Build 18 - Catchy Title Goes Here

We just pushed an update (Build 18, r12783) that fixes many bugs. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Most notably:

  • AIM realizes when the connection to the server dies
  • Sending and receiving IMs in MSN is much more reliable now
  • Digsby now works if your windows username has unicode in it
  • Sent IMs show in the IM window right away instead of after the server confirms delivery - you will be notified if delivery fails
  • AIM File transfers are more reliable now

If you still experience any of the bugs above please email us at bugs@digsby.com. Our focus for the next build includes:

  • File transfer bugs (send some diagnostic logs of failures)
  • Remaining CPU spiking bugs
  • Revamping the auto-update system to ensure that a partial update (and a broken digsby) can never happen
  • Start working on optimizing memory usage and plugging those leaks
  • Perhaps a new feature? :)

PS: We ran out of ideas for catchy blog post titles when announcing new builds. Please leave a comment with some ideas!

Update:

We just found one of the bugs that caused CPU usage to spike to 100% and couldn’t wait to get it out there so we pushed another update (Build 19, r12811). We will do our best to solve the rest of the bugs related to this issue within the next 1-2 builds. Also, if you use Yahoo and have trouble staying connected please submit a diagnostic log. We want to try to knock this one out ASAP.

Perhaps give each build a name. Perhaps characters from the Simpsons. That show should have enough for several dozen builds.

    “Perhaps a new feature”

    :-)

    1. Multi-computer settings for proper use of /resources on XMPP JIDs.

    2. An open API for those of us with programming skills to make plugins to share with the Digsby community

    Keep up the good work!

I just wanted to congratulate the Digsby team for the Awesome that is this software! no. seriously. I’m very impressed with the quick response to bugs and how freaking sweet the program really is.

    THANKS!

Great product - just started using the other day when I received an e-mail from RIT. A very small feature that would be helpful is the option to not display Digsby in the taskbar.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

    Regards,

Hmm, can’t figure out a good title either. Maybe .. nahh .. everything that pops up is to nerdy :D

Anyway, just want to thank you for your work. I think Digsby is my longest running “custom” IM client :)

being in invisible mode, preventing see who is online in gtalk ( google G Talk ) ….

also its nice to have the stealth mode, so i can be visible or invisible for selected IM friends…. it would be cool.

Even with the bugs, Disby is still a great little program.

Used Trillian before, and Digsby is sssooooo much better.

New feature suggestion: With the POP3/IMAP accounts, can you allow a URL to be entered instead of just a .exe file?

Keep up the fantastic work. Steve

  9. Steve Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 12:40 pm

    @Cory - #1 definitely, #2 in the longer term :)

@Matt - we are debating whether to make that the standard or an option

@Ola = thanks for the kind words

    @David - Gtalk doesn’t support invisible mode :(

How about “The BOOYA build!”

  11. Steve Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 12:41 pm

@Steve Roberts - we thought of doing that but didn’t know if anyone would need the functionality. Do you have webmail access to your IMAP account?

  12. Mike Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 12:43 pm

David- Jabber/GTalk doesn’t support invisible, and there basically 2 options we can go with for what happens when you choose invisible and one of your accounts is a Jabber/GTalk account:

    1) Tell the server we are offline. Works OK except for the fact that you don’t get status updates for your contacts any more. They’ll be frozen as whatever status they are until you tell the server you’re “online” again (could be available, away, whatver)

    2) Ignore the setting on Jabber/Gtalk. This works great except for the fact that you think you’re invisible but people still see you as online/whatever.

Since it is usually used for privacy, we opted for the more private solution for now (you show up as offline, but you don’t get status updates from friends).

After we figure out a good solution for it I’m sure it will be much more intuitive and useful- but as you can see our choices are limited.

  16. EgOiStE Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 12:45 pm

The “new feature” I’d love, as a last holdout in my college to PC, is to be able to work with leopard ichat. with Tiger it would have worked, but the server upgrade broke it. Miranda is the only client that allows me to connect via SSL and Disable SASL authentication so that I can jabber to ichat servers.

but i’m still loving this over pidgin!

  17. Craig Said,

Pretty cool tool. A bunch of people in my company use Skype, so I haven’t been unable to unload this. Skype is big on telephony, but if there’s a way to just tap into the IM part, then there would truly be a one-stop place for IM!

I fortunately haven’t been affected by the bugs listed as I am pretty much a gtalk/yahoo user exclusively.

It would be really nice and convenient for ctrl+i, ctrl+u, and ctrl+b toggle italics, underline, and bold font formats. :-)

  27. Steve Said,

My MSN connection to eMail never works.

Also if you at some point create a video for Skype and ooVoo

Good job on what you have done so far…

  29. Brian Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 1:28 pm

    Good work guys…

An issue that I have seen that still remains unfixed is:

When you “show desktop”, by pressing windows-key and D, if you have Digsby on auto-hide, docked with the left side of the window, it messes up the docking procedure after.

