Build 87 – Private Alpha Release

We’re excited to release Build 87 (r29615 r29662 r29781 r29788 r29807) to ALPHA testers which includes lots of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Facebook Notifications: We’ve added support for Facebook Notifications including popup alerts for new notifications and the ability to view the full list of notifications within the Facebook newsfeed
  • New Ad Options: You can now change the placement of the ads inside the IM window (top/bottom/left/right) and you can also disable Flash ads if they cause performance issues or the animation is bothersome (Preferences > Conversations)
  • Crash Fixes: We took some time to hunt down and fix some of the most common crash causing bugs, some of which were introduced in the last release

We’d like to get this build stabilized as quickly as possible so we can get it released to all users so if you run into any bugs please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com. We’ll keep pushing to make Digsby even better and greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word!

If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then. We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

Update 1 (2/1/2011 12:00pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch potentially fixing a  newly introduced crash causing bug.  We have other fixes ready to go out but wanted to isolate this issue first to make sure it is fixed.  The new release number is 29662.

Update 2 (2/11/2011 10:30am EST): We just pushed out a patch to ALPHA testers fixing all the issues that have been reported so far. Let us know if you run into more bugs so we can get this release wrapped up and pushed out to all users. The new release number is 29781 and changes include:

  • Fixed a bug that caused Facebook Alerts count to not go down when Notifications get marked as read
  • Fixed a bug that caused sounds not to play for Facebook Notifications or Group Chat Invites
  • Fixed a bug that caused ICQ privacy lists not to show if unicode names somehow made it on to them
  • Fixed a bug that caused the now playing status to get stuck in some rare cases
  • Fixed a bug that caused artifacts to show up in the IM window if you set ads to vertical mode
  • Fixed a bug that caused Twitter to get stuck reconnecting in some cases
  • Fixed a bug that caused AIM privacy changes to not show if you re-open the Preferences window after changing them
  • Fixed a bug that caused plugins to stop loading if one of them fails to load for some reason
  • Fixed a bug that made it possible to open more than one bug reporter dialog at a time
  • Small optimization for loading the Preferences window
  • Warn ICQ users if they try to type a password that is longer than 8 characters (ICQ password limit)

Update 3 (2/11/2011 4:15pm EST): One more small patch fixing a bug with the LinkedIn newsfeed takes the release number to 29788.  Pending any new bugs this build will go out to all users early next week.

Update 4 (2/14/2011 4:45pm EST): We just pushed out another patch fixing a few small bugs with the About Dialog and Facebook newsfeeds. The new release number is 29807.

can't install it this morning - install hangs after unchecking enable digsby donates.

  • Can you try installing Digsby from here - http://install.digsby.com . If that doesn't work, can you email us at bugs@digsby.com?

  • Loving the new support for Facebook notifications. What about a link on the Facebook window to switch between notifications and news feed even when there are no new notifications?

  • There should be a link in the top-right of the newsfeed that says "Back to Newsfeed" that lets you switch between them. Does this help?

  • just saw this on the "News Feed" drop down actually. great work!

  • Gonzalo Brusella

I'm still getting a LOT of spam contact request from ICQ and Yahoo...

Can this be fixed to not allow more requests?

  • Check your Privacy settings to see if you've selected "Allow only users on my contact list". Let us know if this helps!

  • Gonzalo Brusella

ICQ has that checkbox checked it and still a lot of spam.

Yahoo hadn't (only 2 options, now I changed that to a more secure setting)

  • ThaName

still see that annoying msn bug, digsby ask all the time to add/autorize buddies using MSN enterprise ( dunno the exact name of the msn enterprises use). Besides that, all is A Ok

  • Great work, but when you support the facebook chat's possibility that allow you to put only certain groups of friends offline?

  • Dude1985

cool, fellas. hv you upgraded msn protocol to fix file transer issues?? keep up the good work. XD

  • vietiso

I've put it in the main app folder, and the res folder with other yaml files, as well as the lib folder...
I'd rather not dump it into every stinking folder in the Digsby tree of directories to figure out where exactly it's supposed to be. http://www.vietiso.com i will do it..

  • I would love to have an Android version.

  • Rosie

    what about web cam

  • Dale

I dream of the day for a Mac.... 3 years and still waiting...

  • gumdealer328

My aol mail has been stuck at connecting for almost 12 hours now. Even after this update. I can log in to AOL mail just fine on the website. Is this a bug? Thanks

  • Can you submit a bug report regarding this? Click Help > Submit Bug Report

  • Jeff

I hope that after these features & fixes go public, the next alpha release will FINALLY include portable support (USB drives, etc) for testing.

  • We just released the installer for this. :) More info on our forum here - http://forum.digsby.com/vie...

  • Jeff

By the way, I think you might want to make a blog post or something more visible so that those wanting to test the portable device install option know that an alpha version of this is finally available. Unless they happen to read thru these comments, many people might not catch it.

  • Jeff

Thank you very much. I've already installed on a USB drive using the Portable option and will be testing...

  • Johan Gutierrez Diaz

Good work, waiting for skype im features....

