Constant Progress – Thanks for the Feedback

We just pushed an update that fixes the most critical issues reported thus far. As always, you can read the entire list of new features, bug fixes, and enhancements on our Change Log. Most notably:

  • Fixed the “Connection Lost” bug when connecting to digsby
  • Fixed IMs not sending sometimes on MSN Messenger
  • Unicode support in auto-update system for those with international versions of Windows or with Windows usernames that have unicode.

Our biggest priorities for the next release are:

  • Performance optimization, remaining connectivity issues, and most requested usability optimizations
  • Fixing the Facebook “Connecting…” bug – we added more log statements that will help us fix this. If you experience this please submit a diagnostic log using “Help” > “Send Bug Report”
  • @Niels

This is not officially supported yet but some users are discussing it on the forums: http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=114
  • Niels
How can I install Digsby on U3 system and carry it with me ?
  • Second the LinkedIn functionality.
  • Shawn
Another note. I use a U3 version of Digsby, and am very pleased with the ability to carry it to multiple computers without having to install it.
  • Shawn
I think this is a spiffy application. I particularly like the popup new messages. It's nice not to have to keep the conversation window on top of my other programs. On the topic of possible new features and preferences, I would like to be able to stop the entries in the conversation window when my contact changes status. The ability to use an off-the-record security plugin of some sort would be nice as well.

    Thanks again for being awesome.
  • @Romy - we are working on a fix right now

@Shantesh - can you use the "Help" > "Submit Bug Report" to send a diagnostic log after the error happens
  • Getting the connection failed error for gtalk on vista but not XP
  • Romy
Idk what to do!! I still have the Failed To Connect error
  • @meg - use the "Help" > "Submit Bug Report" option to send us a diagnostic log. We are working on this issue right now.
  • meg
i have some problem with msn
    i still cannot send messagges
but i can see my email

with gtalk everything (im and mail) is ok
  • @Warboy - doing a code review and pushing an update (along with that fix) shortly!
  • Warboy
PS. I think its because of me having a Large number of people on my yahoo account.
  • Warboy
Connection problems are still happening when trying to connect to my Yahoo Account. It says "Loading Contact List" and then doesn't load it, and gives me a the Diagnoses tool and when i try to send a report to you guys, It says it failed to upload. But Everything else works great, but I would love to see more skin customization.
  • Justin
Hi, thanks for acknowledging my feedback, I really appreciate it. Good to know that we will eventually have the options for new ims to appear in the trey rather than on the task bar. With that being said, however, I think it would also be a good idea (while we're waiting for that enhancement) for the caption of the window that opens in the taskbar to be the GROUP under which the person IMing you belongs to, rather than their alias or sn. This is also done in similar programs such as yours.

For example, instead of "ashley" blinking in the taskbar minimized, I would see "AIM" blinking. Very nondescript.
  • @Steven - we need to make the connection happen faster and let you know that it is connecting to the other person. MSN's protocol has a strange way of handling messaging since each IM conversation is a new connection. We will also add "failed" messages in the near future.

@v9y - we have added a lot of unicode support over the past week. If you are still having unicode issues please email us at bugs@digsby.com
  • Steven
A feature request, in our email we can view via the client, if links are present within our new mail, could those links be brought up and displayed at the bottom of each new email we see (above mark as read, open etc) and made clickable? (perhaps an option to make links within email clickable is safer)

This would make checking mail even better for myself.
  • v9y
I hope the Unicode support is on the cards. A *lot* of messaging is happening in UTF-8 and not supporting it would keep a wide section of users off it. Which will be a shame, considering what a great tool it is.
  • Steven
Every now and then, starting a conversation there still seems to be a slight delay after sending and it showing up in the conversation window, doesn't happen all the time just every now and then, bug?

