Build 76 – Fighting the Winter Blues!

We’re excited to introduce the first new release of 2010 and this one is jam packed with lots of goodness!  We just pushed an update to all users (Build 76, r26321 r26376) which includes a large number of features, bug fixes and enhancements.  As always, you can read the entire list of enhancements on our Change Log. Notable changes include:

  • New Skins: The “Windows 7″ skin now has 8 new variants by @derekerdmann.  Access them via Preferences > Skins.
  • Windows 7 Support: Digsby takes advantage of jump lists for easy access to common tasks and top buddies (by log size).  We also use taskbar grouping to let you jump to conversations, see typing notifications and unread conversation counts.
  • Better Popups: Social networks will no longer show a separate popup for Alerts and the titles will no longer say “Facebook Newsfeed” with a generic Facebook icon.  Instead, you will see the friend’s picture and name with a small badge in the top right for each network. You can also comment/like Facebook items right from popups.
  • Trending News: We’ve partnered with the folks at OneRiot to bring the latest trending news stories to your social feeds.  You can enable/disable via Preferences > General & Profile.
  • Facebook Dislike: We’re amazed by how many people wanted to “Dislike” Facebook posts.  The Dislike Button Facebook page has over 3.2 million fans!  You asked for it, you got it.
  • MySpace Newsfeed: We’ve revamped the MySpace newsfeed to support their new APIs so it looks a lot more like the Facebook/Twitter feeds including the ability to comment on statuses.
  • MySpace Achievements: Back in September we introduced achievements for Facebook and the functionality is being ported over to MySpace.  You will be asked if you would like to enable or disable this functionality and you can turn it on/off by editing your MySpace account in Preferences.
  • Yahoo HTTP Support: Restrictive firewalls and proxies should no longer be an issue for Yahoo Messenger users.  Edit the account in preferences and set it to “Always use HTTP”

Up next is per-character formatting (so you can finally bold parts of an IM), group chat (long overdue), a greater focus on finishing up mac/linux releases (no ETA yet),  and a few other fun things we have up our sleeve for you.  Let us know what you think of this release in the comments.

If you run into any bugs please use “Help > Send Bug Report” in the main menu to submit a diagnostic log or email us at bugs@digsby.com.  We’ll keep pushing to make Digsby even better and greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word!

Update 1 (2/15/2010 5:30pm EST): We just pushed out a small patch fixing a few bugs in this release.  One of them caused auto-update to not work for some users and another caused Digsby to hit rate limits with the bit.ly service because of excessive URL shortening for trending news stories.  The new release number is 26376.  Enjoy!

  • Maelyn
A little behind on commenting here on this, but I absolutely /hate/ that "Trending News: We’ve partnered with the folks at OneRiot to bring the latest trending news stories to your social feeds. You can enable/disable via Preferences > General & Profile." is opt-out. I scrambled all over Digsby's preferences, Twitter's help site, and even a Google search before I had to come and search through Digsby release logs to find out why /unwanted/ trash from MTV, ESPN, and etc. was showing up in my timeline in Digsby.

