Build 77 – Taste the Rainbow!

We just pushed an update (Build 77,  r27050) to all users which includes tons of new features, bug fixes and enhancements.  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • Multiformatting: You can now change formatting options like bold, italics, underline and font on a per-character basis instead of just a per-message basis
  • Smarter To/From: If you have multiple accounts of the same protocol, the “From” dropdown in the IM window will not pre-select or fall back to accounts that don’t have that person on their buddy list
  • Status Tagging: We’ve made it easier to spread the word about Digsby by letting you add a Digsby link to the end of your status messages.  You will be notified about this on login with instructions on how to enable/disable it via Preferences > Status
  • Bit.ly: We’re transitioning our http://digs.by URL shortener to use bit.ly’s white label service.  Any digs.by URLs made from now on are interchangeable with bit.ly links that have the same ending

Now that multiformatting is live, group chat and mac/linux releases are the next major projects we’re going to tackle.  We are also going to be launching a brand new “communication product” in the near future (top secret!) so keep your ears perked for more news on that!  Let us know what you think of this release in the comments and feel free to speculate on what you think we’ll be launching.

If you run into any bugs please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.  We’ll keep pushing to make Digsby even better and greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word!

I've been checking through the website every single week since i started using ubuntu this past 6 month.. i really love digsby...
and really dying to get my hands on Digsby for Linux. I wish it will come out very soon.......
  • a8def58ba5
True, "Promote" is an optional feature, but one which is hidden from the user and on by default. I've had two friends tell me they don't want it on, but then still don't figure out how to turn it off. The average user doesn't dig through menus to change something they never see. So much the better for Digsby, eh?

You might have justifications for this approach, it probably appears completely benign in internal discussions. But I'm just saying it freaks some of us out.

All you have to do is either make it more obvious to the user OR make it off by default. All things considered, that's a pretty low hurdle to appear way less shady.

But like I said, maybe you lose 1% of us tinfoil hat wearing users with this, but 10% of your users promotions get one of their friends on board. If those are the numbers, you've got to do what you've got to do. I'm just one guy, and you can't please everyone.
  • Digsby
What can we do to make it easier for users to find the option and disable it if they want it off?
  • Thomas
I was going to install Digsby, I'd used it in the past, and heard some good recommendations from friends about new features. Then I saw four friends on upgrade day with a canned message in their status.

No thanks, I don't want to look like a shill. Take that away, I'll come back, and I'll push the product on others by good old fashioned word of mouth.

If you're getting more people than you're losing with this, more power to you, just not my thing.
  • Digsby
It is an optional feature - it's the top checkbox in Preferences > Status.
  • David
Yet another user DYING to get my hands on Digsby for Linux! I tried it under Wine and it really just isn't work so fantastically. It sorta worked... but not very well.
  • hergeekness
Thanks Digsby Team for the wonderful upgrade! Keep up the great work!
  • Gopi Shankar
I reported a bug, that i could not share image using Twitter and the response from digsby was, it will be working in the next release, but still the bug is not rectified. Im disappointed that this simple feature is not available right now, because of this i could not share images. Make sure that this simple feature will available in the next release.(This is thrid time im writting it to digsby)
  • Digsby
It sounds like you didn't get the latest update. Download and run the latest installer from our website.
  • danacKY
    I can't wait for a Mac version!!! WOOHOO (and a mobile app :-) )
  • Kana
ok, so big list of requests for features... figured I would consolidate the major ones I've seen...

    *Skype
*Google Wave / Buzz / Voice / Reader
*app for mobile phones / iphone
    *group chat
*portable digsby - for flash drives, etc.
*ability to change Digsby installation directory
*pop-up notifications - aero glass, transparency (optional?)
*multilanguage version - portuguese brazilian language?
    *more skins
*fully functional audio/video interface with other IM services without having to use tokbox
*add an "Exit Digsby" option when you right click on Digsby in the taskbar
    *secure chat option
    *IRC
    *"start digsby minimized" ability
    *document sharing / file sending
    *buddy pounce
    *"nudge" feature
*blogging utility (posting to blog sites via digsby)
    *Yammer service?
*retrieve current conversation by clicking on contact's sn - w/out storing convo to hard drive

    Linux / Mac builds

hope that helps for consolidation purposes. Keep up the good work!
  • winston856
Another fantastic update! Still waiting for google talk file transfers though, then digsby would be perfect in my eyes.
  • fstpre222
Any chance we'll be able to close an IM and retrieve the current conversation by clicking on the contact's screen name? I know this can be done with the logging feature, but what about if we don't want to store conversations to the hard drive? I know this can be done with AOL Instant Messanger...
  • I think that the status message had quite the negative effect on my friends. I actually dismissed your message about the change as a update notification that had no relevance to my interests.