  • Jeff

I would absolutely LOVE to see this too. That would be right up there with portable support.

  • Still waiting cross-platform.

  • Scott B

I get a ton of icq authorization request spam. 99% of it is in cyrillic or has HTML markup in it. Since neither of these are things that I ever want to see, I'd LOVE to be able to block these somehow. Any chance we can get a feature to do something like this in a future digsby version?

  • Riccardo Ulpts

Well digsby is pretty slow for me compared to trillian and uses a lot more system ressources :-(

  • How much is Digsby using? Can you submit a bug report the next time it seems high for you? Click Help > Submit Bug Report

  • great options, digsby rocks, but i'm waiting 2 years for a linux client. digsby is so much better than any other chat cient but i can't use it on linux. sad.

  • Shukaido

soo, I grabbed the file to be an alpha tester, and... it doesn't seem to be updating me...

I've put it in the main app folder, and the res folder with other yaml files, as well as the lib folder...
I'd rather not dump it into every stinking folder in the Digsby tree of directories to figure out where exactly it's supposed to be.

Where, exactly, in a default install should a person put the tag.yaml file to get alpha updates?

  • The file goes in \Program Files\Digsby . Once you put the file in here, go to Help > About Digsby and click on the little Digsby icon to force an update check - http://imgur.com/DhBRP . The latest Alpha build right now is Build 29662. Let us know if this works!

  • pb_virus

My digsby never shows me as idle :(
the let others know when i am idle option is also checked, but it doesn't show me as idle even when i am sleeping for 7 hrs. My friends just complaint that i am there and not responding. Is anyone else getting the same problem

  • For some reason Digsby isn't seeing that your computer is idle. Could you submit a bug report the next time you catch this so we can help you out? Click Help > Submit Bug Report

  • Gustavo

Congratulations for the excellent work! I hope that someday they can give us the news that they have developed an application for Android.

  • tuexss

I don't get it. Your support told me, that a bug I reported has been fixed already, the website tells me, that digsby has auto-update (which worked fine in the past) but no updates arrive and the bug still is here.

  • We push out fixes/changes to Alpha users first to test and then to all Digsby users. Did Steve mention what build number you should have? The bug fix may not have gone out to everyone yet.

  • Ran

Just wanted to tell you guys that i am now running with ads for almost a week straight and it's nice and doesn't bother me. Think i'll leave them on for the time being (No flash ads and positioned to the left).

  • Thanks for the support! I position the ads on the left as well! :)

  • Ran

Also, as this Alpha version is concerned, it's running well! Haven't encountered a bug yet. :). You guys ROCK!

  • Gonzalo Brusella

    Just my 2 cents:

Good one on the ads positioning and the avoidance of flash ads.

Now I see some config options (disabled) on some of the yaml files for a possible IRC Client. Is tehre a way to do aplha testing of that?

  • Soulstrm

good ideea with positioning ads. bottom ads were very annouing for me. 2 features i'd like to see implemented. group broadcast(or individual select multiple contacts) message, and an option to modify stealth setting to a hole group not only individual contacts. regards

  • Cup3ake

You should make add option to change background (color/image) for the chat area without editing css. And let us turn off contacts count in group headlines in c/list.

  • I have to say, I didn't use the ads before because I thought they were very intrusive where they were. But with the option to move them around, I will definitely support you guys by leaving them on. I love your product and since I don't have any money to donate, I like to help in any other way possible. (The research module has be active on my home computer since you instated that as an option)

  • Ocepi

Did you make any Jabber protocol changes? I am unable to connect to my Openfire server after this update. I looked through the change-log, but didn't see anything.

  • Could you submit a bug report regarding this? Click Help > Submit Bug Report

  • Ocepi

    Disregard, it's working fine now.

  • Wam

    can u delete chat history??

  • Yes, they are stored in Computer Username\Documents\Digsby Logs\ . Let us know if this helps!

  • Cire516

Just something that has been kind of bugging me with the status icons with gtalk contacts. It appears green for online buddies, red if they're busy, and orange if they're idle -- which is fine, except if a buddy is busy and idle - it just appears red.

The only reason this bothers me is I have a friend that always keeps her status as busy, but it'd be nice to know if she was idle or not. It just always stays red for her. If the choice is between the idle (orange) icon or the busy (red) icon for users who are both idle and busy, I'd prefer to see the idle (orange) icon.

I hope that makes sense, lol.

  • Definitely makes sense. "Idle" status should supersede all other status states in Digsby though. Could you submit a bug report the next time you catch this? This sends a diagnostic log to show us what Digsby is doing. Click Help > Submit Bug Report . Thanks!

  • Ran

Ads on the left=Much Better than at bottom. Also very good for the ''No Flash Ads''! I like it! Cheers. Still wouldn't mind paying for Digsby, though (Reasonable price).

  • Glad you're happy with the ad options!

  • Tearfulrequiem

Just downloaded the new file and I love it already. Can't wait to see how I feel about it in the long run/what Digsby will come out with next....

  • sweet!

