It's such a basic part of every other client I've ever used (AIM, Trillian, Pidgin, and on and on and on) that I STILL find myself expecting CTRL-I to italicize what I'm about to type, instead of THE WHOLE FREAKING TEXTBOX. Like several others here, I canNOT fathom why formatting for individual words isn’t implemented.