Never-ever-ever make stuff that is enabled by default and opt-out. That's just highly suspicious behaviour. Now I have to wonder what else is turned on that wasn't originally in there and that I absolutely don't want on.
  • Digsby
There is nothing suspicious about making a feature which includes sponsored links that generate revenue to support Digsby development on by default. However, we've gotten some emails and bug reports from folks asking what they were because they didn't read the blog so the next release adds a question mark link into each story which brings up a dialog explaining what they are and how to turn them off.
  • egsigma
What would be really really nice is a skin that completely utilizes Windows Aero on Vista and 7 (or at least 7). Like, completely. Like, the whole buddy list window and the whole chatbox window (and might as well do the preferences and history windows). Or at least the backgrounds of these windows. That would look really nice and it would blend with the rest of the Windows UI. More applications should utilize the Aero interface--its pretty attractive.
  • I also would be happy to see a Linux version appear. Mac OS X would be nice, too, but as Linux is my own preferred OS, I'ma have to add my +1 to that request above all other requests I might have. An Ubuntu/Debian .deb package release would likely grab you the largest chunk of Linux users right off the bat, and should be fairly simple to convert to the other major package format (.rpm).
  • Hi,
i am great full to digsby.i want digsby for mobile version.
    Thanks
  • godot
How much longer is it going to take until we can customize the icons for contacts?
  • bytemybits
Hey Digs, since you've gotten a few comments about the 'spam' in the feeds I thought I'd let you know I like it. I'd even say I'd like a volume control so when my lame friends aren't entertaining me enough I can start seeing more trending posts. Nice feature, I hope it didn't distract you from the group chat though, grrr ;)
  • tired of using digsby for months now... i started to hate the inability to send files and sometimes to receive... going to try pidgin or whatever i can find...if i can send files with whatever i find me and my buddies are switching.
  • Digsby
Just submit a bug report using the Help menu after one fails so we can take a look at what's going wrong.
  • Hey, just wanted to suggest that for twitter you add an option to have a pop-up when you're mentioned? In the new twitter window you can set searches and groups to pop-up but not the mentions, and in the notifications in preferences you can choose either direct message or everything!
Keep up the amazing work :)
  • Wa
    Man screw Windows 7 support I want Linux support. ;___;
    Also plugin support..python preferably.
  • When? When? Well, when the same?
In this excellent IM client will:
    a) A good view message history and search the entire history.
    b) Support for x-status and additional features in the protocol ICQ.
  • Bartholemew
WHERE THE F*** IS THE MAC CLIENT? IT'S BEEN COMING SOON FOR A DECADE.
  • Really? Digsby's only been around for like 2 ish years... Still got 8 more to go for a Decade =P
  • carballo
    Thanks!
  • Jonathan
    Goodbye.

Digsby is nice for connecting to different networks and keeping up on social networking. I recognize Digsby is in the business of making money, but I was still surprised when I started to see spam in my facebook and twitter feeds when viewed through digsby.

We've all been waiting for multi-user chat for so long (years?), and have always been told it's a top priority. I'm not taking heart on the basis you saying it yet again.

But now that I'm getting spam interjected into my feeds, it's just wasting my time.

I haven't found another app yet to replace digsby, but I can't keep promoting the program. I'm checking out VoxOx, but it's having issues running on my XP machine (have yet to try my Vista or Win7 machines), and maybe back to the stability, multi-user chat, and spam-free pidgin.
  • Digsby
You know it's a feature you can turn off right? It's just the trending news topics of the day.
  • Jonathan
I didn't. Thanks for the tips.
  • Eddy
Great! But I'm still wating for the possibility to add my Hyves(IM)account, that would really(!) make Digsby usefull to me (and millions of others)! Is that ever going to happen?
  • Adewale
    its nice thou
  • armana
sip lah. Kita dukung terusss.. selama masih gratis. :D . thanks
  • armana
New Digsby is cool. I love it. Muantap tap tap .... :D | Thanks a lot . armana
  • Absolutely cannot wait for mac support. :)
  • DesktopMan
Any plans to fix file transfer? This keeps me from uninstalling other clients.
  • Digsby
It should be working fine. Submit a bug report after one fails to let us know what is going wrong and how often.
  • The names Mc'O'BriarDonaldson
I still can't connec to Yahoo IM with a restrictive proxy. I've tried both port 5050 and Always use HTTP. I've turned off my firewall to eliminate any issues that may cause.
  • Digsby
If your firewall/proxy blocks non-HTTP traffic then this would work. If it actually blocks all Yahoo servers specifically then there is not much we can do.
  • More conversation themes from Digsbies, like Renkoo for example. I know it would be a whole lot better built in the app, instead of downloading the theme on all my computers.
  • Oh, thx for nice update! Love it!
  • I've got to say that I'm pretty disappointed in the Dislike feature implementation, the commenting is alright, but I don't want to use a feature that just spams links to whatever software I'm using at my friends every time I go to use it. I like Digsby quite a bit, I give cpu time to the research project, I encourage friends to use Digsby for their im needs plenty on my own, as an already evangelical user I don't appreciate that level of intrusiveness nor do I feel like it is appropriate.
  • franktothemax
can't help but notice that myspace also has a instant messaging system an awful lot like facebook.. however when my myspace buddies are signed on, I can't shoot them a message on digsby the same way I would for facebook. example: facebook friend online show up on my buddy list. myspace buddies online do not show up on my buddy list. I don't know if it's even possible for myspace to work the same way, but I figured i'd at least say something. I know I can't be the only one thinking this.
  • Digsby
Just add your MySpaceIM account to Digsby and you can chat with all your friends.
  • mrl
    good
  • seriously cannot wait for the Linux version. i'll make the switch from pidgin the minute it comes out, provided it's not years from now :p

