Build 20 - Quick Fixes

We just pushed an update (Build 20, r12861) that fixes a few key bugs. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Most notably:

  • We tracked down another one of the causes for high CPU usage and wanted to get it out right away
  • Better return from hibernate - we wait 15 seconds before doing updates to let your computer reconnect to the Internet

This has been going on for a while, but I’m getting a crash every time I exit from Digsby via right-click on the system tray icon. (by crash I mean the MS dialog pops up asking if I want to submit an error report, etc.). No settings/changes are lost, and it’s really more of an annoyance than anything, but I thought I’d bring it up.

Would it not be a great idea if you could set the amount of delay after startup and after hibernate. I for example have problems connecting right after my PC has booted as it has not connected to the internet yet. Or maybe Disby could reconnect one or two seconds (n+2) later at next boot when it failed to connect at current boot. And then if next time it still fails add (n+2+2) etc.

Ah excellent. I mentioned I was getting high CPU usage in the last blog entry (posted it only a few hours ago), and this update has fixed it, so thanks.

These quick releases are great! I love seeing software in very fast development like this!

The only other thing that is really causing a spike for me is the tooltip popups that you get when hovering a contact, mail account or social account. I can move the mouse up and down the list just a few times and see my cpu spike like crazy then stop only seconds after I stop moving the mouse.

Also, looking forward to the memory optimizations! It’s currently using ~95mb. I love this messenger though. We need a linux build soon! I’m ready to replace Pidgin on my Ubuntu 8.04 x64 desktop.

One suggestion for the gmail account tooltip is…I prefer to mark messages in my inbox as read if I don’t need to read them later and then archive them. I can only do one or the other from within Digsby, but it would be nice to have a “Mark as read and archive” option somewhere in there. Thanks!

Does digsby autoupdate or do I need to do a fresh install everytime a new build comes out?

  7. Rich Said,

I get the same error as Ben whenever I close Digsby by right click.

Just a couple more suggestions. It would be handy to have the option to enable/disable sounds (maybe even notification popups, etc) when right clicking on the digsby tray icon.

I would also like to be able to disable the buddy list from showing up in the task bar, but I was unable to find that option. I would expect it to be in Preferences->Buddy List->Window Options->[]Show Buddy List in task bar.

I don’t use MySpace very often in the web browser, mostly just what digsby offers now. It would be handy to be able to update the mood from the digsby client. And speaking of updating the moods and status (facebook), it would be cooler if these were editable right from the popups when you hover your social networking account at the bottom of the client….similar to how you can reply to a conversation from within the popup.

Sometimes I get disconnected from my Aim account due to poor wireless reception, but when the account is reconnected I sometimes:
    1) Am unable to continue my conversation with this contact unless I close the tab/window and reopen it. Otherwise the message is just not received.
    2) Am unable to tell if the contact is online based on the icon in the conversation tab. The buddy icon in the tab turns gray when the user goes offline or your own account is disconnected, but it doesn’t update when you are reconnected.

Thanks to the team behind this! I hope these comments end up being helpful!

I’m getting the crash too like ben said

  11. Steve Said,

    March 4, 2008 @ 9:27 am

@All with crash on exit - we will try to knock this one out in the next 1-2 builds

@kyleabaker - not the first to ask for this. We will add a preference that makes “Archive” also mark as read. However, it will be all or nothing unless we add a “MArchive” link as well. As for the task bar, there have been many requests for this and we will have it in the next build!

    @dgamer: Auto-update, it’s really clean, almost invisible.

if the msn file transfer problem won’t be fixed i’ll stick with miranda because 2 kB/s is just too slow and i need that feature very often.

maybe you can look at miranda, where msn file tansfers are always full-speed…

    by the way:
i was experiencing very annoying group ordering problems.

i have 3 protocols (icq, msn, myspace) and sort them into 2 groups which worked pretty well at the beginning.but since a few days digsby always messes up my group aranangement by putting some contacts in the root folder or double them in 2 groups so i have to reorder them after was online with digsby, which keeps me from opening at the mommment.

hope you can fix that bug in the next build so i can go on testing this nice little app.

  15. Michael Said,

All I can say is “Plugin Support”!

that, and if you get a Zeroconf protocol supported (like Bonjour), this will be my only IM Client.

  16. Erik Said,

    March 4, 2008 @ 10:40 pm

I absolutly love digsby! It is by far the best IM client available for the windows platform.

Keep up the great work digsby dev team!

How are you guys planning on using the OpenAIM stuff that’s now available from AOL?

    http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/03/05/aol-boosts-third-party-chat-clients-with-open-aim-2-0/

  20. IGx89 Said,

    March 5, 2008 @ 7:14 pm

They can’t; OpenAIM’s license states that “developers are not permitted to build AIM Custom Clients that are interoperable with any other IM network.”

  21. Robin Said,

    March 6, 2008 @ 10:32 am

    hey there! nice work!
the only problem im having right now, is that im having trouble with message lost in icq…some ppl write me and i dont get those messages…i have to restart digsby in order to solve that problem…

  22. mike Said,

    March 6, 2008 @ 11:12 am

IGx89 is right, AOL’s license is not compatible with our project.

Robin- we’re working on that bug right now.

Big bug… the loss of focus !!
Can you fix it please ?

    1. I play in a fullscreen game
    2. Somebody sent me an instant message… and my game crash or the windows is minimised :(

Is there a way to display certain email addresses in the contact list and others in the system tray? I have a primary email address which I need visible all the time, but a couple of secondary ones that I don’t need in the contact list.

Also, I added a Yahoo email account today and it hasn’t been connecting? Is this a glitch with your system, or am I just doing something wrong?

Thanks for all your hard work!

  25. gamerjcwear Said,

    March 6, 2008 @ 7:03 pm

The problem with web-based e-mail addresses, is that with digsby you can see incoming messages, but can’t open your E-Mail client to read them as digsby is logged in to it. Is there a way for digsby mail checking to log in check for new messages and log out instead of stay logged in and prevent me from accessing my emails on my own or another computer?

Also it would be great if the file transfer protocol for MSN and google talk would work.

Xfire and IRC would be two other IM clients I would recommend adding. Memory usage can vary from 20Mb, to 50, to 100 to 200.

Facebook application is very detailed, any way to change the type of notifications?

  26. Steve Said,

    March 7, 2008 @ 10:52 am

@Millenius - we are working on full screen options to disable things like popups and sounds

@theleftfielder - if we get more requests for this we will make a per account option

@gamerjcwear - this is the first time we have heard of this issue. I don’t think that anything we do should prevent you from logging in to your account via a browser but if the problem persists email us at bugs@digsby.com

  27. mike Said,

    March 7, 2008 @ 11:22 am

    @gamerjcwear

you can change the notification types for facebook in the advanced settings of the account.

  28. Kana Said,

yeah, I just sent a bug report in - MSN and Yahoo messengers are not connecting for me the past few weeks. I’ve tried different ports (including the recommended ones) and my internet connection is solid. Worked before, but now they don’t. No settings have been changed, as far as I remember.

    Any ideas?

OpenAIM 2.0 fully allows multi-headed clients such as Digsby.

Sounds like we’ll have to take another look at that license agreement then ;-)
