Help Us Fix Crashes!

We still get crash reports from a small portion of users.  These are issues we aren’t able to reproduce here so we need your help to hunt down the buggers causing the crashes so we can squash them!

  • Does Digsby crash for you at least once a week?
  • Do you have Visual Studio installed?

If the answer to both questions is a yes, then you can help!

We created a debug version of Digsby that does a lot more diagnostic stuff under the hood.   If you can get it to crash, the diagnostic log it generates will be extremely helpful in figuring out the cause.  If you would like to help, here are the instructions:

  1. IMPORTANT: If you don’t have Visual Studio, the debug build won’t run.
  2. Download this file and put it in the Digsby folder. If you already have a “tag.yaml” file, edit it to change the tag from “alpha” to “debug”
  3. Restart Digsby so it can auto-update.
  4. Log in and click Help > About to make sure you now have build r24922 r24945 r24959 r24978.
  5. Next time Digsby crashes, if you get a dialog asking you to submit a crash report, submit one.
  6. Instead of telling Windows to close the program, choose to debug it in Visual Studio (prior experience would help)
  7. In the menu choose Debug > Save Dump As… and make a minidump of the current state of Digsby
  8. Email that minidump to bugs@digsby.com

Thanks for your help!

Update 1 (11/5/2009 5:45pm EST): We pushed out a patch fixing a crash related to viewing chat history in the log viewer. New release number is r24945.

Update 2 (11/6/2009 6:45pm EST): Another day, another crash fixed. New release number is 24959.

Update 3 (11/10/2009 5:10pm EST): Keep those reports coming and we will be crash-free in no time!  New release with one more crash fix is 24978.

Digsby will crash every time on the Vista Home Premium Desktop system, but not on the Vista Home Premium Laptop. It occasionally mentions Data Execution Prevention as being involved, but never when I'm prepared to write or copy the error.
  • John K
I haven't noticed Digsby crashing on my computer in a good while now. It actually just dawned on my yesterday when I thought about how good digsby was working for me! I haven't changed much on my computer either.

Good Work! I love the product!
  • Dale Jacobs
Each time you post a new blog update and no mention of mac beta after over a year makes me cry inside.
  • Shaun Thomas Frisbee
Win 7, VS 2008... I don't remember it ever crashing, but installed the debug anyway. Just in case.
  • Dave
Scratch that, a combination of a different version of the installer and installing to a different folder helped me to get it re-installed.
  • Dave
Now I can't install, even after uninstall and reboot all I get is this: http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/4193/digsby.jpg :(
  • Dave
24945 was working for me (Vista 64-bit SP2, VS 2005 installed), but I restarted to update to 24959 and now it won't load at all. Re-installed and updated again, same thing. I guess I'll have to withdraw from this testing until the next release.
  • muffi
I can't seem to download anything from that link ??

    it opens a page saying...

    ---
    tag: debug
  • Maziyar
I havnt had any problem with digsby. It is working Fine.
  • I have visual studio and I am using Digsby for the past few months. But not once it has crashed.
  • Charlie
Like Luther mine doesn't crash, but Outlook and FF lock up and as soon as I kill digsby everything goes back to normal.
  • Gonzalo
This version is Giving me headaches. It keeps closing itself.
  • Bewitched
So when i go to click the download this file ... doesnt work.. maybe ya should check that out.. there is nothing to download.. pretty pointless and there are a lot of script errors on the main site as well.
  • Mike
Add me to the list of people who tried this, and now Digsby doesn't start at all. I have VS2005 & VS2008 installed. Reinstalling Digsby.
  • Zak
Personally, Digsby has been stable as a rock for me since I started using it at build 33. I've never even had it spike in CPU usage.
  • For the past few weeks Digsby has been crashing 1x a day and it seems like with every update it is getting more of a resource hog vs. less.

I do not have the other program you stated but thought you may still want my input.

I love Digsby but after the past few weeks I have decided I might have to shop for an alternative because it is getting worse rather than better : ( with the crashes.

    Any suggestions?

I do not have visual studio installed but digsby crashes on me almost every day :-( It started doing this about 3 builds or so ago. I'm still holding out but at some point I may have to give up.
  • David Pesta
Digsby used to be good. But feature creep is making it bloated. That is the problem with crashing as it never happened before. Now it crashes every day.

Revert to an earlier working version to make a separate Digsby Lite product. Then you can make your main Digsby program as bloated and feature creepy as you want it to be. And the people who just want a basic IM system can be happy.
  • Digsby
@All: The return from hibernate crash is fixed! For those of you having trouble getting the debug build going, don't worry about it. Just remove the file and reinstall the regular release. Those of you who have it running, thank you for the help! Keep those crash logs coming.
  • Jeffrey
I changed the tag param from alpha to debug and digsby wont start nemore...just runs the update and aborts

I do have VS 2008 installed on Win XP SP3
  • This looks like a new bug , i have visual studios installed .. digsby never ever crashed for me ... nor does it freeze .
  • OK, I have VS2005 installed as I am a developer. I've downloaded and put the yaml file in the Digsby folder. When I restart the application, does it pull down the debug version from the site or is there a binary I install as well? The instructions at the top of this only indicate the download and install of the yaml file. After I restart Digsby, it says it is Build 24920, implying it is retail.

