Build 77 – Private Alpha Release

We just pushed an update to alpha testers (Build 77, r26907 r26910 r26921 r27035 r27050) which includes lots of bug fixes and enhancements.  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log.  Notable changes include:

  • Multiformatting: You can now change formatting options like bold, italics, underline and font on a per-character basis instead of just a per-message basis
  • Smarter To/From: If you have multiple accounts of the same protocol, the “From” dropdown in the IM window will not pre-select or fall back to accounts that don’t have that person on their buddy list
  • Status Tagging: We’ve made it easier to spread the word about Digsby by letting you add a Digsby link to the end of your status messages.  You will be asked on login if you want to enable or disable this feature and you can change it in Preferences > Status
  • Bit.ly: We’re transitioning our http://digs.by URL shortener to use bit.ly’s white label service.  Any digs.by URLs made from now on are interchangeable with bit.ly links that have the same ending

Facebook Chat via XMPP (Jabber)

Facebook recently announced that you can now access Chat via the Jabber protocol, which is much more stable than our current implementation.  We switched Digsby over to use Jabber but haven’t pushed this out yet because it only works on the standard Jabber port which is 5222.  Many offices have firewalls that block all ports besides HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443).  Every other service we support including the current Facebook implementation has the ability to work on one of those two ports.

We hear they’re currently working on adding support for 443 or 80 but a little encouragement couldn’t hurt.  If you’ll be affected by this, please take a minute to send them a suggestion using this form and say something along the lines of:

I can’t access Facebook Chat via Jabber in Digsby unless you open port 443 or 80.  My office firewall blocks port 5222 and other ports.

Become an Alpha Tester

If you would like to become an alpha tester and get new releases before everyone else, download this file and place it in the main program folder. Keep in mind that as an alpha tester you may get a release with a few bugs every now and then.  We are looking for people who are proactive in reporting these issues so we can fix them before builds go out to all users.

If you experience any issues please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.

Update 1 (3/11/2010 5:50pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a bug that caused MySpace login to fail when adding a new account.  This takes the build number to r26910.

  • Removed “Top Buddies” from jumplist as we optimize its performance
  • Max

My girlfriend is using Digsby but this noon, her client has been updated and since when she writes to me, I receive her font formating. The problem is that "10pt" appear very big on my gajim, I know this might be a bug in gajim but anyway, is there any solution to disable text formating on her side ? She doesn't want to send me huge texts like that...

(plus, sometimes, the text in blue in sent in black with no reason...)

  • When I try to login via Digsby on my MySpace account, I will get a login error. (Authentication error).
The Myspace Chat works fine though. I use the version r27052 (Alpha release). Is there already a solution to the problem?

  • Digsby

We are working on fixing this now.

  • Digsby

We are working on fixing this now.

  • Awesome... love the new stuff!

  • Hi,
I have reported a couple of releases ago a bug where one is not able to input characters obtained with AltGr + letter in the facebook status comment text box. It's a big issue for me, as I'm using the Romanian (programmers) keyboard layout that makes extensive use of the AltGr key for Romanian specific letters (like ă, â, î, ș, ț).
Since it kinda pisses me off, I reported it twice using the Bug reporter in Digsby, but I didn't get any kind of feedback. I'm writing a comment here, hoping someone will pick it up and to make sure it's somewhere visible.
I have previously reported some other bugs and Steve was very responsive. (Thus I feel inclined to believe that this bug slipped somehow).

    Thanks a lot,

  • Digsby

There's a ticket for it in a lower priority bin.

  • OK, thanks for clearing that out :)

  • Seraph

Great work! But I have a couple questions.
I just convert to Digsby from Qip and its great but I really miss qip smilies. Is a way how I can get qip smilies into Digsby? Or are you planning adding them? :-)

How it is with security of conversations, transfers etc.? I noticed that Digsby is using SSL but I can still read the conversation in Wireshark.

Next, why I must double-click the icon in the quick launch bar to open it or close it? Its a purpose or a bug? (Im running Windows 7.) Every icon in quick launch bar is usually opened in one-click but with Digsby one-click doesnt do anything.

And, will be an anti-spam filter in Digsby in the future?

  • Cody

Great work indeed! However, one critical and oft-requested feature is still missing: per contact alerts (the Alert Me When... right-click option does not allow you to customize different alerts for different contacts). Shame cause Trillian has this and Live Messenger and Pidgin have plugins that allow it.

  • whyxhello

that sounds like a great feature.. but not a top priority one. definitely have to wait to see that one.

  • Great work guys but I agree with UbuntuBoy - show us a Linux version already! You'll make so many people happy! ;-)

No, in your own time of course. I know you work your butts off! :-)

    Janey x

  • UbuntuBoy

Please quite fixing minor bugs and get moving with the linux version. That is what users want!

