Build 48 – Private Alpha Release
We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 48, r20416 r20432 r20444 r20453 r20559) which introduces tons of bug fixes and enhancements. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:
- Added a “Local Mode” which saves all account info on your machine and uses that if Digsby is unable to connect to our servers to synchronize preferences. Next time Digsby is able to log in, everything is synchronized. Please let us know if you run into any issues with this feature.
- Fixed several major memory leaks in Digsby and currently hunting down the remaining ones.
- Added support for the new Hotmail protocol.
- Yahoo Protocol now uses their load balancers for more reliable login.
If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then. We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.
As always, thank you for all the feedback and enjoy the new build. If you experience any bugs please email us at bugs@digsby.com or use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log. If you have any suggestions, please email us at features@digsby.com.
Update 1 (12:00pm EST, 2/17/2009): We are working on fixing a few bugs that have been reported in this alpha and will push out a release shortly. If you have contacts showing up as duplicates, are having trouble connecting via proxy to some services, or can’t log in to ICQ and are in Germany, those issues will be fixed in a patch shortly.
Update 2 (12:30pm EST 2/17/2009): We just pushed out a patch fixing the above issues. If you were having proxy issues you may need to reinstall since auto-update could fail for you.
Update 3 (7:00pm EST 2/17/2009): We just pushed out another small patch fixing two bugs that were reported. One caused your accounts to not show on login in rare cases and another caused the “Typing” notification to stay at the top of the IM window even after someone stopped typing.
Update 4 (10:00am EST 2/18/2009): One more patch fixing a bug with the IM window. Please let us know if there are any remaining newly introduced issues with this alpha.
Update 5 (11:00am EST 2/20/2009): Another small patch fixing a couple remaining IM window bugs and a bug with messaging WLM buddies after they go idle. Also, Yahoo Protocol now uses their load balancers for more reliable login.

Awesome! Now, any suggestions for testing a “fail to connect, use local authentication” scenario without taking down your servers, or unplugging my network connection thereby disabling IM’s from connecting to their servers?
i’d be happy to try it out.

It is fantastic to hear that you’ve already incorporated a “local mode” so quickly!

@ Joe T.
Edit your hosts file to redirect all Digsby server addresses to 127.0.0.1. Unfortunately, I don’t know the addresses Digsby uses.
Does anyone have a list?

@Joe T.
I would think perhaps changing your local HOST file so that digsby’s servers point to 127.0.0.1 or something to that effect.
only question is to the digsby crew: what servers do we need to block out so that it fails and we can use the local authentication?

Perfect. Fixed the report as spam for hotmail also!

Great! I use Digsby already a long time, and it is great to see you got the memory footprint down that much although providing a load of additional features! Keep on that good work!
2 problems: icq does not sign in (official client does, i’m from germany) and the style for the popup is not that one of my skin (vista) anymore (already deleted and copied again, didn’t help).

I would be happy to test that as well. Tell me how I can help. Great job.

How bout Linux and Mac??? I don’t have a Windoze machine but I really want to use your product!!!!
Digsby Said,
February 17, 2009 @ 11:34 am
@All: Unfortunately changing your host file won’t work. It will still do the DNS lookup. You may want to have a firewall temporarily block Digsby as you log in to test it.
Bug: We are going to push a quick patch shortly that will fix the issue some of you have reported where buddies show up multiple times on the buddy list.
kenneth Said,

@Digsby,
If you use a firewall to block the application, it won’t allow it to even connect to the Internet, so I don’t know if that’ll work.
I did some digging around and found out that rit.edu hosts the Digsby servers today. Try blocking *.rit.edu entirely with your firewall (using a custom-created rule) instead of blocking the application.

After upgrading to the latest Alpha Release I cannot get my YIM account to connect as well as my Gmail email account and my Facebook “Social Network” account.
Using the “Help > Send Bug Report” failed also. After submission I got “There was a problem submitting your bug report.”
Just thought I would report the issue in case others are experiencing the same thing.
Thank you for the wonderful product.

The new alpha has one glaring bug! There are about 100 duplicates of some contacts on my buddy list. For example I see John Doe about 50 times on my list!