I've run Digsby for probably 5-6 months with NO ISSUES on XPSP3 and McAfee Corporate antivirus suites. Digsby == Great product!.
  • Fred
i have Windows XP Pro SP2, VSTS 2008, and digsby. I added the tag.yaml set as debug to add the ability to notify when digsby crashes or does something unexpected. Digsby updated, tried to launch and failed to launch. launched digsby manually, and it imediatly quits before the splash screen shows up. uninstalled and reinstalled digsby 2 times, tried the tag.yaml as debug again both times. Same result. uninstalled and reinstalled back with tag.yaml set as alpha, digsby updated and launched without incident. Any idea?
  • duckworth
I have the same issue as Luther as well. It results in 100% CPU and locks the DWM and the taskbar won't respond to clicks.
  • Jerry Lillibridge
I used to have Vista and now I have Win 7 Business but with both OS, I occasionally get "Sign out" abrubtly without any reason like maybe once or twice a day but it auto-reconnected though. It could be a bug but can't figure out what caused it.

I have HP Intel Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram using office 2007 and IE 8.0. am currently using digsby build 24920.
  • Andree
Sometimes those status comes up on but no display on digsby's window...
  • Just like flfny said, "Digsby crashes for me on a daily basis. I am also running Win 7 RTM, and it seems everytime my computer goes to sleep, when I come back and wake it, Digsby reports it has crashed."

64-bit version of Win 7 Ultimate RTM.
  • Oh, and I neglected to mention--this is on Windows XP Professional, SP3.
  • I'm running VS2005, VS2008, several plug-ins, and I use Digsby from 8AM-5PM Mon-Fri. I have never experienced a crash. I hope you guys can squash the bugs others are having.

    Keep up the good work!
  • Konrad
I have Visual Studio 2005 pro and 2008 Database Dev Edition and the debug build of Digsby will not start.
  • VS2008 and VS2010 Beta 2 installed in W7 x64 Ultimate. Very few crashes of late, but glad to help when I can.
  • Kerem Kusmezer
Everything ok for me also, i have VS2008 ve Windows 2003 Server , so no problems at whole.
  • My Digsby doesn't crash exactly, rather it periodically cuts out from the individual services, MSN being the most troublesome, disconnects and reconnects... ahsn't happened as much in the last few days but we shall see.

Installed the file, downloaded updates but my build says 24920 Any ideas why I'm getting a previous build?
  • Magdi Raid
I work with digsby for more than one year and there is no problem till now.
  • M. Asad Malik
I don’t have any problems on my Digsby.

I have Windows XP Professional, i use Digsby to Contact my Yahoo!,Gmail,Msn,Facebook,Myspace,Twitter…

    I have a PC with {Intel(R) Pentium 4 CPU 4.60 1.60GHz 1.59GHz, 384 MB of RAM

  • Salin Sarin
    Hi All,

kindly advise how to make a call from digsby. ( as we used to make from yahoo in hte messenger box )
  • why when to hot mail through digsby, Windows signs me out and says I have been signed on through a different location. did i do somthing wrong? This is getting to be frustrating!
  • var_dump
i have vs 2008, but no probs with digsby
    everything is OK

    and btw, digsby ROCKS! :D
  • ok digsby could in prove a bit more if you added more social site to deal with like fan box and others like tagged and hi5 and so forth with all sorts of social net works not just the main ones you all ready have try finding this ones i already mention but its just a suggestion

but on a side note its awesome that i can operate with digsby
  • I'll run the debug version if Digsby starts crashing on me, but it's been just fine thusfar.
  • Joey
VS 2k8 & Disgy on Windows XP & Windows 7 with no crashes at all.
  • achain
I have Digsby crash often and I have VisualStdio so I would join the hunting.
But Digsby stay at build 24920 even with tag.yaml (debug one) in the same place of digsby.exe. The updater always check updates about 20 sec, then nothing happen.
    Any hints?
  • Dave
Thanks for this. I'm probably one of the small portion of users you speak of, having submitted logs after Digsby has frozen multiple times per day (although it's only when I am using Twitter - since removing my account it's been stable).

As I have Visual Studio I have upgraded and will add my Twitter account again in the hope that I can help you to find out what's going on.
  • Well, I don't have Visual Studio installed on my computer that I use Digsby, but I have had crashes, so here's my general info:

    - Digsby running...
    - Outlook (2007) running
    - Internet Explorer running
--- And then sometimes when I'm typing, Digsby locks up for an entire minute. It takes a while for it to restore function, so that I can type again.