    Good work lads.
  • pravnj
great work guys. just love digsby. wondering when we will be seeing google buzz support?
  • can you tell me why i have "featured" tweets from people I'm not following? i'm pretty ticked off about this - if i wanted to follow huffington post or espn, i would.
  • nicoleloveseaster
    GREAT!!
  • Bosas
    Go Digsby, you rock!!!!!1
  • MastaBlasta
Digsby Please Fix The MSN downloading and uploading! When I receive a file from a friend it like start to download it good then it falls to 0 then it starts to download again and again over and over...please fix that and also ADD A NUDGE BUTTON :) other then that KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! • eliavictor
    Hello Mr. Digsby,
Do you plan on having a Android app any time soon, I am dying to one from you :)
  • Bo
+1 for finishing a Linux release

Before I get my hopes up, I want to clarify something:

When you say group chat is coming, does this also mean I can send IM's to multiple people at the same time? There's a feature in Trillian (Pro) that would let you effectively "broadcast" a message to multiple people (like a group). This feature is very handy in office situations to quickly give a group of people an update and it's been the only real drawback I've had since I've started using Digsby. Is this also being implemented?
  • Nekaruk
Is there any way we can edit our myspace activity stream on digsby so that it only shows the friends (in myspace) we've subscribed to? I prefer the way it used to be. I don't like having the stream so cluttered w/ updates I really don't want from people except those I prefer. (and yea, I've deleted a good portion of friends to compromise w/ this update, but their status updates remain too)
  • bikerabhiav
I love Digsby... thank you for the updates, I recommend digsby wherever possible.
  • kennywinkleman
why in the world would you want to help a commercialized site like twitter anyway, what a pointless site that is, its awful, filled with arrogant dickhead scumbags and look-at-me news commentators who seem to think we give a damn about their lives and their jibber jabber nonsense..

haven't we all had just about enough of this corporate twitter shit jammed down our throats? are we blind here or what?

    -kenny
  • Brandito
i love using twitter for gathering up to the minute news. everyone i follow provides news posts, no jibber jabber from any of them :)

you sir might be using twitter incorrectly, just a though!
  • kennywinkleman
one more forced update and this shit software no longer remains on my pc.
  • Digsby
They updates are automatic because otherwise we would get thousands of bug reports saying "my XXXX won't log in" when a protocol changes and we push an update fixing it. Whenever you visit a website you see the latest version of that site. It's not frozen in time with no innovation.... Digsby will keep getting better.
  • Brandito
wow, someone doesn't understand the vast benefits of automatic updates :\

keep the automatic updates coming, LOVE THEM!
  • I don't think the problem is with Automatic Updates per se, but automatic updates that automatically opt you in for spam. It's why I'm in the process of uninstalling digsby right now.
  • richie
Hello - I just want to request an option to disable the Jumplist Aero Peek Tab preview. I do need 2 clicks to open the Chat Windows - I needed one with the old version. It's pretty ugly, too - because of these low quality pictures of most messengers :(
Maybe a preview of the chat lines would be better here? Or a "smaller" preview - but I guess you can't do that because it's dictated by Windows.