But then the messages started to pour in from my friends as they notified that my status was basically spamming. Now i feel that i cannot even recommend digsby to my friends in the future as they know that it might spam people at any moment. It gave my friends an image of a unreliable software. I also now feel shame about using it.

Then how could you prevent this in my honest opinion? Instead of crying wolf with those random im-messages when you update stuff, please make a notification that has a clear Opt in/out buttons for features. Some people might even click yes.
Also, it was quite shady that you didn't show the status spam in the status itself, i had no idea what had happened because it only showed to other people.
  • Digsby
Sorry you feel that way. The reason you don't see the message in your status is because it's a Digsby promo message and you already use Digsby. There's no reason to promote Digsby to an existing Digsby user.
  • Katja
By that logic there is no reason for you to see your status messages at all, as you already know them.
  • FCD
RSS Google Reader please and transparency for popup !!!!!
  • mrlazl1346
    very good
  • Revolutions
Last time I checked, the digsby formatting doesn't work on Gmail chat [like if I'm talking to someone on gtalk/gmail]. Is this something I'm doing wrong or a bug? Is it fixed in this release?
  • Digsby
Gmail just doesn't support formatting - limitation on their end. If the other person uses Digsby or another Jabber client that supports formatting to log into their Gtalk account, then they will see it.
  • darkelf00101
Looking forward to Skype integration too !!!!!
  • chippermonkey
I have only one question, since I'm loving the product so far:

With the inclusion of group chat, finally, will you guys be working on adding, maybe, IRC to Digsby? It's a very simple protocol to add and would add a lot to the product, for me. I'm a huge nerd. :)
  • aykut
we are waiting for linux version. Please hurry up!
  • mahmoudsoliman
برنامج جميل وفوق رائع و يتخطى كل الصعاب
  • renaissance247
I haven't noticed it on Digsby but I may have missed it...

But would Digsby be able to access Yahoo! Chatrooms sometime in the future? It would be nice, so I don't have to use Yahoo!'s actual messenger when I want to go into one. Trillian's done it for years so I know it's possible for a third-party messenger.
  • Digsby
    We're working on that now.
  • dakingof
Seems that people on facebook are not getting my facebook chat messages! Is it just me???
  • Digsby
Most likely a temporary issue with their servers. Submit a bug report if it does not resolve itself.
  • Love Digsby and love how it just keeps getting better and better..
  • liverslury
Digsby downloaded the update yesterday, but none of the new features were working. I checked in Help->About and realized it was still on build 26376. So I tried uninstalling Digsby & downloading it fresh from your website - but it is still at 27376!

How can I get the latest version?
  • Digsby
The latest installer on the website should install the new version but it looks like auto-update isn't kicking in for a small portion of users. We're working on fixing that now.
  • degentd
I'm a proud user of Digsby! I love the short release/update periods, i love that i'm informed very dense about improvements, enhancements! Thanx for this awesome tool!

    regards, zoli
  • Digsby will become more famous than twitter in the future with all the progress.
  • pawelm
I don't know if this is a issue with this version, but today (for about 10 hrs) I don't see any of my friends on the list in the facebook chat in digsby. And even I don't see "facebook chat' list header. I'm surely sign in into fb chat and I've restarted Digsby client several times.
    Pawel
  • Digsby
It may be a temporary issue with their servers. We'll be switching to a new set of Jabber based servers that they recently created, which will be much more stable.
  • Hmmm......Digsby for BlackBerry? Now THAT would be awesome!
  • AnonAuthor
To each of these "improvements," I say bfd. However, having Skype on Digsby would indeed be a BIG FREAKING DEAL! And in fact, adding Skype first would impact far more people than combined releases Linux and Mac versions. As a Linux user myself, I really don't care for a Linux version of Digsby before seeing Skype on the Windows version.
  • freddyhernandez
Awesome job! I've never used a more reliable multi-client messenger ever! And so customizable too! I use mine like a desktop phone list at work every day. I have everyone separated by department and a group for friends and another for family. It caters very well to my mild compulsive organization disorder.