Also, if a message fails to send to a contact, because of an IM Networks error, will we get a notice of some sort? Windows Live Messenger usually gives you the 'Message failed to be delivered etc'
  • but DB is for database =/
  • Daniel
If I missed this feature, or anyone asking for it I apologize; any chance of spellcheck? One of my favorite features of Pidgin is the spellcheck feature, so I can make sure I not referring to "teh clietn" in my IM conversation.
  • Ray
Thanks Steve, Done and Done. (bug submits) Looking forward to see what DB has in store for the future. Any hints to more add ons.. twitter? Skype?
  • @Ray

IMAP - use the "Help" > "Submit Bug Report" option to send a diagnostic log after making sure the port is correct. We had a bug where the port didn't stick but now it does

POP - there is no such thing as read/unread in POP... just messages. Your outlook remembers that you read them but unless you remove them from the server any new location will always see them as unread

Yahoo - looking into the dropped connection issue. After it happens a few times can you submit a diagnostic log so we can see why it is dying

Digsby - I love how you went from Digsby to DBe to DB.... leading us into the new acronym for digsby!
  • Ray
We use Novell's groupwise at my work and we do have both imap and pop3 access to the account. However i can't seem to get the IMAP to connect but the pop works fine. Now... here's the real kicker: Digsby is reading my entire mailbox as having not been read, and not giving me the mail in order from newest to oldest, so I am seeing only old stored emails, that i want to keep, but digsby is reading them as having not been open. I delete them from DBe and they disappear from the list temorarily but never from the main account then after checking again they reappear. So in short, Digsby is not correctly reading my IMAP at all and not readying my POP account correctly giving me already opened old emails as new and not showing the entirety of the mailbox, including my newest mailings. We do use a different port number for the inbound pop & Imap, but the standard port for smtp.

The second issues is that I get drops in my connection to yahoo about every 15minutes. Thankfully DBe does auto reconnect and I am fine, but that would get annoying in the middle of a conversation.

On other terms, I love the fact that I can control my accounts straight from DB, and that I can have them right there in front of me!
  • Alan
    Thanks Steve
  • @Dan + Eia - links work if there is http:// in front of them. We will be smarter about knowing what is a link and what isn't very shortly.... bugs are taking priority right now
  • eia
    @Dan,

I'm getting links I can click here, opens in Firefox and everything :) I'm only using digsby for MSN right now, maybe that has something to do with it? (Shouldn't think so, though)
  • eia
Oh, and bug report is of course submitted, hope it helps.
  • Dan
    Feature suggestion:

Many people use url's in status messages on Yahoo. It would be great if you could click on the status/url like a live link (the way it happens in Yahoo Messenger). Right now I have to copy/paste the text into a browser window. It's just a minor annoyance, but hey, it's worth considering.

(or is this implemented and I just missed some checkbox somewhere...?)
  • eia
    I still have this problem:
"Fixed IMs not sending sometimes on MSN Messenger". Sometimes when I hit enter, the text I just wrote disappears and nothing happens.

Contact me by email if I can help solve this somehow!
  • Wes Edwards
    Thanks Steve. Excellent news!
  • Jornsby
I agree with Victor, Steve thanks for all your help.
  • @Alan - we will make this happen automatically... there is a ticket to do this

@Wes - coincidentally, working on this right now :)
  • Wes Edwards
I'm running the aim protocol only and loving it. In the message text window I am unable to delete words using ctrl+backspace. Though this is a very minor problem I was just hoping that it could be addressed. Great work so far. Keep it up.
  • Steven
When adding more social networks, do not forget Pownce!
  • Alan
Thanks for fixing the yahoo.com bug but how do i change the default setting to yahoo.co.uk?

Also i'm still having trouble logging onto MSN because my account is not authenticated. is this a problem at my end?

Apart from that when Digsby is fully working its going to be an awesome piece of software
  • You're doing a great support work, congratulations :)
  • Greg
Great client so far, I've been testing Trillian's Astra as well and I like your's better even though it has a smaller IM feature set.

    Couple Suggestions/Issues
    - Memory usage is huge for an IM client (running 60MB+ in XP and Vista)
    - A hotkey to sign in/out of Digsby
    - LinkedIn integration (minor, would be nice feature)

I often work on a VPN and the IM servers get confused when I logon or off which changes my IP. This feature allows me to logoff my IMs before killing the VPN and vice versa. I've set it up with Trillian and it works well.