But I will never stop using Digsby, since it's too great!! Keep it all up, I actually really love the little pop up messages you send us, it's pretty cool :D

    Good work, again!
  • flfny
It crashes for me on a daily basis. I am running Win 7 RTM and it seems everytime my computer goes to sleep, when I come back and wake it, Digsby reports it has crashed.
  • Hi, I have installed the debug version and will submit my debug reports when Digsby crashes.

Digsby crashes for me at least twice a day, locking up pretty much any processes that tie into anything Microsoft related. What's funny, is that I only experience this issue on computers that I use when Visual Studio is installed.

    I'm also running Win7 Professional 64-Bit.
  • Stratos
I have VB Intstalled but i didnt have problems with digsby!
  • Brian King
I have Digsby installed, but I haven't had it hard lock once! No lie. Is there anything else I can do to help? I do have Visual Studio.
  • Phillip
Which one? I have VS.NET 2003 and VS 8 installed.
  • Theo
No crashes, but I restart Digsby from time to time due to MEM/VMEM consumption.
  • WaywardCat
My mistake - I have Visual Express C++. I thought I had Visual Studio 2010 installed, but I guess not.
  • Nate
Digsby works perfectly fine I ran the debug on it and didn't find any leaks or problems. Im using win 7 and its good so far, so theirs no need to adapt digsby to win 7 which is pretty nice.
  • Digsby
@All: The debug build won't work unless you have Visual Studio. If it doesn't work on your machine just remove the tag.yaml file and reinstall Digsby for everything to go back to normal. None of your preferences will be lost.
  • I'll have to reinstall MS Visual Studio this weekend on my computer because Digsby does crash quite often on my computer running Windows 7.

I'll help out as much as possible so these issues get solved.
  • I have Digsby installed on 4 computers on the following platforms; Xp Home, Xp Pro, Vista basic, Windows 7 Ultimate. I have never had any issues with Digsby and all computers run CS4(usually Photoshop and Illustrator together), FireFox 3.5 with 10+ tabs open at a time, Outlook, Norton Anti-virus, Eclipse, Tomcat, Run Run Jetty and a 25GB MYSQL Database. Granted all these computers have 4GB of DDR2 RAM and Intel Core2 2.1GHz or higher. Do not use Visual Studio mostly because it sucks.
  • anssik
I have Visual Studio C++ 6.0 and VB 6.0. I never have experienced any crashes on digsby. I'm running XP SP3 with all the latest updates.
  • Phillip
I can't get it to run at all. It launches and immediately quits -- I had to set the update speed to "High" in Task Manager to even see it.
  • Geoff
I'm having the same problem as Ricardo. Having followed these instructions, Digsby updated itself and will now not start. Removing the tag.yaml file didn't help, so I'm gonna try a re-install. Wish me luck.
  • Brian
I have VS2008 installed and Digsby gives me a warning that comes when idle for a while and goes away when the mouse is moved. I got the debug build but it won't run. I think I am gonna have to uninstall Digsby and reinstall it.
  • Anthony
Have been encountering crashes as well. WinXP system and Visual Studio 2005 is installed. I copied the tag.yaml file and Digsby updated to build 24922, but now will not start.
  • Never crashed on me till I installed it. I think I'm using this for more than 1 year now.

    Thank you people!
  • WaywardCat
The issue I had been having with Digsby is that it would lock up. Just Digsby. I could use firefox, but Digsby would stop working for 5 minutes or so at a time. This is slightly my computer's fault for being slow, but it's clearly not all my computer's fault, nor the Internet connection, because other programs continued working.

Anyway, I figured I'd do this to help out. Now Digsby won't start at all. I tried resetting my computer, but nothing. It just won't start.
  • mikey
I am still having problems with signing into the Facebook application. Upon entering my email and password and pressing enter, the pop-up screen goes all white and does nothing from there on.
  • Jerry
I rebooted my machine and it worked.
  • digsby is like the coolest software i have ever used.. no probs so far
  • alminol
Am I silly or some people here didn't actually understand what this is all about?