Also when it is docked and auto-hide is on, I think you should have a feature that enables Digsby to hide to tray. Currently if you click the close button it just hides the window.

Another thing to think about is when you play full screen games and you get notifications, that don’t hide (ie. error in connecting to email, etc.) it can be disruptive to the game, as you will be unable to click in that location of the screen.

  30. Brian Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 1:32 pm

Oh wait you guys just fixed the docking problem!
    GJ!

How ’bout ‘digsby just got better’ and leave it at that. Outlived most of my contacts on ICQ. I used to talk regularly with people all over the world…great fun. When I moved to the island, I lost most of ‘em. I got a ‘logged out’ message because I ‘logged on to another computer’ message. I’ll get back with you on that. There’s more but for now we’re doin’ great.

  32. Bogdan Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 1:42 pm

    Hey!

Software’s great and it keeps getting better. The latest build fixed the MSN problems (lags in sending messages). How about a “Winamp now playing song” status plugin? That would be great.

Still getting the really slow message scrolling in all of my conversations. I’ve tried cranking down the mouse sensitivity, even tried a different mouse.

  34. Steve Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

@Jake - we fixed this a few builds ago. Are you sure you have the latest version? Anyone else have this issue or does the IM window scroll at normal speed?

@All - we just found one of the bugs that causes CPU to spike (one of the first diagnostic logs since the update gave us a good clue). We will push a tiny update very shortly!

@Skype Users - we would appreciate any feedback on:

  35. Troy Said,

Awsome job everyone! It’s amazing to see so many builds released so frequently.

In the beginning I ran Digsby, MSN and GTalk but I soon realized that Digsby does just about everything I need it to as far as IM is concerned. However, (funny, there’s always a “however”):

I would love to see things like the ability to colour the backgrounds based on user. That way I don’t accidentally type something in my bosses window I meant to send to a fellow employee (yeah, I did that once before, now my bosses window in MSN is red).

How about multiple chat? It would be so nice to invite friend to join the same chat session.

    Twitter? Need I say more?

And of course all the video chat type bells and whistles but I imagine those are quite significant enhancements.

Do you have a road map that you have published so we can all see where you’re currently going with Digsby?

    Thanks again, great app.

    Troy

  36. Millenius Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 2:46 pm

    Steve Said,
@Millenius - you can do that in the “View” menu

I wanna say : hide the full bar… not the “menu” bar.

    For example

    FULL BAR OFF :
    http://ysoudy.free.fr/old/digsby/ok.bmp

    FULL BAR ON :
    http://ysoudy.free.fr/old/digsby/ko.bmp

    new features out the wazoo
build it and they will come (for public release?)
make like a stone and rock
    ill communication
all the taste, 1/3 of the applications
    dude, you’re getting a digsby

    Digsby us my favorite product

I’m on wifi and some time I come back digsby take a long time to reconnect, faster for me is to restart digsby. Would it be great digsby restart it self after discovering new internet connection?

And I want a better way to merge my contacts in different folders, like two list and one is buddies (AIM) and one is Friends (msn) and you let user make them one. Right now it’s one by one drag and drop, too much effort.

New feature? I vote for IRC support. :)

  44. bubazoo Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:20 pm

IRC? you mean people still use that? (shrugs), that is so….90’s man! hehe. I thought that became obsolete with proxy servers. hehe

I was in the middle of downloading build 19, when suddenly, digsy froze on me. nothing else did just digsby, couldn’t tell if it was a CPU spike or not, but I had to press the black “X” to end the program prematurely, then I started it up again, I don’t know if it actually got build 19 since it froze half way into downloading it (shrugs)

  45. Steve Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

@bubazoo - click Help > About Digsby (it should be fine)

@Millenius - I see what you mean. This will be possible when we expand our skinning engine to include skinnable frames (and release the API)

  46. Millenius Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:38 pm

ok steve, and when do you expand the engine ?

  47. Steve Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:40 pm

We are focusing on bugs right now - once digsby is more stable and performance (memory usage) is better we will move back to features.

  48. Jonathan Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:50 pm

How about, for the build titles, you use lines from “Still Alive” in Portal?

“I’m making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS”

  49. Gabor Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 3:53 pm

I’d like to hide the menu-bar (as I can in the View-menu), but have it reappear when I hover 5-10px under it, if you know what I mean?

So I don’t have to look at it, but don’t have to rightclick the trayicon, and enable it, and then go to Digsby and do whatever I wanna do…

Also, greatly increase the speed on MSN file transfers. In Pidgin I get maximum 5kb/s, which is kinda the same as in Digsby. I know it’s difficult, since the data probably must transfer thru the MSN-servers, but maybe some sort of direct connection (peer-to-peer) might work?