Is there any way we can get local mode as an option? ie use Digsby in remote mode OR use Digsby in local mode? I only ever use Digsby on one machine, so I really don’t need everything synced to the cloud. (And if I did need to use it on two machines, I could switch sync on and then go).
Please?

digsby just crashed hard and told me i had to reinstall it.
Jared Said,
February 17, 2009 @ 9:32 pm
Running 20444. I blocked http://*.digsby.* in my firewall and watching the logs, I saw the following:
DENY URL HTTP GET http://update.digsby.com/update.yaml?1234923713
DENY URL HTTP GET http://login1.digsby.org:80/load/all/json
DENY URL HTTP GET http://login2.digsby.org:80/load/all/json
Digsby then loaded, connected to all my services, and I was able to chat with no problem. So, local mode appears to be working.
However, it would be nice to have some way to see if Digsby is in fact running in local mode – a popup might be too much… maybe something on the About window?
Just a thought – thanks again, guys!

I’m having an issue where I can only open a chat window once. If I close the chat window, I cannot open another chat window until I restart Digsby. This has been happening since I updated to the most recent alpha build.
I have already reported the bug. Unfortunately it makes it pretty much impossible to chat, unless I plan on keeping a window open all the time, so I will have to revert to the beta client for the time being. I can use a buggy alpha but not a broken one. Sorry guys!

Is there any chance you’ll fix the Satin theme to not make my contacts’ text smaller? It is the only conversation theme to do this as far as I know. (I can fix it by editing the defaults.css, but that’s overwritten on every update.. I’d also expect either my or my contact’s setting to overwrite the default)

I tried to add a POP account to digsby today, and it gives me an error saying “no system email client is configured”
what does that mean? does that mean that POP account I added has to have an associated default email client to go along with it? cuz that kinda sucks, I kinda thought a basic email window would be built into digsby, like it is when u send from webmail accounts *shrugs*

Hi, with this alpha release my MSN connection sometimes freezes, so like for example, when I try to chat to someone it will say “there was a network error trying to create the conversation” or something to that effect. When I restart the MSN component or Digsby itself it works again for a while before doing it again. Also during the time it remains in this freezed time period I never receive IMs from other people and it doesn’t tell me if anyone’s signed on to MSN. Does anyone have any fixes?
Brad Ball Said,

@mrpossible – Group chat has been “near the top of the todo list” for close to a year now. I’ve pretty much given up on it. They keep saying “1 more release of bug fixes, then we’ll add features and group chat is very near the top” … But we keep getting more and more releases with no sign of group chat anywhere … Sigh …

I am a new Digsby user and, although I think it is already a great software, but there is a VITAL feature missing: contact search!
When adding up every IM software and social media service in Digsby, I have more than 400 contacts. I guess many people have even more. It is not practical at all to browse one by one to find the person I am willing to chat with.
Also, there are cronical problems with file transfers. Most of the time I simply can’t either receive or send files to my contacts using Digsby. The times it worked, the transfer rate was unacceptably low, about 1 Kbs…
Thank you,
Digsby Said,
February 20, 2009 @ 10:38 am
@Alexis: That will be added very soon! For now, if you start typing a person’s name it will jump to it in the list.
@homez99: Fixed and going out in an update shortly.
@bubazoo: That means your email program isn’t set to be the default email program in windows (ie: Outlook). Email checking will work but launching your mail client when you click “Inbox” won’t. Go into your mail client’s preferences and set it to be your default mail application.
@Brad Ball: We are as eager as you are to add it…

just found what i’d like to consider a “show stopping” bug, when i send someone a “less than 3″ emote it shows the googly heart face guy, but when someone “less than 3’s” me i get no such emote.
this is basically breaking up all of my online relationships, i’m going to blame the broken hearts and tears on digsby if this is not addressed within the next 12 builds.
you’ve been warned!

Any chance of modifying the Gmail alert settings adjusted to notify of new email that has been told to skip the inbox and be archived? Currently, only messages in the inbox or spam folders produce a notification. I have Gmail setup to use IMAP and I would love to not have to set up an IMAP notification that would not take me to Gmail if necessary. Gmail explains that the changes affect the iPhone too:
https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702
I do not know if that will help explain what I mean. Keep up the great work; I love Digsby and have been convincing everyone I know to switch to it.
Thanks,
Chris

I’m sure they are tired of hearing about group chat, but it’s a major issue for most of us. I’m using trillian, but I plan to switch to digsby the second this feature is added! I’m sure digsby will get a ton of new users once this is added.