Great product, keep up the good work.
  • @Jornsby - most likely a firewall issue at your end but we have another trick up our sleeve to fix that in the next release. However, check your settings.

@Steven - glad the fixes worked!

@Ben - you can make it always be the status icon in the "Conversations" tab of preferences
  • Zombiefly
thanks for the update, i'm seeing less "... has left the conversation". my paranoia is now back to normal :)

    keep the goodness coming :D
  • Ben
Feature suggestion: (if you would rather me email this in the future let me know, apologies)

    - change the conversation window icon for a buddy who logs off from being their buddy icon to the global "offline" icon (black ball)

does that make sense? i hate to keep drawing parallels with Pidgin, but that was another feature i miss.

btw, still no email from you Steve
  • Steven
I'd like to see a 'Mark All Read' option added when hovering to check E-Mail, perhaps top right corner of that window/popout.. whatever it is.

Tabbed Chat seems to be fixed for myself, I'm not using an @hotmail, live, or msn signon here. I'm able to chat with folks on MSN/gtalk.
  • Bill
Uninstalled, Re-Installed most recent version on website. Still receiving “We are upgrading Digsby. Please try connecting again in a few minutes.” -

Also, when uninstalled and reinstalled username/password data is restored in new installation (it was obviously not removed when digsby is uninstalled)
  • Jornsby
Steve, If I've never been able to connect and have always gotten the "Connection Lost" error, even after multiple install/uninstalls, does that mean the problem probably lies on my end and my work's network?
  • If you still have msn sending bugs send us your logs "Help" > "Submit Bug Report" (if you read this more than 6 hours from now there is no need... we will have enough at that point)
  • kim
MSN message sending bug still in effect here too.
  • I got another bug, when I open a new IM conversation (with an msn contact) and type a message it got sent but wont appear in my window when I type a second message this one appears, when my contact replies its message got shown and then I type again and the same, first message wont appear but the second and followings yes
  • @Dan - can you submit a diagnostic log for each of those using "Help" > "Submit Bug Report" - make sure you restart digsby in between to clear the log. That will make it easier to isolate the issue.
  • Dan
Hmm... I just restarted Digsby and it installed the latest update. Now it's weird - When I try to log into my Yahoo! Messenger account it connects, authenticates, the people online in my list appear for a brief second and then I get disconnected.

Also, there's a strange problem I noticed before this update - If I receive a file over Yahoo and I cancel the transfer, I get disconnected.
  • @Daniel - we have another thing we want to try to get you past your firewall. We will push another update with the fix shortly.
  • Daniel
After the autoupdate, Digsby gives me a Connection Lost error on login. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling and autoupdating again. No change.

I was able to login once before the autoupdate.
  • Ok I'll check it, thanks ;)
  • @Victor & Jack - it is because our auto update system didn't handle unicode properly but that is fixed. Reinstall and it will never happen again. If you run into it again after that email us at bugs@digsby.com
  • Same problem as Jack... btw, love the app and the logo =)
  • Bill
    No Sir.

    Should I download and reinstall?
  • @Bill - log in again... any luck?
  • Hey guys!
It's my first day (12/02) with this excellent application, but hey, i receive an update and since that i couldn't connect me anymore.
An "Update succesfull" message appear me but then it's tell me all the time "Digsby it's need restart". I already restart it 5 times and nothing happen.
I hope that this will be a help more than a problem.
Bye, greetings from Uruguay (search it in the map, it's ****in' small).

    (update: removed bad word)
  • Jan
nice update guys, the im's not being sent sometimes really gave me headaches...

one other thing i miss is the ability to group all offline contacts together and have the online ones sorted by name. (now someone starting with A but on idle will be all the way down the contact list)
  • Hi, Digsby doesn't start, it says: "Update Successful" and then "Digsby needs to restart..." over and over again =/
  • Eric
    Steve-

I tried digsby on another computer and MSN is working fine. The only difference is the network I am using and OS.