  • Dingu

Oh yeah? Thats what users want. What kind of users?
    Ubuntu users? Right.
You probably don't know that a new version of ubuntu is coming which has been prepared with 6 months of effort and comes with a new chat client. Must have been hard work. And yes, I forgot, it also has close buttons on the left side. Keep using the superior OS and the superior chat clients that accompany it.

  • Guest

I would like the taskbar icon to take on the full functionality of the tray icon, such as an exit digby option without having to open the buddy list or go to the system tray.

  • Guest

Would be nice if there was a way to set a default chat window size.

  • Digsby

Just resize it and close it. It will remember its size/position on screen.

  • Frsutrated

Any plans as to when you're going to fix the issue where when using an MSN account you cannot reach or IM with all of your Yahoo contacts?

  • Digsby

No exact ETA but we do plan to upgrade our MSN protocol to support Yahoo interoperability.

  • Zak Kaufman

Now that multiformatting has been implemented, I'm very much looking forward to a Linux version.

One quick question that I never really thought to ask, what distros are you guys planning on supporting?

  • UbuntuBoy

I'm assuming it would be only for the major ones: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Suse & Mandriva. This would be 85%-95% of all Linux users.

  • Dingu

I always knew linux guys are smart. Dudes, it requires python, thats it. And its pretty much self contained. I don't think they are targetting any particular distro. If you don't even know the working of the OS you use, you should switch to a better OS. Its called Windows 7.

  • Zak Kaufman

Windows 7 users don't know the workings of the OS.

  • ribosradagast

OK guys, I was bearing with the "Facebook achievements" thing until you (seemingly) just updated it to post every 500 IMs instead of every 1000. Now my friends will get bombarded by Digsby wall posts twice a day (I send epic amounts of IMs). As I saw no way to moderate when it posts, I disabled that wall spam until you guys get your minds made up about how often to post.

Oh, and thanks so much for all the hard work, I love Digsby and have been using it since the first release =)

  • Digsby

If it is too much, definitely disable it. We're trying to find the right balance so announcements don't happen too seldom or too often for the majority of users. If we find that sweet spot for the "average IM user" then it would most likely post to often for someone who "sends epic amounts of IMs" - maybe in the future we'll make it smarter so frequency depends on your average daily volume.

  • "Smarter To/From" --- Can't wait till this gets to the stable branch. That's been an issue that's bugged me for a while.

  • Jon

this isn't really about any of the recent updates. but just curious if you do ever plan to add skype in? I have a few clients that only use skype. I'd probably never use the mic/cam feature.. just being able to send text messages on skype would be amazing.

  • Digsby

We hope to in the future.

  • Antelmo

Digsby great update I also noticed improvement in MSN transfer files tranfer more fast, thanks for that, I have a complain though, You know the Now playing function, well is there anyway to make it not put "Listening to music" while the media player is off and instead put the the last status msg before you put the listening to music? you know what I mean Digsby?, Like in the WLM you select "show what im listening" and if there is no music the status msge is on and if there is music the song name is on I dont know if I explain myself, anyway i wonder if you guys can put in the next update please, thanks and keep up the great work!.

  • Digsby

Not currently - some people use unsupported players and just set the status to let others know they are listening to music.

  • Wei

I stopped using Digsby a little while ago because of crashes and hangs associated with visual studio and debugging. Was this ever resolved? I recall you guys sent out a call for crash logs recently.

  • Digsby

We get crash reports from less than 0.01% of users so if it crashes and hangs there may be an issue with your system. If it happens specifically while you are debugging in VS it may be a shared windows resource issue but that would be a problem with the OS. We've gotten just a couple reports like this and haven't been able to reproduce it here unfortunately.

  • In regard to the multi-formatting... Will this be applied to Profiles as well? As I tried bolding parts of my profile, but the entire thing gets bolded.

  • Digsby

One you get the alpha, you should be able to set a multi-formatted AIM profile.

  • Chrispenido

I'v restarted digsby six times but it has not even checked for updates.

  • Digsby

    1) Make sure the tag.yaml file is in the main Digsby program folder. 2) Submit a bug report mentioning that auto-update to alpha is not kicking in.

  • Chrispenido

i downloaded the tag.yaml but it doesnt know how to open it

  • Digsby

In that case, you should probably wait until this gets pushed out to all users once we fix the bugs.

  • easy90rider

Can't send a bug report, it's at the "Processing Diagnostic Info" window and nothing is happening, except my CPU is used 90%.
The problem I have is that I can't send Italics text in IMs.

  • easy90rider

I had to revert to build 26376. I can't send a bug report in the 26921 build.

  • Digsby

Email us at bugs@digsby.com with more details.

  • Martin

Is it very hard to implement a function to save logfiles to a custom location ?

  • Digsby

Nope - we just don't want to clutter the preferences with too many options. We'll add an advanced preferences section at some point in the future and this option will be there.