SOOOO much looking forward to the next release with group chat!!! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning to arrive!
  • Funsho
Cool. I've eventually gotten some of my friends to use Digsby and they always call me to express their delight. Thanx.
  • Largo
    Thanks. Digsby is awesome!
    Great work guys!

  • Bile
Can you please implement more advanced logging?
  • Digsby
Definitely on the to do list
  • Warwagon
I love digsby. The only feature I would really like to see and have been waiting for since day one is the ability to have it "automatically" alphabetize the away messages. I know you can drag and drop them, but if you always make new ones its kind of a pain in the ass. So that is the one feature I would love to see.
  • DigsbyFan
How about disabling the research module option? Is it necessary I disable it every time I launch Digsby? I expect it to be disabled the next time I run the application but this is not the case.
  • Digsby
That should absolutely not happen! Please submit a bug report after login using the Help menu showing it enabled in a screenshot.
  • timeWalker
There is one bug that sucks really... If I want to move an IM contact per drag and drop into an other group and the other client needs a athorization for that, the contact disapears. Thats a really, really serious bug.. :( hope you fix it soon.
But without that, Digsby is my favorite IM client, good work! ;)
  • Digsby
Can't reproduce this - can you submit a bug report using the Help menu after getting it to happen and mention who you dragged from what group into what group in the description.
  • Nice enhancements, but was hoping to see a new service or two, in particular Yammer, as we are using both in our business and would love to have only one client for all our IM/Social/Notification needs. Are you working on inclusion of Yammer for a future release?
  • Digsby
We do plan to add more social networks in the future starting with the largest ones.
  • TheAscendedOne
I'm obsessed with my 'Onion Head' emotions; Will Digsby support custom emotions in the future?
  • Digsby
We don't officially support them but you can find instructions on our forum for how to add them
  • vitor
omg linux version on th way?? YAAAYY pidgin and empathy will be left behind when digsby arrives!! :D
  • soulsinner
    yay from me tooo.. woohooo~~~~!!!!
  • Anon
Why not fix that ICQ bug that means your password has to be 8 chars long for some obscure reason?
  • Digsby
It's not a bug. ICQ servers don't allow passwords longer than 8 characters. If you think your password is longer than 8 characters just type the first 8. That's your actual password.
  • thanks for the great update!
This is one of my favorite softwares on my netbook!
  • vladbalmos
is there any chance you will implement the "Yahoo buzz" feature?
  • Digsby
Most likely in the future - it's on a lower priority list.
  • skype support, just for chatting as a starting point plz!!!
  • tomi
since this update my PC goes to blue screen and i'm down, i cant use it no longer!
    using windows xp
    i need it back . . .
  • Digsby
No other reports like this. Try restarting your computer and reinstalling Digsby but I don't think it is Digsby related.
  • czpukmen
i have the same problem on win7.
  • czpukmen
sorry, my mistake. praoblem was not connected with digsby :)
  • macuache
mike, Digsby Developer said long time ago that developers put an option when mail icon appears in tray only when there is a new mail, to the "list of stuff we should have had months ago?"

So ? The same with task bar flashing which is super annoying.

These are the highly needed features.
  • Digsby
But not highly requested. We don't want to overload Digsby with hundreds of options so it is too complex for the average user and it becomes a techie product. There are plenty of IM products out there for that audience. We'll add an advanced preferences section in the future and these options will be there but it won't go in the main interface just because a few dozen people requested it while over 2 million will never use it.
  • macuache
oops. surely that's miranda, of course.
  • Digsby
    no comment ;)
  • macuache
Well, believe me these two options cost more than many other minor options
    Digsby provide.
For example. multicolors and multifonts are not crucial for the user. As
most people want to see the one font settings for all contacts (except for
    children).

I'm sure that there are not plenty of IM with that kind of options. Let's be
honest Merinda can be regarded as the Digsby's only competitor in Windows.

I chose Digsby as I like it and I told about it to many of my friends and
quite a number of them switched to it. So I and many other people I was
talking would be very glad and thankful to see these 2 options. As they are
perhaps the only ones that are left to make Digsby perfect.
  • fabsantos
Hi! i would like to know how can I suggest new features for Digsby? For example, I'm not using Digsby to connect with my Facebook, since I would like to see first a filter for killing any farmville spam update.
  • Digsby
If you tell your main newsfeed to block farmville on Facebook.com then Digsby shouldn't show it either.
  • macuache
You said long time ago that you will add an option for mail icon to be shown in tray only when there is a new mail.