Would it be possible to open the tab preview while holding your mouse for ~500ms over Digsbys taskbar icon and directly open the chat windows when clicking only on it? If not - a feature to disable this preview at all would just be fine!

could I have a comment on that this time please?
  • Joshua
is the endless flashing out of focus windows and blinking on the taskbar ever going to be fixed? its about the most annoying thing about digsby, other than that its the best thing ever.
  • Drew
you have been talking about adding group chat for years. in my eyes it's really your only flaw. let's hope that this time when you say you're working on it for the next release, you really are.

a mobile app would be nice too =)
  • I can believe you opted in all your users to trending news. I don't want spam in my feed. If I wanted "Trending News" then I would follow someone who tweets about it. You need to explain to your users about new features and let them opt in our out. Please see my blog post for more info: http://www.waynezim.com/2010/0...
  • rollz0r
Mouse cursor flickers while typing in an MSN conversation(and probably elsewhere). Fix this please!

  • OMG!!! What about Buzz? Days have passed! Buzz has like 12 users, too.
  • Vitaly
Please improve the way history is displayed in history:

    1) Merge history for merged contacts
    2) Improve the UI of history window
  • OMG!!! What about Linux? Months have passed!
  • Hakimy
when will digsby support msn protocol? I still can't chat with friends there while being invisible and I can't see their display pictures unlike yahoo.
  • JC
Please, support Linux. Digsby rocks but I can't run it on my Ubuntu setup and there is nothing that comes close to comparing.
  • Orlando
Good job!! Thanks for all of your hard work.
  • Great work. The first two things I'd like to see are:
    1. A new log format, preferably XML, 1 file per contact.
    2. A new, compact conversation theme that doesn't require so much screen space.
  • Blizz
    Love it!
  • Rudis
what are these "featured" news stories showing up in my facebook feed now? is it facebook injecting these, or digsby?
  • They are current relavent news items. Read #4 on this blog post for more information including instructions on how to disable them if you don't want them.
  • Diana
How can I disable the fake tweets you decided to start injecting into my feed with no distinguishing characteristics to tell me that it's spam?
  • They aren't spam messages, they are current relavent news items. Read #4 on this blog post, it includes instructions to disable them if you don't want them.
  • john
I would still really like to see the ability to do broadcast messages to a group of people. It is annoying to have to copy paste to send the same message to half a dozen people.
  • jmvance
Loving the Facebook Dislike! Now maybe they'll add it to the app....
  • No OSX support yet :(
  • Princess
Yay! My friends will be so jealous that I can dislike things!
  • L.G.
You guys rock. Keep up the excellent work. I can't wait for the Group Chat functionality :)
  • Joe
wow thanks guyes your doing a realy good job :) ..but i iam still havig problems wih icq filetransfere ..can you have a look at that ;) ?
  • The best way for us to handle these problems if by recreating the problem and submitting a bug report, it will send us a diagnostic log that will help us fix this issue.
  • You guys are pretty awesome, Digsby is by far the best IM/Social Client around. You need a mac and linux version asap! lol, I keep telling people about you, but many of them can't get it because of that. Everyone on windows switches over cuz it's freaking rocks :)
  • We're working hard to make sure everyone has a chance to try Digsby no matter what Operating System they are using. :)
  • Tom
When are you going to launch an iPhone app?
  • Google Buzz implementation would be awesome :D

Also, from where can I "advertise" the digsby achievements? I said no the first time it showed up because I thought that I'll have some other way to call on that feature. But I can't seem to find it.
  • As of right now the achievements work through the respected Facebook and MySpace social applications. Certain thresholds are set to unlock the necessary achievements, these then get posted automatically if the feature is enabled. You can always disable them from the account dialog.

Digsby de lo mejor me gusta por su interfas con todos me correos y redes sociales.
  • Muchas gracias. Me alegro de que te gusta Digsby tanto como nosotros.

