version stabalises so I hope that day comes soon.

Just joined the alpha testers! hopefully I'll get the constant updates I miss. I have 2 issues, both related to ask you to fix.

    1. HUGE interface bug - ICQ (at least, if not other) auth requests come up as regular windows alerts, kicking me out of my games. PLEASE FIX

    2. A very simple filter to silently ignore any friend request with a URL in it would be a very simple and effective spam fighting method.
  • @Uncle Mikey: Digsby's been in CONSTANT development/stabilization for as long as I've been using it. Implying that adding new features in addition to bug fixing results in Vista is an outright insult to the coders that have been working on this software since day one. Why can't they do both? Why can't they continue to improve the software with bug fixes/stabilization AND throw in a new feature? Every new feature is going to result in more bugs anyway, so bug fixing will never end. There will always be room for improvement AND room for new features, because that's the way software that contains more than five lines of code works.
  • WARNING: Obligatory Mac version request follows..

When is the Mac version coming out? Excited for Digsby, but stuck with inferior options on OSX.

I am having an interesting problem that began when the latest alpha was released: Every 2 or so minutes, my facebook chat feature seems to sign in again, over and over. I noticed it because everybody am talking to will suddenly go offline followed by resigning in.
  • @Uncle Mikey
I agree as well but Digsby has taken it to the extreme - there have been no feature releases and only bug releases for the last however long I can remember. You can keep stabilizing and making things faster forever, but at some point you have to keep the feature requesters happy.

  • Hello
Very good work guys (maybe girls)
There is a featur, i think easy to program but not implemented

Hide digsby with keyboard like CTRL+SPACEBAR
This function is in WLM and it's call lock

    Thanks
  • I disagree strongly with @pineappleclock and others who advocate "taking a break" from bug fixing and focusing on new features.

This is exactly the sort of attitude that gets us Windows Vista.

Stabilize what you have, THEN add more stuff.

Great release, guys. Great program. Very happy with the way things are going.

@LePern: I would also like to know if autohide will be considered for that first notable change.
  • @pineappleclock: don't forget the two most requested wishlist items: group chat and OTR/transparent encryption.

idk if anyone else has been having this problem, but it seems to take forever to open a new IM window with this release. It only seems to be if I try to open a new convo with someone (not when the IM me) and only the first time. If I close the window and try again it's nice and quick.

Digsby is what I always wanted Pidgin to be. Thank you for you're hard work, dedication, and polish to a fantastic product. It's nice to finally have a quality alternative.
  • Snake
hey, nice soft the Digsby but there is one litlle anoyng thing..the smiles that differ from one IM to other...so i would sugest to copy the emotions from each IM and make them come by pressing the usual keys you are pressing on each IM...i hope you uderstood what i meant..

How about a new email only email list. That was it won't take up 12 lines when I only have a new email on one account. I do not need to see them if there are no new emails, duh.
Similar to the Offline buddy list???
  • @pineappleclock
Excellent point. Wholeheartedly agree. The blinking especially, should stop after a few blinks and just remain highlighted.

  • The first notable change listed, does it also apply to the "autohide when not in focus" selection?
  • narib
@pineappleclock jesus, it is a free application, what do you expect?

Priority for the company eventually would be to monetize the product (which I would gladly pay for if resonable) to recoupe development cost. they cannot do that until a product with suffecient stability and featureset has been released.

Adding new features prologs the dev cycle and prevents the product from going to market.
  • easy90rider
The WLMs yahoo support still not working, and there are still problems with the status not showing up.
  • renato
    Couldn't agree more..
  • Warwagon
Looks great. Now all we need is alphabetized away messages and you'll be golden.
  • Digsby
    @pineappleclock: Agreed :)
  • Why not take a break with the constant bug fixing and add some new features? There are a list of them here: http://digsbies.org/site/wishlist
Personally, I have never had a problem with CPU or digsby freezing or any of that, and I suspect the majority of people have not either. However, we are tired of the inability to make just one word bold, the inability to search through our chat history, no option to turn window blinking off, no option to hide windows while away, set away on idle, just to name a few. Please consider prioritizing your development time, thanks!
  • I think my favorite feature of Digsby is all the self-diagnostics and bug reports. Definitely adds a hint of maturity into the mix.