So where is that option. You decided to forget about it ?!
  • soclean25
i was trying to add a picture but i wasn't working, can u help me out
  • Digsby
Preferences > General & Profile to add a buddy icon.
  • DrgnMec01
I want to know if/when The Blogging Feature will come, Fallowed shortly by the Iphone/Ipod App ^^
  • Digsby
    What blogging feature?
  • DrgnMec01
    Well I've been hoping that a blogging feature would be added, so as to tie in Myspace, LiveJournal, Blogger, and the like, I have submitted a couple of Feature Suggestions, but I never heard anything back. Is something like that in the works or can it be? I think it would be the cherry on top of an enormous sundae. Ohh and I cant wait for the Ipod app, It would easily take the place of 3-5 app or so on my Ipod. I would Gladly pay up to $10 for that app... but hopefully it wont be that much ^^;

You guys have, in my opinion, one of the greatest programs for Social synchronization and I can't wait to see what comes next!!!!
Keep up the good work ^^
  • morr507
Cool! Can't wait for a Linux version. Sign me up for alpha testing too please! :)
  • Digsby
  • dakingof
Facebook comments still don't always come up when I click them. Seems to work better than last build though..
  • Digsby
Give it a second or two to pull them from the FB servers.
  • Alex
Wait wait... so now that you guys added the ability for me to be able to adjust the colors of each individual letter I type, NOW you'll actually be tackling really important stuff like group chat or releasing Digsby on other OS's?

Listen, I love your product and will recommend it to just about anyone. That being said, I've been super annoyed that I've been bitching about group chat for almost 2 years now and you guys are just now getting around to actually address it. That's way more important than being able to color each individual letter, and is a big reason as to why people don't switch to Digsby altogether!
  • Digsby
That's your opinion but we actually get a lot more requests for multiformatting than for group chat. That being said, it definitely is something we needed to already have and we're working on it now.
  • Girraj sharma & Mohit Jain
please do include rediffmail & rediffbol.
lots of users who r on these portals just like me r missing it.
  • jac
I hope future updates include being more compatible with myspace and yahoo. I get blank replys when people send emoticons from them sometimes, and itd be really great to be able to photo and video share even though Im not using yahoo, if someone else is Id like that to work on Digsby for obvious reasons.
  • Monkify
I bet a gazillion that Skype is the "top secret" update-to-come. Possibly due to copyright/royalties issues; that would be "top-secret" for legal reasons.
I LOVE digsby. I LOVE skype. I will be head over heels for a union. (All puns intended.)
  • frylock
gr8! keep it up! the smarter to/from is a killer feature and was really needed. How many times I had mistakenly IMed co-workers thinking they are my play buddies. Now, I don't hav to wry about sending msgs to wrong receivers. thanx!
  • Digsby
Seems it is a bit buggy in some cases but we'll make it solid in the next release.
  • sas
My slack is tired, tired, tired of that bird that people say it's a "pidgin"....waiting for this ninja turtle to take over! :-)
    Good job guys!!
  • Digsby
    Rock on!
  • kambing
Is there a nudge feature or something like that?

If not, i think its quite a good feature even though its similar to the one in MSN messenger.

But whatever it is, I never regretted changing from MSN to Digsby!

    (:
  • Digsby
We'll add it in the future.
  • Laescha
Just so long as it can be turned off... violently.

Thankyou, Digsby is certainly the most polished IM app I've come across already. :)
  • Skype chat would be perfect. And group video chat!
  • drake
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the Linux version and hope there's a Beta available soon. As for the 'speculation', I would guess it has something to do with VoIP or Video Conferencing.
  • dupo24
Why is it that when i type a message, digs is auto changing my font sizes and colors with no input from me? Every message is a different color or font size randomly.
  • Digsby
Not getting other reports like this - submit a bug report with screenshot.
  • dupo24
Multiformatting is working BUT when i type messages, 1st one will be black in color and font size 9. Next message changes by itself to blue and font size 10. Next message auto changes itself to blue and font size 9. Then back to black .... then to font size 10.

What the heck is going on???!!!???
  • Digsby
Not getting other reports like this - submit a bug report with screenshot.
  • Akka Busying
    I Like Digsby
  • Digsby
    We like you too :)