  50. Stephen Said,

    February 29, 2008 @ 4:31 pm

@ Dev Steve’s reply to Steve Roberts (A Whole Lot of Steves!)

Webmail links for IMAP accounts would be great! Both my Uni email addresses are IMAP yet also have web-based interfaces. Although I check them through Thunderbird, it would be cool to have the possibility of them linking to their respective websites too.

@Steve Roberts - we thought of doing that but didn’t know if anyone would need the functionality. Do you have webmail access to your IMAP account?

    Steve Roberts (Yep lots of Steve’s - it’s a good name! :D):
I have several POP3 and IMAP accounts, each with different webmail URLs. But if you wanted a global web site for POP3/IMAP access, one I use frequently is mail2web.com - it’s free too!

By the way, just installed the Digsby on a second PC, it was so easy just to sign in and have all my account show up, such a time saver compareed to other programs I have used in the past.

msn bug - cannot delete a contact from my buddy list; can right-click, select delete, then say yes to the dialog box that comes up, but the name doesn’t disappear.

also, feature request: ability to block a contact from the buddy list, instead of going through preferences/privacy and manually typing their email in the block list.

  57. Steve Said,

    March 1, 2008 @ 11:19 am

@Cat - can you submit a diagnostic log using Help > Send Bug Report after making the MSN bug happen. As for block from the buddy list we temporarily removed it and will bring it back shortly.

You guys should include the feature for MSN that shows what song you are playing in itunes.

  60. Andrew Said,

    March 2, 2008 @ 12:32 pm

    Some feature ideas:
    Chat room feature for MSN
    Nudges for MSN
    Web Cam support
Able to import/edit skins into digsby to use (the 2 current ones need some friends)
    Spell Check
Seperate Satus messages for each account
    RSS reader
    Text message support
More integrated facebook possibly (ability to ignore or accept requests inside of digsby, or write messages inside digsby)
Be able to read your email in a digsby window rather then launching a internet browser
    more services
Just some ideas hope that you like/implement them

  61. Doc Said,

    Hi there,

First of all Digsby is really great.

But one important thing is really missing. When there is a icq request received from someone you don’t know, you just see the icq no. There should be a link to open the person details before you accept or decline it.

I hope this will be implemented in future?

    Greetz,
    Doc

  62. Hunter Said,

    March 3, 2008 @ 12:01 am

    Thanks for the fix.

Digsby still doesn’t display IMs from Chinese users of MSN for me, not sure what could be that cause of that particular bug.

  63. Jordan Said,

    March 3, 2008 @ 1:03 am

I use Digsby for Gmail and other email-like systems (Facebook, MySpace) but not chat. Small request: can I have the option to NOT display the buddy list window on startup?

You know what I would *really* like? An option to forward Facebook and MySpace messages to my primary email address, complete with a Digsby-hosted temporary “from” email address that I can reply to. I hate how the social networks have splintered the compatibility of email, and this would solve this problem beautifully.

  64. Jordan Said,

    March 3, 2008 @ 1:09 am

I have a problem–the MySpace module is perennially disconnected–the “connection lost”.

  65. Steve Said,

    March 3, 2008 @ 10:35 am

@Jordan - there is a very good chance that it is the MySpace servers or an Internet connection problem. If it continues email us at bugs@digsby.com

  66. terrorbite Said,

One simple feature I’d like is to be able to sort contacts by status, in the order Available, Idle, Away. At the moment, it’s Available, Away, Idle and it doesn’t look right to me :)

Also, I noticed my laptop’s fan has been pretty loud recently, and when I checked the Task Manager, Digsby was using around 50% of my CPU! (I’ve got a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz). MSN used to use 0% when idle.

And in the past day or so, I’ve been getting Digsby messages saying it’s running slow? I submitted the diagnostic logs when that happened.

  67. SC Said,

    March 3, 2008 @ 2:51 pm

Hi, Thanks for the digsby app and let me participate in beta.

-Main reason for me to use DIGSBY is the ability to have in one running IM app, different AIM, MSN and Yahoo accounts at same time.
this is because i have personal, family, business1, business2, bussiness3 with some accounts in each.
What i miss (or cant find) is a way to mantain SEPARATE TABS for each of MY accounts, and of course inside them arrange them by groups as usual. But in this moment i have all online contacts in one large list, this is insane and non useful.
Each of these “tabs” must allow me to hide me/show me/ away me/ busy, states and choose independtly.
Thene in the General Options properties, user can choose to display or not accounts in separate TABS or mix all contacts in ONE large list.

    - A very useful feature not common in IM’s is the ability to have personal LABELS to flag contacts.
    example:
    VIP Contact GoldStar or something
    Sellsman Contact RedSquare or something
College friends, a beer jar :) or something

    THANKS