When MSN does NOT work properly: Vista and home network (Buffalo router. Windows firewall.)

When MSN works fine: XP and my university network (Windows firewall as well).

    Hope this helps.
  • Bill
Am I getting closer or further from being able to connect again:) Error: "We are upgrading Digsby. Please try connecting again in a few minutes."
  • @Marc - working on the "Loading Skin" issue right now
  • @all with firewall issue - Digsby runs on two ports: 5555 and 5222. If those are blocked we also try 443 and 80 however the traffic over 80 does not look like HTTP so some firewalls still block it. We will make digsby traffic look like HTTP shortly so you can log in.
  • Marc
I'm getting the Loading Skin message and it just sits there. I did an uninstall/reinstall twice - once with a reboot in between.
  • mystp
Thanks for a great app - looks extremely promising!

Any word on how things are progressing with the Hotmail Server Error that some of us are experiencing?
  • Joseph Amato
First off, amazing client. Blows everything else out of the water.

One thing I noticed though. I sometimes set my profile to invisible when I am waiting for someone to come on but don't want to be bothered by my other friends. I noticed that if you start out with invisible turned on, it won't show who is on in MSN or Google Talk. At least, for me. Once I switch it to normal, they all suddenly come on at once. If you could fix this, it would be great. Otherwise, awesome job.
  • nan
I'm behind a firewall, and i'm able to connect to gtalk thru it, but i can't connect to digsby.

    Any workarounds?
  • Tony
I was having some trouble getting the updates for the connection lost bug, but i cleared out: C:\Documents and Settings\[my user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Digsby , and now everything seems to work fine. reinstall did not fix.
  • amanda
wow! what a GREAT app! everything (knock on wood) has been working perfectly for me, after a few initial set-up problems.

is there any customization or skins for the notification windows? maybe themes to match with the IM themes?

but overall....great stuff, thanks so much!! i'm telling all my friends to get pumped for the general release!
  • Mike
I have the same issue as Nick, however every other IM client works perfectly fine (Pidgin, AIM, etc) when I set the proxy up. I don't see why digsby is any different.
  • Richa
=) you guys are great at updating and fixing things . Umm... i got a msg saying that theres updates and I should close digsby and restart
I did that and after that I couldn't log in it just says failed to connect. I restarted the computer.
I also tried re-installing the software but nothing worked.
  • @Steve other services like AIM through Pidgin work fine with an HTTP proxy (aim service on port 443)
  • Danielle
I LOVE Digsby! Love it, I say!

Do you have any plans to support the Sametime protocol? I was using Pidgin since they are the only one that I know of that supports Sametime and it's the protocol my company insists on using. If so, I'll be able to replace all of these assorted clients with Digsby. That would make my day!

Thanks for the hard work and an outstanding product.

    Danielle
  • @ben - I just emailed you about the bug.
  • @Justin - you can deselect the "New conversations automatically take focus" option and that will start them minimized. We will add the tray enhancement at some point as well.

@Cat - disabled multiuser chat for launch because it was buggy but will bring it back soon. For the time being you can have others in MSN do the inviting and it will work fine. The GUI for inviting others is disabled for now though

@Millenius - forum coming soon. We wanted to handle all bug reports personally at first to get the right info to fix them as quickly as possible
  • ben
I've installed the new update, but now when I got to login in it says it's connecting but then says "loading skin" and just stays like that. Is anyone else having this happen to them?
  • @Nicholas - I'm sorry but your firewall is blocking digsby from getting to the internet. In the near future we will mask our traffic as HTTP over port 80 but it sounds like you will have trouble connecting to all the IM services. Email me if you have suggestions.

@Eric - thank you for the diagnostic report. We will look at it and resolve the issue shortly.
  • Millenius
Do you will create a forum on digsby.com ?
It's very efficient to share and discuss about this amazing software :p
  • Ben
Thanks for changing the AIM conversation windows! That's what I call instant feedback.