  • Rally25rs

I put 'tag.yaml' into C:\Program Files\Digsby\ and restarted Digsby, but it didn't do an auto-update. I had to manually click the "Help | About Digsby" menu item, and in the About box, it showed the "Update Available" link that I had to click.

  • Digsby will check for an update about five minutes after login.

  • uninstalling

Why does this thing take up 384,500K of memory, great app...I will be uninstalling

  • Digsby shouldn't be taken up that much memory. If you still have Digsby installed, could you submit a bug report regarding this? This sends a diagnostic log on why this may be happening. Click Help > Submit Bug Report

  • uninstalling

I turned off the ads and started working, I really don't want ads under my IM anyway, I get enough of those all over the web.

  • CRACING

Where should I place the tag.yaml file? What do you mean by main program folder? :S

    I tried \Program Files\Digsby\ and \Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Digsby but still doesn't work. Digsby doesn't auto update. :(

  • Main program folder for Digsby is \Program Files\Digsby . This screenshot may help - http://imgur.com/9afGI . Let us know if it does!

  • Flo

Still no usable history search :(
But thanks for the great update anyways!

  • Jeff

I agree. They really need to add a usable search for chat history. It doesn't have to be fancy. I would like it to support wildcards (*) to aid in searching.

  • Ocepi

If you're on Windows Vista or 7, the Windows search utility does an excellent job. Browse to the logs folder C:\Users\Username\Documents\Digsby Logs\digsbyusername\accounttype\accountname and then type your search in the search box. It will search inside all of the .html files for all of your contacts, works a treat.

  • When will the android alpha be available?

  • (1) Are the ads opt-in by default now?

    (2) Have you yet developed a windows binary without malware that relies solely on donated CPU cycles?

  • Digsby does not contain malware at all. The research module runs in a secure sandbox environment and does not touch the hard drive at all.

The user sees a pop-up the first time the research module runs. The pop-up explaining the module does not go away until the user interacts with it. It also links to our FAQ explaining what it is doing (http://wiki.digsby.com/doku....

  • Ah! The new add placements work much better, thank you!

  • Digsby

Did you go with top, left or right?

  • I have stopped using Digsby as of about a month ago in favor of Trillian, as the complete and utter failure to address the bug causing stuttering in full screen games became too much of a hassle to deal with. Until I see a fix listed in the changelog, I am sticking with Trillian. It offers identical functionality, better stability, AND I can smoothly without closing the application.

  • Digsby

Dustin - that issue is caused by a bug in Windows, not in Digsby. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do on our end without digging REALLY deeply into low level Windows calls to try to bypass the problem somehow and even then it may be weeks of digging with no results. It happens when Digsby asks the operating system whether a full screen application is running and Windows stutters.

  • groundy1102

Is it possible for Digsby to mark the FB notifications as read once I have open FB newsfeed? ;)

  • If you click on the drop-down menu in the newsfeed and select "Notifications", Digsby will mark them all as read. Not sure if you have Facebook in the icon tray, but the notification number won't go away until Facebook refreshes. We're working on fixing that though.

  • groundy1102

Yes, I have Facebook in icon tray, and the NUMBER won't disappear immediately after Digsby marks notifications as read.
Thank you for going to fix it though ;)

  • Port

nice work giving us the option to disable animated/flash ads, I will definitely reenable the ads now.

  • Thank you for the support!

  • Felipe_Machado

loved the idea to disable the flash ad, now they will not break my focus anymore. thanks guys and keep up the good job!!!

  • No problem! Thank you for the support!

  • Jeff

I'm probably a fool for asking since we keep being told it is being tested and is right around the corner, but will be actually see portable support in the next month or two? I'm hesitant to ask since we have been told it was being tested since late November when you unveiled the new auto-update system, but I'm hoping that broken promises will finally be fulfilled soon.

  • Digsby

It's pretty much ready but it is a bit slow on some USB sticks so we are optimizing it now to get it ready for user testing.

  • Jeff

Thank you for the feedback. Release the alpha/beta version as soon as you can and I know many will be happy to pound away on it.

  • Epaka

Totally diggin' the Notification Updates. That's just awesome. Good work gentlemen!

  • Happy you like it! Thank you for the support! :)

  • Ok question: what would i have to enter in a given sound.yaml for the FB-Notification-notification?
is it the facebook-alert, or something new?

  • facebook_notifications should do it. we'll add it in the 'official' sound set for the next update.

  • sounds like a good upgrade. fb notifications and no more flashing adds.

  • 123

enabled the ads on the left... will see how this goes :)

  • koch

Still waiting for a Linux version :'(

  • i'm pretty sure i'm going to like the notifications notification. that was something i missed for facebook.
Let's see how the non-annoying ads are...

  • Well, the notification notifications are great, i still don't like ads in the windows (but they aren't scaring people walking by away now).

  • Looking forward to getting this in the stables. Good work guys.

  • Good work!

  • Dumitrudan608

Do you think there will be a buzz like feature in digsby, like in yahoo messenger? Sometimes i find the lack of it quite disturbing. You have no way of drawing attention.

  • Possibly, it's been one of our most highly requested IM features so we're giving it some thought. Not sure when it will make it in though.