  • Adam

Please get to work the linux and mac versions!!!

  • Digsby

    We already are :)

  • in one fell swoop, you have fixed every complaint I have about digsby
    effin fuckin a

  • Digsby

Sweet. You should think of more complaints. Our work is never done :)

  • Sachin

Guys, please buddy pounce= individual alert notifications. Its the 5th request in terms of rating at digsbies.org, as of writing.

  • Digsby

We will at some point in the future.

  • groundy1102

"Autorespond with status message" doesn't work anymore, I've tried it with YM, Google Talk, Jabber (maybe other IMs won't work, either). Is it because of "Promote Digsby in my IM status message" feature addition?

  • Digsby

It could be - we're looking into this now. Thanks for reporting the bug.

  • Digdug

You could have the via 'Digsby' be the front end to a url. So it still reads via Disby. - Where if you click on 'Digsby' it takes you to the page.

  • Digsby

Unfortunately not. That would have been ideal.

  • gpzbc

I selected "yes" when presented with the opportunity to spread the word about Digsby in my IM Status. I'm ok with this type of thing... especially since it helps keep Digsby free. But I was disappointed when I saw the implementation of it. It has a url and is longer than the Buddy Window is wide.

I think it would be a better implementation if my IM Status listed my status, then "via Digsby" with a little Digsby icon. That will get people's attention more than a url that runs off the page and out of view.
    Just my two cents worth.
    Keep up the good work!

  • Digsby

We can't really add an icon to the status - others won't see it. Also, just using "via Digsby" without a link won't actually drive any traffic to Digsby since few people will take the initiative to Google it and find out what it is.

  • gpzbc

hmmm... based on that information, I can see the dilemma and why you chose to do it the way that you did. I'll let you know if I come up with any better ideas.

  • blkblt4life

i downloaded the file to be an alpha tester, but i did not receive the update. i am still on build 26376.
i put the file in C:/programfiles(x86)/Digsby/

  • Digsby

It may take a few restarts.

  • Multi-formatting is something Digsby has needed since day one. Glad to see it's finally available.

  • Digsby

Agreed! And group chat too - working on that one now.

  • homez99

I just had the update applied, but now my facebook and twitter news feeds are blank and not updating. Does anyone know what the problem is?

  • Digsby

If it doesn't resolve itself use Help > Send Bug Report to submit a diagnostic log. Please include a screenshot as well.

  • Re: Smarter To/From

Will that be the case with Twitter, too?

  • Digsby

This only applies to the IM window currently.

  • Chris Niles

I'm unable to chat using facebook after this update.
after opening a new chat with a contact, and after attempting to send a message, immediately I receive "Some of the messages you sent may not have been received."

  • Chris

This is likely due to a bug which will be fixed in a forthcoming update - build r26913 or higher.

  • John

I get the same problem. I see their text, they don't see mine.

  • Digsby

    Fixing this now.

  • KyFree

Multiformatting is not appearing as such on the receiving end (gchat). Do both sides need to be running Digsby?

  • Digsby

If the other person is using Gmail, it doesn't support formatting at all. Digsby or other Jabber clients will show it though.

  • So, the transition to bit.ly....will you be able to set up an account? Like, with the username and API key as in other programs like Seesmic and Tweetdeck? Or...does the service just remain anonymous?

  • Digsby

That's the goal but we're transitioning in multiple phases to keep old digs.by links from breaking

  • bachsmonopoly

MULTIFORMATTING! Bless the Digsby Gods :)

  • I've missed what you've tried to say - is the current facebook chat implementation in digsby (as of this alpha build) is a jabber based one - or the old one? if it's the former case, can we be allowed to choose between the two for the time being?

  • Digsby

It is the old one but we'll replace it as soon as Jabber can function on more than one port.

  • Jon

facebook chat is so unstable. I can't wait til you can add the jabber protocol for it.

  • M-UK

Why dont people use their head? ... I dont think you have set the bar high enough for allowing alpha testers!

It shouldn't take a genius to google facebook chat jabber.
You just add a jabber account to Digsby and you have your two implementations available.

I have been using facebook chat via jabber and the normal way since the day they lanched it.

  • Why not to make the two implementations available temporarily?

  • Digsby

More headache than it's worth. We hope to switch to Jabber within a couple weeks.

  • mcsinner

am i understanding it right that the facebook chat is now via jabber? or is this future development?

  • Digsby

It is the old one but we'll replace it as soon as Jabber can function on more than one port.

  • After update had a debug error pop up, was able to reproduce it 3 consecutive times and then on the fourth restart, digsby reverted itself back to r26376.

  • Digsby

We caught the debug error and reverted to make a new build. Restarting in about 5 minutes will get you a new alpha build without the bug.

  • Excellent :) Love the new features, great work guys!

  • Glad to see multi-formatting thx guys & gals :)