One more thing I thought of - I am not always getting the "_____ has logged off" message in my conversation windows, particularly with Google talk buddies. Lots of times I am chatting with someone, then go do something else for a bit, come back and just continue chatting with them...but they are offline in my buddy list, and there was no notification within the window. I do not lose internet connection during these situations, as far as I know.

    Thanks again
  • Justin
Hi, it would be really nice if you added an option where new IMS wouldn’t pop up on the screen, but rather as a blinking icon in the system tray. Some people feel instant message conversations are very private, and if someone is over your shoulder, and an IM pops up on the screen, sometimes that’s an awkward situation.
  • the-tick
MSN works YAY but cannot connect to hotmail.

Wow you guys are fast at fixing things :-)
  • cat
got digsby yesterday, and it's pretty solid! great job! one feature I would like to see is to be able to IM chat with multiple buddies at the same time. I use this feature (in MSN particularly) for meetings, etc. quite heavily
  • Eric
I'm still having issues sending and receiving over msn. I submitted a bug report. I think I have an issue where it works when I start the converstaion, but I don't get any messages when others send them (on digsby or MSN).
  • Are you guys planning on adding support for Google phone like thing, and other audio/video chat stuff.
  • @Steve correct
  • @Nicholas - are you behind a firewall that blocks 5222 and blocks non-http traffic on 80?
  • Edgar Medina
    Greetings,

I've had a chance to download the software, register, and get use it for a
bit. This is the 4th major multi-protocol IM client that I've used, and I
have to say, so far from what I've seen it is extremely impressive. Even
with this first public beta it is very stable, user friendly, and has a ton
    of really great features.

I've not seen any issues or errors so far. I am using the following
protocols: AIM, Hotmail, Google Talk, and Yahoo! Messenger. I am also
using the MySpace features as well.

I'm still getting used to the feature set, but does Digsby allow for plugins?
I see a widget framework, and I'm not sure if it'd be the same thing, but
I'd be curious to see if the user community would get to write plugins
themselves using an API or plugin framework. In particular my friends and
I working in our corporate office use the IBM Lotus Notes Sametime protocol
internally, and at some point if someone in the community would port or
whip up a plugin we'd be in heaven.

I noticed just a few quick things for suggestions in future builds:

    - Sounds enabled by default
    - Typing notification in the body of the message window frame versus just the
    title bar
    - Option to auto accept file transfers selectively (i.e. from all users, or
    just users in buddy list)

Thanks for such a great piece of software,

    Edgar
  • Michael
I was wondering if the Jabber connection portion is supposed to be able to work with a Wildfire Jabber server. I haven't been able to get it to work and when the connection fails it doesn't give me any sort of debug info. I have no idea why it fails.

    Thanks!
  • @Steve Can't get to help, it says Failed to Connect
  • Kirin
I love this app, so far the only issue I have is that I can not see my typed text that is sent when chatting with people on Yahoo. ONce they get that fixed I will be thrilled and recommend this to all my buddies.
  • @Nicholas - click "Help" > "About Digsby". If you have build 12180 then you are all set.

@Lixoman100 - emailing you now to resolve this
  • Download page doesn't seem to be updated to point at the new version... and I am not receiving the update via Auto Update.
  • Jornsby
I downloaded the product at home last night and got it to work. It seems pretty awesome.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Digsby here at work so this latest update would take affect. Unfortunately I am still getting the "Connection Lost" message.

Argghh, I was tempted by Digsby last night and I want to get it working here!

Keep up the good work and updates guys.
  • lixoman100
I downloaded the new version, uninstalled the previous and installed the new version. I started the program and it worked.

Then I closed the program and restarted it, it said it was downloading updated and hanged at around 512kb. I closed it and started it again, now the "Digsby needs to restart..." bug is back again.
  • Would like to say first and foremost that so far I love this app. Like, will digsby be my valentine and such?

Secondly... I'd love to see a "twitter" plug in. :) and/or typepad widget of some sort.