As I understood, this article is not about the issue VS2008 or VS2005 causing crashes in digsby...
The thing is you need VS2008 or VS2005 to create dump data when running debug version of digsby... so here, VS is just a tool to determine a cause of the crash in digsby by creating a report... it doesn't invoke crashes...

    peace...
  • i run vs2003, vs2005, and vs2008 with no probs
  • lazar vasile
    nu inteleg decit romineste
  • Jerry
Do i have to restart my entire system after placing the file in the folder. Since i did that i'm not able to restart digsby. I click on the exe and nothing happens. There is nothing running in the task manager.
  • I switched from alpha to debug. Doesn't load now.
  • Well, how can I put this? Until recently the SMS feature was working like a charm. Now, I get a error when I reply to a SMS! Could this be a bug? I can't remember what the erros / Prompt is at the time but I will post it when someone sends me a SMS. Please resolve this minor issue. Meanwhile, I love Digsby, I promot Digsby with the Widget on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn. Also, I have the Widget on one of my other Websites [http://fmlyrnn.tripod.com/id15.html] so that people can obtain this wonderful application.
  • Nitz
Just curious, if we keep our tag.yaml at 'debug', are we still getting releases as often as alpha, or is this a less frequently updated branch?
  • DD
I have Digsby Im running windows Vista home And i have NO problems with it ever its a Great Program.

Ty From a very satified Customer
  • @Luther: try experimenting with you virus scanner settings (if you have one). usually the 100% cpu is because the virus scanner is analyzing every bit of data coming through your programs.
  • NA
The issue I usually get when working with VS2005 and Digsby is that, when debugging and stopped a breakpoint, Digsby's UI is locked up until I let the debugger continue -- doesn't happen in any other application aside from Digsby.
  • Joshua
It crashes at least one time a week for me. I am in a programming class at school so I am using VB, so that would make sense if that was making it crash
  • cindy perez
my messenger won't connect to gmail it start the process then stop the it do it again and again.please fix
  • Gonzalo
I'll send the crash As soon as I have it.
  • reedinthewind
I downloaded the file, and it broke three copies of Digsby. Every time I let it update after putting the file in, Digsby wouldn't launch. I'm one of those few users for whom Digsby still crashes on a semi-regular basis, so I'd like to do my part to help fix the problem.
  • Diego Torres
Will thid apply for portable version???
  • Hi,

I have installed Visual Studio 2010 Beta but Digsby runs as smooth as usual. No Crash since weeks.
  • D
The problam is rather in a common microsoft shared dll..
I had a similar problem using FoxPro Support Library for Data bases..

Open Internet options, from internet explorer.
    Click Advanced - Reset.

try again, if the problem persists try this..

1- put your Windows xp/Vista CD in the drive..

2- open the run window (Winkey+R) and type the following command

    sfc /scannow

3- restart the computer (After the proceedure is complete)
(Remember to remove the Windows® CD
  • John Meyer
I live in Studio & always have Digsby running the latest alpha, and I've never seen Digsby crash... WinXP in the office, Win7 at home, both running the Win7 theme
  • You know that you can save the crashdump when digsby crashes automatically and then upload it next time it starts.

    http://www.debuginfo.com/articles/effminidumps.html
  • Yuriy Padlyak
I have the same issue, Luther Miller has.
  • Avery
I am afraid it updated to build 24920, not 22. Feel free to email me further instructions.
  • ylvall
If you have Visual Studio installed, when you see a problem like the one described by Luther Miller, you can go in Task Manager, right click the process and select "Create dump file".
The dump will reveal the call stack that causes the CPU to go 100%.
A crash handler in Digsby would be nice. :)
  • rainer
i have the same problem as luther
  • Sam
The problem isn't with Digsby, but with the platform we are running it on.
  • Lance
    NO
  • Selvan
I have visual studio and I am using Digsby for the past few months. But not once it has crashed.
  • Ricardo
it is not launching... the process starts and then quits
  • ADMIRAL12
I don't have any problems on my Digsby.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate, i use Digsby to Contact my Yahoo!,Gmail,Msn,Facebook,Myspace,Twitter...

    I have a PC with {Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz(2 CPU)..
    RAM > 1918MB

I hope that my information useful..
  • Ricardo
    Now, it never starts...
  • Jon Wu
+1 what Luther said. Sometimes everything just locks up and normally once I kill Digsby and Firefox it's all better - but Firefox doesn't freeze on its own. Sometimes Outlook is in the loop too but Luther has nailed it down pretty well.
  • Drew S.
I run VS 2005 and 2008 on WinXP Pro SP3 and no crashes related to digsby. if it does, i will install the debug version and let you know.

    good luck bug hunting
  • Let's try it.
  • Don Webster
Running Windows 7 Ultimate, and have Visual Studio 2008 installed with a ton of add-ins. No crashes, no freezes, it just works.

I also have a Win7 VM setup with the VS 2010 beta 2 running and have Digsby installed there, no issues.
  • Luther Miller
It doesn't crash for me, but I have to kill it manually. Digsby is one of about 3-4 programs (Firefox and Outlook also are) that seem to mysteriously cause my computer to grind to a halt with 100% CPU usage by multiple processes combined. Once I kill Digsby, Outlook, and Firefox, the problem goes away after a few minutes. I think its some kind of driver/DPC issue, but only these programs cause it to happen. In Digsby, I turned off the feature to use my computer for research, so that's not it.