Greetings! First of all: GREAT! I like your application very much! So far I'm happy with it and I know you're working to make it better so keep it up guys!

I have a question/suggestion, too. When using Windows 7 Aero pick works well from taskbar (although DP's are displayed instead of the chat windows but that was reported), however, I docked Digsby to the start menu and tried to use the jump list from there, but it doesn't work. It would be good to have Aero pick's jump list in both taskbar and start menu.

    Thanks =D
  • Any chance of integrating facebook pokes better? I know they're pretty trivial but that's exactly why I don't want to have to wait for my browser to start and the facebook homepage to load just to poke back... Otherwise great work guys! Bring on the Linux version...
  • Filippok
And what about ctrl+enter hotkey to send messages?
  • kansagous
I want a new software from you guys digsby for mobile. Can do that.
  • mahmoudsoliman
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
  • please implement buzz and skype
  • representinglive
please, lots and lots of us are really waiting for the linux version......we've been waiting for years now.....please
  • Also, to add on.
If I hide a group from seeing me online on facebook.
It hides them in digsby too.
    Also needs a fix.
  • Having a problem where I choose to make my self offline on Facebook chat on the web, but online on Digsby (So I dont get duplicates, on the site and on digsby...doing this because FB chat is FAIL...
Anyways, before the update I was doing this and everything was fine.
Now, I digsby won't connect to Facebook CHAT connects to feeds just fine.
And when I close my Facebook window. and press connect in digsby, it works perfectly fine.
Might want to look into this.
    Thanks!
  • We'll be fully supporting Facebook's new XMPP interface for chat soon, which should eliminate problems like this.
  • Why did you guys change the behavior of the Jumplist on Windows 7 from what it was in the first alpha? The availability indicator & the online buddies feature was way better than what the jumplist is at present! Why would we want access to the offline buddies just because their log size is the largest?
  • Unfortunately once a buddy is PINNED in the jump list we can no longer update the icon for it. Because of this we had to remove the status icon, mainly to prevent confusion, as pinning an online buddy would make them always appear as online even if they are offline. This is a limitation in Windows 7's jumplist feature.
  • Removing them from the pinned friends is fine then, but why the
unpinned ones? In the first alpha, the jumplist displayed the friends
who were online. Why have you removed that section completely!
  • vitorgatti
Nice update! And good to know that Mac/Linux support is really coming to us! :D

When you release a version for Ubuntu, probably it will be the default messenger! At least for me :P

Now I have a suggestion if you wanna, maybe, make easy money... how about a paid service to host the user chat logs? So all preferences AND logs would be in your server! :)
  • dan
I think digsby is one of the best (and the most stable) multi-social client out now, but something that is a step lower than all its good features is the graphical interface. Keep it SIMPLE as it is now, but make it cooler: it would be perfect!!
  • Rares
    Hi there,

Maybe you guys get the time to tweak a few existing features:
    1. Still no way to send multi-line messages. CTRL-ENTER should add a new line to the current message instead of sending it.

    2. It is important that contacts can be organized in groups and sub-groups. I have a couple hundred contacts and I would like to organize them by domain and by company. Curently only one level of groups can be defined.

    3. When Digsby tries to send the message from an account which is disconnected it will try to send it from another connected account. This is not good, because generally accounts are kept separate and private. At least please provide an option to disable it, or display a message box when the message cannot be sent.

    4. Select multiple contacts at once for drag and dropping into another group. Alternatively, provide right click and Move To Group. I have 5 online accounts and I am trying to make order in groups, but I need to drag and drop user by user, each time scrolling to the destination.

    Thanks!
  • 1. Shift+Enter adds a new line to the current message.

    2. We support complex sorting, but it is still only 1 level, try playing with some of the advanced sorting methods, you may find one that works for you.

    3. We are aware of this issue and have a ticket already in place to fix this in the near future.

    4. We may add this in the future at some point.
